  • Photometric and spectroscopic evolution of the interacting transient AT 2016jbu(Gaia16cfr)
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 513:4, s. 5642-5665
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the results from a high-cadence, multiwavelength observation campaign of AT 2016jbu (aka Gaia16cfr), an interacting transient. This data set complements the current literature by adding higher cadence as well as extended coverage of the light-curve evolution and late-time spectroscopic evolution. Photometric coverage reveals that AT 2016jbu underwent significant photometric variability followed by two luminous events, the latter of which reached an absolute magnitude of MV ∼ −18.5 mag. This is similar to the transient SN 2009ip whose nature is still debated. Spectra are dominated by narrow emission lines and show a blue continuum during the peak of the second event. AT 2016jbu shows signatures of a complex, non-homogeneous circumstellar material (CSM). We see slowly evolving asymmetric hydrogen line profiles, with velocities of 500 km s−1 seen in narrow emission features from a slow-moving CSM, and up to 10 000 km s−1 seen in broad absorption from some high-velocity material. Late-time spectra (∼+1 yr) show a lack of forbidden emission lines expected from a core-collapse supernova and are dominated by strong emission from H, He I, and Ca II. Strong asymmetric emission features, a bumpy light curve, and continually evolving spectra suggest an inhibit nebular phase. We compare the evolution of H α among SN 2009ip-like transients and find possible evidence for orientation angle effects. The light-curve evolution of AT 2016jbu suggests similar, but not identical, circumstellar environments to other SN 2009ip-like transients.

  • Challenges of ecological restoration : Lessons from forests in northern Europe
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Biological Conservation. - : Elsevier BV. - 0006-3207 .- 1873-2917. ; 167, s. 248-256
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The alarming rate of ecosystem degradation has raised the need for ecological restoration throughout different biomes and continents. North European forests may appear as one of the least vulnerable ecosystems from a global perspective, since forest cover is not rapidly decreasing and many ecosystem services remain at high level. However, extensive areas of northern forests are heavily exploited and have lost a major part of their biodiversity value. There is a strong requirement to restore these areas towards a more natural condition in order to meet the targets of the Convention on Biological Diversity. Several northern countries are now taking up this challenge by restoring forest biodiversity with increasing intensity. The ecology and biodiversity of boreal forests are relatively well understood making them a good model for restoration activities in many other forest ecosystems. Here we introduce northern forests as an ecosystem, discuss the historical and recent human impact and provide a brief status report on the ecological restoration projects and research already conducted there. Based on this discussion, we argue that before any restoration actions commence, the ecology of the target ecosystem should be established with the need for restoration carefully assessed and the outcome properly monitored. Finally, we identify the most important challenges that need to be solved in order to carry out efficient restoration with powerful and long-term positive impacts on biodiversity: coping with unpredictability, maintaining connectivity in time and space, assessment of functionality, management of conflicting interests and social restrictions and ensuring adequate funding. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

  • The long-lived Type IIn SN 2015da : Infrared echoes and strong interaction within an extended massive shell star star star
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 635
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we report the results of the first similar to four years of spectroscopic and photometric monitoring of the Type IIn supernova SN 2015da (also known as PSN J13522411+3941286, or iPTF16tu). The supernova exploded in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 5337 in a relatively highly extinguished environment. The transient showed prominent narrow Balmer lines in emission at all times and a slow rise to maximum in all bands. In addition, early observations performed by amateur astronomers give a very well-constrained explosion epoch. The observables are consistent with continuous interaction between the supernova ejecta and a dense and extended H-rich circumstellar medium. The presence of such an extended and dense medium is difficult to reconcile with standard stellar evolution models, since the metallicity at the position of SN 2015da seems to be slightly subsolar. Interaction is likely the mechanism powering the light curve, as confirmed by the analysis of the pseudo bolometric light curve, which gives a total radiated energy greater than or similar to 10(51) erg. Modeling the light curve in the context of a supernova shock breakout through a dense circumstellar medium allowed us to infer the mass of the prexisting gas to be similar or equal to 8 M-circle dot, with an extreme mass-loss rate for the progenitor star similar or equal to 0.6 M-circle dot yr(-1), suggesting that most of the circumstellar gas was produced during multiple eruptive events. Near- and mid-infrared observations reveal a fluxexcess in these domains, similar to those observed in SN 2010jl and other interacting transients, likely due to preexisting radiatively heated dust surrounding the supernova. By modeling the infrared excess, we infer a mass greater than or similar to 0.4 x 10(-3) M-circle dot for the dust.

