  • Codex and Code : Aestethcis, Language and Politics in an Age of Digital Media, NORLIT 2009, Stockholm, August 6-9, 2009
  • 2010
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The conference Codex and Code: Aesthetics, Language and Politics in an Age of Digital Media (NorLit 2009)was held at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, August 6–9, 2009. The conference was organized by the Nordic Association for Comparative Literature (NorLit); the Department of Culture and Communication, Linköping University; the School of Computer Science and Communication, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH); the Department of Comparative Literature, Stockholm University; the Department of Culture and Communication, Södertörn University College; and the Department of Comparative Literature, Uppsala University.    The aim of the conference was to develop the study of Comparative Literature through Nordic collaboration both in its own discipline and in Modern Language and Cultural studies. As the title for the conference suggests, the principal question for the conference was the challenge that the study of literature encounters in an age of digitalization and globalization. It was our aim to encourage discussion of how literary studies respond to the ongoing changes in media and technology, politics and economy. Many have argued that the Humanities currently are in a state of crisis. We believe that the discipline seldom has found itself in such an interesting and fruitful historical moment. Several of these questions have surfaced during earlier media system changes, in particular during Romanticism and Modernism, which provided the conference with an historical frame. The conference Codex and Code also addressed questions of authenticity and originality, identity and gender, literary genres and reading practices, media and materiality, culture and popular culture, language and history, world literature, work aesthetics, translations, and canon formation.    The conference Codex and Code wanted to stimulate interdisciplinary scholarly research of the literary in a broad sense. The conference was open to scholars in Comparative Literature and in Classical and Modern Languages, Aesthetics, Media and Communication studies, Film and Theatre studies, Philosophy and adjacent disciplines. The conference was organized around a number of thematic sessions in which researchers and scholars presented and discussed papers.    The conference has received generous financial support from the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation, Magnus Bergwall foundation, Granholms foundation, Linköping University, School of Computer Science and Communication, Royal Institute of Technology, Svenska litteratursällskapet; the Swedish Academy, Swedish Science Council, and Vitterhetsakademien.

  • L’autoportrait textuel par Claude Cahun : Énonciation, formes génériques et détournement dans Aveux non avenus (1930)
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of the present thesis is to examine the modes of enunciation (“mode d’énonciation”) and the use of text genres in relation to thematic and semantic aspects of Claude Cahun’s book, Aveux non avenus (Disavowals: or, Cancelled Confessions)(1930), which consists of text fragments. Claude Cahun, who is mostly known for her photographic self-portraits, was active on the margins of surrealism in Paris in the 1920s. The text fragments of Aveux non avenus can be compared to a collage technique that she also uses in the photomontages which open each chapter of the book. As an author, Claude Cahun clearly resisted traditional confessional literature (as the title of the book also suggests), and this study focuses on how she creates images of herself through characters borrowed from mythology, the Bible, and popular and literary texts, but also through reflections on specific themes in dialogues, essays and aphorisms. The thesis examines how Aveux non avenus differs from an actual autobiography, how the fragmented self-portrait is constructed, and how the book expresses a critique of contemporary society. The method of the thesis is based on textual analysis, with the support of the concepts of modes of enunciation (”mode d’énonciation”), text genres, and détournement (”détournement”). It also rests on the contextualisation of Claude Cahun’s practice of writing in relation to the history of literary genres, surrealist avant-garde movement, and in relation to sources within cultural history and the history of women. The thesis analyses how Claude Cahun, through the use of different genres and shifting modes of enunciation, creates a fragmented, diverse, and contradictory portrait of herself, in a way that also conveys a critical image of contemporary society. The text functions, simultaneously, as a collage of different text genres. The conclusion thereby underlines the idea that the text is not arbitrarily fragmentary, but constructed on the principles that the analysis of the work has demonstrated. In previous research on Claude Cahun, the indefinite genre of the book has been emphasised. Instead, this thesis wants to show that the diversity of text genres is deliberately explored to develop varying modes of enunciation that give Claude Cahun the opporturity to reflect and give nuance to representations of the self and to convey a radical critique of society.

