  • Acromegaly management in the Nordic countries: A Delphi consensus survey
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Clinical Endocrinology. - : WILEY. - 0300-0664 .- 1365-2265.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ObjectiveAcromegaly is associated with increased morbidity and mortality if left untreated. The therapeutic options include surgery, medical treatment, and radiotherapy. Several guidelines and recommendations on treatment algorithms and follow-up exist. However, not all recommendations are strictly evidence-based. To evaluate consensus on the treatment and follow-up of patients with acromegaly in the Nordic countries.MethodsA Delphi process was used to map the landscape of acromegaly management in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Iceland. An expert panel developed 37 statements on the treatment and follow-up of patients with acromegaly. Dedicated endocrinologists (n = 47) from the Nordic countries were invited to rate their extent of agreement with the statements, using a Likert-type scale (1-7). Consensus was defined as >= 80% of panelists rating their agreement as >= 5 or <= 3 on the Likert-type scale.ResultsConsensus was reached in 41% (15/37) of the statements. Panelists agreed that pituitary surgery remains first line treatment. There was general agreement to recommend first-generation somatostatin analog (SSA) treatment after failed surgery and to consider repeat surgery. In addition, there was agreement to recommend combination therapy with first-generation SSA and pegvisomant as second- or third-line treatment. In more than 50% of the statements, consensus was not achieved. Considerable disagreement existed regarding pegvisomant monotherapy, and treatment with pasireotide and dopamine agonists.ConclusionThis consensus exploration study on the management of patients with acromegaly in the Nordic countries revealed a relatively large degree of disagreement among experts, which mirrors the complexity of the disease and the shortage of evidence-based data.

  • Swedish healthcare management practices and quality improvement work - development trends
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Health Care Quality Assurance. - : Emerald. - 0952-6862 .- 1758-6542. ; 24:2, s. 101-123
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to empirically examine developmental trends in healthcare organisation management practice and improvement work. Design/methodology/approach – Primary healthcare centre (n ¼ 1; 031) and clinical hospital department (n ¼ 1; 542) managers were surveyed in spring 2007 (response rate 46 per cent). This article compares results from this survey with a study in 2003. A theoretical framework based on organisational inner context, organisational outer context, external environment and outcomes form the analytical base. Comparisons were made using independent two-sample t-tests. Findings – A general aspect, identified empirically, is the tendency toward increased external pressure on leaders in their improvement work. Higher management decisions, patient pressure and decisions made by policymakers increasingly influence and shape the choices made by healthcare managers about where to focus improvement efforts. Three different trends are empirically identified and elaborated: take-control logic; practice-based improvement; and patient-centeredness. Research limitations/implications – Healthcare leaders should carefully design new management control systems that support healthcare micro systems. Findings support the general assumption that staff increasingly tend to focus organisational changes on management control. Originality/value – This study extends management research with a unique survey. Through two measurements made in 2003 and 2007, several important trends about how healthcare organisations are managed and developed are identified.

  • Sustainable public procurement in large infrastructure projects—policy implementation for carbon emission reductions
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI AG. - 2071-1050. ; 13:20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The infrastructure construction sector is a significant source of carbon emissions, and more stringent procurement requirements are central to meeting reduction targets in this demand-led and project-based industry. This paper aims to analyze the implementation of international policies for reducing carbon emissions in infrastructure construction, focusing on the interaction between policy ambitions and procurement practices. Based on case studies of large projects and their contexts in five countries worldwide: Australia, the Netherlands, Sweden, the UK, and the US, a cross-country comparison is performed of how policies and practices for carbon reduction develop across multiple implementation levels. Three levels are included in the analysis: policy, industry, and project level. We identify the projects as either drivers of policy goals, frontrunners in industry-level development processes, or translators of national policy. These roles, and the associated pathways for carbon emission reduction, are context-specific and depend on the policy ambitions at the national or regional level, the maturity of the supplier market, and, often, on the strategies of individual champions at the project level. Long-term learning processes, both within and between the various levels, are essential for advancing carbon reduction.

