  • Prospects for fundamental physics with LISA
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: General Relativity and Gravitation. - : SPRINGER/PLENUM PUBLISHERS. - 0001-7701 .- 1572-9532. ; 52:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this paper, which is of programmatic rather than quantitative nature, we aim to further delineate and sharpen the future potential of the LISA mission in the area of fundamental physics. Given the very broad range of topics that might be relevant to LISA,we present here a sample of what we view as particularly promising fundamental physics directions. We organize these directions through a "science-first" approach that allows us to classify how LISA data can inform theoretical physics in a variety of areas. For each of these theoretical physics classes, we identify the sources that are currently expected to provide the principal contribution to our knowledge, and the areas that need further development. The classification presented here should not be thought of as cast in stone, but rather as a fluid framework that is amenable to change with the flow of new insights in theoretical physics.

  • Coagulase-negative staphylococcal prosthetic valve endocarditis--a contemporary update based on the International Collaboration on Endocarditis: prospective cohort study.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Heart (British Cardiac Society). - : BMJ. - 1468-201X .- 1355-6037. ; 95:7, s. 570-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To describe the contemporary features of coagulase-negative staphylococcal (CoNS) prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE).Observational study of prospectively collected data from a multinational cohort of patients with infective endocarditis. Patients with CoNS PVE were compared to patients with Staphylococcus aureus and viridans streptococcal (VGS) PVE.The International Collaboration on Endocarditis-Prospective Cohort Study (ICE-PCS) is a contemporary cohort of patients with infective endocarditis from 61 centres in 28 countries.Adult patients in the ICE-PCS with definite PVE and no history of injecting drug use from June 2000 to August 2005 were included.None.Heart failure, intracardiac abscess, death.CoNS caused 16% (n = 86) of 537 cases of definite non-injecting drug use-associated PVE. Nearly one-half (n = 33/69, 48%) of patients with CoNS PVE presented between 60 days and 365 days of valve implantation. The rate of intracardiac abscess was significantly higher in patients with CoNS PVE (38%) than in patients with either S aureus (23%, p = 0.03) or VGS (20%, p = 0.05) PVE. The rate of abscess was particularly high in early (50%) and intermediate (52%) CoNS PVE. In-hospital mortality was 24% for CoNS PVE, 36% for S aureus PVE (p = 0.09) and 9.1% for VGS PVE (p = 0.08). Meticillin resistance was present in 68% of CoNS strains.Nearly one-half of CoNS PVE cases occur between 60 days and 365 days of prosthetic valve implantation. CoNS PVE is associated with a high rate of meticillin resistance and significant valvular complications.

  • Preoperative portal vein or portal and hepatic vein embolization: DRAGON collaborative group analysis
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Surgery. - : OXFORD UNIV PRESS. - 0007-1323 .- 1365-2168. ; 108:7, s. 834-842
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Y Background: The extent of liver resection for tumours is limited by the expected functional reserve of the future liver remnant (FRL), so hypertrophy may be induced by portal vein embolization (PVE), taking 6 weeks or longer for growth. This study assessed the hypothesis that simultaneous embolization of portal and hepatic veins (PVE/HVE) accelerates hypertrophy and improves resectability. Methods: All centres of the international DRAGON trials study collaborative were asked to provide data on patients who had PVE/HVE or PVE on 2016-2019 (more than 5 PVE/HVE procedures was a requirement). Liver volumetry was performed using OsiriX MD software. Multivariable analysis was performed for the endpoints of resectability rate, FLR hypertrophy and major complications using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) statistics, regression, and Kaplan-Meier analysis. Results: In total, 39 patients had undergone PVE/HVE and 160 had PVE alone. The PVE/HVE group had better hypertrophy than the PVE group (59 versus 48 per cent respectively; P=0.020) and resectability (90 versus 68 per cent; P=0.007). Major complications (26 versus 34 per cent; P=0.550) and 90-day mortality (3 versus 16 per cent respectively, P = 0.065) were comparable. Multivariable analysis confirmed that these effects were independent of confounders. Conclusion: PVE/HVE achieved better FLR hypertrophy and resectability than PVE in this collaborative experience.

