  • Ingår i: Space and Culture. - : SAGE Publications. - 1206-3312 .- 1552-8308. ; 17:2, s. 122-136
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There are a number of mundane technologies which shape pedestrian mobility such as pavements, corridors and stairs. In this paper we focus on the practical implications revolving doors as atechnology have for the social organisation of people walking together. Drawing upon videorecordings we analyse the observable intersubjective resources produced and used by membersof the setting when walking through doors, and the interaction between formations of peopleas they do this. Revolving doors are turn-taking technologies that challenge mobile formationsbecause the formations need to disassemble in order to pass through the doors, and thenre-assemble again on the other side. Using an ethnomethodologically guided approach we shedlight on some of the accomplishment of walking together in mobile formations.

  • Bicycles, cyclists and loads: a comparative analysis of cycling practices in Gothenburg and Toulouse
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Applied Mobilities. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2380-0127 .- 2380-0135. ; 4:1, s. 1-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article reports on a video-based analysis of bicycling practices in Gothenburg and Toulouse. It is based on actor-network theory, an approach that studies human and non-human entities and their contributions to social action equally. The paper examines bicycles and their interactions with cyclists and loads in the transport of people and goods. Accordingly, this paper presents methodological, theoretical and empirical contributions to the study of bicycle transportation as a possible method for developing sustainable urban environments. This paper also presents an innovative way to study ordinary social practices and describes how these practices shape associated societal issues.

  • Funny bikes: A symmetrical study of urban space, vehicular units and mobility through thevoyeuristic spokesperson of a video-lens
  • 2016
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a video analysis of a biker’s practices in Gothenburg and Toulouse. Itshows how bike-rental stations, bikers, bikes and loads interact, in order to seize theforgotten determinants of sustainable urban logistics. Video recording pays as muchattention to the properties of bikes as to the characteristics of people; it takes into accountthe pragmatic and situated dimension and thus allows a generalized symmetry. From there,we submit the collected material to a double treatment. First, quantitative analysis ofobserved bikes - both “sociographic” and “demographic. Second, through a qualitativeethnomethodological analysis of bike rental sequences we see how processes and systemchannel, standardize and reconfigure behavior. To understand the challenges of our method, we present it in analogy with a famous filmequivalent, Michael Haneke's film(s) Funny games. Despite objectives and content are atodds to one another, the Funny games film(s) and our own videos share at least fiveinteresting features. Empirically the our study focus on the possible reconciliation between sustainability objectives and logistical constraints.

  • (Un)equal footing : Otherings and orderings of urban mobility
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Transport History. - : SAGE Publications. - 0022-5266 .- 1759-3999. ; 44:2, s. 165-182
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This special issue brings together articles on the history of walking in European cities and urban hinterlands since the late nineteenth century. Taken together, they reveal how the conditions to walk changed as cities and streets were rethought and rebuilt for motorised mobility, and they highlight the role of labelling and defining pedestrians in order to legitimise change. The anticipation and making of car cities entailed locally specific yet similar versions of marginalisation of walking. Discursive othering (vocabularies, rules, etc.) and material ordering (through designs, etc.) of pedestrians combined to make walking the "second" mobility and produced street modernities. Using the articles as interpretative inspiration, we claim that in the twentieth century, what we refer to as mechanical equality grew in importance at the expense of embodied equality. We propose that un-marginalising walking requires the revaluation of - and hence a more thorough understanding of - the bodily qualities and mundane practices of walking.

  • From basket to shopping bag: retailers' role in the transformation of consumer mobility in Sweden, 1941-1970
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Historical Research in Marketing. - 1755-750X .- 1755-7518. ; 7:4, s. 452-475
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to follow the gradual transformation of consumer mobility in mid-20th-century Sweden in connection with the introduction of self-service retailing. The paper is based on an analysis of the magazine ICA-Tidningen, published by the major Swedish retailer ICA, for the period from 1941 to 1970. The paper describes the transformation of consumer mobility as a set of interrelated changes that involved both retailers and consumers; the interrelationship between modes of transport and container technologies; and how self-service not only transformed the interior of retail stores but also had more far-reaching implications. When attempting to understand the reconfiguration of shopping practices in the 20th century, there is a tendency to focus on large infrastructural changes. These studies tend to overlook gradual, mundane, everyday translations. This paper contributes methodological tools and analyses that account for such mundane transformations.

