  • Prevalence of Subclinical Coronary Artery Atherosclerosis in the General Population
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Circulation. - Philadelphia : American Heart Association. - 0009-7322 .- 1524-4539. ; 144:12, s. 916-929
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Early detection of coronary atherosclerosis using coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA), in addition to coronary artery calcification (CAC) scoring, may help inform prevention strategies. We used CCTA to determine the prevalence, severity, and characteristics of coronary atherosclerosis and its association with CAC scores in a general population. Methods: We recruited 30 154 randomly invited individuals age 50 to 64 years to SCAPIS (the Swedish Cardiopulmonary Bioimage Study). The study includes individuals without known coronary heart disease (ie, no previous myocardial infarctions or cardiac procedures) and with high-quality results from CCTA and CAC imaging performed using dedicated dual-source CT scanners. Noncontrast images were scored for CAC. CCTA images were visually read and scored for coronary atherosclerosis per segment (defined as no atherosclerosis, 1% to 49% stenosis, or ≥50% stenosis). External validity of prevalence estimates was evaluated using inverse probability for participation weighting and Swedish register data. Results: In total, 25 182 individuals without known coronary heart disease were included (50.6% women). Any CCTA-detected atherosclerosis was found in 42.1%; any significant stenosis (≥50%) in 5.2%; left main, proximal left anterior descending artery, or 3-vessel disease in 1.9%; and any noncalcified plaques in 8.3% of this population. Onset of atherosclerosis was delayed on average by 10 years in women. Atherosclerosis was more prevalent in older individuals and predominantly found in the proximal left anterior descending artery. Prevalence of CCTA-detected atherosclerosis increased with increasing CAC scores. Among those with a CAC score >400, all had atherosclerosis and 45.7% had significant stenosis. In those with 0 CAC, 5.5% had atherosclerosis and 0.4% had significant stenosis. In participants with 0 CAC and intermediate 10-year risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease according to the pooled cohort equation, 9.2% had CCTA-verified atherosclerosis. Prevalence estimates had excellent external validity and changed marginally when adjusted to the age-matched Swedish background population. Conclusions: Using CCTA in a large, random sample of the general population without established disease, we showed that silent coronary atherosclerosis is common in this population. High CAC scores convey a significant probability of substantial stenosis, and 0 CAC does not exclude atherosclerosis, particularly in those at higher baseline risk.

  • Accelerometer derived physical activity and subclinical coronary and carotid atherosclerosis : cross-sectional analyses in 22 703 middle-aged men and women in the SCAPIS study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: BMJ Open. - : BMJ Publishing Group Ltd. - 2044-6055. ; 13:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: The aim included investigation of the associations between sedentary (SED), low-intensity physical activity (LIPA), moderate-to-vigorous intensity PA (MVPA) and the prevalence of subclinical atherosclerosis in both coronaries and carotids and the estimated difference in prevalence by theoretical reallocation of time in different PA behaviours.DESIGN: Cross-sectional.SETTING: Multisite study at university hospitals.PARTICIPANTS: A total of 22 670 participants without cardiovascular disease (51% women, 57.4 years, SD 4.3) from the population-based Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage study were included. SED, LIPA and MVPA were assessed by hip-worn accelerometer.PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOMES: Any and significant subclinical coronary atherosclerosis (CA), Coronary Artery Calcium Score (CACS) and carotid atherosclerosis (CarA) were derived from imaging data from coronary CT angiography and carotid ultrasound.RESULTS: High daily SED (>70% ≈10.5 hours/day) associated with a higher OR 1.44 (95% CI 1.09 to 1.91), for significant CA, and with lower OR 0.77 (95% CI 0.63 to 0.95), for significant CarA. High LIPA (>55% ≈8 hours/day) associated with lower OR for significant CA 0.70 (95% CI 0.51 to 0.96), and CACS, 0.71 (95% CI 0.51 to 0.97), but with higher OR for CarA 1.41 (95% CI 1.12 to 1.76). MVPA above reference level, >2% ≈20 min/day, associated with lower OR for significant CA (OR range 0.61-0.67), CACS (OR range 0.71-0.75) and CarA (OR range 0.72-0.79). Theoretical replacement of 30 min of SED into an equal amount of MVPA associated with lower OR for significant CA, especially in participants with high SED 0.84 (95% CI 0.76 to 0.96) or low MVPA 0.51 (0.36 to 0.73).CONCLUSIONS: MVPA was associated with a lower risk for significant atherosclerosis in both coronaries and carotids, while the association varied in strength and direction for SED and LIPA, respectively. If causal, clinical implications include avoiding high levels of daily SED and low levels of MVPA to reduce the risk of developing significant subclinical atherosclerosis.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Aftonbladet. - : Aftonbladet. ; :2022-12-07