  • The binding mechanism of the virulence factor Streptococcus suis adhesin P subtype to globotetraosylceramide is associated with systemic disease
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Biological Chemistry. - 0021-9258 .- 1083-351X. ; 295:42, s. 14305-14324
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Streptococcus suis is part of the pig commensal microbiome but strains can also be pathogenic, causing pneumonia and meningitis in pigs as well as zoonotic meningitis. According to genomic analysis, S. suis is divided into asymptomatic carriage, respiratory and systemic strains with distinct genomic signatures. Because the strategies to target pathogenic S. suis are limited, new therapeutic approaches are needed. The virulence factor S. suis adhesin P (SadP) recognizes the galabiose Gal alpha 1-4Gal-oligosaccharide. Based on its oligosaccharide fine specificity, SadP can be divided into subtypes P-N and P-O. We show here that subtype P-N is distributed in the systemic strains causing meningitis, whereas type P-O is found in asymptomatic carriage and respiratory strains. Both types of SadP are shown to predominantly bind to pig lung globotriaosylceramide (Gb3). However, SadP adhesin from systemic subtype P-N strains also binds to globotetraosylceramide (Gb4). Mutagenesis studies of the galabiose-binding domain of type P-N SadP adhesin showed that the amino acid asparagine 285, which is replaced by an aspartate residue in type P-O SadP, was required for binding to Gb4 and, strikingly, was also required for interaction with the glycomimetic inhibitor phenylurea-galabiose. Molecular dynamics simulations provided insight into the role of Asn-285 for Gb4 and phenylurea-galabiose binding, suggesting additional hydrogen bonding to terminal GalNAc of Gb4 and the urea group. Thus, the Asn-285-mediated molecular mechanism of type P-N SadP binding to Gb4 could be used to selectively target S. suis in systemic disease without interfering with commensal strains, opening up new avenues for interventional strategies against this pathogen.

  • Resonant shake-up satellites in photoemission at the Ga 3p photothreshold in GaN
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Solid State Communications. - : Elsevier BV. - 1879-2766 .- 0038-1098. ; 136:4, s. 191-195
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Photoemission spectra recorded near the Ga 3p photothreshold from GaN have been found to contain satellites of the main Ga 3d emission line. The intensity of these satellites resonate at this threshold, and are associated with a 3d(8) state. The correlation energies and binding energies for the satellite multiplet have been measured for the satellite and related Auger transitions. The satellite multiplet contains additional constant binding energy features not observed in previous studies of other Ga compounds. The present results are compared with those for Gal? and GaAs.

  • Workforce participation and activities in Parkinson's disease patients receiving device-aided therapy
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Acta Neurologica Scandinavica. - : Hindawi Limited. - 0001-6314 .- 1600-0404. ; 138:1, s. 78-84
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: Many countries have an aging population, and it is thus likely that Parkinson's disease (PD) will become an increasing health problem. It is important to ensure this group can use their resources in the best way possible, including remaining in the work market. This study aimed to investigate workforce participation and daily activities among patients with PD receiving device-aided therapy to provide new knowledge that may be used to inform decisions about these therapy options.Materials and Methods:This was a retrospective, descriptive quantitative pilot study, including 67 patients with PD from 3 centers in Sweden and Denmark. Included patients were younger than 67years at the time of introduction of device-aided therapy. Eligible patients were identified by the Swedish national Parkinson patient registry or by the treating neurologist. Quantitative interviews were made by telephone. Results:A majority of the patients could perform the same, or more, amount of activities approximately 5years after the introduction of device-aided therapy. A small number of patients receiving deep brain stimulation (DBS) and levodopa-carbidopa intestinal gel (LCIG) were able to increase their work capacity within 1year of initiating device-aided therapy and a remarkably high share could still work at the end-point of this study, approximately 15years since the diagnosis of PD.Conclusions:Device-aided therapy may sustain or increase daily activities and workforce participation in patients with PD who have not yet reached retirement age. There is need for prospective studies, both quantitative and qualitative, to confirm these results.

