  • A panel of CSF proteins separates genetic frontotemporal dementia from presymptomatic mutation carriers : a GENFI study
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Molecular Neurodegeneration. - : Springer Nature. - 1750-1326. ; 16:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background A detailed understanding of the pathological processes involved in genetic frontotemporal dementia is critical in order to provide the patients with an optimal future treatment. Protein levels in CSF have the potential to reflect different pathophysiological processes in the brain. We aimed to identify and evaluate panels of CSF proteins with potential to separate symptomatic individuals from individuals without clinical symptoms (unaffected), as well as presymptomatic individuals from mutation non-carriers. Methods A multiplexed antibody-based suspension bead array was used to analyse levels of 111 proteins in CSF samples from 221 individuals from families with genetic frontotemporal dementia. The data was explored using LASSO and Random forest. Results When comparing affected individuals with unaffected individuals, 14 proteins were identified as potentially important for the separation. Among these, four were identified as most important, namely neurofilament medium polypeptide (NEFM), neuronal pentraxin 2 (NPTX2), neurosecretory protein VGF (VGF) and aquaporin 4 (AQP4). The combined profile of these four proteins successfully separated the two groups, with higher levels of NEFM and AQP4 and lower levels of NPTX2 in affected compared to unaffected individuals. VGF contributed to the models, but the levels were not significantly lower in affected individuals. Next, when comparing presymptomatic GRN and C9orf72 mutation carriers in proximity to symptom onset with mutation non-carriers, six proteins were identified with a potential to contribute to a separation, including progranulin (GRN). Conclusion In conclusion, we have identified several proteins with the combined potential to separate affected individuals from unaffected individuals, as well as proteins with potential to contribute to the separation between presymptomatic individuals and mutation non-carriers. Further studies are needed to continue the investigation of these proteins and their potential association to the pathophysiological mechanisms in genetic FTD.

  • Multi-cohort profiling reveals elevated CSF levels of brain-enriched proteins in Alzheimer's disease
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Annals of Clinical and Translational Neurology. - : Wiley. - 2328-9503. ; 8:7, s. 1456-1470
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Decreased amyloid beta (A beta) 42 together with increased tau and phospho-tau in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is indicative of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the molecular pathophysiology underlying the slowly progressive cognitive decline observed in AD is not fully understood and it is not known what other CSF biomarkers may be altered in early disease stages. Methods: We utilized an antibody-based suspension bead array to analyze levels of 216 proteins in CSF from AD patients, patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and controls from two independent cohorts collected within the AETIONOMY consortium. Two additional cohorts from Sweden were used for biological verification. Results: Six proteins, amphiphysin (AMPH), aquaporin 4 (AQP4), cAMP-regulated phosphoprotein 21 (ARPP21), growth-associated protein 43 (GAP43), neurofilament medium polypeptide (NEFM), and synuclein beta (SNCB) were found at increased levels in CSF from AD patients compared with controls. Next, we used CSF levels of A beta 42 and tau for the stratification of the MCI patients and observed increased levels of AMPH, AQP4, ARPP21, GAP43, and SNCB in the MCI subgroups with abnormal tau levels compared with controls. Further characterization revealed strong to moderate correlations between these five proteins and tau concentrations. Interpretation: In conclusion, we report six extensively replicated candidate biomarkers with the potential to reflect disease development. Continued evaluation of these proteins will determine to what extent they can aid in the discrimination of MCI patients with and without an underlying AD etiology, and if they have the potential to contribute to a better understanding of the AD continuum.

  • Antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 and risk of past or future sick leave
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Nature. - 2045-2322. ; 11:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The extent that antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 may protect against future virus-associated disease is unknown. We invited all employees (n=15,300) at work at the Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden to participate in a study examining SARS-Cov-2 antibodies in relation to registered sick leave. For consenting 12,928 healthy hospital employees antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 could be determined and compared to participant sick leave records. Subjects with viral serum antibodies were not at excess risk for future sick leave (adjusted odds ratio (OR) controlling for age and sex: 0.85 [95% confidence interval (CI) (0.85 (0.43-1.68)]. By contrast, subjects with antibodies had an excess risk for sick leave in the weeks prior to testing [adjusted OR in multivariate analysis: 3.34 (2.98-3.74)]. Thus, presence of viral antibodies marks past disease and protection against excess risk of future disease. Knowledge of whether exposed subjects have had disease in the past or are at risk for future disease is essential for planning of control measures.Trial registration: First registered on 02/06/20, ClinicalTrials.gov NCT04411576.

