  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Humanity has emerged as a major force in the operation of the biosphere, with a significant imprint on the Earth System, challenging social-ecological resilience. This new situation calls for a fundamental shift in perspectives, world views, and institutions. Human development and progress must be reconnected to the capacity of the biosphere and essential ecosystem services to be sustained. Governance challenges include a highly interconnected and faster world, cascading social-ecological interactions and planetary boundaries that create vulnerabilities but also opportunities for social-ecological change and transformation. Tipping points and thresholds highlight the importance of understanding and managing resilience. New modes of flexible governance are emerging. A central challenge is to reconnect these efforts to the changing preconditions for societal development as active stewards of the Earth System. We suggest that the Millennium Development Goals need to be reframed in such a planetary stewardship context combined with a call for a new social contract on global sustainability. The ongoing mind shift in human relations with Earth and its boundaries provides exciting opportunities for societal development in collaboration with the biosphere-a global sustainability agenda for humanity.

  • Litteraturens historia i Sverige
  • 2013. - 7

  • Integration of Transcriptomics and Antibody-Based Proteomics for Exploration of Proteins Expressed in Specialized Tissues
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Proteome Research. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1535-3893 .- 1535-3907. ; 17:12, s. 4127-4137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A large portion of human proteins are referred to as missing proteins, defined as protein-coding genes that lack experimental data on the protein level due to factors such as temporal expression, expression in tissues that are difficult to sample, or they actually do not encode functional proteins. In the present investigation, an integrated omics approach was used for identification and exploration of missing proteins. Transcriptomics data from three different sourcesthe Human Protein Atlas (HPA), the GTEx consortium, and the FANTOM5 consortiumwere used as a starting point to identify genes selectively expressed in specialized tissues. Complementing the analysis with profiling on more specific tissues based on immunohistochemistry allowed for further exploration of cell-type-specific expression patterns. More detailed tissue profiling was performed for >300 genes on complementing tissues. The analysis identified tissue-specific expression of nine proteins previously listed as missing proteins (POU4F1, FRMD1, ARHGEF33, GABRG1, KRTAP2-1, BHLHE22, SPRR4, AVPR1B, and DCLK3), as well as numerous proteins with evidence of existence on the protein level that previously lacked information on spatial resolution and cell-type- specific expression pattern. We here present a comprehensive strategy for identification of missing proteins by combining transcriptomics with antibody-based proteomics. The analyzed proteins provide interesting targets for organ-specific research in health and disease.

  • The Swedish green infrastructure policy as a policy assemblage : What does it do for biodiversity conservation?
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: People and Nature. - : Wiley. - 2575-8314. ; 5:2, s. 839-851
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Green infrastructure (GI) is increasingly used in policymaking to promote biodiversity and enhance ecosystem services through the protection, creation, restoration and connection of natural and man-made green areas. The EU Commission adopted in 2013, the concept as a strategy. When member states apply the policy, it is translated into specific bureaucratic and political systems, creating different ‘policy assemblages’ of ideas and institutional features. We analyse the Swedish GI policy to draw conclusions about how it has been assembled in one particular member state and what that particular assemblage will imply for biodiversity conservation. In combination with understanding policies as assemblages, we use the ‘What's the problem represented to be’-approach as method. We show that the Swedish GI policy assemblage consists of a mix of policy ideas developed in Sweden and the EU. Despite the current strong focus on biodiversity conservation, the notion of land's multifunctionality, characterizing the EU strategy and the possibility to conserve biodiversity on land used for purposes other than conservation increasingly influence the Swedish policy as it is formed. Although the policy has the potential to mainstream biodiversity conservation measures across different sectors, based on our analysis of current discourse, its implementation will likely promote GI measures less disruptive to existing land use activities, making its capacity to halt biodiversity loss marginal. • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physics in Medicine and Biology. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 0031-9155 .- 1361-6560. ; 57:8, s. 2209-2217
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to investigate signal fading in lithium formate electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) dosimeters used for clinical applications in radiotherapy. A new experimental method for determination of signal fading, designed to resolve small changes in signal from slowly decaying unstable radicals, was used. Possible signal fading in lithium formate due to different storage temperatures was also tested. Air humidity was kept at a constant level of 33% throughout the experiments. The conclusion drawn from the investigations was that the EPR signal from lithium formate is stable during at least 1 month after irradiation and is not sensitive to variations in storage temperature andlt;40 degrees C when kept at a relative air humidity of 33%. This makes lithium formate a suitable dosimeter for transfer dosimetry in clinical audits.