  • Public road signs as intermediate interaction
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Space and Culture. - : SAGE Publications. - 1206-3312 .- 1552-8308. ; 11:4, s. 383-408
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article reports a study of the abundant practice among people who live along roads to communicate with passing drivers by making and mounting public road signs. These signs can be seen as a complement, parallel, or second to official signs posted by road authorities. The article focuses specifically on how public road signs support different forms of communities, the practical work of enhancing readability for passing drivers, and the adoption to road inspectors' work of removing public road signs. The authors argue that public road signs are important, enabling intermediate interaction between communities. Furthermore, people posting signs adopt different tactics so that their messages are detected by passing drivers, while not being deleted by road authorities. However, road inspectors' work of removing signs is also vital for the success of public road signs, seeing their maintenance work as editing the road.

  • Arbetarna och tekniken : Svensk fackföreningsrörelse, rationalisering och arbetsmarknadspolitik 1920–1950
  • 2024
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation analyses the dynamics between trade unions, technological change, and labour market policies in Sweden, focusing specifically on the Metal Workers’ Union (Metall) from 1920 to 1950. By exploring archival materials, the study reveals how workers actively responded to and influenced technological changes and industrial rationalization, thereby shaping Sweden’s labour market policies.A significant portion of the dissertation examines the internal deliberations within Metall, highlighting the divergent viewpoints between the union leadership and rank-and-file members. These discussions, revolving around strategies to navigate employer-initiated rationalization efforts, reflected a spectrum of views. While the leadership often advocated for rationalization to foster class cooperation, the rank-and-file typically maintained a critical stance. The tensions over rationalization peaked during the major metalworkers’ strike of 1945, leading to agreements establishing a regulatory framework across Swedish industries. The findings underscore that workers were not passive recipients of technological change but were instrumental in negotiating the terms of rationalization, influencing the evolution of the Swedish labour market. For instance, the dissertation highlights the establishment of central institutions in the 1940s that reinforced class cooperation in matters relating to rationalization. In conclusion, this dissertation posits that the strategical response of the trade union movement to rationalization was crucial in shaping the Swedish labour market model in the 20th century.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Sosiologi Idag. - 0332-6330. ; 27:1, s. 77-94
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this article is to analyze visual roadside interaction using posted signs that are not sanctioned by the authorities. This is discussed as a form of every day communication, in relation to traffic and the localities of the signs. The article draws on photographs and interviews. The relation between users of the roadm their interpretations and sign-producers, and how this is established, defined, interpreted, and constrained by the sign, is analyzed. The article treats the flexibility and the often brief existence of the signs. Finally people's understanding of the road, due to these infromal signs, is discussed.

  • Flexibility or Inexactitude? The "Lab 60" at Karolinska Institutet : From Medical Disciplines towards the Modern Biomedical Complex
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Ambix. - 0002-6980 .- 1745-8234. ; 62:2, s. 167-188
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 1960, a new laboratory ("Lab 60") was built on the premises of Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm. This paper describes how the laboratory was envisioned. While planners and builders strove to optimise a generic laboratory, researchers argued for specialisation. The compromise was to enhance the reorganisation capability of the interior (flexibility) while simultaneously creating a "movable" institution consisting of researchers temporarily working in the laboratory for periods of three to five years, regardless of their disciplinary affiliation. Even though flexibility was not a novelty, the building succeeded as an organisational experiment and encouraged the abandonment of the model of one discipline, one professor, and one building in favour of a "movable" institution conducting temporary research. While the credibility of laboratories was established by their "placelessness" (anywhere), Lab 60 imitated multiple, heterogeneous sites (anything) in order to maintain credibility. As such, the lab embodied many sites between the disciplines of chemistry and medicine.

  • Funny bikes: a symmetrical study of urban space, vehicular units and mobility through the voyeuristic spokesperson of a video lens
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Visual Studies. - 1472-586X .- 1472-5878. ; 34:1, s. 13-27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents methodological considerations from a comparative, symmetrical video analysis of cyclist practices in Gothenburg and Toulouse. Video recording pays as much attention to the properties of bicycles as to the characteristics of people; it takes into account the pragmatic and situated dimension and, thus, allows a generalised symmetry. From there, visual methods enable us to submit the collected material to a double treatment of a quantitative analysis of observed bicycles and a qualitative ethnomethodological analysis of bike rental sequences. To better understand the logic and challenges of our method, we present it alongside an analogy with a famous film equivalent–the strategy used by the film-maker Michael Haneke in his heuristic film(s), Funny Games. Despite objectives and content that are obviously completely at odds to one another, the Funny Games film(s) and our own videos share at least five interesting features: twin films, static shots, photomontage, silent films, and rewinding.