  • Between Waste and Resource : Enacting Sewage Sludge as Useable Good
  • 2024
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In many countries, policymakers, researchers and other stakeholders have advocated that using materials previously regarded as waste as an important step towards a more sustainable future. The issue, however, is that using waste is not easy in practice. Concerns regarding safety, cleanliness, profitability, and quality are frequently raised. My focus is on Swedish sewage sludge use in agriculture, a practice which went from six percent of the total amount sewage sludge produced to 46 percent between 2002 and 2020. The main guiding question is how actors like researchers, farmer federations, industrial organizations, wastewater treatment plant operators, and public agency representatives negotiate what sewage sludge is and how it should be used. The study contributes to the emerging literature on resourcification, a theoretical approach which understands that resources become through practice. I also draw on concepts from multiple ontology research to demonstrate how complex materials like sewage sludge become a matter of political contestation. The study is based on researchers’ arguments published in scientific papers over the past fifty years, Swedish stakeholders’ opinion statements to four governmental inquiries over the past twenty years, minutes from a wastewater treatment certification organization (Revaq) from 2011 to 2022, and interviews with the expert panel initiated by the 2018 governmental sewage sludge inquiry. Analytically, I focus on how sewage sludge is related to other objects and phenomena and by that enacting what the sludge should be. I argue that farmers, wastewater treatment plant operators, researchers, and recycling companies have enacted sewage sludge as a fertilizer, partially through the establishment of a certificate. In the Swedish agricultural sector, sewage sludge has now become a usable good. This enactment, however, requires constant support to fend off the challenges presented by other ways of enacting what sewage sludge is and should become.

  • Becoming-a-firefighter : on the intra-active relationship between firefighters and their tools
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Norma. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1890-2138 .- 1890-2146. ; 11:3, s. 158-173
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article focuses on the relationship between the members of a local fire brigade in Sweden and their tools, as well as the organisational dynamics that forge this relation. Drawing on the work of Karen Barad [2007. Meeting the universe halfway. Quantum physics and the entanglement of matter and meaning. Durham: Duke University Press], and particularly her notion of intra-action, the intention is to unpick the strong material and symbolic relationship between men, masculinity and tools seen in this profession. While Barad’s work has been useful within feminist theories, few attempts have been made to investigate how her work can benefit critical studies of men and masculinities, one exception being Ulf Mellström [2016. From a hegemonic politics of masculinity to an ontological politics of intimacy and vulnerability? Ways of imagining through Karen Barad's work. Rhizomes, 30. Retrieved from http://www.rhizomes.net/issue30/mellstrom.html] who explores how intimacy may be productive in developing more nuanced understandings of masculinities. Inspired by this approach, this article explores how using Barad’s notion of intra-action as an analytical tool can facilitate a deeper exploration of men’s intimate relationships with technologies. The intra-action between the members of the local fire brigade and their firefighting tools is not a one-off encounter, but takes place continuously. Hence, while a tool – in a specific situation – becomes an integral part of the body and the identity of a group of people, it requires constant maintenance in order to accomplish successful fire extinctions.