  • Alfabetets användning : Konkret poesi och poetisk artefaktion i svenskt 1960-tal
  • 2005
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The subject of this dissertation is the so-called concrete poetry that was written in Sweden during the 1960s and, to a small extent, in the 1950s, by Öyvind Fahlström, Jarl Hammarberg, Åke Hodell, Bengt Emil Johnson, and others. The study is focused on a discussion of the forms and the ways of writing that were explored, but it also gives an account of the aesthetic-historical context – of the expanded field of the arts in the 1960s, of the early avant-garde, of related forms of writing in earlier literature, such as pattern poetry. The readings are oriented toward different aspects of the texts, such as ’kneaded’ words, disruptive syntax, ’algorithmic’ forms and methods, visuality, and sonority. Two key concepts are ’artifice’ and ’materiality’, both of which indicate how the texts discussed complicate a view of poetry as ’pure’ expression of thought and emotion, or as representation of speech or language (in a restricted sense). These writings use the alphabet in an unorthodox way, and they transgress its territory by approaching other arts and other forms of ’writing’.If one of the aims of the study is to analyze the poetical forms and operations at stake, another one is to connect these to a modern ’media age’, and to discuss the impact of media technologies as well as new conceptions and theories of writing, information, and communication (for example, cybernetics) on poetry. This contextualization gives a specific meaning and value to the texts, and paves the way for a series of questions about reading, subjectivity, and political aspects of poetry.

  • Intensive treatment and stem cell transplantation in chronic myelogenous leukemia : long-term follow-up
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Acta Haematologica. - : S. Karger AG. - 0001-5792 .- 1421-9662. ; 113:3, s. 155-162
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the present study we combined interferon (IFN) and hydroxyurea (HU) treatment, intensive chemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplantation (SCT) in newly diagnosed chronic myelogenous leukemia patients aged below 56 years, not eligible for allogeneic SCT. Patients who had an HLA-identical sibling donor and no contraindication went for an allogeneic SCT (related donor, RD). After diagnosis, patients not allotransplanted received HU and IFN to keep WBC and platelet counts low. After 6 months patients with Ph-positive cells still present in the bone marrow received 1–3 courses of intensive chemotherapy. Those who became Ph-negative after IFN + HU or after 1–3 chemotherapy courses underwent autologous SCT. Some patients with poor cytogenetic response were allotransplanted with an unrelated donor (URD). IFN + HU reduced the percentage of Ph-positive metaphases in 56% of patients, and 1 patient became Ph-negative. After one or two intensive cytotherapies 86 and 88% had a Ph reduction, and 34 and 40% became Ph-negative, respectively. In patients receiving a third intensive chemotherapy 92% achieved a Ph reduction and 8% became Ph-negative. The median survival after auto-SCT (n = 46) was 7.5 years. The chance of remaining Ph-negative for up to 10 years after autologous SCT was around 20%. The overall survival for allo-SCT RD (n = 91) and URD (n = 28) was almost the same, i.e. ≈60% at 10 years. The median survival for all 251 patients registered was 8 years (historical controls 3.5 years). The role of the treatment schedule presented in the imatinib era is discussed.

  • Experimental characterization of high-speed 1.55 mu m buried heterostructure InGaAsP/InGaAlAs quantum-well lasers
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Optical Society of America. B, Optical physics. - 0740-3224 .- 1520-8540. ; 26:2, s. 318-327
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Detailed experimental characterization is performed for 1550 nm semi-insulating regrown buried heterostructure Fabry-Perot (FP) lasers having 20 InGaAsP/InGaAlAs strain-balanced quantum wells (QWs) in the active region. Light-current-voltage performance, electrical impedance, small-signal response below and above threshold, amplified spontaneous emission spectrum below threshold and relative intensity noise spectrum are measured. Different laser parameters such as external differential quantum efficiency eta(d), background optical loss alpha(i), K-factor, D-factor, characteristic temperature T-0, differential gain dg/dn, gain-compression factor epsilon, carrier density versus current, differential carrier lifetime tau(d), optical gain spectrum below threshold, and chirp parameter alpha are extracted from these measurements. The FP lasers exhibited a high T-0 (78-86.5 degrees C) and very high-resonance frequency (23.7 GHz). The results indicate that appropriately designed lasers having a large number of InGaAsP well/InGaAlAs barrier QWs with shallow valence-band discontinuity can be useful for un-cooled high-speed direct-modulated laser applications.

  • The effect of barrier composition on the vertical carrier transport and lasing properties of 1.55-mu m multiple quantum-well structures
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics. - 0018-9197 .- 1558-1713. ; 42:7, s. 713-714
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, the effect of barrier bandgap and composition on the optical performance of 1.55-mu m InGaAsP/In-GaAsP and InGaAsP/InGaAlAs multiple quantum-well structures and Fabry-Perot lasers is evaluated experimentally. Direct vertical carrier transport measurements were performed through strain-compensated multiple quantum-well (MQW) test structures using femto-second laser pulse excitation and time-resolved photoluminescence up-conversion method. MQW test structures were grown with different barrier composition (InGaAsP and InGaAlAs) and barrier bandgap (varied from lambda(g) = 1440 to 1260 nm) having different conduction band Delta E-c and valence band discontinuity Delta E-v, while keeping the same InGaAsP well composition for all the structures. The ambipolar carrier transport was found to be faster in the structures with lower valence band discontinuity Delta E-v. Regrown semi-insulating buried heterostructure Fabry-Perot (SIBH-FP) lasers were fabricated from similar QWs and their static light-current-voltage characteristics (including optical gain and chirp spectra below threshold) and thermal characteristics were measured. Lasers with InGaAlAs barrier showed improved high-temperature operation, higher optical gain, higher differential gain, and lower chirp, making them suitable candidates for high-bandwidth directly modulated uncooled laser applications.