  • Genetics of rheumatoid arthritis contributes to biology and drug discovery
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 506:7488, s. 376-381
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A major challenge in human genetics is to devise a systematic strategy to integrate disease-associated variants with diverse genomic and biological data sets to provide insight into disease pathogenesis and guide drug discovery for complex traits such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA)(1). Here we performed a genome-wide association study meta-analysis in a total of >100,000 subjects of European and Asian ancestries (29,880 RA cases and 73,758 controls), by evaluating similar to 10 million single-nucleotide polymorphisms. We discovered 42 novel RA risk loci at a genome-wide level of significance, bringing the total to 101 (refs 2-4). We devised an in silico pipeline using established bioinformatics methods based on functional annotation(5), cis-acting expression quantitative trait loci(6) and pathway analyses(7-9)-as well as novel methods based on genetic overlap with human primary immunodeficiency, haematological cancer somatic mutations and knockout mouse phenotypes-to identify 98 biological candidate genes at these 101 risk loci. We demonstrate that these genes are the targets of approved therapies for RA, and further suggest that drugs approved for other indications may be repurposed for the treatment of RA. Together, this comprehensive genetic study sheds light on fundamental genes, pathways and cell types that contribute to RA pathogenesis, and provides empirical evidence that the genetics of RA can provide important information for drug discovery.

  • Crowdsourced assessment of common genetic contribution to predicting anti-TNF treatment response in rheumatoid arthritis
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nature communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 7, s. 12460-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) affects millions world-wide. While anti-TNF treatment is widely used to reduce disease progression, treatment fails in ∼one-third of patients. No biomarker currently exists that identifies non-responders before treatment. A rigorous community-based assessment of the utility of SNP data for predicting anti-TNF treatment efficacy in RA patients was performed in the context of a DREAM Challenge (http://www.synapse.org/RA_Challenge). An open challenge framework enabled the comparative evaluation of predictions developed by 73 research groups using the most comprehensive available data and covering a wide range of state-of-the-art modelling methodologies. Despite a significant genetic heritability estimate of treatment non-response trait (h2=0.18, P value=0.02), no significant genetic contribution to prediction accuracy is observed. Results formally confirm the expectations of the rheumatology community that SNP information does not significantly improve predictive performance relative to standard clinical traits, thereby justifying a refocusing of future efforts on collection of other data.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Living Reviews in Relativity. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1433-8351 .- 2367-3613. ; 25:1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) has the potential to reveal wonders about the fundamental theory of nature at play in the extreme gravity regime, where the gravitational interaction is both strong and dynamical. In this white paper, the Fundamental Physics Working Group of the LISA Consortium summarizes the current topics in fundamental physics where LISA observations of gravitational waves can be expected to provide key input. We provide the briefest of reviews to then delineate avenues for future research directions and to discuss connections between this working group, other working groups and the consortium work package teams. These connections must be developed for LISA to live up to its science potential in these areas.

  • Induced spin-polarization of EuS at room temperature in Ni/EuS multilayers
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 104:11, s. 112411-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ni/EuS multilayers with excellent multilayer sequencing are deposited via e-beam evaporation on the native oxide of Si(100) wafers at 4 x 10(-9) millibars. The samples have very small surface and interface roughness and show sharp interfaces. Ni layers are nanocrystalline 4-8 nm thick and EuS layers are 2-4 nm thick and are either amorphous or nanocrystalline. Unlike for Co/EuS multilayers, all Eu ions are in divalent (ferromagnetic) state. We show a direct antiferromagnetic coupling between EuS and Ni layers. At room temperature, the EuS layers are spin-polarized due to the proximity of Ni. Therefore, Ni/EuS is a candidate for room-temperature spintronics applications. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

