    • It is believed that Alzheimer's disease (AD) amyloid-β-peptide (Aβ) deposits contribute directly to the disease's progressive neurodegeneration. Aggregation cascade for Aβ peptides, its relevance to neurotoxicity in the course of AD, various factors modulating Aβ aggregation kinetics and experimental methods useful for these studies were recently discussed [1]. Al(III), Zn(II), Cu(II) and Fe(III) ions are often colocalized at the center of the core of Alzheimer's amyloid plaques [2] and are suggested to promote aggregation of physiological concentrations of Aβ [3]. It has also been suggested that Al can block calcium permeable putative Aβ-peptide channels in bilayer membranes [4]. Therefore studies of complexation of metal ions with Aβ-oligomers and fibrils are important in the search for the causes of and potential treatments for AD.We studied effects of highly soluble and biologically relevant aluminium(III)-citrate compounds, [Al3(H-1Cit)3(OH)]-4 and [Al3(H-1Cit)3(OH)4]-7, on the fibrillogenesis of Aβ(1-40). All resonances in 156.37 MHz 27Al and 90.52 MHz 13C MAS NMR spectra of powder Al(III)-citrate complexes were assigned. 27Al MAS NMR of dialysed samples of Aβ(1-40) co-incubated with the Al(III)-citrate complexes at different concentrations in TRIS buffer solutions, pH 7.4, shows that Al(III)-citrates bind to Aβ(1-40) as [Al3(H-1Cit)3(OH)]-4 and either accelerate ([Al3(H-1Cit)3(OH)]-4 complex) or retard ([Al3(H-1Cit)3(OH)4]-7 compound) aggregation of Aβ(1-40) as revealed by AFM. • 1ST OBSERVATION OF EXCITED-STATES IN SB-108
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - 0375-9474 .- 1873-1554. ; 581:1, s. 189-204
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A spectroscopic study of Sb-108 has been carried out as a part of a larger experiment where in total twenty-nine different residual nuclei were identified. This study gives the first information on excited levels in this nucleus. A low-lying two-quasi-particle multiplet together with some of the higher lying levels are discussed within the framework of the nuclear shell model. A rotational, strongly coupled, band is identified as, most likely, being built on the deformed pig9/2(-1) nuh11/2 configuration in accordance with total routhian surface calculations. Tentative spins and parities are presented as well as B(M1)/B(E2) ratios for some of the transitions in the strongly coupled band.

  • Ingår i: Zeitschrift für Physik A Hadrons and Nuclei. - 0939-7922 .- 1431-5831. ; 350:1, s. 3-4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excited states of Te-108 were populated in the Fe-54 + Ni-58 (270 MeV) reaction using the NORDBALL detector array equipped with charged-particle and neutron detector systems for reaction channel separation. Gamma rays belonging to the neutron deficient nucleus Te-108 were identified for the first time. On the basis of gammagamma-coincidence and angular correlation relations a level scheme was constructed with tentative spin and parity assignments. The structure of the nucleus is discussed in the framework of systematics of heavier Te nuclei.

  • IN-BEAM SPECTROSCOPY OF TE-110
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - 0375-9474 .- 1873-1554. ; 577:3-4, s. 773-785
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The neutron-deficient nucleus Te-110 has been investigated by in-beam spectroscopic methods using the NORDBALL multi-detector array. Except for the energy of one level observed in alpha-decay, excited states in Te-110 were previously unknown. The level scheme constructed from gamma gamma-coincidence relationships is presented with tentative spin assignments up to I-pi = 21(-). Above spin 8(+) the yrast states have negative parity. They are most likely the members of a band predominantly based on the nu(h(11/2)g(7/2)) two-quasiparticle configuration. A band crossing is observed at I-pi approximate to 17(-). It is suggested to be caused by the alignment of two h(11/2) neutrons. The cranked shell model correctly predicts the spin alignment, but fails to reproduce the observed band crossing frequency, possibly because of octupole effects.

  • HIGH-SPIN STUDIES NEAR SN-100 WITH NORDBALL - NEW RESULTS ON IN-102, IN-104 AND SB-108
  • 1993
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The NORDBALL detector array has been used in a gamma-ray spectroscopic study of neutron deficient nuclei close to 100Sn. A beam of 270 MeV 58Ni ions was used to bombard a target of Fe-54. Reaction channel separation was achieved with a 4pi charged particle Si-ball together with a 1pi neutron detector wall. Altogether 29 final nuclei were identified and excited states were observed for the first time in 8 of them. The weakest identified channel was 100Cd which represented 4.10(-3) % of the observed total yield. Level schemes Of 102In, 104In and 108Sb constructed from gamma-gamma-particle-coincidence and gamma-gamma-angular correlation analyses are presented. The observed structures are discussed in the framework of the nuclear shell-model. In 108Sb also a deformed, strongly coupled, level sequence is observed. This deformed structure is interpreted as built on a pig9/2(-1)xnuh11/2 configuration in agreement with TRS calculations.