  • Lithium formate EPR dosimetry for accurate measurements of absorbed dose in radiotherapy
  • 2014
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Lithium formate has shown to be a material with properties suitable for electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) dosimetry, among them up to 7 times higher sensitivity compared to alanine, which is a well-established EPR detector material for dose determinations in radiotherapy. The aim of this thesis was to further investigate the properties of lithium formate and develop the dosimetry system towards applications in radiotherapy. The intrinsic efficiency for energies of relevance to brachytherapy and the signal stability were investigated. The dosimetry system was expanded to include a smaller dosimeter model, suitable for measurements in dose gradient regions. An individual sensitivity correction method was applied to the smaller dosimeters to be able to perform dose determinations with the same precision as for the larger ones. EPR dosimetry in general is time consuming and effort was spent to optimize the signal readout procedure regarding measurement time and measurement precision. The system was applied in two clinical applications chosen for their high demands on the dosimetry system: 1) a dosimetry audit for external photon beam therapy and 2) dose verification measurements around a low energy HDR brachytherapy source. The conclusions drawn from this thesis were: dose determinations can be performed with a standard uncertainty of 1.8-2.5% using both the original size dosimeters and the new developed smaller ones. The dosimetry system is robust and useful for applications when high measurement precision and accuracy is prioritized. It is a good candidate for dosimetry audits, both in external beam therapy and brachytherapy.

  • Mapping the governance complex of land use policies for compensation
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Ecological compensation is the latest member of a growing family of concepts aimed at reducing degradation of environmental quality. This and other concepts of the family – like ecosystem services, green infrastructure, and nature-based solutions – have been subject to a range of different interpretations and subsequent implementation practices. The result is a complex governance system with unclear boundaries and implications for the management efforts of environmental quality. In this paper, we seek to map and disentangle this complexity – with a particular focus on ecological compensation and related concepts (such as biodiversity offsetting and no net loss), which all have gained momentum in recent years and which share the notion that intrusion in nature should be compensated in one way or the other. In a first step, we seek to map similarities, differences and overlaps, between the concepts, by using a set of analytical categories including: the origin of the concept (scientific or policy context), the aim of its application, the type of decision-making process it generates, its relation to urban or rural contexts, and the extent to which it has been subjected to regulation. In a second step, and as a result of this mapping, we will advance knowledge about how governments, municipalities and business actors in different ways work with environmental quality, ecosystem services and biodiversity. First, we draw conclusions about the degree to which the concepts under scrutiny are mutually reinforcing or competing. Second, our analysis enables conclusions about why some concepts are preferred in certain institutional contexts and what institutional preconditions are needed for their use. Third, we discuss possible implications of this governance complexity for questions of effectiveness and legitimacy.

  • Anal sphincter lacerations and upright delivery postures - a risk analysis from a randomized controlled trial
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Urogynecology Journal. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0937-3462 .- 1433-3023. ; 18:2, s. 141-146
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To evaluate obstetric sphincter lacerations after a kneeling or sitting position at second stage of labor in a multivariate risk analysis model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred and seventy-one primiparous women with normal pregnancies and spontaneous labor were randomized, 138 to a kneeling position and 133 to a sitting position. Medical data were retrieved from delivery charts and partograms. Risk factors were tested in a multivariate logistic regression model in a stepwise manner. RESULTS: The trial was completed by 106 subjects in the kneeling group and 112 subjects in the sitting group. There were no significant differences with regard to duration of second stage of labor or pre-trial maternal characteristics between the two groups. Obstetrical sphincter tears did not differ significantly between the two groups but an intact perineum was more common in the kneeling group (p<0.03) and episiotomy (mediolateral) was more common in the sitting group (p<0.05). Three grade IV sphincter lacerations occurred in the sitting group compared to none in the kneeling group (NS). Multivariate risk analysis indicated that prolonged duration of second stage of labor and episiotomy were associated with an increased risk of third- or fourth-degree sphincter tears (p<0.01 and p<0.05, respectively). Delivery posture, maternal age, fetal weight, use of oxytocin, and use of epidural analgesia did not increase the risk of obstetrical anal sphincter lacerations in the two upright postures. CONCLUSION: Obstetrical anal sphincter lacerations did not differ significantly between a kneeling or sitting upright delivery posture. Episiotomy was more common after a sitting delivery posture, which may be associated with an increased risk of anal sphincter lacerations. Upright delivery postures may be encouraged in healthy women with normal, full-term pregnancy.