  • Morphology, vocalizations, and mitochondrial DNA suggest that the Graceful Prinia is two species
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Ornithology. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0004-8038 .- 2732-4613 .- 1938-4254. ; 138:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Prinias (Cisticolidae:Prinia) are resident warblers of open areas across Africa and Asia and include many polytypic species whose species limits have not been seriously reevaluated recently. Based on an integrative taxonomic analysis of morphology, song, and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), we suggest that 2 species should be recognized in the Graceful Prinia (Prinia gracilis) complex. In addition, our morphological analyses show the existence of a well-marked undescribed form in southeastern Somalia, which we name herein as a new subspecies. Prinia gracilisis a small, drab, long-tailed species with streaking above and plain pale underparts that has been suggested to fall into 2 groups: the southwestern nominate group (from Egypt to Oman) and the northeastern lepida group (from Turkey through India). However, the characters presented to justify this grouping are variable and show a mosaic pattern, and whether genetic and vocal differences exist is unknown. We found consistent between-group song differences, with the nominate group giving consistently longer inter-phrase intervals, whereas the members of the lepida group sing an essentially continuous reel. An mtDNA tree suggests a deep split between the nominate and lepida groups, with a coalescence time between these clades of similar to 2.2 million years ago. Vocal and mtDNA analyses provided evidence that the northeastern Arabian Peninsula taxon carpenteri belongs to the lepida group. We found that, of all the morphological characters proposed, only proportions and tail barring and spotting relatively consistently distinguish the 2 groups. However, these characters strongly suggest that the eastern Arabian Peninsula is populated by taxa of both the gracilis and lepida groups, in different areas, but we lack genetic and bioacoustic data to corroborate this. Although further study is needed in potential contact zones, we suggest that 2 species should be recognized in the P. gracilis complex, and we propose the retention of the English name Graceful Prinia for P. gracilis sensu stricto, while we suggest that P. lepida be known as Delicate Prinia.

  • Practice-based Improvements in Healthcare
  • 2010
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A central problem for the healthcare sector today is how to manage change and improvements. In recent decades the county councils in Sweden have started various improvement initiatives and programs in order to improve their healthcare services. The improvement program of the Kalmar county council, which constitutes the empirical context for this thesis, is one of those initiatives. The purpose of this thesis is to contribute to a broader understanding of large-scale improvement program in a healthcare setting. This is done by analyzing practitioner’s improvement ideas, describing participants in the improvement projects, revising and testing a survey to measure the development of improvement ideas and describing the improvement program from a theoretical perspective. The theoretical change model used looks at change from two opposing directions in six dimensions; Goals, Leadership, Focus, Process, Reward system and Use of consultants. The aims of the county council improvement program are to become a learning organization, disseminate improvement methodologies and implement continuous quality improvements in the organization. All healthcare administrations and departments in the county council were invited to apply for funds to accomplish improvement projects. Another initiative invited staff teams to work with improvement ideas in a program with support from facilitators, using the breakthrough methodology. Now almost all ongoing developments, improvements, patient safety projects, manager and leader development initiatives are put together under the county council improvement program umbrella. In the appended papers both qualitative and quantitative research approach were used. The first study (paper I) analyzed which types of improvement projects practitioners are engaged in using qualitative content analysis. Five main categories were identified: Organizational Process; Evidence and Quality; Competence Development; Process Technology; and Proactive Patient Work. Most common was a focus on organizational changes and process, while least frequent was proactive patient work. Besides these areas of focus, almost all aimed to increase patient safety and increase effectiveness and availability.Paper II described the participants in two of the initiatives, the categorized improvement projects in paper I and the team members in the methodology guided improvement programs. Strong professions like physicians and nurses were well represented, but other staff groups were not as active. Managers were responsible for a majority of the projects. The gender perspective reflected the overall mix of employees in the county council.Paper III described a revision and test of a Minnesota Innovation Survey (MIS) that will be used to follow and measure how quality improvement ideas develop and improve over time. Descriptive statistics were presented. The respondents were satisfied with their work and what they had accomplished. The most common comment was about time, not having enough time to work with the improvement idea and the difficulty of finding time because of regular tasks. This was the first test of the revised survey and the high use of the answer alternative “Do not know” showed that the survey did not fit the context very well in its present version.Trying to connect the county council improvement program and the initiatives studied in papers I and II with the change model gave rise to some considerations. The county council improvement program has an effort to combine organizational changes and a culture that encourages continuous improvements. Top-down and bottom-up management approaches are used, through setting out strategies from above and at the same time encouraging practitioners to improve their day-to-day work. Whether this will be a successful way to implement and achieve a continuous improvement culture in the whole organization is one of the main issues remaining to find out in further studies.