  • Sex differences in prevalence and characteristics of imaging detected atherosclerosis - a population-based study.
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: European heart journal. Cardiovascular Imaging. - 2047-2412.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Men are more likely to suffer a myocardial infarction than women, but population-based studies on sex differences in imaging detected atherosclerosis are lacking. The aims were to assess sex differences in prevalence of imaging detected coronary and carotid atherosclerosis, as well as multivariable adjusted associations between sex and atherosclerosis.Participants aged 50-65, recruited from the general population to the Swedish Cardiopulmonary bioImage Study (SCAPIS), were included in this population-based cross-sectional study. Comprehensive diagnostics, including coronary computed tomography angiography and carotid ultrasound, were performed. The image findings were any coronary atherosclerosis, coronary stenosis ≥50%, segment involvement score (SIS) ≥4, coronary artery calcium score (CACS) ≥100, and any ultrasound-detected carotid plaque. In 25,580 participants (50% women), men had more hypertension (20.3% vs 17.0%), hyperlipidaemia (9.0% vs 5.5%), and diabetes (8.5% vs 4.7%). The prevalence was 56.2% vs 29.5% for any coronary atherosclerosis (p<0.01), 9.0% vs 2.3% for coronary stenosis ≥50% (p<0.01), 20.2% vs 5.3% for SIS≥4 (p<0.01), 18.2% vs 5.6% for CACS≥100 (p<0.01), and 60.9% vs 48.7% for carotid plaque (p<0.01), in men vs women, respectively. Multivariable adjustment only marginally changed these associations: odds ratios [OR] (95% confidence interval [CI]): 2.75 (2.53-2.99) for coronary atherosclerosis, 2.88 (2.40-3.45) for coronary stenosis ≥50%, 3.99 (3.50-4.55) for SIS≥4, 3.29 (2.88-3.75), for CACS≥100, and 1.57 (1.45-1.70) for carotid plaque.Men had higher prevalence of imaging detected carotid and coronary atherosclerosis with prevalence in women aged 65 corresponding to men 10-14 years younger. The associations remained after extensive multivariable adjustment.

  • An Introduction: Tourism, Knowledge and Learning
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Tourism, Knowledge and Learning. - London and New York : Routledge. - 9781003293316 ; , s. 1-8
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this chapter, the editors of the book introduce the reader to learning in a sustainable tourism context. Learning and personal development have emerged as motivations and interests in tourism and travel, in line with societal and market changes. This transformation relates to, for instance, the climate crisis, the Covid-19 pandemic, rapid technological developments, and the fact that travellers are more experienced, knowledgable and aware. Learning and the collaborative production of knowledge is also seen as a necessity for dealing with threats to climate, biodiversity, welfare, security and democracy. The purpose of this book is to explore how tourism, knowledge and learning can be used as means towards sustainable development through current, new or changed structures, concepts, activities and communication efforts. In this first chapter, we also outline the main theoretical concepts of the book, and the conceptual, empirical and methodological contributions of each chapter.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Tourism, Knowledge and Learning. - London and New York : Routledge. - 9781003293316 ; , s. 113-119
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter reconnects to the book’s theoretical starting point: experience-based and transformational learning. We then synthesize the results from the chapters under four themes: from passive to active, from analogue to digital, from generic to target group-adapted, and from fragmented to inclusive. Under each theme, we discuss prospects and limitations and suggest research avenues. As several of the chapters highlight the need to develop how learning experiences are created and organized, we encourage future research to address issues that can inform research and practice about 1) the role of the tourists in creating learning experiences, 2) the impacts of the digital transition, 3) the adaptation of tourism offers to tourists’ prior knowledge and preferences, and 4) the role of collaboration.

  • Science tourism: a conceptual development
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Tourism, Knowledge and Learning Conceptual Development and Case Studies. Edited By: Eva Maria Jernsand, Maria Persson, Erik Lundberg. - London and New York : Routledge. - 9781003293316 ; , s. 26-39
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Science tourism is an activity where people travel to learn about science and gain scientific knowledge and in some cases to participate in scientific research. This chapter provides an expanded conceptualization of science tourism that includes the role of researchers and scientific institutions in co-creating experiences of science tourism. The conceptual model can be used as an analytical lens to understand suppliers’ degree of embeddedness in tourism and science, and how the suppliers, through their activities, make it possible for tourists to immerse themselves in science tourism activities. In addition, the model helps tourism practitioners to strategically position themselves in this growing market.

