  • The use of virtual work for the formfinding of fabric, shell and gridshell structures
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Advances in Architectural Geometry conference 2018. - 9783903015135 ; , s. 286-315
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of the virtual work theorem enables one to derive the equations of static equilibrium of fabric, shell and gridshell structures from the compatibility equations linking the rate of deformation of a surface to variations in its velocity. If the structure is treated as a continuum there is no need to consider its micro-structure provided that the grid is fine compared to the overall geometry. Thus we can include fabrics, ribbed shells, corrugated shells and gridshells with a fine grid, such as the Mannheim Multihalle. The equilibrium equations are almost identical to those obtained by assuming that a shell is thin and of uniform thickness, but are more general in their application. Our formulation introduces the concept of geodesic bending moments which are relevant to gridshell structures with continuous laths. The virtual work theorem is more general than the energy theorems, which it in- cludes as a special case. Hence it can be applied to surfaces which admit some form of potential, including minimal surfaces and hanging fabrics. We can then use the calculus of variations for the minimization of a surface integral to define the form of a structure. Many existing formfinding techniques can be rewritten in this way, but we concen- trate on surfaces which minimize the surface integral of the mean curvature subject to a constraint on the enclosed volume, producing a surface of constant Gaussian curvature. This naturally leads to the more general study of conjugate stress and curvature directions, and hence to quadrilateral mesh gridshells with flat cladding panels and no bending moments in the structural members under own weight.

  • The design , fabrication and assembly of an asymptotic timber gridshell
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IASS Symposium 2019 - 60th Anniversary Symposium of the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures; Structural Membranes 2019 - 9th International Conference on Textile Composites and Inflatable Structures, FORM and FORCE. - 9788412110104 ; , s. 736-743
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes and discuss the design, fabrication and assembly of an asymptotic gridshell built of plywood laths. The overall question concerns how geometry, structural action, and ecient production can interplay and inform spatial design. The environment is a two-day workshop where architects, engineers and researchers with specialization in structural and digital design cooperate with undergraduate students in a compulsory parametric design and digital fabrication course. The gridshell shape is based on an Enneper surface of threefold rotational symmetry with a boundary baseplate inscribed within a circle of 4.5 m in radius. Utilizing the concept of asymptotic curves, which are surface curves whose osculating plane coincides with the tangent plane of the surface, the structure was built using planar straight laths of plywood made using manually operated drills and saws.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inspired by the work and attitudes of architects and engineers like Jorg Schlaich, Renzo Piano, Piero Luigi Nervi, Sverre Fehn, Ted Happold, and environments like ILEK in Stuttgart and ETH in Zurich, a vision of a new kind of architects and engineers arose at Chalmers University of Technology in the early 2000. With support from the university and the branch, a double degree Architecture and Engineering programme was developed. Since the programme started in 2006 it has been a very popular programme, and among all Swedish MSc in Engineering and Master of Architecture programmes it has almost every year been the most difficult programme to get admitted to. The concept of the programme is a 180 ects (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) bachelor's degree, where the fundamentals from the engineering science: mathematics, mechanics, physics and materials, is combined with history of architecture and engineering, artistic explorative courses, and the fundamentals of the architectural design process. After three years the students can choose to continue for a Master of Science in Engineering with different possible directions, from mathematics and data science to industrial ecology, acoustics, management, structural engineering, and building technology, or to continue for a Master of Architecture. For the latter they need 150 etcs minimum in pure architectural design projects. In this paper the basic concepts of the programme, the culture developed around it and the strengths we can experience in the examined students will be discussed and reflected. Today students from the programme can be found at architecture and engineering companies all over the world and are appreciated for their ability to address complex architectural and engineering design issues with attitudes, insights and skills from the both professions.

  • Strukturmekanik & arkitektur Om strukturmekanisk förståelse i gestaltningsprocessen
  • 2005
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Organizing material to produce space and a load-carrying structure are central tasks in the architectural design process. In trying out and examining design ideas, use of language and tools appropriate to the purpose is fundamental. The thesis begins with reflections on the different processes that utilize knowledge of structural mechanics, how that subject is commonly presented, and how the presentation of it is affected by various tacit aims. There are two main tasks of the structural engineer: description and analysis of structural behaviour through mathematical modelling, and evaluation of safety and reliability as expressed in design codes. These tasks are comparedwith those of the architect in developing load-carrying structures that interact in a logical and meaningful way with spatial functions and with the needs and aims of architectural expression. The thesis, which takes as its point of departure Structural Mechanical traditions, considers concepts and approaches that help provide a better qualitative understanding of compound and complex structural behaviour. Alongside the concept of equilibrium, that of stiffness is examined as a means of achieving structural mechanical understanding.A new design conception, that of canonical stiffness, is proposed as a means of gaining insight into the static behaviour of structures, allowing patterns (modes) of deformation for which a structure is weak to be determinedon the basis of the stiffness of its various parts. From these patterns, the static load cases that produce the largest deformations of the structure can also be determined. Computational tools are proposed that can support a dialog between the architect and the engineer at early stages of the design process. Three computer codes ForcePAD, pointSketch and CALFEM are presented and discussed as examples of proposals initiated and/or developed within the spirit of the thesis.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Space Structures. - : SAGE Publications. - 0956-0599 .- 2059-8033. ; 37:2, s. 94-106
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Discontinuities in the Airy stress function for in-plane stress analysis represent forces and moments in connected one-dimensional elements. We expand this representation to curved membrane-action structures, such as shells and cable nets, and graphically visualise the internal stresses and section forces at the boundary necessary for equilibrium. The approach enhances understanding of the interplay between form and forces and can support design decisions related to form-finding and force efficiency. As illustrative examples, the prestressing needed for three existing cable nets is determined, and its influence on the edge-beam bending moment is explored.