  • “It’s about how you take in things with your brain” - young people’s perspectives on mental health and help seeking : an interview study
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: BMC Public Health. - : BioMed Central (BMC). - 1471-2458. ; 24:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: Poor mental health in young people has become a growing problem globally over the past decades. However, young people have also been shown to underutilize available healthcare resources. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has formulated guidelines for youth-friendly health services (YFHSs) to increase youth participation in healthcare. Still, little is known about how young people using these services perceive mental health, indicating a knowledge gap concerning the subjective evaluation of their mental health.Aim: To investigate how young people visiting youth health clinics (YHC) perceive the concept of mental health and factors they view as central to maintaining mental health. Methods: In total 21 interviews were carried out, 16 in 2018, and 5 in 2023 to assure no changes in findings after the COVID-19 pandemic. Subjects were recruited during visits to youth health clinics (YHCs) in mid-Sweden and were aged 15–23 years. Recruitment strived to achieve heterogeneity in the sample concerning gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and age. Interviews were transcribed and analysed using qualitative content analysis.Findings: Findings of the analysis revealed two themes, “Mental health is helped and hindered by the surroundings” and “Mental health is difficult to understand and difficult to achieve”. The participants described their health as highly dependent on their social surroundings, and that these are important to maintaining health but may also affect health negatively. They described mixed experiences of the health care services and mentioned prerequisites for seeking care for mental health problems such as accessibility and respect for their integrity, including the right to turn down offered treatment. The informants also viewed mental health as an ongoing undertaking that one must work for, and that it is sometimes difficult to know what constitutes mental health. They also expressed a need from healthcare services to enquire about their health, and to show an active interest in how they are doing. Conclusions: Findings underline the need of young people’s individual needs to be met in the healthcare system and their vulnerability to their social surroundings. Health status assessments in young people should consider social and individual factors to fully capture mental health.

  • Effects on serum protein levels from one bout of high intensity interval training in individuals with axial spondyloarthritis and controls
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background: Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is a chronic inflammatory disease primarily affecting the axial skeleton causing pain, inflammation, and stiffness. Individuals with axSpA are at greater risk of developing cardiovascular disease, which can be counteracted by physical activity. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has been shown to improve cardiovascular health, but the effect on disease activity and the level of inflammation in axSpA has been less studied. With the aim of investigating how levels of inflammatory cytokines, myokines, and protein markers for bone metabolism are acutely affected by one bout of HIIT, we studied serum from individuals with axSpA and healthy controls (HC).Methods: Ten participants with axSpA and 11 age- and sex-matched HC performed a single HIIT bout on a cycle ergometer: 4x4 minutes intervals with three minutes active rest in between. Blood samples were taken before and one hour after the HIIT bout. Serum proteins (IL-6, IL-17, IL-18, TNFa, CXCL-10, VEGF-A, BDNF, DKK-1, osteoprotegerin, osteocalcin, osteopontin, BMP-7, CRP) were analyzed with a Luminex system or ELISA. Descriptive data are presented as mean with standard deviation. A two-way ANOVA was used for comparisons. Results: A main effect from baseline to one hour post HIIT showed that both groups had a significant increase in serum levels (pg/ml) of IL-6: axSpA 2.2 (3.0) to 3.2 (1.8) and HC 0.4 (0.4) to 1.9 (2.0), p=0.03. VEGF-A (pg/ml) was significantly lower in the axSpA group: 159 (138) vs. HC 326 (184), p=0.03, but was not affected by the HIIT bout. BMP-7 (ng/ml) increased in both groups after the HIIT: axSpA 61.6 (13.1) to 75.2 (20.0) and HC 64.6 (20.8 to 75.0 (17.8), p<0.001. For the other proteins analyzed, there were no significant differences in serum concentrations between individuals with axSpA and HC, or within the two groups before and after one bout of HIIT.Conclusions: One acute bout of HIIT significantly increases the serum concentrations of IL-6 and BMP-7 after 1 hour in both individuals with axSpA and HC.© Research Square 2024