  • Kunskapsturism som kan utveckla besöksnäringen : #21 NYFIKEN
  • 2022

  • Tourism, Knowledge and Learning
  • 2022
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book contributes to the understanding of how tourism can be designed to provide conditions for learning. This involves learning for tourists, the tourist industry, public authorities and local communities. We explore how tourism, knowledge and learning can be used as means towards sustainable development through current, new or changed structures, concepts, activities and communication efforts. The book should be seen as both an inspiration for tourism actors (e.g. tourism attractions, policy makers and other industry actors). and a scholarly contribution to further research. A holistic approach distinguishes this book from most existing literature that focuses on separate units of tourism, for instance, personal or community well-being, nature-based tourism, cultural heritage tourism, or tourism that is a result of researchers's travels (so called scientific tourism). The various contributors to the book provide a range of perspectives and experiences, from social sciences with a focus on marketing, innovation management, human geography and environmental law, to arts and humanities with a focus on heritage studies, archaeology and photography, and, finally, to natural sciences with a focus on marine sciences.

  • Prevalence of atherosclerosis in individuals with prediabetes and diabetes compared to normoglycaemic individuals-a Swedish population-based study.
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Cardiovascular diabetology. - : BioMed Central (BMC). - 1475-2840. ; 22:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Patients with type 2 diabetes have an increased risk of death and cardiovascular events and people with diabetes or prediabetes have been found to have increased atherosclerotic burden in the coronary and carotid arteries. This study will estimate the cross-sectional prevalence of atherosclerosis in the coronary and carotid arteries in individuals with prediabetes and diabetes, compared with normoglycaemic individuals in a large population-based cohort. The 30,154 study participants, 50-64years, were categorized according to their fasting glycaemic status or self-reported data as normoglycaemic, prediabetes, and previously undetected or known diabetes. Prevalence of affected coronary artery segments, severity of stenosis and coronary artery calcium score (CACS) were determined by coronary computed tomography angiography. Total atherosclerotic burden was assessed in the 11 clinically most relevant segments using the Segment Involvement Score and as the presence of any coronary atherosclerosis. The presence of atherosclerotic plaque in the carotid arteries was determined by ultrasound examination.Study participants with prediabetes (n=4804, 16.0%) or diabetes (n=2282, 7.6%) had greater coronary artery plaque burden, more coronary stenosis and higher CACS than normoglycaemic participants (all, p<0.01). Among male participants with diabetes 35.3% had CACS≥100 compared to 16.1% among normoglycaemic participants. For women, the corresponding figures were 8.9% vs 6.1%. The prevalence of atherosclerosis in the coronary arteries was higher in participants with previously undetected diabetes than prediabetes, but lower than in patients with known diabetes. The prevalence of any plaque in the carotid arteries was higher in participants with prediabetes or diabetes than in normoglycaemic participants. In this large population-based cohort of currently asymptomatic people, the atherosclerotic burden in the coronary and carotid arteries increased with increasing degree of dysglycaemia. The finding that the atherosclerotic burden in the coronary arteries in the undetected diabetes category was midway between the prediabetes category and patients with known diabetes may have implications for screening strategies and tailored prevention interventions for people with dysglycaemia in the future.