  • Should Torroja’s prestressed concrete Alloz aqueduct be thought of as a beam or a shell?
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Engineering Structures. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-7323 .- 0141-0296. ; 264
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the structural action of Eduardo Torroja’s Alloz aqueduct, completed in 1939, to see whether we should think of it as acting as a beam or a shell. This is of interest regarding the Alloz aqueduct itself, but also in the design of similar structures in the future, where we must have a simple conceptual understanding of how we want it to work. We apply two alternative approaches available at that time, before computers. Firstly, the membrane theory of shells, effectively assuming the aqueduct walls are infinitely flexible in bending, and secondly, the Euler–Bernoulli ‘plane sections remain plane’ elementary beam theory. We also review Torroja’s calculations which were based on an elaboration of the Euler–Bernoulli beam theory know as the Griffith–Taylor theory for the bending of cantilevers, although we are uncertain as to why he decided to use the Griffith–Taylor theory for a thin walled structure. Both the membrane shell and Euler–Bernoulli beam theory require a prestress to be applied along the longitudinal edges of the channel. However, the level of prestress in the Alloz aqueduct is consistent with the beam theory, which seams the most appropriate approach. Whether or not a structure of this type acts as a shell depends upon the thickness of the wall. The thinner the wall, the more it act as a shell. The wall thickness of the Alloz aqueduct is sufficient for it to act mainly as a beam.

  • Horizontal support of historic roof structures: Design and structural efficiency
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Architectural Engineering. - 1076-0431. ; 14:1, s. 18-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In historic buildings, a variety of different types of timber roof structures reflecting different building traditions and different ideals for the inner space are found. In Sweden, damage to historic roof structures due to a lack of support for horizontal thrust is common. Knowledge of the relation between structurally efficient horizontal support and the extension of a structure in space is essential for obtaining an adequate understanding of the development of building techniques and for making sound decisions concerning restoration. An approach that involves a classification of horizontal supporting structures, together with a mechanical model that defines and distinguishes between inner and outer support, is introduced, with the aim of offering a tool for comparison of different roof-truss designs with focus on the occupation in space. Comparison of the efficiency of different designs is carried out by comparing horizontal stiffness. Eleven different designs divided into four spatial groups have been analyzed. © 2008 ASCE.

  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Structural analysis of historical constructions: possiblities of numerical and experimental techniques / edited by Claudio Modena, Paulo B. Lourenco, Pere Roca. - 0415363799 ; 2, s. 1429-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Historical timber structures are often complex, their static behaviour being difficult to grasp. Such structures are usually statically indeterminate. To determine how a statically indeterminate structure carries the load it supports, the stiffness of its separate parts needs to be taken into account. Knowledge of the static behaviour and of the factors that influence it is important when investigating the causes of damages. The damage analyses suggested involve several steps. First, a thorough investigation of the structure is needed, aimed at collecting the basic facts required for obtaining sufficient background information for creating the computational model. The next step is to create a computational model based on the Finite Elements Method. Having access to an appropriate computational model allows possible causes of damages to readily be simu-lated. The roof structure of the medieval Swedish castle of Glimmingehus was selected as an example of how such an analysis can be performed.

  • Static Behaviour of a Historic Roof Structure
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Architectural Engineering. - 1076-0431. ; 11:2, s. 39-49
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Historic roof structures of large monumental buildings are often complex with static behavior that is difficult to grasp. Yet, understanding their static behavior is necessary to adequately preserve and maintain them. The aim of this paper is twofold. The more general aim is to develop use of the finite element method in combination with visualization and to demonstrate its potential both for providing an understanding of historic structures and their static behavior and for supporting a dialogue regarding these matters. The more specific aim is to examine the static behavior of one particular roof structure and the damages to it that occurred. The roof structure selected was that of the medieval Swedish castle of Glimmingehus. A detailed computational model of the roof truss was developed, in terms of which a set of possible causes of the damages observed was simulated. Reliable causes were found and three-dimensional visualizations were carried out to demonstrate their respective influence on the overall structural behavior. As expected, use of visualization in the analysis was found to be very helpful for interpreting the relationship between the computational model and the computed results.