  • Subversion du discours orientaliste dans le tome premier de l'Histoire de la Turquie d'Alphonse de Lamartine
  • 2015
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The first volume of Histoire de la Turquie published in 1854 by the French writer Alphonse de Lamartine, is entirely dedicated to the life of Prophet Muhammed. This book raises issues which deserve to be examined in the light of Orientalism (1978) by Edward Said, who criticized the persistent Eurocentric prejudice against Arabo-Islamic peoples and their culture. That is the main purpose of this study.Based on the premise that the character of Muhammed is portrayed posi-tively by Lamartine, we hypothesized that Histoire de la Turquie is a coun-terexample to the thesis of Said. In other words, rather than participating in the discourse of orientalism (the dominant discourse of West), this book marks a break from it by subverting the traditional image of the prophet of Islam. In order to test the hypothesis, we have adopted a comparative ap-proach, allowing the comparison between Lamartine’s discourse and orien-talist discourse. The concept of "subversion" which this study is based on has been bor-rowed from Richard Terdiman’s definition in his book Discourse/Counter-Discourse (1985): it means challenging the dominant discourse or the estab-lished values. To a lesser extent, this study relies on François Dosse’s Le pari biographique (2005) who considers that "writing a biography" is never neutral. Biographers always find pretexts for rehabilitation or demystifica-tion. Also behind every biography hides a project that needs to be clarified. On the basis of the results of this study, it can be concluded that Histoire de la Turquie is not a simple chronology of Muhammed’s life, but a commit-ted text against the dominant Western view of Islam and its founder. It marks a clear break from orientalist discourse by subverting it systematical-ly. This subversive rupture is expressed in the text by the challenging of preconceived ideas, by acts of derision, negation and rejection, and, most frequently, by inversion of values. This appears to be an attempt by Lamar-tine to restore the predominantly negative portrayal of Muhammed. Histoire de la Turquie is thus a counterexample to Said’s theory, which denies the West’s ability to overcome the prejudices against Islam.

  • Utopie et atopie – les avant-gardes littéraires et théoriques dans le sillage de 1968 : Médiations, circulations et controverses théoriques de France en Scandinavie à travers quatre revues : Tel Quel, Poetik, Profil, Kris
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The year 1968 has come to symbolise the culmination of political, social and cultural protests in many Western countries. Half a century later, memories and narratives are still vivid and conflicted. Among all the institutions of power and knowledge challenged by the young generation, universities in particular became the sites of cultural and intellectual wars. As a result, both the fields of literature and philosophy have undergone profound changes in the wake of the massive influx of new theories that occurred in the late 1960s and 1970s, with Paris as a major centre. There, a new paradigm emerged as a critique of both institutionalised literary studies and structuralism. Many studies have since established the processes by which this new paradigm was mediated, received and “rebranded” in a North American context, resulting in so-called “French Theory”. As new historicism and comparative criticism remind us, such processes illustrate how cultural phenomena are shaped and transformed through contacts across national borders. This study examines these processes of mediation and reframing in a Nordic context, with particular emphasis on the transnational dimension. This dissertation focuses on the central role of four literary magazines – Tel Quel in France, Poetik in Denmark, Profil in Norway and Kris in Sweden –  in the process of producing, transmitting, discussing, and reformulating avant-garde theory, both in their local cultural contexts and within international research networks. Combining a hermeneutic approach with the historical framework, the study uses this sample of periodicals as actors at the intersection of the different subfields of cultural life (academic, intellectual, artistic, mediatic and political) to analyse the evolutions and shifts of theoretical production and circulation. The concept of utopia is used as an interpretative key to understand these avant-garde projects at the intersection of science, arts, and politics, and their various reconfigurations across time and space. In particular, the study proposes the concept of “atopia” to pinpoint a specific form of critical utopianism that underlies theoretical as well as aesthetical works. It is understood not so much as the discourse of another space or space outside, but rather as a movement of drift between spaces. The thesis shows that diverging forms of utopianism, following the respective profiles and positionings of each periodical, have acted as filters in the mediation processes and have thus impacted the significations and uses of theory in local contexts. In doing so, this study highlights the relative stability and continuity of theoretical production beyond the different ideological investments and trends in intellectual life, especially the transition from revolutionary to critical intellectuals. An in-depth analysis of these periodicals contributes to a better understanding of the dividing lines that have shaped current intellectual and academic fields both in France and in Scandinavia. It also invites us to reflect anew on the meaning of both artistic practices and theories of art in a contemporary society that seems to have lost its utopian drive.