  • HIGH-SPIN BAND STRUCTURES IN CD-104
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Zeitschrift für Physik A Hadrons and Nuclei. - 0939-7922 .- 1431-5831. ; 352:2, s. 117-118
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High spin states in Cd-104 have been investigated by means of heavy ion induced reactions using the Nordball detector array. The level scheme constructed from yy-coincidences is dominated by three band structures, The positive parity band shows no rotational like energy spacing, It is thus understood mostly in terms of quasiparticle excitations with vd(5/2), Vg(7/2) and pi g(9/2) configurations, The collective properties of the negative parity bands are more pronounced. These bands are most likely due to v(h(11/2),d(5/2)) and v(h(11/2)g(7/2)) structures.

  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - 0375-9474 .- 1873-1554. ; 627:2, s. 239-258
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states of the isotopes 103,105,107,109In have been investigated using in-beam γ-ray spectroscopic methods. Results from three different experiments are presented. Targets of 54Fe, 50Cr, and 92Mo were bombarded by a 270 and 261 MeV 58Ni beam and by a 95 MeV 19F beam, respectively. Reaction channel separation was achieved with a charged-particle detector array and in the first two experiments also with a 1π neutron detector system. As a result of these experiments the level schemes of 103,105,107,109In were significantly extended. Excited states of these odd-A indium isotopes are discussed within the framework of the nuclear shell model and the hole-core coupling scheme. The systematics of excited states of light odd-A indium isotopes is also discussed.

  • The isospin dependent p-n multiplets in the region of doubly magic Sn-100
  • 1996
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Experimental data on p-n multiplets appearing in the nuclei near double-magic Sn-100 accesible in heavy-ion fusion-evaporation experiments have been analyzed. Proton-rich nuclei in this region have been investigated using the NORDBALL array. A Ni-58 beams at energies of 270 Mev on Fe-54 and 261 MeV on Cr-50 targets were used. Reaction channel separation was achieved with a 4 pi charged particle multi-detector set-up together with a 1 pi neutron detector wall placed in the forward direction. On the basis of gamma gamma-coincidence and angular correlation relations a level schemes of several light Sn, In, Sb, Te and I nuclei were observed for the first time in the present experiment. The observed structure of nuclei are discussed in the framework of the nuclear shell-model. The p-n multiplets in the A similar to 100 region corresponding to the nucleon pairs with mixed configurations has been considered as a playground for the tests of the T = 0 and T = 1 parts of the effective interaction.

    • Neutron deficient nuclei close to Sn-100 have been investigated in-beam using the NORDBALL detector array. A target of Fe-54 was bombarded with a beam of Ni-58 at 270 MeV. Evaporation residues were identified by detecting protons and alpha particles in a 4 pi charged particle multi-detector set-up and neutrons in a 1 pi neutron detector wall in coincidence with gamma rays. Excited states of the proton drip line nucleus Sb-106 and of Sb-107 were identified for the first time. The yrast level schemes constructed from gamma-gamma-particle coincidence and gamma-gamma angular correlation analysis are presented and discussed within the framework of the nuclear shell model.

  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Physica scripta. T. - 0281-1847. ; T56, s. 245-248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pb-195 was investigated utilizing the reactions Dy-164(S-36, 5n)Pb-195 and Dy-164(S-34, 3n)Pb-195 at beam energies of 170 and 160MeV respectively. Two new dipole bands which feed into the yrast 25/2(+) state, were found in Pb-195. The connection between the bands and the spherical states was established and thus spins and energies of the involved collective states were determined. The deformation is understood as mainly due to excitations of protons across the Z = 82 shell gap. The observed backbends are interpreted as alignment of i(13/2) neutrons.

  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 79:13, s. 2415-2418
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excited states in Cd-98, two proton holes from Sn-100, were identified and studied for the first time, using in-beam spectroscopy with highly selective ancillary detectors. The structure of the (pi g(9/2))(-2) two-proton-hole spectrum below a T-1/2 = 0.48(16) mu s isomer is deduced and compared to shell-model predictions. A tentative I-pi = (8(+)) assignment, as suggested by systematics, yields a strongly reduced B(E2,8(+) --> 6(+)) = 0.44((+20)(-10)) W.u., corresponding to an effective proton charge of e(pi) = 0.85((+20)(-10))e, which is at variance with existing theoretical predictions.

Two γ-ray transitions with energies 1472 and 497 keV following the decay of the seniority 6+ isomer with t1/2 = 1.0(5) μs were unambiguously assigned to 102Sn. Due to the very low cross section of about 2 μb for producing 102Sn in the reaction 50Cr(58Ni,1α2n), a highly selective detector setup utilizing NORDBALL ancillary detectors and a recoil catcher device was used. High γ-ray detection efficiency was achieved with two EUROBALL Ge cluster detectors.

    • A growing community is constructing a next-generation file format (NGFF) for bioimaging to overcome problems of scalability and heterogeneity. Organized by the Open Microscopy Environment (OME), individuals and institutes across diverse modalities facing these problems have designed a format specification process (OME-NGFF) to address these needs. This paper brings together a wide range of those community members to describe the cloud-optimized format itself-OME-Zarr-along with tools and data resources available today to increase FAIR access and remove barriers in the scientific process. The current momentum offers an opportunity to unify a key component of the bioimaging domain-the file format that underlies so many personal, institutional, and global data management and analysis tasks.