  • Serum Protein Response To A Single High-Intensity Interval Training Bout – Comparison Between Individuals With Spondyloarthritis And Healthy Controls
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases. - London : BMJ Publishing Group Ltd. - 0003-4967 .- 1468-2060. ; 81:Suppl 1, s. 780-781
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting mainly the axial skeleton. To decrease the risk of cardiovascular comorbidity, aerobic training is recommended as a part of disease management in patients with axSpA. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) interventions are, in addition to other recommended treatments, believed to positively affect the disease activity (1). However, the knowledge about the acute effects of HIIT on the inflammatory process at the molecular level is less studied. Understanding the acute HIIT effects on cytokines and additional serum proteins in axSpA is important for further long-term HIIT interventions and recording of the effect of HIIT on the axSpA disease profile.ObjectivesTo study the acute effects on serum proteins, such as cytokines, myokines, and inflammatory- and bone-related proteins, in response to a single bout of HIIT, and to compare the levels between baseline and post-HIIT in patients with axSpA and healthy controls (HC).MethodsThe pilot study included twenty-one participants (10 female, 11 male), mean (SD) age 40 (7) years, ten with axSpA, and eleven age and sex matched HC, who performed a single HIIT on a cycle ergometer consisting of 4x4 minutes interval (90% heart rate, HR-max) with three minutes active rest in between (70% of HR-max). Disease activity (BASDAI, 0-10) in patients with axSpA was 1.6 (0.8). Health status EuroQol (EQ5D, 0-1) were 0.87 (0.11) for axSpA, and 0.93 (0.10) for HC. The groups were well matched with no difference in baseline data for weight, BMI, EQ5D, blood pressure or aerobic capacity.Blood samples were taken before (baseline) and one hour after the single HIIT. The following serum proteins were analyzed on a Luminex MAGPIX System (Luminex corporation, Austin, TX USA): Interleukin (IL)-6, IL-17, IL-18, TNFαAGPIX System (Luminex corporatiosteoprotegerin, osteocalcin, osteopontin, and FGF-23. A three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to detect differences between groups, between sexes, and before and after a HIIT bout in a 2(group)*2(sex)*2(time) design. For main effects or interactions significant at p≤0.05, simple effect t-tests were used to determine the specific effects.ResultsA group main effect (p=0.048) showed that the serum level of IL-6 was increased one hour after the HIIT session primarily in the HC, 0.4 pg/ml (SD±0.4) at baseline vs. post-HIIT 1.8 (2.0). The concentration of the cytokines/chemokine IL-17, IL-18, TNFα group main effect (p=0.048) showed that the serum level of IL-6 was increased one hour after the HIIT session primarily in30) in VEGF-A showed that the axSpA group had significantly lower VEGF-A at baseline, 159 pg/ml (138) vs 326 (184) in the control group (which might be due to anti-inflammatory medication). A sex main effect (p=0.029) was observed from baseline to post-HIIT for the bone hormone osteocalcin, with a more pronounced decrease of serum osteocalcin in women with axSpA, 14.0 ng/ml (8.3) vs. post HIIT 13.2 (6.9). Moreover, the level of the multifunctional protein osteopontin was significantly lower (sex main effect, p=0.021) in women, 10.7 ng/ml (7.0) vs. men 20.4 (10.1), post-HIIT.ConclusionThis pilot study shows that one bout of HIIT influences the expression of proteins involved in inflammation and metabolism, and that sex is an important factor in the response to HIIT. The results should be followed up in longer intervention studies including higher numbers of participants.References[1]Sveaas, S. H. et al. (2019). • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two copper-exchanged zeolites, Cu/SSZ-13 and Cu/BEA, were studied as catalysts for the selective reduction of NOx by NH3 (NH3-SCR). Their activities for standard SCR (NOx = NO) and fast SCR (NOx = 50% NO + 50% NO2) were measured before and after sulfur poisoning at 250 °C. The effect of 30 ppm SO2 and a mixture of 24 ppm SO3 + 6 ppm SO2 was evaluated. The repetition of subsequent activity measurements served as regeneration method in SCR conditions. SO2 deactivated Cu/SSZ-13 whereas Cu/BEA was only moderately affected. SO3 led to stronger deactivation of both catalysts than SO2. However, also for this case, the Cu/BEA was significantly less affected than Cu/SSZ-13, even though Cu/BEA contained larger amount of stored sulfur. One possible reason for this could be the large pores of Cu/BEA, where the sulfur species possibly resulted in less sterical hindrance than in the small pore SSZ-13 structure. NH3 temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD) showed no loss of storage sites upon sulfur treatment and subsequent regeneration. Partial activity recovery was observed after a period in SCR conditions at 400 °C and 500 °C. Temperature at 300 °C was insufficient to regenerate the catalysts. Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) of NO adsorption suggested that SO2 interacts with the ZCuOH sites on Cu/SSZ-13, causing the strong poisoning.