  • Black holes, gravitational waves and fundamental physics : a roadmap
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Classical and quantum gravity. - : IOP Publishing. - 0264-9381 .- 1361-6382. ; 36:14
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The grand challenges of contemporary fundamental physics dark matter, dark energy, vacuum energy, inflation and early universe cosmology, singularities and the hierarchy problem all involve gravity as a key component. And of all gravitational phenomena, black holes stand out in their elegant simplicity, while harbouring some of the most remarkable predictions of General Relativity: event horizons, singularities and ergoregions. The hitherto invisible landscape of the gravitational Universe is being unveiled before our eyes: the historical direct detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration marks the dawn of a new era of scientific exploration. Gravitational-wave astronomy will allow us to test models of black hole formation, growth and evolution, as well as models of gravitational-wave generation and propagation. It will provide evidence for event horizons and ergoregions, test the theory of General Relativity itself, and may reveal the existence of new fundamental fields. The synthesis of these results has the potential to radically reshape our understanding of the cosmos and of the laws of Nature. The purpose of this work is to present a concise, yet comprehensive overview of the state of the art in the relevant fields of research, summarize important open problems, and lay out a roadmap for future progress. This write-up is an initiative taken within the framework of the European Action on 'Black holes, Gravitational waves and Fundamental Physics'.

  • Direct evidence for significant spin-polarization of EuS in Co/EuS multilayers at room temperature
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 3, s. 1333-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The new era of spintronics promises the development of nanodevices, where the electron spin will be used to store information and charge currents will be replaced by spin currents. For this, ferromagnetic semiconductors at room temperature are needed. We report on significant room-temperature spin polarization of EuS in Co/EuS multilayers recorded by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The films were found to contain a mixture of divalent and trivalent europium, but only Eu++ is responsible for the ferromagnetic behavior of EuS. The magnetic XMCD signal of Eu at room temperature could unambiguously be assigned to magnetic ordering of EuS and was found to be only one order of magnitude smaller than that at 2.5 K. The room temperature magnetic moment of EuS is as large as the one of bulk ferromagnetic Ni. Our findings pave the path for fabrication of room-temperature spintronic devices using spin polarized EuS layers.

  • Magnetic Properties of Textured CoPd Nanocrystalline Thin Films
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. - : American Scientific Publishers. - 1533-4880 .- 1533-4899. ; 12:8, s. 6240-6247
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • CoPd is an important nanomaterial for magnetic and magneto-optic storage of information. In this work, CoPd alloyed thin films are grown via radio frequency magnetron sputtering on silicon, glass and polyimide substrates in a vacuum chamber with base pressure of 5 x 10(-8) mbar. The films are nanocrystalline with grain size between 4 and 80 nm. The magnetic properties of thoroughly textured CoPd alloyed thin films are compared to random polycrystalline ones. Magnetization hysteresis loops recorded under fields up to 12 kOe via a home-made magneto-optic Kerr-effect magnetometer reveal strong tendency for perpendicular magnetic anisotropy for the textured film. This anisotropy leads to the formation of well-defined stripe or labyrinthine ferromagnetic domains with the local spins oriented perpendicular to the film plane. The domain patterns and the hysteresis loops are simulated with micromagnetic calculations. Finally, an induced magnetic moment of 0.44 mu B/atom is measured for Pd via X-ray magnetic circular dichroism and it is separated into spin and orbital magnetic moment contributions.