  • Study on reduced process temperature for energy optimisation in mesophilic digestion : A lab to full-scale study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Applied Energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0306-2619 .- 1872-9118. ; 271
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This unique study combined the lab and full scales to investigate how the anaerobic digestion process of sewage sludge was affected by a temperature change within the lower mesophilic temperature range (32–37.5 °C). Both scientific methane potential experiments and dewaterability studies were made to be used in changes of the operational conditions for a full-scale wastewater treatment plant. The aim of this study was to reduce anaerobic digestions heat consumption by altering the operational mesophilic temperature in first lab-scale experiments and then in continuation to full-scale conditions. The results of the study suggest that it is possible to save approximately 13% in heat energy demand each year by reducing the temperature for anaerobic digestion by 2.5 °C. At the lab scale, the effect of temperature on biogas production was tested in a batch experiment by measuring the biochemical methane production. At 32 °C, the production of biogas decreased by 11% compared to that at 37.5 °C. No significant difference was observed between 37.5 °C and 34.5 °C. The effect of temperature on sludge dewaterability was tested by measuring the capillary suction time, and no difference was detected between various temperatures. To confirm these results, the temperature in two full-scale digesters was gradually adjusted from 37.5 °C to 35 °C. No change was observed in biogas production, process stability, or dewaterability. The amount of heat energy that can be saved for the full-scale digesters was calculated using a heat balance. This study shows that it is possible to reduce the heat demand for AD in real applications without compromising the biogas production and process stability.

  • Quantitative comparison of cities : Distribution of street and building types based on density and centrality measures
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 11th International Space Syntax Symposium, SSS 2017. - : Instituto Superior Tecnico, Departamento de Engenharia Civil, Arquitetura e Georrecursos. - 9789729899447 ; 2, s. 44.1-44.18
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It has been argued that different urban configurations-planned vs. organic, treelike vs. grid like-perform differently when it comes to the intensity and distribution of pedestrian flows, built density and land uses. However, definitions of urban configurations are often rather abstract, ill-defined and at worse end in fixed stereotypes hiding underlying spatial complexity. Recent publications define morphological typologies based on quantitative variables (e.g. Barthelemy, 2015; Serra, 2013a; Gil et al., 2012; Berghauser Pont and Haupt, 2010) and solve some of these shortcomings. These approaches contribute to the discussion of types in two ways: firstly, they allow for the definition of types based on multiple variables in a precise and repeattable manner, enabling the study of large samples and the comparison between both cities and regions; secondly, they frame design choices in terms of types without being fixed and so open up for design explorations where the relation between the variables can be challenged to propose new types. This paper explores the typologies defined by Serra (2013a) and Berghauser Pont and Haupt (2010) further, as these target two of the most important morphological entities of urban form, namely the street network and the building structure. The purpose is to gain a better understanding of how types are composed and distributed within and across different cities. The method is based on GIS and statistical modeling of four cities to allow for a comparative analysis of four cities: Amsterdam, London, Stockholm and Gothenburg. For the street network, we process the Road-Centre-line maps to obtain a clean network model, then run segment angular analysis to calculate the space syntax measures of betweenness at different metric radii, defining the "centrality palimpsest" (Serra, 2013a). For the building structure, we process elevation data to obtain building height, then run accessible density analysis for all building density metrics (FSI, GSI, OSR, L) using the Place Syntax Tool (Berghauser Pont and Marcus, 2014). The street and building types are defined using cluster analysis (unsupervised classification), following a similar approach to Serra (2013a). The result is a typology of street ('paths') and building types ('places'), with different profiles of centrality and density across scales. The spatial distribution and frequency of these types across the four cities gives an objective summary of their spatial structure, identifying common as well as unique traits.