  • Children with borderline intellectual functioning and autism spectrum disorder : developmental trajectories from 4 to 11 years of age
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment. - 1176-6328 .- 1178-2021. ; 13, s. 2519-2526
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Studies on autism have tended to focus either on those with intellectual disability (ie, those with intellectual quotient [IQ] under 70) or on the group that is referred to as high-functioning, that is, those with borderline, average or above average IQ. The literature on cognition and daily functioning in autism spectrum disorder combined specifically with borderline intellectual functioning (IQ 70-84) is limited. Methods: From a representative group of 208 preschool children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, those 50 children in the group with borderline intellectual functioning at ages 4.5-6.5 years were targeted for follow-up at a median age of 10 years. A new cognitive test was carried out in 30 children. Parents were interviewed with a semi-structured interview together with the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales (n=41) and the Autism-Tics, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) and other comorbidities inventory (A-TAC) (n=36). Results: Most children of interviewed parents presented problems within several developmental areas. According to A-TAC and the clinical interview, there were high rates of attention deficits and difficulties with regulating activity level and impulsivity. Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales composite scores showed that at school age, a majority of the children had declined since the previous assessment at ages between 4.5 and 6.5 years. Almost half the tested group had shifted in their IQ level, to below 70 or above 84. Conclusion: None of the children assessed was without developmental/neuropsychiatric problems at school-age follow-up. The results support the need for comprehensive follow-up of educational, medical and developmental/neuropsychiatric needs, including a retesting of cognitive functions. There is also a need for continuing parent/family follow-up and support.