  • Robust humoral and cellular immune responses and low risk for reinfection at least 8 months following asymptomatic to mild COVID-19
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Internal Medicine. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0954-6820 .- 1365-2796. ; 291:1, s. 72-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Emerging data support detectable immune responses for months after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and vaccination, but it is not yet established to what degree and for how long protection against reinfection lasts. Methods: We investigated SARS-CoV-2-specific humoral and cellular immune responses more than 8 months post-asymptomatic, mild and severe infection in a cohort of 1884 healthcare workers (HCW) and 51 hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Possible protection against SARS-CoV-2 reinfection was analyzed by a weekly 3-month polymerase chain reaction (PCR) screening of 252 HCW that had seroconverted 7 months prior to start of screening and 48 HCW that had remained seronegative at multiple time points. Results: All COVID-19 patients and 96% (355/370) of HCW who were anti-spike IgG positive at inclusion remained anti-spike IgG positive at the 8-month follow-up. Circulating SARS-CoV-2-specific memory T cell responses were detected in 88% (45/51) of COVID-19 patients and in 63% (233/370) of seropositive HCW. The cumulative incidence of PCR-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection was 1% (3/252) among anti-spike IgG positive HCW (0.13 cases per 100 weeks at risk) compared to 23% (11/48) among anti-spike IgG negative HCW (2.78 cases per 100 weeks at risk), resulting in a protective effect of 95.2% (95% CI 81.9%-99.1%).Conclusions: The vast majority of anti-spike IgG positive individuals remain anti-spike IgG positive for at least 8 months regardless of initial COVID-19 disease severity. The presence of anti-spike IgG antibodies is associated with a substantially reduced risk of reinfection up to 9 months following asymptomatic to mild COVID-19.

  • SARS-CoV-2 induces a durable and antigen specific humoral immunity after asymptomatic to mild COVID-19 infection
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 17:1, s. e0262169-e0262169
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Current SARS-CoV-2 serological assays generate discrepant results, and the longitudinal characteristics of antibodies targeting various antigens after asymptomatic to mild COVID-19 are yet to be established. This longitudinal cohort study including 1965 healthcare workers, of which 381 participants exhibited antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 spike antigen at study inclusion, reveal that these antibodies remain detectable in most participants, 96%, at least four months post infection, despite having had no or mild symptoms. Virus neutralization capacity was confirmed by microneutralization assay in 91% of study participants at least four months post infection. Contrary to antibodies targeting the spike protein, antibodies against the nucleocapsid protein were only detected in 80% of previously anti-nucleocapsid IgG positive healthcare workers. Both anti-spike and anti-nucleocapsid IgG levels were significantly higher in previously hospitalized COVID-19 patients four months post infection than in healthcare workers four months post infection (p = 2*10−23 and 2*10−13 respectively). Although the magnitude of humoral response was associated with disease severity, our findings support a durable and functional humoral response after SARS-CoV-2 infection even after no or mild symptoms. We further demonstrate differences in antibody kinetics depending on the antigen, arguing against the use of the nucleocapsid protein as target antigen in population-based SARS-CoV-2 serological surveys

  • Systematic evaluation of SARS-CoV-2 antigens enables a highly specific and sensitive multiplex serological COVID-19 assay
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Clinical & Translational Immunology. - : Wiley. - 2050-0068. ; 10:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective. The COVID-19 pandemic poses an immense need for accurate, sensitive and high-throughput clinical tests, and serological assays are needed for both overarching epidemiological studies and evaluating vaccines. Here, we present the development and validation of a high-throughput multiplex bead-based serological assay. Methods. More than 100 representations of SARS-CoV-2 proteins were included for initial evaluation, including antigens produced in bacterial and mammalian hosts as well as synthetic peptides. The five best-performing antigens, three representing the spike glycoprotein and two representing the nucleocapsid protein, were further evaluated for detection of IgG antibodies in samples from 331 COVID-19 patients and convalescents, and in 2090 negative controls sampled before 2020. Results. Three antigens were finally selected, represented by a soluble trimeric form and the S1-domain of the spike glycoprotein as well as by the C-terminal domain of the nucleocapsid. The sensitivity for these three antigens individually was found to be 99.7%, 99.1% and 99.7%, and the specificity was found to be 98.1%, 98.7% and 95.7%. The best assay performance was although achieved when utilising two antigens in combination, enabling a sensitivity of up to 99.7% combined with a specificity of 100%. Requiring any two of the three antigens resulted in a sensitivity of 99.7% and a specificity of 99.4%. Conclusion. These observations demonstrate that a serological test based on a combination of several SARS-CoV-2 antigens enables a highly specific and sensitive multiplex serological COVID-19 assay.