  • Strong phonon replicas in Be 1s photoemission spectra
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 86:19, s. 4398-4401
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Strong phonon replicas in Be 1s photoemission spectra were investigated. The fine structure caused by intrinsic excitation of a narrow band of optical phonons was discussed in the 1s photoemission proces. The excitations of the optical Be phonons in the photoemission process caused fine structures. It was found that the phonon replicas in Be metal were strong due to large size misfit between neutral and core-ionized Be.

    • This paper presents experimental results with helical magnetic flux-compression generators (FCGs). FCGs convert the chemical energy bond in explosives into electric energy. The generator had an initial inductance of 23 μH and was operated into a load of 0.2 μH. The generator is charged with 0.27 kg of high-explosives (PBXN-5). Various types of diagnostics were used to monitor the operation of the generator, including current probes, optical fibres, and piezo gauges. The results are analysed and the expansion of the armature compared with hydrodynamic simulations.

  • Large-scale geographical variation confirms that climate change causes birds to lay earlier
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Royal Society of London Series B-Biological Sciences. - : The Royal Society. - 0962-8452 .- 1471-2954. ; 271:1549, s. 1657-1662
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Advances in the phenology of organisms are often attributed to climate change, but alternatively, may reflect a publication bias towards advances and may be caused by environmental factors unrelated to climate change. Both factors are investigated using the breeding dates of 25 long-term studied populations of Ficedula flycatchers across Europe. Trends in spring temperature varied markedly between study sites, and across populations the advancement of laying date was stronger in areas where the spring temperatures increased more, giving support to the theory that climate change causally affects breeding date advancement.

  • Impact of androgen deprivation therapy on apparent diffusion coefficient and T2w MRI for histogram and texture analysis with respect to focal radiotherapy of prostate cancer
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Strahlentherapie und Onkologie (Print). - : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 0179-7158 .- 1439-099X. ; 195:5, s. 402-411
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Accurate prostate cancer (PCa) detection is essential for planning focal external beam radiotherapy (EBRT). While biparametric MRI (bpMRI) including T2-weighted (T2w) and diffusion-weighted images (DWI) is an accurate tool to localize PCa, its value is less clear in the case of additional androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). The aim of this study was to investigate the value of a textural feature (TF) approach on bpMRI analysis in prostate cancer patients with and without neoadjuvant ADT with respect to future dose-painting applications.Methods: 28 PCa patients (54–80 years) with (n = 14) and without (n = 14) ADT who underwent bpMRI with T2w and DWI were analyzed retrospectively. Lesions, central gland (CG), and peripheral zone (PZ) were delineated by an experienced urogenital radiologist based on localized pre-therapeutic histopathology. Histogram parameters and 20 Haralick TF were calculated. Regional differences (i. e., tumor vs. PZ, tumor vs. CG) were analyzed for all imaging parameters. Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to measure diagnostic performance to distinguish PCa from benign prostate tissue and to identify the features with best discriminative power in both patient groups. Results: The obtained sensitivities were equivalent or superior when utilizing the TF in the no-ADT group, while specificity was higher for the histogram parameters. However, in the ADT group, TF outperformed the conventional histogram parameters in both specificity and sensitivity. Rule-in and rule-out criteria for ADT patients could exclusively be defined with the aid of TF.Conclusions: The TF approach has the potential for quantitative image-assisted boost volume delineation in PCa patients even if they are undergoing neoadjuvant ADT.