  • Use of surgery in patients with native valve infective endocarditis: results from the International Collaboration on Endocarditis Merged Database.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: American heart journal. - : Elsevier BV. - 1097-6744 .- 0002-8703. ; 150:5, s. 1092-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Early surgery has been shown to be beneficial for patients with infective endocarditis (IE), yet surgery is not used in most patients. Evidence of the uncertainty around the use of surgery can be found in the wide variations in the use of cardiac surgery in IE with few precise indications for cardiac surgery yet defined. The aim of the study was to characterize patients with native valve IE relative to surgery and to determine if patients who benefit from an early surgical intervention can be identified. METHODS: The International Collaboration on Endocarditis Merged Database was used to quantify the differences between patients with IE receiving medical and surgical intervention in 1516 patients with definite native valve IE. Propensity models were built to identify a group of patients that benefit from early surgery. RESULTS: Patients in the early surgical group were more likely to be male, younger, and with less comorbidities compared with the early medical group (P < .001 for all) and were less likely to have infection with Staphylococcus aureus or viridans group streptococci (P < .05 for all). Intracardiac abscess and heart failure were much more common in the surgical group (P < .001 for all). In an unadjusted comparison, there was no statistically significant survival advantage in the surgical group. However, in the propensity analysis, in the subgroup of patients with the most indications for surgery, there was a significant decrease in mortality associated with early surgery (11.2% vs 38.0%, P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: The benefits of surgery are not seen uniformly in all patients with native valve IE, but are most realized in a targeted population. This observation requires confirmation in other populations of patients with definite IE.

  • The use and effect of surgical therapy for prosthetic valve infective endocarditis: a propensity analysis of a multicenter, international cohort.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: American heart journal. - : Elsevier BV. - 1097-6744 .- 0002-8703. ; 150:5, s. 1086-91
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Although surgical intervention is often used in the treatment of prosthetic valve infective endocarditis (PVIE), an understanding of its effect on survival has been limited by the biases of observational studies and lack of controlled trials. METHODS: The International Collaboration on Endocarditis Merged Database is a large, multicenter, international registry of patients with definite endocarditis by Duke criteria, including 367 patients with PVIE. Clinical, microbiologic, and echocardiographic variables were analyzed to determine those factors associated with the use of surgery for PVIE. Logistic regression analysis was performed to create a propensity model of predictors of surgery use. Patients who underwent surgery during initial hospitalization were matched by propensity score with patients treated with medical therapy alone. Logistic regression analysis was performed to determine variables independently associated with inhospital mortality in this matched subset. RESULTS: Surgical therapy for PVIE was performed in 148 (42%) of 367 patients. Inhospital mortality was similar for patients treated with surgery compared with those treated with medical therapy alone (25.0% vs 23.4%, P = .729). Surgical therapy was independently associated with patient age, microorganism, intracardiac abscess, and congestive heart failure. After adjustment for these determinants, inhospital mortality was predicted by brain embolization (OR 11.12, 95% CI 4.16-29.73) and Staphylococcus aureus infection (OR 3.67, 95% CI 1.29-9.74), with a trend toward benefit for surgery (OR 0.56, 95% CI 0.23-1.36). CONCLUSIONS: Despite the frequent use of surgery for the treatment of PVIE, this condition continues to be associated with a high inhospital mortality rate in the contemporary era. After adjustment for factors related to surgical intervention, brain embolism and S aureus infection were independently associated with inhospital mortality and a trend toward a survival benefit of surgery was evident.

  • Candida infective endocarditis.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: European journal of clinical microbiology & infectious diseases : official publication of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0934-9723. ; 27:7, s. 519-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Candida infective endocarditis (IE) is uncommon but often fatal. Most epidemiologic data are derived from small case series or case reports. This study was conducted to explore the epidemiology, treatment patterns, and outcomes of patients with Candida IE. We compared 33 Candida IE cases to 2,716 patients with non-fungal IE in the International Collaboration on Endocarditis-Prospective Cohort Study (ICE-PCS). Patients were enrolled and the data collected from June 2000 until August 2005. We noted that patients with Candida IE were more likely to have prosthetic valves (p < 0.001), short-term indwelling catheters (p < 0.0001), and have healthcare-associated infections (p < 0.001). The reasons for surgery differed between the two groups: myocardial abscess (46.7% vs. 22.2%, p = 0.026) and persistent positive blood cultures (33.3% vs. 9.9%, p = 0.003) were more common among those with Candida IE. Mortality at discharge was higher in patients with Candida IE (30.3%) when compared to non-fungal cases (17%, p = 0.046). Among Candida patients, mortality was similar in patients who received combination surgical and antifungal therapy versus antifungal therapy alone (33.3% vs. 27.8%, p = 0.26). New antifungal drugs, particularly echinocandins, were used frequently. These multi-center data suggest distinct epidemiologic features of Candida IE when compared to non-fungal cases. Indications for surgical intervention are different and mortality is increased. Newer antifungal treatment options are increasingly used. Large, multi-center studies are needed to help better define Candida IE.