  • Characterization of micro pore optics for full-field X-ray fluorescence imaging
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 18:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Elemental mapping images can be achieved through step scanning imaging using pinhole optics or micro pore optics (MPO), or alternatively by full-field X-ray fluorescence imaging (FF-XRF). X-ray optics for FF-XRF can be manufactured with different micro-channel geometries such as square, hexagonal or circular channels. Each optic geometry creates different imaging artefacts. Square-channel MPOs generate a high intensity central spot due to two reflections via orthogonal channel walls inside a single channel, which is the desirable part for image formation, and two perpendicular lines forming a cross due to reflections in one plane only. Thus, we have studied the performance of a square-channel MPO in an FF-XRF imaging system. The setup consists of a commercially available MPO provided by Photonis and a Timepix3 readout chip with a silicon detector. Imaging of fluorescence from small metal particles has been used to obtain the point spread function (PSF) characteristics. The transmission through MPO channels and variation of the critical reflection angle are characterized by measurements of fluorescence from copper and titanium metal fragments. Since the critical angle of reflection is energy dependent, the cross-arm artefacts will affect the resolution differently for different fluorescence energies. It is possible to identify metal fragments due to the form of the PSF function. The PSF function can be further characterized using a Fourier transform to suppress diffuse background signals in the image.

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press. - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 420:2, s. 1636-1639
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Parity forbidden radiative transitions from metastable levels are observed in spectra of low-density astrophysical plasmas. These lines are used as probes of the physical conditions, made possible due to the long lifetime of their upper level. In a joint effort, the FERRUM project aims to obtain new and accurate atomic data for the iron-group elements, and part of this project concerns forbidden lines. The radiative lifetimes of the metastable energy levels 3 d4(a 3 D)4 s   c4 D 5/2 and 3 d4(a 3 D)4 s   c4 D 7/2 of singly ionized chromium have been measured. The experiment has been performed at the ion storage ring CRYRING. We employed a laser-probing technique developed for measuring long lifetimes. In this article, we present the lifetimes of these levels to be τ5/2= 1.28(16) s and τ7/2= 1.37(7) s, respectively. A comparison with previous theoretical work shows good agreement and the result is discussed in a theoretical context.

  • Depth of interaction and bias voltage dependence of the spectral response in a pixellated CdTe detector operating in time-over-threshold mode subjected to monochromatic X-rays
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 7:3, s. Art. no. C03002-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High stopping power is one of the most important figures of merit for X-ray detectors. CdTe is a promising material but suffers from: material defects, non-ideal charge transport and long range X-ray fluorescence. Those factors reduce the image quality and deteriorate spectral information. In this project we used a monochromatic pencil beam collimated through a 20ÎŒm pinhole to measure the detector spectral response in dependance on the depth of interaction. The sensor was a 1mm thick CdTe detector with a pixel pitch of 110ÎŒm, bump bonded to a Timepix readout chip operating in Time-Over-Threshold mode. The measurements were carried out at the Extreme Conditions beamline I15 of the Diamond Light Source. The beam was entering the sensor at an angle of ∌20 degrees to the surface and then passed through ∌25 pixels before leaving through the bottom of the sensor. The photon energy was tuned to 77keV giving a variation in the beam intensity of about three orders of magnitude along the beam path. Spectra in Time-over-Threshold (ToT) mode were recorded showing each individual interaction. The bias voltage was varied between -30V and -300V to investigate how the electric field affected the spectral information. For this setup it is worth noticing the large impact of fluorescence. At -300V the photo peak and escape peak are of similar height. For high bias voltages the spectra remains clear throughout the whole depth but for lower voltages as -50V, only the bottom part of the sensor carries spectral information. This is an effect of the low hole mobility and the longer range the electrons have to travel in a low field. © 2012 IOP Publishing Ltd and Sissa Medialab srl.

  • Probing Defects in a Small Pixellated CdTe Sensor Using an Inclined Mono Energetic X-Ray Micro Beam
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science. - 0018-9499 .- 1558-1578. ; 60:4, s. 2864-2869
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High quantum efficiency is important in X-ray imaging applications. This means using high-Z sensor materials. Unfortunately many of these materials suffer from defects that cause non-ideal charge transport. In order to increase the understanding of these defects, we have mapped the 3D response of a number of defects in two 1 mm thick CdTe sensors with different pixel sizes (55 mu m and 110 mu m) using a monoenergetic microbeam at 79 keV. The sensors were bump bonded to Timepix read out chips. Data was collected in photon counting as well as time-over-thresholdmode. The time-over-thresholdmode is a very powerful tool to investigate charge transport properties and fluorescence in pixellated detectors since the signal from the charge that each photon deposits in each pixel can be analyzed. Results show distorted electrical field around the defects, indications of excess leakage current and large differences in behavior between electron collection and hole collection mode. The experiments were carried out on the Extreme Conditions Beamline I15 at Diamond Light Source.
