  • White paper on Next Generation Metrics
  • 2020
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We - the writers - of this paper summarise a methodological debate amongst experts from our Members on ´traditional´ and ´next generation metrics´ for science, education and innovation in the light of the developments and expectations towards greater ´openness´ to realise long-term ecological, economic and social sustainability and benefit to citizens and to the world. A broad range of indicators from various sources were discussed in terms of feasibility in different contexts, as well as their suitability to serve diverse purposes. Rather than presenting a formal position on behalf of CESAER, we present our synthesis of this debate. In chapter one, we provide the definitions, describe the methodology used and set the scope of this paper, thus setting the scene for the following chapters. In chapter two, we report on our findings on metrics dealing with (open) science. Ever since E. Garfield’s Journal Impact Factor (JIF) came into use in the mid-70s, and certainly with the h-index proposed by the physicist J. E. Hirsch in 2005, the rise of quantitative metrics in the assessment of research has seemed to be unstoppable - up to the use of ´views´, ´likes´ and ´tweets´. While in times of accountability and competing for visibility and funds, it is only reasonable to focus on the measurability and comparability of metrics as efficient means to display performance, the limitations of doing so are obvious. As a result, in the past years, a countermovement criticising this practice and questioning the validity of the metrics and reliability of the data used has become stronger. Moreover, there are strong (political) expectations to make science more open. Metrics for (open) education and training are the topic of chapter three. In many (global) rankings of higher education institutions, the indicators used reflect the model of traditional, established, wealthy and largely English-speaking research universities (Hazelkorn, 2015). They are, therefore, ill-suited to truly give an idea about the quality or the performance of higher education more broadly, and they are limited in helping universities to set priorities. They do, however, reveal that there is still a lack of meaningful internationally comparable information on these matters. By covering (open) innovation in chapter four, we complete the discussion of the mission of our Members. Open innovation promotes approaches that boost disruptive innovation rather than incremental, stimulate inventions produced by outsiders and founders in start-ups, and is based on a view on the world of widely distributed knowledge. We synthesised our findings on the confrontation between ´traditional´ and ´next generation metrics´ and present ten each for science, education and innovation for use mainly within our Members and to monitor the desired progress over time (see annexe I). While this might be interpreted as sufficient responsiveness to external expectations on our behalf, we instead advanced further and in chapter five suggest that universities strive towards ´progressive metrics´ and highlight the need to acknowledge knowledge as a common good, promote a culture of quality, risk-taking and trust and measure the contribution to sustainability. That is why we conclude this paper with ideas for progressive indicators in annexe II, outlining an agenda for future work to stay at the forefront of science, education and innovation; to benchmark against like-minded institutions; and to pursue institutional development paths; and - ultimately - to optimise our contributions to society and the world.

  • The use of acoustic emission monitoring to rank paper materials with respect to their fracture toughness
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Society for Experimental Mechanics, Inc.. - : Society for experimental mechanics. ; , s. 133-137
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, a simplified Acoustic Emission (AE) equipment, in essence an AE signal conditioner and a USB (Universal Serial Bus) data acquisition system, is used to study what happens in paper structures during mechanical loading. By the use of such equipment, some parameters that can be extracted are e.g. the stress and strain at onset of AE, the stress and strain at the onset of rapid AE defined as some numerical factor (larger then one) times the initial emission rate, the emission rate at the first stage of loading and the stress and strain at final failure i.e. when the specimen loses its load carrying ability. In this study however, the interest is focused on one particular parameter i.e. the elastic strain energy density Wc at onset of AE. This is a parameter with a clear physical meaning and in this study, the correlation between this parameter and a fracture toughness measure, is investigated. The conclusion is that when nine different paper materials (with a large span regarding properties) are considered, there is a correlation (however not linear) between these two parameters.

  • Serum B vitamin levels and risk of lung cancer
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). - : American Medical Association. - 0098-7484 .- 1538-3598. ; 303:23, s. 2377-2385
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • CONTEXT: B vitamins and factors related to 1-carbon metabolism help to maintain DNA integrity and regulate gene expression and may affect cancer risk. OBJECTIVE: To investigate if 1-carbon metabolism factors are associated with onset of lung cancer. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) recruited 519,978 participants from 10 countries between 1992 and 2000, of whom 385,747 donated blood. By 2006, 899 lung cancer cases were identified and 1770 control participants were individually matched by country, sex, date of birth, and date of blood collection. Serum levels were measured for 6 factors of 1-carbon metabolism and cotinine. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Odds ratios (ORs) of lung cancer by serum levels of 4 B vitamins (B(2), B(6), folate [B(9)], and B(12)), methionine, and homocysteine. RESULTS: Within the entire EPIC cohort, the age-standardized incidence rates of lung cancer (standardized to the world population, aged 35-79 years) were 6.6, 44.9, and 156.1 per 100,000 person-years among never, former, and current smokers for men, respectively. The corresponding incidence rates for women were 7.1, 23.9, and 100.9 per 100,000 person-years, respectively. After accounting for smoking, a lower risk for lung cancer was seen for elevated serum levels of B(6) (fourth vs first quartile OR, 0.44; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.33-0.60; P for trend <.000001), as well as for serum methionine (fourth vs first quartile OR, 0.52; 95% CI, 0.39-0.69; P for trend <.000001). Similar and consistent decreases in risk were observed in never, former, and current smokers, indicating that results were not due to confounding by smoking. The magnitude of risk was also constant with increasing length of follow-up, indicating that the associations were not explained by preclinical disease. A lower risk was also seen for serum folate (fourth vs first quartile OR, 0.68; 95% CI, 0.51-0.90; P for trend = .001), although this was apparent only for former and current smokers. When participants were classified by median levels of serum methionine and B(6), having above-median levels of both was associated with a lower lung cancer risk overall (OR, 0.41; 95% CI, 0.31-0.54), as well as separately among never (OR, 0.36; 95% CI, 0.18-0.72), former (OR, 0.51; 95% CI, 0.34-0.76), and current smokers (OR, 0.42; 95% CI, 0.27-0.65). CONCLUSION: Serum levels of vitamin B(6) and methionine were inversely associated with risk of lung cancer.