  • Espace urbain et écriture des carrefours : Une étude de Chronique des sept misères, Solibo Magnifique et Texaco de Patrick Chamoiseau
  • 2006
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis deals with the role of urban space in Patrick Chamoiseau's first three novels. Observing that the colonial city is often stigmatized in French Caribbean literature and that Chamoiseau's style changes as his following novels are set elsewhere, the study has as its goal an assessment of the ways in which urban space determines his writing.Paradoxically Chamoiseau appropriates colonial discourses, namely ethnography and history. Focusing on the novels' ethnographic aspects, the first part examines the development of a writer-figure through whom meta-fictive problems are introduced and ways to approach the city are dramatized. The analyses show that Chamoiseau's writing negotiates between different entities in the texts and engender a polyphonic style, close to James Clifford's notion of surrealist ethnography. However the study also demonstrates that Chamoiseau plays with ethnography's documentary dimensions in order to situate his writing. The second part deals with the discourse of history. It investigates how the past is integrated in the narrative form of a chronicle, establishing a Creole identity and cultural heritage connected with urban space. Drawing from the philosophy of Deleuze and Guattari, this study shows that Chamoiseau's fictional city is constructed as a plane of composition where power and deterritorializing movements of marginalized characters operate simultaneously. Chamoiseau turns the city into a place where Creole heritage is not only inscribed in the past, but also constantly renewed. This study ultimately argues that the way Chamoiseau deals with urban space places his writing at the heart of certain esthetical reflections of Western modern literature. Since Chamoiseau's Fort-de-France is a space of transformation, the desire to situate the texts is not necessarily a sign of self-centered cultural nostalgia. Chamoiseau's urban novels question how inscription in and engagement with the local may resist forces of homogenization and add to the dynamics of the global.

  • Le Nord dans les Poèmes barbares de Leconte de Lisle
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Revue nordique des études francophones. - Stockholm : Stockholm University Press. - 2003-0401. ; 3:1, s. 52-69
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study examines the reference to the North in the Poèmes barbares (1872) by Leconte de Lisle. The reference to the barbarian races of the North is explained in the context of the Second Empire in France and determined as an aesthetic and cultural program launched by Leconte de Lisle, leader of the Parnasse. It is shown that the barbarian inspiration is part of a quest to revitalize the human spirit in the era of modernity. The endeavor is associated with the essential tendencies in the sciences of that time but also, in Leconte de Lisle’s view, with the sacred dimension of poetic discourse. Secondly, by close readings of four examples of Nordic poems, two poems from the Finnish cycle and two poems from the Scandinavian cycle, the characteristics of Leconte de Lisle’s poetic language are defined. The results show that the Nordic textuel sources – the hypotexts – are considerably reworked by the poet with the aim of making them conform to classical criteria from Greco-Roman antiquity. However, the resulting syncretism in no way excludes cultural diversity, because Leconte de Lisle makes abundant and conscient use, in his poetic practice, of proper names in foreign languages.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Revue Romane. - 0035-3906 .- 1600-0811.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The existence of a new geological age (the Anthropocene) associated with the impact of man on the earth is attracting more and more researchers, also from the humanities. The notion of the Anthropocene leads, among other things, to a reflection on human actions, on time and on morals. In the 20th century, both Ponge and Char write abundantly on nature. Their poetry reveals a deep involvement with ethical questions. This article is an ecocritical and poethical examination of their oeuvre. It is oriented towards the possible links between poetry and action, towards poetry understood as denunciation and accusation, but also as a moral and epistemological guide. If poetic dwelling on the earth (Hölderlin and Heidegger) may have a meaningful relevance to Char and Ponge it should not be thought of as utopia, nostalgia, or meditation, but rather as a lesson in the shaping of responsibility, awareness and reconciliation.

  • Le discours beur comme positionnement littéraire : Romans et textes autobiographiques franςais (2005-2006) d'auteurs issus de l'immigration maghrébine
  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The subject of this thesis is the contemporary literature written by the sons and daughters of North African immigrant families in France. Its main area of investigation is the place of this literature in the French literary field, in the Bourdieusian sense of the term, and the discursive features which motivate the ethnic based label of “Beur literature”. The study has a double approach in investigating both the argument for the socio-ethnic categorisation, and the reception of this literature in the French press. The literary corpus consists of twenty works from 2005 and 2006 by eighteen Beur writers. Thirteen of these works are subject to literary analysis. These are novels by Akli Tadjer, Zahia Rahmani, Faïza Guène, Mabrouck Rachedi, El Driss, Mohamed Razane, Houda Rouane, Nora Hamdi, Nor Eddine Boudjedia and Touhami Moualek, and three autobiographical narratives written by Razika Zitouni, Abel El Quandili and Aziz Senni. The press corpus from the corresponding period covers 14 titles of French national and regional daily papers, 8 titles of weekly general press and 6 titles of periodicals of literary and social debate. According to my hypothesis, the Beur fiction and the autobiographical narratives of my corpus are based on a common discourse that is expressed through certain literary means. A frequent strategy found in the novels is the subversion of French classics. Another feature is the constant referral to the French republican values. The novels share the latter of these two strategies with the autobiographical stories. This can be interpreted as resulting from a communication between a literary discourse and a social discourse which points toward a common ideological foundation. It also reveals the specific “Frenchness” of a literature that is often classified as “francophone” rather than “French” literature. The study of the journalistic reception confirms this aspect by the frequent referral of its authors to their ethnic and social origins.

