  • How do teachers interpret and transform entrepreneurship education?
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Curriculum Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0022-0272 .- 1366-5839. ; 51:4, s. 554-566
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the last decade, entrepreneurship education has become a central curricular topic in many locations in the world. In Sweden, entrepreneurship education was implemented in the curriculum for the first time in 2011, as something that should be included in all upper secondary school programmes. In this article, we focus on one of these programmes, the handicraft programme, investigating how entrepreneurship education is formulated in the latest curriculum and how teachers understand and transform such content in their teaching. Drawing on Bernstein’s concepts of classification and framing, we illustrate how entrepreneurship education in the Swedish curriculum has a ‘dual definition’, representing very different framing and classification, but still clearly belongs in a ‘market relevance’ discourse. This is expressed through the way in which the concept is transformed by teachers in their teaching. We also find that entrepreneurship education has low legitimacy among teachers, particularly when it is classified weakly. The weak framing and classification, taken together with the low legitimacy among teachers, are likely to lead to very different transformations of entrepreneurship education in different educational contexts. In the long run, this could have a negative effect on the equivalence of teaching at upper secondary school.

  • One Omics Approach Does Not Rule Them All : The Metabolome and the Epigenome Join Forces in Haematological Malignancies
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: EPIGENOMES. - : MDPI. - 2075-4655. ; 5:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aberrant DNA methylation, dysregulation of chromatin-modifying enzymes, and microRNAs (miRNAs) play a crucial role in haematological malignancies. These epimutations, with an impact on chromatin accessibility and transcriptional output, are often associated with genomic instability and the emergence of drug resistance, disease progression, and poor survival. In order to exert their functions, epigenetic enzymes utilize cellular metabolites as co-factors and are highly dependent on their availability. By affecting the expression of metabolic enzymes, epigenetic modifiers may aid the generation of metabolite signatures that could be utilized as targets and biomarkers in cancer. This interdependency remains often neglected and poorly represented in studies, despite well-established methods to study the cellular metabolome. This review critically summarizes the current knowledge in the field to provide an integral picture of the interplay between epigenomic alterations and the cellular metabolome in haematological malignancies. Our recent findings defining a distinct metabolic signature upon response to enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) inhibition in multiple myeloma (MM) highlight how a shift of preferred metabolic pathways may potentiate novel treatments. The suggested link between the epigenome and the metabolome in haematopoietic tumours holds promise for the use of metabolic signatures as possible biomarkers of response to treatment.

  • Electricity across borders : regional cost sharing of grid investments, international benchmarking and the electricity demand of an ageing population
  • 2013
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis deals with issues related to investments and regulation of high-voltage electricity grids, and to the households’ demand for electricity. The thesis consists of four self-contained papers. Papers I and II address the challenge of reaching agreements on the expansions of electricity grid infrastructure across national borders. Agreements can be problematic to reach due to regional welfare-effects from new infrastructure, which leads to questions of how investment costs should be shared and under what circumstances cooperation will be rational for all nations. This relates to both the allocation rule used, and the number of countries involved in the sharing (e.g., bilateral or regional). These issues are analysed by game theoretic methods and a numerical optimisation model of the electricity systems of six European countries. Results show that proportional sharing of investment costs in relation to benefits is the most practical solution, and that it also gives outcomes in terms of welfare and transmission capacity that are very close to the regional welfare optimum. The utilities responsible for the transmission system operation and the grid development are the national Transmission System Operators (TSO). The TSOs are monopoly utilities that operate under regulatory oversight. The absence of competition in this sector means that regulators have an important role in monitoring performance and ensuring overall efficiency. One way to do this is by frontier benchmarking methods. However, there are in general no national comparators for TSO, which means that performance needs to be measured against international comparators. Paper III applies a benchmark model to analyse the technical efficiency of 29 European TSO. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is used to estimate efficiency scores and different approaches to account for the heterogeneity in operating environments are tested. Results show that the average technical efficiency is between 88% and 94%, depending on model and data sample. While this indicates that there are efficiency differences between the TSOs, the extension to regulation of TSOs is not straight forward since the reasons for inefficiency may be due to factors that are outside the TSO’s control. In Paper IV attention is turned towards the households’ demand for electricity. The question answered is how the ageing populations in OECD countries, and the consequential changes in population age-structures, may affect the residential demand for electricity. The implications of changing demography is analysed by a family life-cycle model, and an empirical analysis is made by specifying an econometric model of electricity demand that includes the population age-structure by four age-group variables. Results show that the oldest age-group has the largest positive effect on aggregate per capita consumption, while the other groups have lower but similar effects. The results have implications for projections of future electricity demand and for policies aimed at influencing households’ electricity demand, not the least since the share of elderly in the populations of western societies will increase by several percentage points over the coming decades.