  • Cell-specific nitrogen- and carbon-fixation of cyanobacteria in a temperate marine system (Baltic Sea)
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Environmental Microbiology. - : Wiley. - 1462-2912 .- 1462-2920 .- 1758-2229. ; 18:12, s. 4596-4609
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We analysed N2- and carbon (C) fixation in individual cells of Baltic Sea cyanobacteria by combining stable isotope incubations with secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). Specific growth rates based on N2- and C-fixation were higher for cells of Dolichospermum spp. than for Aphanizomenon sp. and Nodularia spumigena. The cyanobacterial biomass, however, was dominated by Aphanizomenon sp., which contributed most to total N2-fixation in surface waters of the Northern Baltic Proper. N2-fixation by Pseudanabaena sp. and colonial picocyanobacteria was not detectable. N2-fixation by Aphanizomenon sp., Dolichospermum spp. and N. spumigena populations summed up to total N2-fixation, thus these genera appeared as sole diazotrophs within the Baltic Sea's euphotic zone, while their mean contribution to total C-fixation was 21%. Intriguingly, cell-specific N2-fixation was 8-fold higher at a coastal station compared to an offshore station, revealing coastal zones as habitats with substantial N2-fixation. At the coastal station, the cell-specific C- to N2-fixation ratio was below the cellular C:N ratio, i.e., N2 was assimilated in excess to C-fixation, whereas the C- to N2-fixation ratio exceeded the C:N ratio in offshore sampled diazotrophs. Our findings highlight SIMS as a powerful tool not only for qualitative but also for quantitative N2-fixation assays in aquatic environments.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this introduction we provide an overview of research on gender issues in the rescue services in combination with introducing the different contributions in this book. The overview is primarily concerned with three national contexts; the U.S., the U.K. and Sweden, and we focus on the most prevalent themes in the literature as well as pointing out under-researched areas. The empirical contributions in this volume draw on empirical work from Sweden, the U.K. and Denmark. Our aim in this book is to show how the rescue services constitutes a fertile ground for epistemological and methodological concerns in contemporary gender studies, including feminist theory, masculinity and sexuality studies. We also believe that the critical perspective offered by interdisciplinary gender studies can provide new perspectives on emergency work and crisis management in a broader sense. As this area of research is still in an early stage, and this book is (to our knowledge) the first collected volume dealing with gender and rescue services, we also want to introduce prevalent themes in the academic literature as well as pointing out neglected areas.

  • Altered perivascular fibroblast activity precedes ALS disease onset
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature Medicine. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 1078-8956 .- 1546-170X. ; 27:4, s. 640-646
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Apart from well-defined factors in neuronal cells1, only a few reports consider that the variability of sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) progression can depend on less-defined contributions from glia2,3 and blood vessels4. In this study we use an expression-weighted cell-type enrichment method to infer cell activity in spinal cord samples from patients with sporadic ALS and mouse models of this disease. Here we report that patients with sporadic ALS present cell activity patterns consistent with two mouse models in which enrichments of vascular cell genes preceded microglial response. Notably, during the presymptomatic stage, perivascular fibroblast cells showed the strongest gene enrichments, and their marker proteins SPP1 and COL6A1 accumulated in enlarged perivascular spaces in patients with sporadic ALS. Moreover, in plasma of 574 patients with ALS from four independent cohorts, increased levels of SPP1 at disease diagnosis repeatedly predicted shorter survival with stronger effect than the established risk factors of bulbar onset or neurofilament levels in cerebrospinal fluid. We propose that the activity of the recently discovered perivascular fibroblast can predict survival of patients with ALS and provide a new conceptual framework to re-evaluate definitions of ALS etiology.