  • Trial of Deferiprone in Parkinson’s Disease
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: New England Journal of Medicine. - : Massachusetts Medical Society. - 0028-4793 .- 1533-4406. ; 387:22, s. 2045-2055
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUNDIron content is increased in the substantia nigra of persons with Parkinson's disease and may contribute to the pathophysiology of the disorder. Early research suggests that the iron chelator deferiprone can reduce nigrostriatal iron content in persons with Parkinson's disease, but its effects on disease progression are unclear.METHODSWe conducted a multicenter, phase 2, randomized, double-blind trial involving participants with newly diagnosed Parkinson's disease who had never received levodopa. Participants were assigned (in a 1:1 ratio) to receive oral deferiprone at a dose of 15 mg per kilogram of body weight twice daily or matched placebo for 36 weeks. Dopaminergic therapy was withheld unless deemed necessary for symptom control. The primary outcome was the change in the total score on the Movement Disorder Society-sponsored revision of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS; range, 0 to 260, with higher scores indicating more severe impairment) at 36 weeks. Secondary and exploratory clinical outcomes at up to 40 weeks included measures of motor and nonmotor disability. Brain iron content measured with the use of magnetic resonance imaging was also an exploratory outcome.RESULTSA total of 372 participants were enrolled; 186 were assigned to receive deferiprone and 186 to receive placebo. Progression of symptoms led to the initiation of dopaminergic therapy in 22.0% of the participants in the deferiprone group and 2.7% of those in the placebo group. The mean MDS-UPDRS total score at baseline was 34.3 in the deferiprone group and 33.2 in the placebo group and increased (worsened) by 15.6 points and 6.3 points, respectively (difference, 9.3 points; 95% confidence interval, 6.3 to 12.2; P<0.001). Nigrostriatal iron content decreased more in the deferiprone group than in the placebo group. The main serious adverse events with deferiprone were agranulocytosis in 2 participants and neutropenia in 3 participants.CONCLUSIONSIn participants with early Parkinson's disease who had never received levodopa and in whom treatment with dopaminergic medications was not planned, deferiprone was associated with worse scores in measures of parkinsonism than those with placebo over a period of 36 weeks.

  • Phosphorylated α-synuclein in skin Schwann cells : a new biomarker for multiple system atrophy
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Brain. - : Oxford University Press. - 0006-8950 .- 1460-2156. ; 146:3, s. 1065-1074
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is characterized by accumulation of phosphorylated α-synuclein (p-syn) as glial cytoplasmic inclusions in the brain and a specific biomarker for this disorder is urgently needed. We aimed at investigating if p-syn can also be detected in skin Remak non-myelinating Schwann cells (RSCs) as Schwann cell cytoplasmic inclusions (SCCi) and may represent a reliable clinical biomarker for MSA.This cross-sectional diagnostic study evaluated skin p-syn in 96 patients: 46 with probable MSA (29 with parkinsonism type MSA and 17 with cerebellar type MSA), 34 with Parkinson's disease (PD) and 16 with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). We also included 50 healthy control subjects. Patients were recruited from five different medical centres. P-syn aggregates in skin sections were stained by immunofluorescence, followed by analyses with confocal microscopy and immuno-electron microscopy. All analyses were performed in a blinded fashion.Overall, p-syn aggregates were found in 78% of MSA patients and 100% of patients with PD/DLB, whereas they could not be detected in controls. As for neuronal aggregates 78% of MSA patients were positive for p-syn in somatic neurons, whereas all PD/DLB patients were positive in autonomic neurons. When analysing the presence of p-syn in RSCs, 74% of MSA patients were positive, whereas no such SCCi could be observed in PD/DLB patients. Analyses by immuno-electron microscopy confirmed that SCCi were only found in cases with MSA and thus absent in those with PD/DLB.In conclusion, our findings demonstrate that (i) fibrillar p-syn in RSCs is a pathological hallmark of MSA and may be used as a specific and sensitive disease biomarker; (ii) in Lewy body synucleinopathies (PD/DLB) only neurons contain p-syn deposits; and (iii) the cell-specific deposition of p-syn in the skin thus mirrors that of the brain in many aspects and suggests that non-myelinated glial cells are also involved in the MSA pathogenesis.