  • Yrkesutbildning, klass & kunskap : en studie om sociala och politiska implikationer av innehållets organisering i yrkesorienterad utbildning med fokus på 2011 års gymnasiereform
  • 2013
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The overall purpose of this thesis is to critically contextualise the organization of content in Swedish upper-secondary vocational education by highlighting its social and political implications in relation to social class. Policy documents concerning the content of vocational education in Sweden from 1971 to 2011 serve as the main empirical source, with particular attention given to the reform of 2011 (Gy11). The thesis is comprised of four studies that each represents a different context that reveals social and political implications of the selection and organisation of content in Gy11. The content structure of Gy11 is thus analysed in relation to (a) the school’s role of fostering democratic citizens and the overarching societal function of education, (b) knowledge distribution among social classes, (c) a class context, including key historical and contemporary reforms, and (d) a modern historical context, focusing on how two previous structural reforms (1971 and 1994) organised power and control over educational content. The study results show that, in terms of its content structure and underlying principles, Gy11 represents a historical break with previous reforms in many respects. Fundamental organising principles of past reforms, such as students’ preparation for active citizenship, critical thinking and entry to higher education, have been given less importance while the content is more context-bound than in previous reforms. The Gy11 reform can thus be seen as a part of a broader policy trend that is detracting from earlier efforts to give all social classes equal access to an equivalent education and reduce social imbalances in education. This new way of shaping vocational education is, it is argued, likely to exacerbate class inequalities by both reducing social mobility and rendering knowledge distribution in society more asymmetric.

  • Holocene storminess dynamics in northwestern Ireland : shifts in storm duration and frequency between the mid- and late Holocene
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Quaternary Science Reviews. - : Elsevier. - 0277-3791 .- 1873-457X. ; 337
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Substantial uncertainties exist regarding how future climate change will affect storminess (storm frequency and intensity) in Ireland and the United Kingdom (UK). Knowledge about spatiotemporal variations of past storminess gives us a better understanding of its mechanisms on centennial to millennial time scales, as well as the impact of external forcing on future storminess in climate models. Here, we present the oldest storm record to date from Ireland, covering the last 8000 years, reconstructed from the Roycarter Bog, a coastal blanket bog in north-western Ireland. The sequence was analysed for grain-size, chemical, mineral and organic molecular composition. The chronology was built on 11 AMS radiocarbon dates. The deposit characteristics, location and low inorganic content suggest aeolian transport of particles to the bog throughout the studied period. Cluster analysis of the grain-size frequency curves, along with the coarse to fine sand ratio, allowed the identification of eleven storm periods (cal yr BP): 6150–5500 (1); 4970–4130 (2); 4000 (3); 3490–3290 (4); 3230 (5); 2850–2590 (6); 2170–1920 (7); 1440 (8); 1225–890 (9); 620–470 (10); and 290–230 (11).During the mid-Holocene, the relative sea level was lower and the local beach sources located further away, giving a longer transport distance compared to the late Holocene. In the latter part of the mid-Holocene (6150–4130 cal yr BP), during the Holocene thermal maximum, increased storminess and wind strengths were inferred for north-western Ireland, manifested as two longer storm periods. During the late Holocene the storm frequency increased, and a greater number (9) of shorter storm periods were recorded. Comparison between our results and regional peat palaeostorm records from Scotland, north of our study site, showed an antiphase relationship between storminess in Ireland and Scotland during the latter part of the mid-Holocene, but mostly in-phase storminess over the last 3000 years. Taken together, enhanced wind strength and storminess were recorded during the warmer mid-Holocene, while an increased frequency of storm events occurred in the cooler late Holocene. Mid-Holocene storm periods occurred during locally wet periods, while most of the storm periods during late Holocene occurred during drier phases. Alternatively, the elevated mineral input during late Holocene promoted microbial activity and peat decomposition. The apparent variability in cyclicity and frequency between the mid- and late Holocene indicates that the processes governing storminess in the region shifted. This calls for further studies ahead, including climate modelling, to disentangle the complex processes governing storminess on millennial to centennial time scale.
