  • On Hierarchies and Interdependence in Academia
  • 2010
  • In: Anna Peixoto & Anna-Karin Wyndhamn (2010) “On Hierarchies aSymposia: Gender and Career in Educational Research, NFPF 11-13 March 2010, Malmö Sweden.
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This interview study of a Swedish Faculty of Education investigates the experience of the employees in an organisation with a distinct order of rank. In this faculty the full time researcher (usually a man) is perceived to be higher up in the hierarchy compared to the full time teacher (usually a woman). The feeling of being in a position of dependency to a superior and to owe that person loyalty is another theme expressed during the interviews. According to the informants any possible criticism concerning scientific agenda as well as the spoken and performed attitudes towards employees is silenced by the power relations. As a consequence, gender stereotypical expectations of male and female employees are reported to be left unquestioned during seminars, courses and other work meetings. We discuss how these power relations are given different meanings by the informants. The descriptions given by the PhD students constitute our main interest. We argue that these ranks of power will affect discussions concerning the work place as well as the production of science, and that these discussions entail strong restrictions for what and whom you may criticise. These restrictions may reproduce, rather than change, well known relations of power inside and outside Academia.

  • Effective supervision of doctoral students in public and population health in Africa: CARTA supervisors’ experiences, challenges and perceived opportunities
  • 2022
  • In: Global Public Health. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1744-1692 .- 1744-1706. ; 17:4, s. 496-511
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • © 2020 The Author(s). Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. The quality and success of postgraduate education largely rely on effective supervision. Since its inception in 2008, the Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) has been at the forefront of providing training to both students and supervisors in the field of public and population health. However, there are few studies on supervisors’ perceptions on effective doctoral supervision. We used a mostly descriptive study design to report CARTA-affiliated doctoral supervisors’ reflections and perceptions on doctoral supervision, challenges and opportunities. A total of 77 out of 160 CARTA supervisors’ workshop participants responded to the evaluation. The respondents were affiliated with 10 institutions across Africa. The respondents remarked that effective supervision is a two-way process, involving both supervisor and supervisee’s commitment. Some reported that the requirements for effective supervision included the calibre of the PhD students, structure of the PhD programme, access to research infrastructure and resources, supervision training, multidisciplinary exposure and support. Male supervisors have significantly higher number of self-reported PhD graduates and published articles on Scopus but no difference from the females in h-index. We note both student and systemic challenges that training institutions may pursue to improve doctoral supervision in Africa.

  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This thesis is about the university as a workplace. Essentially, it addresses postgraduate studies, doctoral students’ work conditions, and how these students are schooled to become researchers. The overarching purpose of the thesis is, based on Sweden’s 1998 reform of research education, to study the parameters of PhD students’ working lives, their schooling as budding researchers in various subject areas, and their ways of handling the formal rules and tacit expectations of academia in relation to their own resources and assets. The theoretical framework for the thesis is Bourdieu’s theory of capital and fields. The primary empirical basis is 15 interviews with PhD students in three subject areas, humanities, natural sciences and educational sciences, at the University of Gothenburg. The analysis shows that the parameters of PhD students’ work are characterised both by subject-specific doxa and by the formal rules associated with research education and the doctoral students’ form of employment. The subject areas have diverging outlooks and basic assumptions regarding the aims and purpose of research education. The thesis also shows that politically initiated reforms are being interpreted and reshaped in relation to the values sustained by the scientific field itself. This generates a tension between different logics that are not always mutually compatible. The good intentions of the reform, to clarify research education, have thus rather created further grey areas between official edicts and informal demands. The doctoral students who can navigate among them successfully and, at the same time, stage their researcher role in the desired way, are the ones who are invited into the scientific field. It is they who are seen as the fittest.

  • Graduate studies in transformation: Postgraduate education system for university and society - Implications for scientific development
  • 2008
  • In: the 36th Congress of the Nordic Educational Research Association, March 6 – 8, 2008 in Copenhagen.
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Sessioncode: 4-11-D165 Abstract: The debate concerning the postgraduate system’s role and shape has been vivid. We are once again standing before a thorough transformation of the system. The new framework is constituted by increased demands from trade and industry as well as society as a whole. How can these demands be combined in the same postgraduate education system, and what will the consequences be? With this in mind, the project is aimed at investigating the development of the postgraduate education system since the 1990s. The meeting between different actors, both inside and outside the academic field, constitutes the foundation of the investigation. What strategies are the actors using when encountering one another and which logics can be identified in the different fields? These are central questions that we will try to answer through policy analyses and interviews with both graduate students and representatives from university, society and trade and industry. This study will contribute to a wider understanding of the Swedish postgraduate system and how demands of different actors influence its design.

  • Hiring of Flexible and Fixed-term Workers in Five Norwegian and Swedish Industries
  • 2018
  • In: Nordic Journal of Working Life Studies. - : Det Kgl. Bibliotek/Royal Danish Library. - 2245-0157. ; 8:3
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Analyzing how and why employers use fixed-term contracts or alternative forms of flexible, short- term labor in five labor-intensive industries in Norway and Sweden, the main research question in this article is how employer hiring of temporary labor is affected by differences in national employment regulations and industries. Regarding employer motives, we find strong and similar inter-industry differences across the two countries, while the share of fixed-term employees is generally higher in Sweden than in Norway where regulations are stricter. Further, employers’ hiring of fixed-term labor is contingent on their access to alternative sources of flexible labor when faced with shifting demand, need for substitutes, or complex shift plans. The mix of fixed-term labor, agency workers, and use of extra part-time work also varies across industries, depending on the pattern of production, work organization, and workforce gender profile.

  • Vad är arbetsvetenskap? - En introduktion
  • 2020
  • Editorial collection (other academic/artistic)abstract
