  • Imbibition of picoliter water droplets on coated inkjet papers
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: NIP26. - 9780892082933 ; , s. 475-478
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When an impinged inkjet droplet is impacting a paper substrate, it evaporates to the air and penetrates into the paper. The imbibition dynamics are strongly dependant on the pore structure on the surface and inside the substrate. In this work picoliter (pL) water droplets were impinged onto two commercially available matte and gloss coated paper sample. The imbibition process was recorded and analyzed using a high speed imaging system. Calcidations of the volume change were done by considering that the droplets are shaped as hemispherical caps. The total drying time of water droplets of about 60 pL is 10-15 ms on the gloss coated paper, and 30-150 ms on the matte coated paper. In addition, the two samples show different regimes in the imbibition process caused by the different porous structures present in the samples.

  • Cardiac Troponin T and Hydration Status as Prognostic Markers in Hemodialysis Patients
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Blood purification. - : S. Karger AG. - 1421-9735 .- 0253-5068. ; 40:2, s. 139-145
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aimed to assess cardiac troponin T (cTnT) and hydration state as cardiovascular (CV) risk markers in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Two hundred and forty one patients were divided according to HD vintage into two groups: SV (HD ≤24 months) and LV. Water balance was assessed with overhydration (OH%; bioimpedance analysis) and daily diuresis (DD); CV dysfunction with cTnT and heart ultrasound; nutrition with subjective global assessment (SGA), cholesterol (TC) and albumin. SV had lower OH% (2.8 vs. 3.5, p < 0.05) and higher DD (1,161 vs. 637 ml, p < 0.001), while LV had higher cTnT (0.1 ± 0.04 vs. 0.1 ± 0.07 ng/ml, p < 0.05) and lower interventricular septum thickness (IVS; 13.4 vs. 14.5 mm, p < 0.05). Nutritional state as reflected by lower TC was worse in LV (184.7 vs. 169.5 mg/dl, p < 0.05). Mortality was higher in patients in the LV group (15 vs. 27 deaths, p < 0.05). OH% correlated inversely with albumin (r = -0.36, p < 0.001), TC (r = -0.31, p < 0.001) and cTnT (r = -0.4, p < 0.001). cTnT correlated positively with IVS (r = 0.39, p < 0.001), SGA (r = 0.23, p = 0.001) and mortality rate (r = 0.21, p < 0.01), and negatively with DD (r = -0.34, p < 0.001) and albumin (r = -0.25, p < 0.001). Longer dialysis vintage associates with CV dysfunction, overhydration and increased mortality, which may be predicted with OH% and cTnT. • Characterization of human thioredoxin-like 2. A novel microtubule-binding thioredoxin expressed predominantly in the cilia of lung airway epithelium and spermatid manchette and axoneme
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Biological Chemistry. - : American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. - 0021-9258 .- 1083-351X. ; 278:15, s. 13133-13142
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We describe here the cloning and characterization of a novel member of the thioredoxin family, thioredoxin-like protein 2 (Txl-2). The Txl-2 open reading frame codes for a protein of 330 amino acids consisting of two distinct domains: an N-terminal domain typical of thioredoxins and a C-terminal domain belonging to the nucleoside-diphosphate kinase family, separated by a small interface domain. The Txl-2 gene spans approximately 28 kb, is organized into 11 exons, and maps at locus 3q22.3-q23. A splicing variant lacking exon 5 (Delta 5Txl-2) has also been isolated. By quantitative real time PCR we demonstrate that Txl-2 mRNA is ubiquitously expressed, with testis and lung having the highest levels of expression. Unexpectedly, light and electron microscopy analyses show that the protein is associated with microtubular structures such as lung airway epithelium cilia and the manchette and axoneme of spermatids. Using in vitro translated proteins, we demonstrate that full-length Txl-2 weakly associates with microtubules. In contrast, Delta 5Txl-2 specifically binds with very high affinity brain microtubule preparations containing microtubule-binding proteins. Importantly, Delta 5Txl-2 also binds to pure microtubules, proving that it possesses intrinsic microtubule binding capability. Taken together, Delta 5Txl-2 is the first thioredoxin reported to bind microtubules and might therefore be a novel regulator of microtubule physiology.

  • Inkjet printing as a possible route to study confined crystal structures
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: European Polymer Journal. - : Elsevier BV. - 0014-3057 .- 1873-1945. ; 49:1, s. 203-208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inkjet printing is a technique for the precise deposition of liquid droplets in the pL-volume range in well-defined patterns. Previous studies have shown that inkjet printing is attractive in polymer technology since it permits the controlled deposition of functional polymer surfaces. We suggest that the technique might also be useful for studying crystallization, in particular confined crystallization. Inkjet printing is a non-contact deposition method with minimal risk of contamination, which allows the exact deposition of both polymer solutions and polymer melts. This paper demonstrates the possibility of utilizing the technique to create surfaces where polymer chains form isolated small structures. These structures were confined by both the low polymer content in each droplet and the time constraint on crystal formation that arose as the result of the rapid solvent evaporation from the pL-sized droplets. In theory, inkjet printing enables the exact deposition of systems with as few as a single polymer chain in the average droplet. With appropriate instrumentation, the versatile inkjet technology can be utilized to create whole surfaces covered with polymer structures formed by the crystallization of small, dilute and rapidly evaporating droplets. 110 pL droplets of a 10 -6 g L -1 poly(ε-caprolactone) solution in 1-butanol have been deposited and studied by atomic force microscopy. Small structures of ca. 10 nm thickness and ca. 50 nm diameter also seemed to exhibit crystalline features. Some of the small structures had unusual rectangular forms whilst others were interpreted to be early precursors to six-sided single crystals previously observed for poly(ε-caprolactone). The unusual forms observed may have resulted from the entrapment of crystal structures into metastable phases, due to the limited amount of polymer material present and the rapid evaporation of the droplets.