    • Typologies play a role in urban studies since a long time, but definitions are often rather abstract, ill-defined and at worst end in fixed stereotypes hiding underlying spatial complexity. Traditional typologies are focussing on separate elements, which allow for understanding crucial differences of one spatial feature in greater detail, but lack the capacity to capture the interrelation between elements. Further, they often focus on one scale level and therefore lack to acknowledge for interscalarity. Recent publications define morphological typologies based on quantitative variables, building on the seminal book ´Urban Space and Structures´ by Martin and March, published in 1972, but using more advanced spatial analysis and statistics. These approaches contribute to the discussion of types in two ways: firstly, they define types in a precise and repeatable manner allowing for city-scale comparisons; secondly, they acknowledge cross-scale dynamics important for e.g. living qualities and economic processes where not only the local conditions are important, but also the qualities in proximity. This paper focuses on the comparison of building types in three Swedish cities, using the multi-variable and multi-scalar density definition. A statistical clustering method is used to classify cases according to their measured similarity across the scales. The results show that working with types is a fruitful way to reveal the individual identity of these types, compare cities and highlight some differences in the way the three cities are structured.

    • Typologies have always played an important role in urban planning and design practice and formal studies have been central to the field of urban morphology. These studies have predominantly been of a historical-qualitative nature and do not support quantitative comparisons between urban areas and between different cities, nor offer the precise and comprehensive descriptions needed by those engaged in urban planning and design practice. To describe contemporary urban forms, which are more diffuse and often elude previous historic typologies, systematic quantitative methods can be useful but, until recently, these have played a limited role in typo-morphological studies. This paper contributes to recent developments in this field by integrating multi-variable geometric descriptions with inter-scalar relational descriptions of urban form. It presents typologies for three key elements of urban form (streets, plots and buildings) in five European cities, produced using statistical clustering methods. In a first instance, the resulting typologies contribute to a better understanding of the characteristics of streets, plots and buildings. In particular, the results offer insight into patterns between the types (i.e. which types are found in combination and which not) and provide a new large scale comparative analysis across five European cities. To conclude, a link between quantitative analysis and theory is established, by testing two well-known theoretical propositions in urban morphology: the concept of the burgage cycle and the theory of natural movement.

  • Typology based on three density variables central to Spacematrix using cluster analysis
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings ISUF 2017 XXIV international conference: City and territory in the globalization age. ; , s. 1337-1348
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since the publication of the book ‘Spacematrix. Space, density and urban form’ (Berghauser Pont and Haupt, 2010), the Spacematrix method has been linked back to its theoretical foundations by Steadman (2013), is further developed using the measure of accessible density to arrive at a density measure that more closely relates to the environment as experienced by people moving through the city (Berghauser Pont and Marcus, 2014) which then is used to arrive at a multi-scalar density typology (Berghauser Pont et al. 2017). This paper will take yet another step in the development of the Spacematrix method by including the measure of network density in the classification which until now was not used to its full potential. Important for successful classification is the ability to ascertain the fundamental characteristics on which the classification is to be based where the work of Berghauser Pont and Haupt (2010) will be followed addressing three key variables: Floor Space Index (FSI), Ground Space Index (GSI) and Network density (N) where especially the last was not fully included in the earlier work. Besides a typology based on these three variables, this paper will also result in a robust statistical method that can later be used on larger samples for city-scale comparisons. Two statistical methods are tested: hierarchical clustering and centroid-based clustering and besides a general discussion about their strong and weak points, the paper shows that the hierarchical method is more convincing in distinguishing differences in both building type and street pattern that is especially captured with Network density (N). As this method is not useful for large datasets we propose a combination of the two clustering methods as the way forward.

  • Perceptions of Improvement Work in Swedish Health Care: Implications for Improvement Practices.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Quality Management in Health Care. - 1063-8628 .- 1550-5154. ; 12:4, s. 217-224
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study explored perceptions of improvement work in Swedish health care. The article discusses effects that these perceptions may have on improvement processes. As part of a broader study surveying managers' (n = 2313) view of improvement work in Swedish health care, this study focused on those 845 managers who regarded their improvement work as bringing about benefits. Three underlying factors that may characterize the managers' perceptions are exposed. More than 50% of the respondents perceive a complexity in the practices and techniques associated with improvement work. Furthermore, approximately 50% of the managers recognize a conflict in the meeting between the improvement work and the organization. This indicates that adaptation is a primary concern in this work. The managers' perceptions also reveal that the experience of improvement work in Swedish health care may be positive, although the perception is that it does not necessarily generate more health care per monetary unit.ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR

  • Ingår i: Journal of Computational Chemistry. - : Wiley. - 1096-987X .- 0192-8651. ; 34:19, s. 1697-1705
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a new software framework for Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling for simulation, prediction, and inference of protein structure. The software package contains implementations of recent advances in Monte Carlo methodology, such as efficient local updates and sampling from probabilistic models of local protein structure. These models form a probabilistic alternative to the widely used fragment and rotamer libraries. Combined with an easily extendible software architecture, this makes PHAISTOS well suited for Bayesian inference of protein structure from sequence and/or experimental data. Currently, two force-fields are available within the framework: PROFASI and OPLS-AA/L, the latter including the generalized Born surface area solvent model. A flexible command-line and configuration-file interface allows users quickly to set up simulations with the desired configuration. PHAISTOS is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0. Source code and documentation are freely available from http://phaistos.sourceforge.net. The software is implemented in C++ and has been tested on Linux and OSX platforms. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

  • Ingår i: Ambio. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0044-7447 .- 1654-7209. ; 40:6, s. 705-716
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding the responses of tundra systemsto global change has global implications. Most tundraregions lack sustained environmental monitoring and oneof the only ways to document multi-decadal change is toresample historic research sites. The International PolarYear (IPY) provided a unique opportunity for such researchthrough the Back to the Future (BTF) project (IPY project#512). This article synthesizes the results from 13 paperswithin this Ambio Special Issue. Abiotic changes includeglacial recession in the Altai Mountains, Russia; increasedsnow depth and hardness, permafrost warming, andincreased growing season length in sub-arctic Sweden;drying of ponds in Greenland; increased nutrient availabilityin Alaskan tundra ponds, and warming at mostlocations studied. Biotic changes ranged from relativelyminor plant community change at two sites in Greenland tomoderate change in the Yukon, and to dramatic increasesin shrub and tree density on Herschel Island, and in subarcticSweden. The population of geese tripled at one sitein northeast Greenland where biomass in non-grazed plotsdoubled. A model parameterized using results from a BTFstudy forecasts substantial declines in all snowbeds andincreases in shrub tundra on Niwot Ridge, Colorado overthe next century. In general, results support and provideimproved capacities for validating experimental manipulation, remote sensing, and modeling studies.

  • Moving Images of Literature : Transformations of Literature in Contemporary Video and Film Installation Art
  • 2015
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study aims to contribute to a better understanding of the many engagements with literature beyond the literary field. More specifically, it studies different ways of staging and transforming literature in video and film installation since the 1990s. The dissertation presents a close reading of four artworks, each representing a key approach to transformation: Stan Douglas’ Der Sandmann (1995), based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s 1817 short story of the same title; Gerard Byrne’s 1984 and Beyond (2005–07), a staging of a conversation between science fiction writers, originally published in Playboy magazine in 1963; Fiona Tan’s Disorient (2009), which takes Marco Polo’s travelogue from the late thirteenth century as its point of departure; and Kutluğ Ataman’s The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (2009), derived from Shakespeare’s plays. Video and film installation occupies an important position in contemporary art, often using pre-existing cultural material from other media. Its specific temporal and spatial structure makes it a particularly rich art form for the study of how literary works are transformed, and what images of literature, in its broadest sense, are used and set in motion. The focus is on processes of transformation through selection and modification, interpretation, reframing, and shift in media. The study is informed by theories from the fields of intertextuality, intermediality, adaptation studies, and artistic appropriation. Each of the artists turn to widely-known works or authors. The approaches to literature range from the projection of alphanumeric text to the staging of a conversation between authors, which shifts the focus from the literary work to the discourses and conditions of literature. It becomes clear that the artists, in their installations, do not necessarily perform retellings of their sources. Literature is discussed in its role as a vehicle for cultural values, as a place where narrative conventions are negotiated, and where cultural space is mediated and constructed. All the studied artists employ a variety of devices of estrangement. The dissertation especially discusses the oscillation between source and derived work in relation to the installations’ self-reflexive form.