  • Il soggetto corporale nella narrativa di Paolo Volponi
  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis offers an interpretation of three novels by Paolo Volponi (1924-1994), focusing on the representation of the human subject. The analysis shows how this representation is centred on the experiences of the body, which becomes the true subject that acts and explores the world. It is argued that this narrative strategy allows the author to develop an original account of the modern condition and contributes to the innovative character of his writing. The method employed in the study shows how the corporal subject determines the plot, shapes the text through representation of perception, and carries central narrative meanings, and is thus crucial on all the levels of the novel’s organization. In Memoriale, the problematic encounter of the subject with the new industrial reality is analyzed by focusing on the malady of the protagonist who is trapped between the countryside and the factory. This ambivalent position is seen as emblematic for the corporal subject in Volponi’s novels that is bound to nature and is a participant of history. The body emerges not only as decisive in the plot but also as the main object of writing and interpretation for the protagonist and the medical institutions. In Corporale, the protagonist loses contact with the surrounding reality; the only certainty that can be offered is in the suffering or euphoric body. The novel becomes a space where the protagonist rebels against his own historic condition and challenges the limits of the thinkable and of language, approaching the absurd. This subversion of reason is examined as a case of carnivalesque writing in Bakhtin’s sense, while the subject’s frequent states of extreme crisis are read in the light of Kristeva’s notion of abjection. The reading of Il sipario ducale is structured around the concept of chronotope, defined as a spatio-temporal interconnectedness. Each of the two chronotopes of the novel determines a particular type of corporal subject, while the ending is interpreted as the impossibility of tranquil existence outside the turmoil of history. This interpretation of Volponi’s narrative shows how by staging a subject whose body is central in the process of knowing and operating in the world, fiction both changes its character and contributes to a deeper understanding of modernity and its paradoxes.

  • Att översätta världen : Kommunikation och subversivt ärende i Henri Michaux' Voyage en Grande Garabagne
  • 2003
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The principal aim of this dissertation is to uncover signifying patterns in Henri Michaux’s travel fiction Voyage en Grande Garabagne, and to situate the work in a literary as well as an extralinguistic context. Hereby the dissertation seeks to modify the traditional image of both Voyage and Michaux’s entire literary output as creations allegedly cut off from extralinguistic reality, the literary tradition, and the reader. Ever since the first introductions to Michaux, his texts have erroneously been regarded as merely linguistic innovations or as explorations of the author’s inner landscape. The analysis of Voyage, focusing on both form and content, reveals that the work is, on the contrary, connected to sociocultural reality in a variety of ways. Among other things, it satirizes aspects of society such as religious practices, social hierarchies, judicial systems, colonialism and warfare. In many cases the linguistic form contributes to this satire by displaying verbal innovations, nonsense words, and violations of norms.By a comparative analysis of Voyage and Carl von Linné’s Iter Laponicum, Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels, Denis Diderot’s Supplément au Voyage de Bougainville, André Malraux’s La Tentation de l’Occident and Anquetil-Duperron’s ”Exposition des usages civils et religieux des parses”, the dissertation brings out Michaux’s attacks on hierarchical and firmly established written structures, and on Western society as a whole. Nevertheless, being a text of great complexity, Voyage does not forfeit it’s singularity by inscribing itself in a literary tradition. In conclusion the dissertation compares Voyage with two other works by Michaux, Mes propriétés (1929) and ”La marche dans le tunnel” (1943). It argues that in these works, the scene depicted is gradually enlarged, taking in more and more of sociocultural reality. This evolution corresponds to an expanding movement evinced by Michaux’s entire literary output.

  • Didafictions : Littérarité, didacticité et interdiscursivité dans douze romans de Robert Bober, Michel Houellebecq et Yasmina Khadra
  • 2013
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Using as example twelve novels by Robert Bober, Michel Houellebecq and Yasmina Khadra, the dissertation discusses the aesthetic and pragmatic implications of integrating didactically historical reference in fictional narrative and personal theme. Rather than reducing the works of Bober, Houellebecq and Khadra to tendency novels sculptured to pass on a predetermined message, the study discusses the aesthetic values created by didactical play. Not only does historical reference form the setting of the novels but the feelings and ideas expressed by the characters also point outwards, challenging journalistic discourse and historical fact. After underlining the obvious heritage from social realism, littérature engagée and Tendenzliteratur, the study points to the possibility of a reading mode that uncannily marries self forgetting imaginary and historical learning. Finding no comprehensive description within existing theories of genre, the thesis proposes the neologism “didafiction” for a subcategory to the novel that, by systematic interdiscursive play, call for engagement without subscribing to pre-existent doctrines. The lessons given by this literature, rather than operating through a traditionally pedagogic rhetoric, work through sophisticated artistic procedures that integrate encyclopaedia and ethics in a personal theme structure.