  • High-density genotyping of immune loci in Koreans and Europeans identifies eight new rheumatoid arthritis risk loci
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases. - : BMJ. - 0003-4967 .- 1468-2060. ; 74:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective A highly polygenic aetiology and high degree of allele-sharing between ancestries have been well elucidated in genetic studies of rheumatoid arthritis. Recently, the high-density genotyping array Immunochip for immune disease loci identified 14 new rheumatoid arthritis risk loci among individuals of European ancestry. Here, we aimed to identify new rheumatoid arthritis risk loci using Korean-specific Immunochip data. Methods We analysed Korean rheumatoid arthritis case-control samples using the Immunochip and genome-wide association studies (GWAS) array to search for new risk alleles of rheumatoid arthritis with anticitrullinated peptide antibodies. To increase power, we performed a meta-analysis of Korean data with previously published European Immunochip and GWAS data for a total sample size of 9299 Korean and 45 790 European case-control samples. Results We identified eight new rheumatoid arthritis susceptibility loci (TNFSF4, LBH, EOMES, ETS1-FLI1, COG6, RAD51B, UBASH3A and SYNGR1) that passed a genome-wide significance threshold (p<5x10(-8)), with evidence for three independent risk alleles at 1q25/TNFSF4. The risk alleles from the seven new loci except for the TNFSF4 locus (monomorphic in Koreans), together with risk alleles from previously established RA risk loci, exhibited a high correlation of effect sizes between ancestries. Further, we refined the number of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that represent potentially causal variants through a trans-ethnic comparison of densely genotyped SNPs. Conclusions This study demonstrates the advantage of dense-mapping and trans-ancestral analysis for identification of potentially causal SNPs. In addition, our findings support the importance of T cells in the pathogenesis and the fact of frequent overlap of risk loci among diverse autoimmune diseases.

    • Two xylose-rich hemicellulose fractions were obtained from kenaf wood (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) through a series of sequential extractions which dissociated xylans from other cell wall components. These fractions were subsequently used as substrates for the production of biologically active aldouronic acids. Incubation of the xylans with a family 10 Thermoascus aurantiacus endoxylanase resulted in the isolation of an aldotetrauronic acid as the main acidic oligosaccharide in the hydrolysis products. Enzymic hydrolysis with a family 11 Sporotrichum thermophile endoxylanase instead resulted in the isolation of a aldopentauronic acid as the main acidic oligosaccharide. The identity and purity of both xylans and aldouronic acids were assessed with solid-state FT-IR, solid-state and solution 13C NMR spectroscopy.

  • Layering and temperature-dependent magnetization and anisotropy of naturally produced Ni/NiO multilayers