  • Circulating Folate and Vitamin B12 and Risk of Prostate Cancer : A Collaborative Analysis of Individual Participant Data from Six Cohorts Including 6875 Cases and 8104 Controls.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: European Urology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0302-2838 .- 1873-7560. ; 70:6, s. 941-951
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Folate and vitamin B12 are essential for maintaining DNA integrity and may influence prostate cancer (PCa) risk, but the association with clinically relevant, advanced stage, and high-grade disease is unclear.OBJECTIVE: To investigate the associations between circulating folate and vitamin B12 concentrations and risk of PCa overall and by disease stage and grade.DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A study was performed with a nested case-control design based on individual participant data from six cohort studies including 6875 cases and 8104 controls; blood collection from 1981 to 2008, and an average follow-up of 8.9 yr (standard deviation 7.3). Odds ratios (ORs) of incident PCa by study-specific fifths of circulating folate and vitamin B12 were calculated using multivariable adjusted conditional logistic regression.OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS AND STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Incident PCa and subtype by stage and grade.RESULTS AND LIMITATIONS: Higher folate and vitamin B12 concentrations were associated with a small increase in risk of PCa (ORs for the top vs bottom fifths were 1.13 [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.02-1.26], ptrend=0.018, for folate and 1.12 [95% CI, 1.01-1.25], ptrend=0.017, for vitamin B12), with no evidence of heterogeneity between studies. The association with folate varied by tumour grade (pheterogeneity<0.001); higher folate concentration was associated with an elevated risk of high-grade disease (OR for the top vs bottom fifth: 2.30 [95% CI, 1.28-4.12]; ptrend=0.001), with no association for low-grade disease. There was no evidence of heterogeneity in the association of folate with risk by stage or of vitamin B12 with risk by stage or grade of disease (pheterogeneity>0.05). Use of single blood-sample measurements of folate and B12 concentrations is a limitation.CONCLUSIONS: The association between higher folate concentration and risk of high-grade disease, not evident for low-grade disease, suggests a possible role for folate in the progression of clinically relevant PCa and warrants further investigation.PATIENT SUMMARY: Folate, a vitamin obtained from foods and supplements, is important for maintaining cell health. In this study, however, men with higher blood folate levels were at greater risk of high-grade (more aggressive) prostate cancer compared with men with lower folate levels. Further research is needed to investigate the possible role of folate in the progression of this disease.

  • Gold nanoparticle single electron transistor with carbon nanotube leads
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 79:13, s. 2106-2108
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have used carbon nanotubes to electrically contact a 7 nm gold particle by scanning-probe manipulation. The result was a single-electron transistor showing a periodic modulation of the current as a function of gate voltage for temperatures up to ∼200 K, with the particle responsible for the main features of the electron transport. This interpretation could be verified when the particle was removed and the two nanotubes were moved into electrical contact.

  • Genetic polymorphisms in 15q25 and 19q13 loci, cotinine levels, and risk of lung cancer in EPIC
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention. - 1055-9965 .- 1538-7755. ; 20:10, s. 2250-2261
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Backgrounds: Multiple polymorphisms affecting smoking behavior have been identified through genome-wide association studies. Circulating levels of the nicotine metabolite cotinine is a marker of recent smoking exposure. Hence, genetic variants influencing smoking behavior are expected to be associated with cotinine levels.METHODS: We conducted an analysis in a lung cancer case-control study nested within the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort. We investigated the effects of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) previously associated with smoking behavior on (i) circulating cotinine and (ii) lung cancer risk. A total of 894 cases and 1,805 controls were analyzed for cotinine and genotyped for 10 polymorphisms on 7p14, 8p11, 10q23, 15q25, and 19q13.RESULTS: Two variants in the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunit genes CHRNA5 and CHRNA3 on 15q25, rs16969968 and rs578776, were associated with cotinine (P = 0.001 and 0.03, respectively) in current smokers and with lung cancer risk (P < 0.001 and P = 0.001, respectively). Two 19q13 variants, rs7937 and rs4105144, were associated with increased cotinine (P = 0.003 and P < 0.001, respectively) but decreased lung cancer risk (P = 0.01 for both, after adjusting for cotinine). Variants in 7p14, 8p11, and 10q23 were not associated with cotinine or lung cancer risk.CONCLUSIONS: 15q25 and 19q13 SNPs were associated with circulating cotinine. The directions of association for 15q25 variants with cotinine were in accordance with that expected of lung cancer risk, whereas SNPs on 19q13 displayed contrasting associations of cotinine and lung cancer that require further investigation.Impact: This study is the largest to date investigating the effects of polymorphisms affecting smoking behavior on lung cancer risk using circulating cotinine measures as proxies for recent smoking behavior.