  • A comparison between written and spoken narratives in aphasia
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Clinical Linguistics & Phonetics. - London : Taylor & Francis. - 0269-9206 .- 1464-5076. ; 23:7, s. 507-528
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the present study was to explore how a personal narrative told by a group of eight persons with aphasia differed between written and spoken language, and to compare this with findings from 10 participants in a reference group. The stories were analysed through holistic assessments made by 60 participants without experience of aphasia and through measurement of lexical and syntactic variables. The findings showed that the participants with aphasia generally received lower ratings than the reference group, but also that stories written by participants with aphasia were rated as easier to understand, more interesting, and more coherent than the group’s spoken stories. Regression analysis showed that syntax could predict several of the rated variables for the stories told by the participants with aphasia. Results point to the need to include writing training in language rehabilitation in order to increase the ability for persons with aphasia to participate in communicative situations in everyday life.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Resuscitation. - : Elsevier Ireland Ltd. - 0300-9572 .- 1873-1570. ; 170, s. 352-360
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Systems for smartphone dispatch of lay responders to perform cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and bring automated external defibrillators to out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCAs) are advocated by recent international guidelines and emerging worldwide. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the emotional responses, posttraumatic stress reactions and levels of wellbeing among smartphone-alerted lay responders dispatched to suspected OHCAs. Methods: Lay responders were stratified by level of exposure: unexposed (Exp-0), tried to reach (Exp-1), and reached the suspected OHCA (Exp-2). Participants rated their emotional responses online, at 90 minutes and at 4–6 weeks after an incident. Level of emotional response was measured in two dimensions of core affect: “alertness” – from deactivation to activation, and “pleasantness” – from unpleasant to pleasant. At 4–6 weeks, WHO wellbeing index and level of posttraumatic stress (PTSD) were also rated. Results: Altogether, 915 (28%) unexposed and 1471 (64%) exposed responders completed the survey. Alertness was elevated in the exposed groups: Exp-0: 6.7 vs. Exp-1: 7.3 and Exp-2: 7.5, (p < 0.001) and pleasantness was highest in the unexposed group: 6.5, vs. Exp-1: 6.3, and Exp-2: 6.1, (p < 0.001). Mean scores for PTSD at follow-up was below clinical cut-off, Exp-0: 9.9, Exp-1: 8.9 and Exp-2: 8.8 (p = 0.065). Wellbeing index showed no differences, Exp-0: 78.0, Exp-1: 78.5 and Exp-2: 79.9 (p = 0.596). Conclusion: Smartphone dispatched lay responders rated the experience as high-energy and mainly positive. No harm to the lay responders was seen. The exposed groups had low posttraumatic stress scores and high-level general wellbeing at follow-up. © 2021

  • Surface Characterisation Using ToF-SIMS, AES and XPS of Silane Films and Organic Coatings Deposited on Metal Substrates
  • 2003
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This work focuses on the surface and interfacial characterisation of silane films of a non-organofunctional silane, 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane (BTSE), and an organofunctional silane, γ-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (γ-MPS), deposited on Al, Zn and Al-43.4Zn-1.6Si (AlZn) alloy coated steel. Furthermore, a tribological study of a vegetable oil coupled to an aluminium surface pre-treated with γ-MPS is presented and, finally, the tribological response of thin organic coatings exposed to a sliding contact as evaluated by surface analysis is discussed. The main analyses techniques used were time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results presented in this thesis show that the combination of ToF-SIMS, AES and XPS analysis can be used in order to obtain useful and complementary information regarding the surface and interface characteristics of silane films and organic coatings deposited on metal substrates. The major result regarding the silane films is that the silane film composition/structure is not dependent of pH-value during deposition or type of metal substrate. The presence of Si-O-Me ion fragments in the ToF-SIMS spectra is a strong indication that a chemical interaction between the silane film and the metal substrate exists. Furthermore, it has been shown that it is possible to bond a vegetable oil to a thiol functionalised aluminium surface and to produce a coating thick enough to obtain desired friction and wear characteristics. Finally, the use of ToF-SIMS analysis makes it possible to distinguish between mechanical and tribochemical wear mechanisms.

  • Model calibration of wooden structure assemblies : using EMA and FEA
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: World Conference on Timber Engineering (WCTE), Quebec City, 10-14 August, 2014.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To predict and possibly, when needed to fulfil regularizations or other requirements, change the design to lower the impact sound transmission in light weight buildings prior to building, dynamically representative calculation models of assemblies are out most important. The quality of such models depends on the descriptions of the components themselves but also of the representation of the junction connecting the building components together. The material properties of commonly used components have a documented spread in literature. Therefore, to validate junction models, the dynamics of the assembly components at hand have to be known. Here, the dynamic properties of a number of component candidates are measured using hammer excited vibrational tests. Some of the components are selected to build up wooden assemblies which are evaluated both when they are screwed together and when they are screwed and glued together. The focus is here on achieving representative finite element models of the junctions between the building parts composing the assemblies.