  • A computer is a screen, is a cell phone, is plastics, is a microwave, is a copper coil… : On the fluidity of electronic waste
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Wi: Journal of Mobile Media. - 1918-2104. ; 10:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Informed by previous studies that employ Actor Network-Theory (ANT), this article discusses electronic waste (e-waste) as fluid objects. The concept of ‘fluidity’ or ‘fluid’ includes an object’s ability to flow and thereby change shape, and therefore obstructs any attempt to explain e-waste in terms of a single state of being. Traditionally, fluidity has been used as a means to capture the changing characters of objects while they are being used. Elaborating on the notion of fluidity or the fluid in relation to e-waste serves both to expand previous understandings of fluidity to also encompass the status of objects as they are discarded, and to challenge traditional understandings of e-waste as the end point in the object’s lifecycle.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Men's Studies. - : Men's Studies Press, LLC. - 1060-8265 .- 1933-0251. ; 17:2, s. 129-144
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines the tragic accidents that occurred in Montana and in Colorado where a total of 27 fire fighters lost their lives. While the encompassing interest concerns men operating in male dominated working sites and how homosociality is contingent on artifactual utility, the article specifically discloses the organizational dynamics found among the perished fire fighters and the homosocial practices that may have contributed to the tragic outcomes of these disasters. Not only does homosociality embrace dominance, competitive activities and friendship; it also includes material aspects, which is why the study allocates an understanding of the intimacy between artifacts and performances of masculinity. A theoretical aim of this study advocates collaborative practices between masculinity studies and actor-network theory (ANT). In order to disclose how materiality fosters demonstrations of masculinity and homosocial performances, this article draws on the previously mentioned disasters in the U.S. Additionally interviews with retired fire fighters in a Swedish town provide supplementary sources of information.

  • Ingår i: Studies in Media and Communication. - : Redfame Publishing. - 2325-8071 .- 2325-808X. ; 3:1, s. 11-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article offers a speculative reading on the linkage between Swedish popular media representations of digital technologies and peoples’ stockpiling behavior. The hypothesis is that Swedish popular media representations of digital technologies contribute to fuelling an understanding of these technologies as resource-free, consumable goods, and that this in turn might affect peoples’ tendencies to stockpile obsolete digital technologies in their homes. Previous studies have shown that stockpiling of obsolete electrical and electronic equipment is a common phenomenon in many countries (see for comparison Grossman, 2006; Saphores et al., 2006, 2009; Lescak, 2008; Gabrys, 2011). At the same time, little light is shed on why people stockpile obsolete electrical and electronic equipment in their homes. This article focuses particularly on digital technologies such as computers, televisions, smart phones, cell phones, laptops and tablets. Digital technologies are interesting as they account for a large – and increasing – amount of electrical and electronic equipment. Looking at the ways in which Swedish popular media represent digital technologies, this article suggests that popular media representations of digital technologies matter, not only in the ways people imagine and use digital technologies, but also the ways in which we think (or choose not to think) about their afterlife. The hypothesis is that the ways in which Swedish popular media represent digital technologies obstruct environmentally sound disposal and reuse options, something that in turn serves to cement and/or reinforce contemporary consumption behaviors and the environmental impacts that follow. By this, this article provides additional insights into what appears to be a western tendency to store obsolete electrical and electronic equipment at home.

  • Ingår i: Methods in Molecular Biology. - New York, NY : Springer Nature. - 1064-3745 .- 1940-6029. ; 2628, s. 535-553
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The detection of antibody responses using serological tests provides means to diagnose infections, follow disease transmission, and monitor vaccination responses. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, highlighted the need for rapid development of robust and reliable serological tests to follow disease spreading. Moreover, the rise of SARS-CoV-2 variants emphasized the need to monitor their transmission and prevalence in the population. For this reason, multiplex and flexible serological assays are needed to allow for rapid inclusion of antigens representing new variants as soon as they appear. In this chapter, we describe the generation and application of a multiplex serological test, based on bead array technology, to detect anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in a high-throughput manner, using only a few microliters of sample. This method is currently expanding to include a multi-disease antigen panel that will allow parallel detection of antibodies towards several infectious agents.

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Norma. - 1890-2138 .- 1890-2146. ; 6:1, s. 5-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article is based on an ethnographic account of an association of retired fire fighters in the northern parts of Sweden. The intention is to outline how acts of storytelling and commemoration are paramount to aging in that they give a rite of passage to a particular process of aging. By this I suggest that my informants engaged in acts of commemoration in order to conflate age with experience. Investigating the interconnection between the aged fire fighters, their joint practices of storytelling and their preferences for certain tools rather than others this article proposes a revivified understanding of how the profession as a fire fighter is open to continuous modifications. The relation between different generations of fire fighters, as expressed in many of the joint narrations, showed that their exercises were masculinized and de-masculinized in tandem with the employment of professional tools. Scrutiny of the technological changes subsequently discloses a generational shift, which in turn encourages certain exercises whilst dismissing others. As the undertakings of a fire fighter rely on the instrumental utility the technological shifts contribute to fortifying differences between the age groups of the fire fighters.