  • Collaborating with Gertrude Stein : Media ecologies, reception, poetics
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The reception of the American avant-garde poet, playwright, art collector and salon hostess Gertrude Stein (1874-1946) has to a wide extent taken place in an aesthetic context prior to her work’s academic and hermeneutic canonization. This thesis is in part a mapping of this transmedia reception as it is played out in a North American context in the period from her death and until today, and in part an account of Stein’s particular collaborative poetics, through which her work invites such a reception. Furthermore, the thesis maintains that we in a contemporary context are experiencing a still increasing receptivity towards Stein’s oeuvre, that seems more relevant today than ever before.  These circumstances, the thesis illuminates and discusses via a media theoretical framework, where Stein’s own work, as well as its aesthetic reception is considered as embedded in a complex media ecology. Media ecology is here conceived as a decentralized, networked approach to aesthetic phenomena, which is able to contain many types of agents and materialities. The media ecology of an artwork is thus potentially made up by the entire network of processes, agents and materials that are relevant to its production, distribution and consumption and influences the subject positions available to the individual agents.Through Stein’s aesthetic reception it is possible to catch sight of important components that are active in the media ecology but often neglected or considered subordinated to text-internal features. These include the material interface of the medium in question, the aestheticized persona of the artist and infrastructures such as the salon, which affect how and to whom the work and its meanings are distributed. The thesis also traces a number of parallels between the media situation of Stein in the beginning of the 20th century and the digital media situation at the verge of the 21st that suggest both explanations for and implications of her increasing contemporary relevance.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Nuclear Materials. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-3115 .- 1873-4820. ; 457, s. 291-297
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Iron–Chromium–Aluminium (Fe–Cr–Al) alloys have been widely investigated as candidate materials for various nuclear applications. Albeit the excellent corrosion resistance, conventional Fe–Cr–Al alloys suffer from α–α′ phase separation and embrittlement when subjected to temperatures up to 500 °C, due to their high Cr-content. Low-Cr Fe–Cr–Al alloys are anticipated to be embrittlement resistant and provide adequate oxidation properties, yet long-term aging experiments and simulations are lacking in literature. In this study, Fe–10Cr–(4–8)Al alloys and a Fe–21Cr–5Al were thermally aged in the temperature interval of 450–550 °C for times up to 10,000 h, and the microstructures were evaluated mainly using atom probe tomography. In addition, a Kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) model of the Fe–Cr–Al system was developed. No phase separation was observed in the Fe–10Cr–(4–8)Al alloys, and the developed KMC model yielded results in good agreement with the experimental data.

  • 2016. - 700

  • MODELLING AND TESTING THE CRASH BEHAVIOUR OF COMPOSITE VEHICLES COMPONENTS
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the current contribution we will present the latest developments in the project “Modelling crash behaviour in future lightweight composite vehicles – Step 2”, involving 11 Swedish partners. On the material modelling side, a fully three-dimensional model to describe fibre kinking has recently been developed. The model is physically based and considers the fibre rotation during kink-band formation under large deformations. The FE implementation of the model is straightforward which allows for easy implementation. The validation of the model for stiffness and strength shows good correlation with the experiments. The influence of initial misalignments on the stiffness is well captured, the strength defined at the onset of unstable fibre rotation, is well predicted, and, in addition, the crushing response shows very good agreement with experimental results in terms of morphology in the crushing zone, as well as in the load response. To allow for computational efficiency, we have also developed and implemented (as a user element in LS-DYNA) an adaptive modelling strategy which allows for laminates to be initially modelled with only one element over the thickness. The user element kinematics can be adaptively enriched by introducing new degrees of freedom during the simulation to allow for more accurate stress predictions in critical regions by introducing discrete material interfaces, and for the modelling of delamination crack growth by introducing discrete crack surfaces interconnected with a cohesive zone law. In this work, special care has been taken to develop a robust method for explicit crash analysis. In the element, we also able to consider the correct intralaminar fracture toughness regularisation for various spatial discretisations. To assess and validate the models developed in the project, we have also conducted a series of bending and crushing experiments on component level. Three-point bending tests (in total 45 beams) have been conducted for three different carbon-epoxy material systems (pre-preg and vacuum infused), two different span lengths and two different lay-ups at several impact speeds. Similarly, crushing tests have been conducted for the same material systems by crushing tubes (in total 35 tubes) at various angles, with two different lay-ups and at two different loading speeds (quasi-static and dynamic). We believe that these tests serve as a very strong basis for any crash model validation.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article analyzes how the Norwegian news media framed the terrorist attacks in Oslo and the island of Utöya, which killed 77 mainly young people on 22 July 2011. Did the news media favour or counteract the propaganda of the terrorist? After discussing earlier research about terrorism and media and presenting theories on news framing, results from a content analysis of 924 news articles in two major Norwegian newspapers during the first two weeks after the attacks are analyzed. The coverage of the attacks is found to be very descriptive, focused on the perpetrator as an individual, giving him questionable political exposure and not analyzing reasons and consequences on a political–societal level. The news framing functioned as a way of depoliticizing the terror attacks by portraying the attack as conducted by a lone lunatic in contrast to a politically motivated terrorist linked to right-wing extremism.