  • Effects of 3months of detraining following cardiac rehabilitation in patients with atrial fibrillation.
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: European review of aging and physical activity : official journal of the European Group for Research into Elderly and Physical Activity. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1813-7253. ; 19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Atrial fibrillation negatively impacts physical fitness and health-related quality of life. We recently showed that 3months of physiotherapist-led exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation improves physical fitness and muscle function in elderly patients with permanent atrial fibrillation and concomitant diseases. Little is, however, known about the consequences for physical fitness, physical activity level, and health-related quality of life after ending the rehabilitation period.Prospective 3months follow-up study of 38 patients out of 40 eligible (10 women) who, as part of a randomized controlled trial, had completed a 3months physiotherapist-led cardiac rehabilitation resulting in improved physical fitness,. In the current study, the participants were instructed to refrain from exercise for 3months after completion of the rehabilitation period. Primary outcome measure was physical fitness measured as highest achieved workload using an exercise tolerance test. Secondary outcome measures were muscle function (muscle endurance tests), physical activity level (questionnaire and accelerometer), and health-related quality of life, (Short Form-36), as in the preceding intervention study. We used the Wilcoxon Signed Rank test to analyse differences between the end of rehabilitation and at follow-up. The effect size was determined using Cohen's d .Exercise capacity and exercise time significantly decresead between end of rehabilitation and at follow-up (p<.0001 for both). A significant reduction in shoulder flexion repetitions (p=.006) was observed as well as reduced health-related quality of life in the Short Form-36 dimensions Physical Function (p=.042), Mental Health (p=.030), and Mental Component Score (p=.035). There were, however, no changes regarding objective and subjective physical activity measurements. In older patients with permanent atrial fibrillation, previously achieved improvements from physiotherapist-led exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation in physical fitness and muscle function were lost, and health-related quality of life was impaired after ending the rehabilitation period. A strategy for conserving improvements after a rehabilitation period is essential.

  • Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation improves physical fitness in patients with permanent atrial fibrillation - A randomized controlled study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Translational Sports Medicine. - : Hindawi Limited. - 2573-8488. ; 3:5, s. 415-425
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this multicenter randomized controlled trial was to compare physiotherapist-led exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation (PT-X) with physical activity on prescription (PAP) with regard to physical fitness, physical activity, health-related quality of life (HR-QoL), and metabolic risk markers in patients with permanent atrial fibrillation. Ninety six patients (28 women), age 74 (5) years, and ejection fraction >= 45% were randomized. An exercise tolerance test (primary outcome measure), muscle endurance tests, HR-QoL, physical activity assessments (questionnaire and accelerometer), and blood sampling were performed. The PT-X consisted of 60-minute group sessions and home-based exercise, both twice a week. The PAP consisted of 40 minutes of active walking, 4 times a week. Eighty seven patients completed the study. Exercise tolerance (maximum exercise capacity) improved significantly after PT-X (n = 40) but not after PAP (n = 47) (16 vs -3 W; P < .0001). Muscle endurance also improved after PT-X: shoulder flexion left arm (7 vs -1 repetition; P < .001), heel-lift right leg (4 vs 1 repetition; P < .05), left leg (4 vs -1 repetition; P < .001), and shoulder abduction (17 vs -4 s; P < .010). PAP significantly increased energy expenditure. Health-related quality of life and lab-tests did not differ. PT-X improved physical fitness in patients with permanent atrial fibrillation.