  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - 0168-9002. ; 394:1-2, s. 243-250
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the performance of a grazing incidence spherical grating monochromator installed at MAX I and designed to cover the photon energy range from about 15-200 eV with high resolving power. It is intended mainly for angle-resolved photoemission work. Therefore, both refocusing optics, to obtain a small spot size at the sample, and a higher order light suppressor, to reduce the content of higher orders, have been incorporated in the design. The theoretically calculated energy resolution is presented and compared to the resolution obtained in photoabsorption measurements of gas-phase He, Ne, Kr, Xe, and N2. The possibility to reduce the influence of higher orders is illustrated by photoemission data collected on Si (100). The experimental results show that the monochromator fulfills the expected design goals.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Acta Physica Polonica. A. - 0587-4246 .- 1898-794X. ; 115:6, s. 976-977
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The output from narrow-band high-power microwave (HPM) sources, such as the virtual cathode oscillator (vircator) and the magnetically insulated line oscillator (MILO), is strongly dependent on the voltage pulse feed. A rectangular, flat-top voltage pulse can be achieved by the use of a transmission line as a pulse-forming unit. The development in high-voltage cable technology has made them useful as parts of high-voltage and high-power generator systems. The generator is designed to deliver a 200 ns voltage pulse of 500 kV into a 10 Omega unmatched load with an electric power of 25 GW. The generator has an impedance of 2 Q. The primary energy storage of the generator consists of a 50 kV, 20 U capacitor bank. The 50 kV is discharged into a transformer that charges a pulse-forming line to 550 kV. When charged, the pulse-forming line is discharged into the load via a spark gap. This paper presents results from initial testing of the generator.

    • A cable-based 25-GW pulsed-power generator with output impedance of 2 is presented. It is designed to deliver a 200-ns-long 500-kV pulse into a 10 load. The primary energy storage of the generator consists of a 50-kV 20-kJ capacitor bank. The 50-kV capacitor bank is discharged into a 1 : 12 transformer. The transformer is designed to charge a pulse-forming line (PFL) to 600 kV. When charged, the PFL is discharged into a load via a spark gap. The spark gap is located in a coaxial system containing deionized water together with the cable endings of the PFL and transformer. The electric field at the cable endings is refractively graded by the high permittivity of the surrounding water. The primary and secondary windings consist of high-voltage cables that are interleaved and wound together. The PFL consists of eight 40-m-long 110-kV coaxial cables with both ends connected to the load. Each cable screen is grounded in the middle and connected in parallel. The cables have a characteristic impedance of 30 . The parallel cable setup gives the PFL an impedance of 2 . The total length, height, and width of the pulse generator are 4, 2, and 1.2 m, respectively.

  • The bumpy light curve of Type IIn supernova iPTF13z over 3 years
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 605
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A core-collapse (CC) supernova (SN) of Type IIn is dominated by the interaction of SN ejecta with the circumstellar medium (CSM). Some SNe IIn (e.g. SN 2006jd) have episodes of re-brightening (''bumps'') in their light curves. We present iPTF13z, a Type IIn SN discovered on 2013 February 1 by the intermediate Palomar Transient Factory (iPTF). This SN showed at least five bumps in its declining light curve between 130 and 750 days after discovery. We analyse this peculiar behaviour and try to infer the properties of the CSM, of the SN explosion, and the nature of the progenitor star. We obtained multi-band optical photometry for over 1000 days after discovery with the P48 and P60 telescopes at Palomar Observatory. We obtained low-resolution optical spectra during the same period. We did an archival search for progenitor outbursts. We analyse the photometry and the spectra, and compare iPTF13z to other SNe IIn. In particular we derive absolute magnitudes, colours, a pseudo-bolometric light curve, and the velocities of the different components of the spectral lines. A simple analytical model is used to estimate the properties of the CSM. iPTF13z had a light curve peaking at Mr <~ -18.3 mag. The five bumps during its decline phase had amplitudes ranging from 0.4 to 0.9 mag and durations between 20 and 120 days. The most prominent bumps appeared in all the different optical bands, when covered. The spectra of this SN showed typical SN IIn characteristics, with emission lines of Hα (with broad component FWHM ~ 103 - 104 km s-1 and narrow component FWHM ~ 102 km s-1) and He I, but also with Fe II, Ca II, Na I D and Hβ P Cygni profiles (with velocities of ~ 103 km  s-1). A pre-explosion outburst was identified lasting >~ 50 days, with Mr  -15 mag around 210 days before discovery. Large, variable progenitor mass-loss rates (>~ 0.01 MSun yr-1) and CSM densities (>~ 10-16 g cm-3) are derived. The SN was hosted by a metal-poor dwarf galaxy at redshift z = 0.0328. We suggest that the light curve bumps of iPTF13z arose from SN ejecta interacting with denser regions in the CSM, possibly produced by the eruptions of a luminous blue variable progenitor star.

