Risk factors for subarachnoid haemorrhage : a nationwide cohort of 950 000 adults

- BACKGROUND: Subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) is a devastating disease, with high mortality rate and substantial disability among survivors. Its causes are poorly understood. We aimed to investigate risk factors for SAH using a novel nationwide cohort consortium.METHODS: We obtained individual participant data of 949 683 persons (330 334 women) between 25 and 90 years old, with no history of SAH at baseline, from 21 population-based cohorts. Outcomes were obtained from the Swedish Patient and Causes of Death Registries.RESULTS: During 13 704 959 person-years of follow-up, 2659 cases of first-ever fatal or non-fatal SAH occurred, with an age-standardized incidence rate of 9.0 [95% confidence interval (CI) (7.4-10.6)/100 000 person-years] in men and 13.8 [(11.4-16.2)/100 000 person-years] in women. The incidence rate increased exponentially with higher age. In multivariable-adjusted Poisson models, marked sex interactions for current smoking and body mass index (BMI) were observed. Current smoking conferred a rate ratio (RR) of 2.24 (95% CI 1.95-2.57) in women and 1.62 (1.47-1.79) in men. One standard deviation higher BMI was associated with an RR of 0.86 (0.81-0.92) in women and 1.02 (0.96-1.08) in men. Higher blood pressure and lower education level were also associated with higher risk of SAH.CONCLUSIONS: The risk of SAH is 45% higher in women than in men, with substantial sex differences in risk factor strengths. In particular, a markedly stronger adverse effect of smoking in women may motivate targeted public health initiatives.

- Björn Skogar (f. 1942) är idéhistoriker, religionsdidaktiker och luthersk teolog. I avhandlingen Viva vox och den akademiska religionen behandlade han det tidiga 1900-talets svenska teologihistoria. Detta arbete har sedan följts upp av fortsatt forskning om teologin och det teologiska språkets möjlighet att tolka livet. Skogar har sedan 1976 varit verksam som lärarutbildare. Han har haft en avgörande roll för utformandet av en religionsvetenskaplig utbildning med didaktisk inriktning samt för skapandet av ett religionsdidaktiskt forskningsnätverk i Sverige. Den genomgående teoretiska grundansatsen i Björns gärning har i första hand varit den filosofiska hermeneutiken. Denna bok är en hyllning till Björn som vän, kollega och samtalspartner. Bidragen är skrivna av tjugosju personer som under olika perioder och i olika sammanhang haft privilegiet att få vara Björns kollegor.

- Like anywhere else, the present-day Islamic world too is grappling with modernity and postmodernity, secularisation and globalisation. Muslims are raising questions about religious representations and authority. This has given rise to the emergence of alternative Islamic discourses which challenge binary oppositions and dichotomies of orthodoxy and heterodoxy, continuity and change, state and civil society. It also leads to a dispersal of authority, a collapse of existing hierarchical structures and gender roles. This book further argues that the centre of gravity of many of these alternative Islamic discourses is shifting from the Arabic-speaking 'heartland' towards the geographical peripheries of the Muslim world and expatriate Muslims in North America and Europe. At the same time, in view of recent seismic shifts in the political constellation of the Middle East, the trends discussed in this book hold important clues for the possible direction of future developments in that volatile part of the Muslim world.

- As in the rest of Europe, the study of Islam and Muslims in Sweden was for a long time primarily the study of Oriental languages, especially Arabic, but also Persian and Turkic languages (i.e. Martin 1995; Nanji 1997). Already in 1624, Arabic is mentioned as one of the languages that the Professor in Hebrew (Hebreae Linguage Professor) was expected to teach at Uppsala University (Malmberg 2007: 19).[1] As pointed out by Håkan Malmberg, Hebrew, and partly also Aramaic and Syriac, were at the forefront, while Arabic was seldom studied neither as a living language nor for its own sake. The Bible and its cultural, linguistic and religious landscapes were the focus. This situation progressively changed, and the Arabic and Turkic languages (including Tataric languages) became essential disciplines for Sweden’s diplomatic contacts with the Tatar Khanates and the Ottoman Empire, as well as gradually becoming important for the general study of Oriental languages (Malmberg 2007; on the importance of Swedish diplomatic relations with the wider Muslim world, see Jarring 1987 and Östlund 2020).

- This volume addresses issues of authority and authenticity related to contemporary interpretations of Islam in a minority setting. Salafism is a contemporary multifaceted and global phenomenon that represents a fundamentalist interpretative stance which appears to be growing among minority Muslims. This book studies a Salafi group in Sweden that is puritan in the sense of avoiding political participation and rejecting jihadism. They strive to imitate the lives of the first generations of Muslims and the prophet Muhammad within their own minority setting, surrounded by a society which in their view is characterized by immorality and capitalism. The group recommends segregation, or even emigration, as a strategy in order to enable people to live proper Muslim lives, in preparation for the Hereafter.

- This chapter will present current variations of Salafism and will probe into various Salafi types. Anawareness of the fact that Salafism is an umbrella designation is necessary in order to avoidgeneralizations. A typology of Salafism it is also heuristically useful when attempting to analyzewhat kind of consequences the various types may have in society (locally and globally), includingon an individual level for adherents to the various Salafi types. Even though Salafi-orientedinterpretations and practices are on the interpretative fringe of Islam, they do have an impact onmany levels in society and deserves the attention of closer scrutiny. It would be a mistake toconsider Salafism a homogeneous phenomenon. Salafism is fragmented and adherents to thevarious types are not in agreement, which becomes apparent when analyzed somewhat closer.However, there are some common aspects that make scholars analytically define certain ideasand movements as Salafi. These common aspects are briefly introduced below and then thechapter proceed into scrutinizing some of the main differences, mainly related to views onviolence.

- The future and relevance of the history of religions discipline in the Swedish context has been discussed lately. This article is a response to this debate from an Islamic studies perspective. The authors argue that the history of religions discipline may become more relevant if a more self-critical approach is adopted, an interdisciplinary attitude upheld, and if there is an openness to learn from other disciplines studying religion such as Islamic studies. Moreover, a reflection on ‘history’ in the history of religions is necessary if elitism and a too narrow definition of the discipline are to be avoided. Furthermore, the article addresses the question as to whether or not scholarly engagement in disseminating findings in public should be an intellectual and moral requirement.

- Islam in the Scandinavian countries—Denmark, Norway, and Sweden—has a long history. There are evidences of contacts between Scandinavia and the Muslim world at least since the Middle Ages. The presence of Muslims in Scandinavia is however of a later date and more established from the 1950s, when immigrants arrived, mainly due to the needs in the labor markets; they successively established congregations and mosques, as they realized that they were to stay in their new countries. Following this period, Muslim migrants have arrived due to geopolitical factors, such as war, which have increased the number of Muslims and their presence and visibility in public space and public debate, which in turn has affected the media image of Islam and Muslims and influenced research. The research on Islam and Muslims has a long history in Scandinavia as well. With the increase of Muslim inhabitants in Scandinavian countries, scholarly interests have also related more to the present and to the study of their own Muslim populations, as well as case studies related to Islamophobia, media images, Muslims in the school systems and labor market, and specific incidents, such as the cartoon crisis and its aftermath.