  • Determination of absorbed dose to water around a clinical HDR 192-Ir source using LiF:Mg,Ti TLDs demonstrates an LET dependence of detector response
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Medical physics (Lancaster). - USA : American Association of Physicists in Medicine. - 0094-2405. ; 39:2, s. 1133-1140
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Experimental radiation dosimetry with thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs), calibrated in a (60)Co or megavoltage (MV) photon beam, is recommended by AAPM TG-43U1for verification of Monte Carlo calculated absorbed doses around brachytherapy sources. However, it has been shown by Carlsson Tedgren et al. [Med. Phys. 38, 5539-5550 (2011)] that for TLDs of LiF:Mg,Ti, detector response was 4% higher in a (137)Cs beam than in a (60)Co one. The aim of this work was to investigate if similar over-response exists when measuring absorbed dose to water around (192)Ir sources, using LiF:Mg,Ti dosimeters calibrated in a 6 MV photon beam. Methods: LiF dosimeters were calibrated to measure absorbed dose to water in a 6 MV photon beam and used to measure absorbed dose to water at distances of 3, 5, and 7 cm from a clinical high dose rate (HDR) (192)Ir source in a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) phantom. Measured values were compared to values of absorbed dose to water calculated using a treatment planning system (TPS) including corrections for the difference in energy absorption properties between calibration quality and the quality in the users' (192)Ir beam and for the use of a PMMA phantom instead of the water phantom underlying dose calculations in the TPS.Results: Measured absorbed doses to water around the (192)Ir source were overestimated by 5% compared to those calculated by the TPS. Corresponding absorbed doses to water measured in a previous work with lithium formate electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) dosimeters by Antonovic et al. [Med. Phys. 36, 2236-2247 (2009)], using the same irradiation setup and calibration procedure as in this work, were 2% lower than those calculated by the TPS. The results obtained in the measurements in this work and those obtained using the EPR lithium formate dosimeters were, within the expanded (k = 2) uncertainty, in agreement with the values derived by the TPS. The discrepancy between the results using LiF:Mg,Ti TLDs and the EPR lithium formate dosimeters was, however, statistically significant and in agreement with the difference in relative detector responses found for the two detector systems by Carlsson Tedgren et al. [Med. Phys. 38, 5539-5550 (2011)] and by Adolfsson et al. [Med. Phys. 37, 4946-4959 (2010)].Conclusions: When calibrated in (60)Co or MV photon beams, correction for the linear energy transfer (LET) dependence of LiF:Mg,Ti detector response will be needed as to measure absorbed doses to water in a (192)Ir beam with highest accuracy. Such corrections will depend on the manufacturing process (MTS-N Poland or Harshaw TLD-100) and details of the annealing and read-out schemes used.

  • HRG regulates tumor progression, epithelial to mesenchymal transition and metastasis via platelet-induced signaling in the pre-tumorigenic microenvironment
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Angiogenesis. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0969-6970 .- 1573-7209. ; 16:4, s. 889-902
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mice lacking histidine-rich glycoprotein (HRG) display an accelerated angiogenic switch and larger tumors-a phenotype caused by enhanced platelet activation in the HRG-deficient mice. Here we show that platelets induce molecular changes in the pre-tumorigenic environment in HRG-deficient mice, promoting cell survival, angiogenesis and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and that these effects involved signaling via TBK1, Akt2 and PDGFR beta. These early events subsequently translate into an enhanced rate of spontaneous metastasis to distant organs in mice lacking HRG. Later in tumor development characteristic features of pathological angiogenesis, such as decreased perfusion and pericyte coverage, are more pronounced in HRG-deficient mice. At this stage, platelets are essential to support the larger tumor volumes formed in mice lacking HRG by keeping their tumor vasculature sufficiently functional. We conclude that HRG-deficiency promotes tumor progression via enhanced platelet activity and that platelets play a dual role in this process. During early stages of transformation, activated platelets promote tumor cell survival, the angiogenic switch and invasiveness. In the more progressed tumor, platelets support the enhanced pathological angiogenesis and hence increased tumor growth seen in the absence of HRG. Altogether, our findings strengthen the notion of HRG as a potent tumor suppressor, with capacity to attenuate the angiogenic switch, tumor growth, EMT and subsequent metastatic spread, by regulating platelet activity.

  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Advanced Solid State Lasers. - : Optica Publishing Group.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new design concept for compact diode-pumped solid-state lasers is presented. The design is based on a microstructured silicon carrier with etched v-grooves. This silicon microbench provides efficient thermal management at 10W pumping level, as well as compact integration and alignment of all active and passive optical components of compact diode-pumped solid-state lasers. In initial experiments, a Nd:YAG laser built on the microbench delivered a continuous-wave output of 3W.
