  • "Att blotta vem jag är" : Släktnamnsskick och släktnamnsbyten hos samer i Sverige 1920–2009
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis is to describe surname patterns and changes of surname among the Sami of Sweden. It presents the results of three studies. The first is a survey of the present-day stock of surnames (family names) among the Sami community, based on the 2005 electoral register for the Swedish Sami Parliament. It investigates the proportions of names deriving from different languages, and the commonest names in each group. The same study was carried out for different areas, showing that the northernmost parts of Sweden have a Sami name stock significantly different from that of the majority population. Further south, the stock of names is less marked, but no area is without Sami elements. The second study, based on archival material, concerns changes of name by Swedish Sami to newly formed surnames, over the period 1920–2004. It examines not only the names adopted, but also the ones replaced; how the name stock has been affected by different patterns of name change; and, as far as possible, who the name changers were. The study shows that, for a long time, names derived from Sami and Finnish were replaced with names formed from Swedish. This may be largely because of the stigma once attached to Sami ethnicity. More recently, Sami-language names seem to have been retained to a greater extent, possibly owing to the improved status of the culture. The third study looks at name changes in favour of names marked as Sami in character. The data consist in part of archive materials, but above all of interviews with three Sami informants who have themselves adopted Sami-language surnames. This study presents the informants’ thoughts on ethnicity and changes of name.In addition to the author’s own studies, the thesis includes a review of earlier research on Sami surnames, hereditary and non-hereditary, and a list of individual surnames with literature references regarding their origins and meanings. In the thesis, name changes are studied as a single, overall process, with an emphasis on the role of names in society, in particular as ethnic markers.

  • Sweden's agricultural revolution reassessed: A reconstruction of arable land and food production in 1810 and 1870
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Agricultural History Review. - 0002-1490. ; 70:1, s. 70-95
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents the main results from the project Arable Land in Sweden. By examining some 9,400 cadastral maps, the acreages of arable land for the years 1810 and 1870 have been reconstructed. The calculations have thereafter been combined with other data in order to estimate agricultural production these years. As a result of the project, researchers have for the first time accurate data to quantify developments during the agricultural revolution. Surprisingly, Sweden had less arable land in the beginning of the nineteenth century than researchers have come to believe. Also, the acreage of arable land in 1870 must be adjusted downwards, but not as much. Land reclamation was thus faster than expected and firmly exceeded population growth. In addition, the data show that the expansion of the arable went hand-in-hand with increased productivity, surmounting the pitfalls of diminishing returns. In a concluding part, a partially new interpretation of Sweden's agricultural revolution is put forward.

  • The Database Sweden’s Agricultural Lands 1810 and 1870. A reconstruction of arable land, meadows and food production
  • 2022
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The project Arable land in Sweden 1810 and 1870 has reconstructed arable land and meadows in 1810 and 1870 at the district level for the whole of Sweden based on nearly ten thousand land surveying maps. The calculations have then been combined with reliable data to reconstruct agricultural production and consumption during these years. The data has been compiled in a database, free for researchers to use. During the 19th century, the agrarian revolution took place in Sweden. More and more land was reclaimed, new farming systems and crops were introduced and food security improved. A contemporary agricultural statistic is available from 1802 onwards, but unfortunately leave much to be desired. The historical map material enables comprehensive and significantly more reliable estimates of agricultural areas than other sources. The Land Survey in Sweden dates back to 1628 and in the following centuries, an extraordinary amount of large-scale maps were produced, covering almost every corner of the country. The processing of the map material was previously time-consuming, but by the Land Survey publishing the material online, a nationwide detailed investigation was made possible.

  • The primitive accumulation of capital in Sweden? A pilot study of boundaries in forests and wastes 1600-1900
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Historisk Tidskrift. - 0345-469X. ; 141:1, s. 27-62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The privatization of the commons has been widely discussed internationally. For Marx, the process constituted "the primitive accumulation of capital" that drove people to the factories. For Hardin, the commons were the epitome of how the lack of individual ownership results in overexploitation and collapse, the "tragedy of the commons". In Swedish rural history, however, the privatization of the commons has hardly been examined at all. This pilot study attempts an overview of the enclosure of the commons between 1600 and 1900 based on cadastral maps. The source material includes approximately 4000 maps from 423 parishes, mostly in the southern and central parts of the country. The study shows how the property formation of the commons throughout the early modern and modern era functioned as a prime mover in the country's economic modernization: during the expansion of mining in eastern and central Sweden in the 17th and 18th centuries; during the development of agriculture in the agrarian regions of western Sweden after 1750; and during the growth of the lumber industry in Northern Sweden during the second half of the 19th century. The study also establishes the dual role of the state in the process. On the one hand, the state promoted enclosures and privatization through radical legislation. On the other hand, ever since the Middle ages the state made claims of its own on common resources. On a theoretical level, the article discusses property rights and their social and economic significance. The development analysed in this study differs from Marx's classical trajectory. Enclosure in Sweden hardly pushed people away, but was rather a pull factor as a greater workforce was needed to exploit the resources of former commons. Still, we argue that the enclosures of the commons in Sweden could be understood as a primitive accumulation of capital. As dormant economic resources were freed up, opportunities in mining, forestry and agriculture grew. Just as in the English case described by Marx, rampant social polarization ensued.

  • A take-off from the land. Agriculture and social networks in the making of Kvänum as an Industrial District, 1930-2007
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Tijdschrift voor Sociale en Economische Geschidenis / The Low Countries Journal of Social and Economic History. - 1572-1701. ; 13:4, s. 119-150
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the 1930s the previously predominantly agrarian Kvänum area in Western Sweden started to industrialize. Initially most of the emerging enterprises specialized in farm machinery, especially harvest handling equipment such as straw fans, straw choppers and hot air dryers. Production later diverged into a number of branches. This article discusses the making of Kvänum as an industrial district as a multifold process of interaction between agriculture and industry. It also addresses industrialisation from the point of view of social networks. Contrasting the predominant view on the role of trust and cooperation as main engines of cluster dynamics, the results from Kvänum stresses the importance of involuntary sharing of information, under a situation of fierce, cutting edge competition.

  • From farms to firms: rural industrialisation under the “Swedish model” of organised capitalism
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Ager. Journal of Depopulation and Rural Development Studies. - 1578-7168. ; 26, s. 67-102
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How could rural communities prosper when the agricultural population was reduced to just a few percent? This study uses evidence from western Sweden to discuss rural industrialisation as a possible path of development. A paradox in occupational development is the starting point. While much of the rural population left the countryside in search of better job opportunities in the cities, many of the jobs within manufacturing were relocated from city to countryside. Scattered across rural Sweden, we find a number of small municipalities that became sites for growing industry, especially within mechanical engineering. The article argues that much of the industrial dynamism found in these regions was based on knowledge, labour, entrepreneurship and capital derived from the traditional rural structure of family farming and small-scale handicraft. One important engine was the disintegration of the older agrarian system, which freed resources previously bound to agriculture for the expansion of manufacturing. Developments are compared to the growth of industrial districts in “Third Italy” and Early Modern protoindustrialization. In the final section, rural industrialisation is discussed from an institutional perspective, in relation to the “Swedish model” of organized capitalism. It is argued that this model probably slowed the development of small-scale rural industries, supporting instead large-scale industrial concentration. However, in an institutional situation characterized by standardized central solutions, the flexible character of many rural industries actually offered an advantage – and this flexibility has been a strategic resource in the country’s industrial infrastructure.