  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 112:5, s. 053918-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ni/NiO multilayers were grown by magnetron sputtering at room temperature, with the aid of the natural oxidation procedure. That is, at the end of the deposition of each single Ni layer, air is let to flow into the vacuum chamber through a leak valve. Then, a very thin NiO layer (similar to 1.2 nm) is formed. Simulated x-ray reflectivity patterns reveal that layering is excellent for individual Ni-layer thickness larger than 2.5 nm, which is attributed to the intercalation of amorphous NiO between the polycrystalline Ni layers. The magnetization of the films, measured at temperatures 5-300 K, has almost bulk-like value, whereas the films exhibit a trend to perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) with an unusual significant positive interface anisotropy contribution, which presents a weak temperature dependence. The power-law behavior of the multilayers indicates a non-negligible contribution of higher order anisotropies in the uniaxial anisotropy. Bloch-law fittings for the temperature dependence of the magnetization in the spin-wave regime show that the magnetization in the multilayers decreases faster as a function of temperature than the one of bulk Ni. Finally, when the individual Ni-layer thickness decreases below 2 nm, the multilayer stacking vanishes, resulting in a dramatic decrease of the interface magnetic anisotropy and consequently in a decrease of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. • Ingår i: The American journal of medicine. - : Elsevier BV. - 0002-9343. ; 118:7, s. 759-66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: To describe clinical features and outcomes of enterococcal left-sided native valve endocarditis and to compare it to endocarditis caused by other pathogens. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Patients in the International Collaboration on Endocarditis-Merged Database were included if they had left-sided native valve endocarditis. Demographic characteristics, clinical features, and outcomes were analyzed. Multivariable analysis evaluated enterococcus as a predictor of mortality. RESULTS: Of 1285 patients with left-sided native valve endocarditis, 107 had enterococcal endocarditis. Enterococcal endocarditis was most frequently seen in elderly men, frequently involved the aortic valve, tended to produce heart failure rather than embolic events, and had relatively low short-term mortality. Compared to patients with non-enterococcal endocarditis, patients with enterococcal endocarditis had similar rates of nosocomial acquisition, heart failure, embolization, surgery, and mortality. Compared to patients with streptococcal endocarditis, patients with enterococcal endocarditis were more likely to be nosocomially acquired (9 of 59 [15%] vs 2 of 400 [1%]; P <.0001) and have heart failure (49 of 107 [46%] vs 234 of 666 [35%]; P = 0.03). Compared to patients with S. aureus endocarditis, patients with enterococcal endocarditis were less likely to embolize (28 of 107 [26%] vs 155 of 314 [49%]; P <.0001) and less likely to die (12 of 107 [11%] vs 83 of 313 [27%]; P = 0.001). Multivariable analysis of all patients with left-sided native valve endocarditis showed that enterococcal endocarditis was associated with lower mortality (odds ratio [OR] 0.49; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.24 to 0.97). CONCLUSIONS: Enterococcal native valve endocarditis has a distinctive clinical picture with a good prognosis.

  • A Cost-Effective Growth of SiOx Thin Films by Reactive Sputtering : Photoluminescence Tuning
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. - : American Scientific Publishers. - 1533-4880 .- 1533-4899. ; 11:4, s. 3684-3687
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a new cost-effective method to produce substoichiometric SiO2 thin films by means of a simple sputter-coater operated at a base pressure of 1 x 10(-3) mbar. During sputtering air is introduced through a fine valve so that the sputtering gas is a mixture of air/Ar. High-resolution electron microscopy shows the formation of amorphous SiOx thin films for the as-deposited samples. The index x approaches 1 when the ratio of the partial pressure of air/Ar tends to 0.1. On the other hand, pure silica is formed when the ratio of the partial pressure of air/Ar approaches 0.5. The films in the as-deposited state show intense green yellow photoluminescence. This fades away with short annealing under air at 950 degrees C. If on the other hand, prolonged annealing is performed under Argon atmosphere at 1000 degrees C, red-infrared photoluminescence is recorded due to the formation of Si nanocrystals embedded in SiO2. This simple method could be suitable for the production of thin SiOx films with embedded nanocrystals for optoelectronic or photovoltaic applications.

  • Natural Nanomorphous Ni/NiO Magnetic Multilayers : Structure and Magnetism of the High-Ar Pressure Series

