  • Autonomic Management of Partitioners for SAMR Grid Hierarchies
  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Parallel structured adaptive mesh refinement methods decrease the execution time and memory usage of partial differential equation solvers by adaptively assigning computational resources to regions with large solution errors. These methods result in a dynamic grid hierarchy. To get good parallel performance, the grid hierarchy is frequently re-partitioned and distributed over the processors. Optimally, the partitioner should minimize all performance-inhibiting factors like load imbalance, communication volumes, synchronization delays, and data migration. No single partitioner performs well for all hierarchies and parallel computers. Because the partitioning conditions change during run-time, dynamically selecting a partitioner is non-trivial. In this thesis, we present the Meta-Partitioner: a partitioning framework that autonomously selects, configures, invokes, and evaluates partitioning algorithms during run-time. For the implementation, we use component-based software-engineering. We predict the performance of the candidate partitioning algorithms with historical performance data for grid hierarchies similar to the current hierarchy. We focus the partitioning effort on the most performance-inhibiting factors — the load imbalance and the synchronization delays. At re-partitioning, a user-specified number of partitioning algorithms is selected and invoked. The performance of each partitioning is evaluated during run-time and the best one is selected. The performance of the selected partitioning algorithms was compared both to the average performance of 768 algorithms and the global minimum at each re-partitioning. The results showed huge improvements both for the load imbalance and the synchronization delays. Compared to the average partitioning, the load imbalance was decreased by 28.2%. The synchronization delays were decreased by 21.5%. Compared to the global optimum, the load imbalance was increased by only 11.5%. For the synchronization delays, the increase was 13.6%. Often, the Meta-Partitioner selected the best algorithm among all candidate algorithms.

  • Anticorrosive evaluation of an environmentally benign chromone-thiazole hybrid with excellent anticancer activity
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Molecular Liquids. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 0167-7322 .- 1873-3166. ; 405
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The research article comprehensively presents salient applications of an environment friendly chromone-thiazole hybrid (CTH) as a potential anticancer molecule and as an organic inhibitor against mild steel (MS) corrosion. The SRB assay used for antiproliferative screening gives excellent IC50 (10.8 μM) against MDA-MB-231 (breast cancer) cell line. Further, CTH has excellent inhibition efficacy (∼97 % at 400 ppm) against MS corrosion in 1 M HCl. The in vitro results of anticancer and anticorrosive evaluation are in good agreement with the computational studies, which include docking, ADME, DFT, MD simulation, and toxicity prediction.

  • On the Role of Performance Interference in Consolidated Environments
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • With the advent of resource shared environments such as the Cloud, virtualization has become the de facto standard for server consolidation. While consolidation improves utilization, it causes performance-interference between Virtual Machines (VMs) from contention in shared resources such as CPU, Last Level Cache (LLC) and memory bandwidth. Over-provisioning resources for performance sensitive applications can guarantee Quality of Service (QoS), however, it results in low machine utilization. Thus, assuring QoS for performance sensitive applications while allowing co-location has been a challenging problem. In this thesis, we identify ways to mitigate performance interference without undue over-provisioning and also point out the need to model and account for performance interference to improve the reliability and accuracy of elastic scaling. The end goal of this research is to leverage on the observations to provide efficient resource management that is both performance and cost aware. Our main contributions are threefold; first, we improve the overall machine utilization by executing best-effort applications along side latency critical applications without violating its performance requirements. Our solution is able to dynamically adapt and leverage on the changing workload/phase behaviour to execute best-effort applications without causing excessive interference on performance; second, we identify that certain performance metrics used for elastic scaling decisions may become unreliable if performance interference is unaccounted. By modelling performance interference, we show that these performance metrics become reliable in a multi-tenant environment; and third, we identify and demonstrate the impact of interference on the accuracy of elastic scaling and propose a solution to significantly minimise performance violations at a reduced cost.

  • Comprehensive investigations of the synergistic effect of chalcone on the anti-corrosion activity of environmentally benign triazole hybrid
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Inorganic Chemistry Communications. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 1387-7003 .- 1879-0259. ; 158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This research article presents a comprehensive investigation into the corrosion inhibition performance of a 1,2,3-triazole-based hybrid (TCA) with incorporated triazole, chalcone, and amide moieties. The amalgamation of these pharmacologically active moieties synergistically enhances the ability of the TCA hybrid to form protective films on metal surfaces. The study employs a combination of experimental and theoretical methods to assess the corrosion inhibition properties. Multiple sophisticated techniques like weight loss, EIS, PDP, SEM, EDX, and UV–Vis spectroscopy reveals TCA's exceptional inhibitory efficiency (∼99 % at 200 ppm) for mild steel (MS). PDP analysis suggests a mixed-type inhibition mechanism. The experimental findings are further supported by the DFT calculations by exploring the interactions between the inhibitor and mild steel (MS). The remarkable corrosion inhibition efficacy of TCA along with its eco-friendly behavior aligns the present work with the growing global emphasis on sustainability.