  • Degrees of freedom? : disclosing rendering processes of virtual bodies
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: MMWW08. - Madrid : Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • One of the challenges when designing and programming generic characters populating different virtual environments (VE) is to improve the realism of the animation (cf. Magnenat-Thalmann & Thalmann 1990:77; Musse & Thalmann 2001:152,154). Thus, designers and programmers seem to endeavour for synthetic actors to adopt "real" body movements and "realistic" embodied behaviour. Nonetheless, employing parameters of "realism" as points of departures tends to naturalize certain movements and behaviours as they turns into self-evident actions for how generic virtual characters are developed.

  • Electronic waste—a modern form of risk? : On the consequences of the delay between the increasing generation of electronic waste and regulations to manage this increase
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Human and Ecological Risk Assessment. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1080-7039 .- 1549-7860. ; 23:6, s. 1272-1284
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article addresses the relation between the current proliferation of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) goods and services and the development of different kinds of risk assessments and policy documents. The ambition is to shed light on a, hithertho, less-discussed aspect of the development of risk assessments and policy documents, namely the time span between the development of new technologies and the development of regulatory frameworks. The concept of risk and danger can be seen as a potential means through which we can start to think about the consequences of the delay between the increased generation of electronic waste (e-waste) and the regulations to manage this increase. By using e-waste as a case study, this article provides the basis for a more general understanding of the relation between the development of new technologies and the development of regulatory frameworks. While it might be difficult to pin down the effects that this delay had/has for the subsequent development of ICTs, this article highlights the importance of taking into account not only how and by whom risk assessments and policy documents are developed, but also when they are developed in relation to the technologies that they serve to regulate.

  • For the sake of love : the importance of being an amateur
  • 2007
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • There is nothing natural or given in men’s passionate relationship with technology(Oldenziel 1999:10). My aim with this paper is to investigate the merits in Ruth Oldenziels expression; men’s love affair with technology (Oldenziel 1999:9; Kleif & Faulkner 2003:296). By scrutinizing the very pleasure and devotion, and in the enhancement the recognition of professionals and amateurs, I claim that Technology (as well as masculinity) is a narrative production of our own times (ibid 1999:190). Further, the relationship between men and technology is not strictly one-sided. It is indeed founded in power as well as in pleasure (Mellström 2003:19). Pleasure is, as Hacker suggests, also about dominance and control (Hacker 1989:8,47). Looking upon Kleif´s and Faulkner’s article (2003), women seem to be distanced from technological devices, looking upon their work strictly as a profession. Here, reflections also easily end, with men and women, neatly separated and cemented in their gender roles. To follow this dilemma further I nevertheless suggest a shifted focus. For how can amateurness be understood? The very word amateur comes from Latin were it translates to lover (1). Hence, depicting men’s love affair with technology as a sign of amateurness and as acts for the sake of love is crucial in men’s love affair with technology. I’m emphasizing the amateurizing of women, hoping that many of them, in this regard, never become professionals!(1) I was introduced to the understanding of amateurs as lovers at a conference held at the UCI in August 2007. SECT, Seminar in Experimental Critical Theory discussed critical aspects of ICT.

  • Gender, class and altered soundscapes : Following the implementation of a robotic welding system
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Ethnography. - : SAGE Publications. - 1466-1381 .- 1741-2714. ; 19:3, s. 379-395
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores some of the ways in which gender and class emerge in relation to the altered soundscape that follows technological change. As such, it takes seriously not only practices of noisemaking and disruptive sounds, but also the implication of silence and different modes of listening. The findings call for an enhanced understanding of the ephemeral qualities of sound, as well as the subsequent listening practices, and how these factors contribute, both to enforce and challenge the ways in which gender and class are enacted. This paper also adds to the discipline of ethnography, the importance for an ethnographer of acknowledging production of sound as well as subsequent listening practices as part of meaning-making practices.