    • Objectives Treatment-free remission (TFR) has emerged as a treatment goal in chronic myeloid leukemia in the chronic phase (CML-CP). Attempts to increase proportion of patients achieving TFR include combination of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) and other drugs. Interferon-alpha in addition to TKI has shown promising efficacy but with dose-dependent toxicity and discontinuations. NordCML007 was initiated to study the efficacy and safety of low dose pegylated IFN-alpha (PegIFN-alpha) in combination with dasatinib (DAS) in CML-CP. Methods Forty patients with newly diagnosed CML-CP were given DAS upfront. After month 3 (M3) 15 mu g/wk of PegIFN-alpha was added and increased to 25 mu g/wk from M7 until M15. DAS treatment was continued and adverse events and BCR-ABL1 qRT-PCR values were reported yearly after M24. Results from M1 to M18 have previously been published, and here we present long-term data. Results After 5 years of follow-up, there were no suspected unexpected serious adverse reactions, no increase in serosal effusions, no disease progressions and no CML-related deaths. Rates of MR3.0 (MMR), MR4.0 and MR4.5 were 84.6%, 64.1% and 51.3% respectively at M60, and 95% of patients reached MMR at some point during the study. Conclusion Initial addition of PegIFN-alpha to DAS shows good long-term efficacy without increased toxicity.

  • Treatment-free remission after a second TKI discontinuation attempt in patients with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia re-treated with dasatinib - interim results from the DAstop2 trial.
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Leukemia. - : Springer. - 0887-6924 .- 1476-5551.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) discontinuation in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) has become part of routine care for patients with a sustained deep molecular response (DMR). Approximately 50% experience a molecular relapse upon TKI cessation. Most of them quickly regain DMR upon TKI resumption. Whether these patients can achieve a second treatment-free remission (TFR) remains unclear. DAstop2 (ClinicalTrials.gov ID: NCT03573596) is a prospective study including patients with a failed first TFR attempt re-treated with any TKI for ≥ one year. Upon entering the study, patients received the TKI dasatinib for additional two years. Patients with sustained DMR for ≥1 year qualified for a second TKI stop. Ninety-four patients were included between Oct 2017-Dec 2021. At the time of data analysis, 62 patients had attempted a 2nd stop. After a median follow-up of 27 months from 2nd stop, TFR rates were 61, 56 and 46% at 6, 12 and 24 months respectively. No progression to advanced stage disease was seen and 87% had re-achieved MR4 within a median of 3 months from TKI re-initiation. In summary, we show that a 2nd TFR attempt after dasatinib treatment is safe, feasible and TFR rates seem in the range of those reported in trials of a first TKI stop.

  • RAPPORT GEODATARÅDETS HANDLINGSPLAN 2020 : Aktivitet – 4i, Långsiktig kompetensförsörjning inom geodataområdet
  • 2020

    • In 1964 the electronic music studio EMS, Stockholm opened as a conventional analogue studio. The primary intension with the institution was to build the world’s most advanced hybrid studio and to conduct an international research program into sound and sound perception. With financial support from the Swedish government and by the effort of the studio director Knut Wiggen, these visions were realised in 1970. Meanwhile, many composers did not intend to follow Wiggen’s ambitions visions. Strong wills, social changes and technological challenges trigged countless conflicts and tensions in the milieu.

  • Automated data extraction tool (DET) for external applications in radiotherapy.
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Technical innovations & patient support in radiation oncology. - : Elsevier BV. - 2405-6324. ; 25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Oncological Information Systems (OIS) manage information in radiotherapy (RT) departments. Due to database structure limitations, stored information can rarely be directly used except for vendor-specific purposes. Our aim is to enable the use of such data in various external applications by creating a tool for automatic data extraction, cleaning and formatting. We used OIS data from a nine-linac RT department in Sweden (70weeks, 2015-16). Extracted data included patients' referrals and appointments with details for RT sub-tasks. The data extraction tool to prepare the data for external use was built in C# programming language. It used excel-automation queries to remove unassigned/duplicated values, substitute missing data and perform application-specific calculations. Descriptive statistics were used to verify the output with the manually prepared dataset from the corresponding time period. From the initial raw data, 2030 (51%)/907 (23%) patients had known curative and palliative treatment intent for 84 different cancer diagnoses. After removal of incomplete entries, 373 (10%) patients had unknown treatment intents which were substituted based on the known curative/palliative ratio. Automatically- and manuallyprepared datasets differed<1% for Mould, Treatment planning, Quality assurance and±5% for Fractions and Magnetic resonance imaging with overestimations in 80/140 (57%) entries by the tool.We successfully implemented a software tool to prepare ready-to-use OIS datasets for external applications. Our evaluations showed overall results close to the manually-prepared dataset. The time taken to prepare the dataset using our automated strategy can reduce the time for manual preparation from weeks to seconds.