    • Natural nanomorphous Ni/NiO multilayers have exhibited interesting magnetic properties, such as an unusual positive surface anisotropy and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Most attention has been paid to multilayers prepared by radio frequency magnetron sputtering under relatively low (3x10(-3) mbar) Ar pressure. Here we report on the correlation between structural and magnetic properties for a new series of multilayers, prepared under relatively high (3x10(-2) mbar) Ar pressure. The crystalline Ni individual layer thickness ranges between 5-8 nm. The amorphous NiO layer thickness is constant, about 1.1 nm thick. X-ray reflectivity showed that in some of the multilayers the high-order Bragg peaks become broader and diminish quickly. Cross-section transmission electron microscopy reveals that this occurs because the first bilayers are formed in accordance to the growth conditions, while the ones near the top are vanished. Despite the deterioration of the interface quality, all samples show tendency for perpendicular magnetic anisotropy even for large bilayer thickness of about 9 nm. Similar tendency is observed even by a 330 nm thick non-multilayered Ni film grown under the same conditions. This observation reveals the important role of strain and magnetoelastic anisotropy as a source of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in the Ni/NiO multilayers.

    • In this work, we present a simple method to fabricate high quality Ni/NiO multilayers with the use of a single magnetron sputtering head. Namely, at the end of the deposition of each single Ni layer, air is let to flow into the vacuum chamber through a leak valve. Then, a very thin NiO layer (similar to 1nm) is formed by natural oxidation. The process is reproducible and the result is the formation of a multilayer with excellent layering. Magnetization hysteresis loops recorded at 5 K and room temperature reveal a tendency for perpendicular magnetic anisotropy as the thickness of the individual Ni layers decreases. It is shown that the Ni/NiO interface has sizeable positive surface/interface anisotropy, i.e. it favors the development of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. This is rather unusual for a Ni-based multilayered system and may render Ni/NiO multilayers useful for magneto-optical recording applications.

    • Ni/NiO multilayers with excellent sequencing are grown via radiofrequency magnetron sputtering with the use of one Ni target and natural oxidation. Ni layers consist of very small Ni nanocrystals interrupted by amorphous NiO layers. When Ni is deposited at 0.3 Pa Ar-pressure, the hard-magnetization axis is the film normal and saturation field decreases by decreasing Ni layer thickness. Considerable positive surface anisotropy is found, which is remarkable for Ni-based multilayers. If Ni is deposited at 3 Pa Ar-pressure, perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is observed at low temperatures even for 5.4 nm thick Ni layers. This anisotropy results in the formation of stripe magnetic domains.

  • Methodological Challenges When Comparing Demographic and Clinical Characteristics of International Observational Registries
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Arthritis Care & Research. - : Wiley. - 2151-464X .- 2151-4658. ; 67:12, s. 1637-1645
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective. Comparisons of data from different registries can be helpful in understanding variations in many aspects of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The study aim was to assess and improve the comparability of demographic, clinical, and comorbidity data from 5 international RA registries. Methods. Using predefined definitions, 2 subsets of patients (main cohort and subcohort) from 5 international observational registries (Consortium of Rheumatology Researchers of North America Registry [CORRONA], the Swedish Rheumatology Quality of Care Register [SRR], the Norfolk Arthritis Register [NOAR], the Institute of Rheumatology Rheumatoid Arthritis cohort [IORRA], and CORRONA International) were evaluated and compared. Patients ages >18 years with RA, and present in or recruited to the registry from January 1, 2000, were included in the main cohort. Patients from the main cohort with positive rheumatoid factor and/or erosive RA who had received >= 1 synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD), and switched to or added another DMARD, were included in the subcohort at time of treatment switch. Results. Age and sex distributions were fairly similar across the registries. The percentage of patients with a high Disease Activity Score in 28 joints score varied between main cohorts (17.5% IORRA, 18.9% CORRONA, 24.7% NOAR, 27.7% CORRONA International, and 36.8% SRR), with IORRA, CORRONA, and CORRONA International including more prevalent cases of RA; the differences were smaller for the subcohort. Prevalence of comorbidities varied across registries (e.g., coronary artery disease ranged from 1.5% in IORRA to 7.9% in SRR), partly due to the way comorbidity data were captured and general cultural differences; the pattern was similar for the subcohorts. Conclusion. Despite different inclusion criteria for the individual RA registries, it is possible to improve the comparability and interpretability of differences across RA registries by applying well-defined cohort definitions.