  • ‘It is all about getting the volumes down’ : Organizational framings of risk in relation to waste, waste management and temporality
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Risk Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1366-9877 .- 1466-4461. ; 23:2, s. 181-193
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Drawing on an ethnographic fieldwork at a waste facility site in the northern parts of Sweden, this article investigates organizational framings of risk (Hutter and Power 2005) in relation to waste and practices of waste management, employing the concept of temporality. The suggestion is that organizational framings of risk, as it contributes to steering the risk perception of the employees, also cater to a particular temporal register. In relation to the purposes of this article, the risks that my informants mentioned and/or perceived–as part of a particular organizational framework–were most often seen in terms of situated inconveniences and hazards that required technical, and logistic solutions. While this enabled them to take action, it also contributed to bounding risk and risk perception to a particular temporal register, intimately linked to what Barbara Adam (1998) refers to as the logics of industrial time. The logics of industrial time also suffuse formulations of current environmental policies and waste management plans, on a national as well as on an EU level where waste is seen primarily as a resource that continuously needs to be invented anew. As such, the logics of industrial time follow closely the beat of market fluctuations. Talking to representatives for the current waste facility site and observing some of their daily activities, potential risks with waste and practices of waste management were often weighed against other factors such as effectiveness, swiftness, and economic profits or losses: factors that also corresponded to short-time temporalities. While this reasoning, at first seemed to outperform any notion of risk, it actually conformed to the risks acknowledged by the organizational setting of which my informants were part.

  • Leakage : being a risk object or an object at risk? Investigating potential synergies between gender studies and discard studies through the concept of risk
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Gender Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0958-9236 .- 1465-3869. ; 32:2, s. 144-152
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article employs the concept of risk to explore potential synergies and points of contact between gender studies and discard studies. In doing so, the focus is on the risk of leakage, such as pollution, toxic discharges, urine leakage and menstruation. Leakage is of interest to scholars, both within gender studies and discard studies as it concerns the (female) body as well as pollutants seeping into the environment. Applying the concept of risk, it is suggested that discard studies add to gender studies an understanding of the ways in which bodies and environment mutually enfold one another in and through leakages while it is also evident that these enfoldings are far from symbiotic and harmonious. In addition, discard studies' focus on leakage as at once troublesome and mundane brings to the discussion an understanding of the risk of leakage as it is managed on a daily basis. From the perspective of gender studies, we learn that bodily leakages are commonly framed as an individual matter. Hence, gender studies' contribution to discard studies lies in its ability to assign responsibility to humans for environmental leakages and spills, rather than viewing them as passive victims.

  • Mass movements in computer-mediated environments. : An account on crowds as socio-material densities.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Information, Communication and Society. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1369-118X .- 1468-4462. ; 13:5, s. 765-784
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Human crowds and embodied densities assume important parts in everyday life. In as much as we constitute different formations – demonstrations, traffic jams and concerts – cinematic productions, computer games and other virtual settings invite us to observe mass movements. Unfortunately, the spatial implication of crowds has not been subjected to contemporary academic research. Critical accounts of digitalization techniques and computer-mediated environments have likewise sidestepped further discussions; meticulous attention has been directed to the roles of gender and embodiment in relation to computer-mediated environments, but further scrutiny on mass movements and their entanglement with space largely lies fallow. Computer-mediated inhabitation of space contributes to reconceptualizing, not only the very notion of spatial constraints, but also earlier crowd theories, which admittedly serves to bring forth novel tenets. Scrutiny of the latter reveals a discipline, to a large extent produced according to, and in tandem with, male Western values, which have implicitly subjugated alternative aspects. At the same time, and in line with one of the premises of the iCS Key Thinkers series, this article argues that there is a range of thinkers and theoretical traditions that have a lot to offer theory and research into issues about newer media and information and communication technologies (http://www.tandf.co.uk/-journals/cfp/ricscfp.pdf 2009-12-17). Saying this, the article engages with crowds and how mass formations are enacted and articulated in computer-mediated settings. At the same time, it constitutes a research summary of earlier crowd theories. The intention is to enmesh traditional inquiries within crowd theories with a theoretical bedrock of cybercultural studies and feminist theories. In doing so, new light will confidently be shed upon the crowd as a socio-material density.