    • OBJECTIVES:An oral dispersible microtablet formulation of levodopa/carbidopa 5/1.25 mg (LC-5) was developed for individualized repeated dosing. The aim was to compare pharmacokinetic profiles of LC-5 and levodopa/carbidopa/entacapone (LCE).MATERIALS AND METHODS:A randomized, crossover study was carried out in 11 healthy subjects. Plasma concentrations of levodopa, carbidopa and 3-O-methyldopa were determined after intake of 300 mg levodopa during the day, either as three intakes of 100/25/200 mg LCE or as a morning dose of 75/18.25 mg followed by five repeated doses of 45/11.25 mg LC-5.RESULTS:Repeated dosing (2.4-hourly) with LC-5 microtablets compared to LCE (6-hourly) avoided long periods with low plasma levodopa levels. Time to maximum plasma concentrations was significantly shorter for LC-5. LC-5 showed lower fluctuation index (FI) in plasma compared to LCE (ANOVA P = 0.0028). FI for dose 2-5 was on average 1.26 for levodopa in LC-5, and 2.23 for dose 1-2 of LCE. The ratio between the two mean FI:s is 0.565; that is, LC-5 gave nearly half the FI as compared to LCE.CONCLUSIONS:Fractionation of levodopa with LC-5 into small, frequent administrations as compared to standard administrations of LCE decreased the FI in plasma for both levodopa and carbidopa by nearly half.

    • The design of a photoemission microprobe beamline at the MAX laboratory is presented. The beamline will utilize the radiation from a 26 period undulator on the 550-MeV MAX storage ring. The beamline will be capable of providing about 1010 photons/s of monochromatized radiation (bandwidth better than 0.25 eV) in the energy range of 20 to 150 eV focused into a submicrometer focal spot. It will be used for scanning photoemission experiments with a lateral resolution better than 1 μm. The optical system is comprised of a plane-grating monochromator with a Kirkpatrick-Baez objective and a specially designed ellipsoidal focusing mirror.

  • A national approach for automated collection of standardized and population-based radiation therapy data in Sweden
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Radiotherapy and Oncology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-8140 .- 1879-0887. ; 119:2, s. 344-350
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: To develop an infrastructure for structured and automated collection of interoperable radiation therapy (RT) data into a national clinical quality registry. Materials and methods: The present study was initiated in 2012 with the participation of seven of the 15 hospital departments delivering RT in Sweden. A national RT nomenclature and a database for structured unified storage of RT data at each site (Medical Information Quality Archive, MIQA) have been developed. Aggregated data from the MIQA databases are sent to a national RT registry located on the same IT platform (INCA) as the national clinical cancer registries. Results: The suggested naming convention has to date been integrated into the clinical workflow at 12 of 15 sites, and MIQA is installed at six of these. Involvement of the remaining 3/15 RT departments is ongoing, and they are expected to be part of the infrastructure by 2016. RT data collection from ARIA (R), Mosaiq (R), Eclipse (TM), and Oncentra (R) is supported. Manual curation of RT-structure information is needed for approximately 10% of target volumes, but rarely for normal tissue structures, demonstrating a good compliance to the RT nomenclature. Aggregated dose/volume descriptors are calculated based on the information in MIQA and sent to INCA using a dedicated service (MIQA2INCA). Correct linkage of data for each patient to the clinical cancer registries on the INCA platform is assured by the unique Swedish personal identity number. Conclusions: An infrastructure for structured and automated prospective collection of syntactically inter operable RT data into a national clinical quality registry for RT data is under implementation. Future developments include adapting MIQA to other treatment modalities (e.g. proton therapy and brachytherapy) and finding strategies to harmonize structure delineations. How the RT registry should comply with domain-specific ontologies such as the Radiation Oncology Ontology (ROO) is under discussion.