  • 2016

  • A Prima Vista – Possibillities and Challenges with Practice-based Research in Music Education
  • 2021
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 2017 the Swedish Government commissioned four Universities to plan and execute a project aiming to develop and test different models for long-term collaboration between Universities and Colleges and heads of Schools concerning practice-based research (Utbildningsdepartementet, 2018). This should be seen in the light of the decree in the Swedish education act from 2010, that declares that the Swedish compulsory school shall be founded in scientific basis and proven experience (SFS 2010:800; Norrestam & Alfredson, 2018).These four Universities became the core of a practice-based test project between Higher Education and School, called ULF (Utbildning, Lärande, Forskning) [in English ELR, Education, Learning, Research]. The four Universities have collaborated with other Universities and Colleges and formed four hubs in the ULF project network. The Royal College of Music (RCM) in Stockholm has been a part of the project through the hub administrated by Uppsala University. The trial period ends in 2021, and throughout the period RCM has been conducting four practice-based research projects where music teachers in the compulsory school have worked together with researchers from the college in pairs and in one case in a trio, researching areas that have been identified by the music teachers as important for them in their daily work. These research areas have been: Leadership in the music-classroom; Interventions for musical knowledge development and participation; Music education and digitalization; and Norm-critical music education.Five music teachers and four researchers together have developed multifaceted knowledge concerning, of course, the research areas of interest, but also about matters concerning arrangements supporting practice-based research. This could be called incidental findings, but we argue that these areas of interest may, in fact be part of the main findings, of the study made by the RCM, as well as of the main project nationally. The results are presented in an anthology called “A Prima Vista” which will be completed in January 2021.In the symposia we would like to present results and further discuss:-  How to define practice-based research? The definition of the term practice-based or practice-conducted research is not an easy on to make?-  The ethical codex for conducting studies that include humans, is in Sweden not updated to adequately meet the special issues that arises when practicing teachers are partaking in research that their head of the school department is engaged in. This concerns i.e., the matter of anonymization and bias.-  How do one practically take on the task of practice-based research? Little is written in Sweden on organizational matters. Our project has shown that issues like schedules, access to resources, and substitute teachers are just a few of many pressing organizational matters.-  Findings from the collaborative part-studies. References Norrestam S. & Alfredsson, S. • Accelerometer derived physical activity patterns in 27.890 middle‐aged adults : The SCAPIS cohort study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0905-7188 .- 1600-0838. ; 32:5, s. 866-880
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study aims to describe accelerometer-assessed physical activity (PA) patterns and fulfillment of PA recommendations in a large sample of middle-aged men and women, and to study differences between subgroups of socio-demographic, socio-economic, and lifestyle-related variables. A total of 27 890 (92.5% of total participants, 52% women, aged 50–64 years) middle-aged men and women with at least four days of valid hip-worn accelerometer data (Actigraph GT3X+, wGT3X+ and wGT3X-BT) from the Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage Study, SCAPIS, were included. In total, 54.5% of daily wear time was spent sedentary, 39.1% in low, 5.4% in moderate, and only 0.1% in vigorous PA. Male sex, higher education, low financial strain, born in Sweden, and sedentary/light working situation were related to higher sedentary time, but also higher levels of vigorous PA. High BMI and having multiple chronic diseases associated strongly with higher sedentary time and less time in all three PA intensities. All-year physically active commuters had an overall more active PA pattern. The proportion fulfilling current PA recommendations varied substantially (1.4% to 92.2%) depending on data handling procedures and definition used. Twenty-eight percent was defined as having an “at-risk” behavior, which included both high sedentary time and low vigorous PA. In this large population-based sample, a majority of time was spent sedentary and only a fraction in vigorous PA, with clinically important variations between subgroups. This study provides important reference material and emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive assessment of all aspects of the individual PA pattern in future research and clinical practice.

  • Ingår i: Thorax. - : BMJ Publishing Group Ltd. - 0040-6376 .- 1468-3296. ; 74:10, s. 958-964
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: Breathlessness is common in the population, especially in women and associated with adverse health outcomes. Obesity (body mass index (BMI) >30 kg/m(2)) is rapidly increasing globally and its impact on breathlessness is unclear. Methods: This population-based study aimed primarily to evaluate the association of current BMI and self-reported change in BMI since age 20 with breathlessness (modified Research Council score >= 1) in the middle-aged population. Secondary aims were to evaluate factors that contribute to breathlessness in obesity, including the interaction with spirometric lung volume and sex. Results: We included 13 437 individuals; mean age 57.5 years; 52.5% women; mean BMI 26.8 (SD 4.3); mean BMI increase since age 20 was 5.0 kg/m(2); and 1283 (9.6%) reported breathlessness. Obesity was strongly associated with increased breathlessness, OR 3.54 (95% CI, 3.03 to 4.13) independent of age, sex, smoking, airflow obstruction, exercise level and the presence of comorbidities. The association between BMI and breathlessness was modified by lung volume; the increase in breathlessness prevalence with higher BMI was steeper for individuals with lower forced vital capacity (FVC). The higher breathlessness prevalence in obese women than men (27.4% vs 12.5%; p<0.001) was related to their lower FVC. Irrespective of current BMI and confounders, individuals who had increased in BMI since age 20 had more breathlessness. Conclusion: Breathlessness is independently associated with obesity and with weight gain in adult life, and the association is stronger for individuals with lower lung volumes.

  • Best practices cases in heritage interpretation: Sweden
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Heritage Interpretation: a Look from Europe. Handbook of Best Practices.. ; , s. 207-219
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Manual of Good Practices in Heritage Interpretation (HI) in the European context offers an innovative approach to interpreters’ training and career, as such studies are very uncommon, due to the dispersion of information on interpretation. It also re- flects on the future of this sector, which is currently on the rise due to the international community's awareness of the importance of socialising heritage. Heritage communities are responsible for preserving and communicating heritage and thus for transmitting common European values related to cultural identity. Interpretation is a profession related directly to heritage awareness and preservation. One of the conclusions is that the profession of heritage interpreter is not fully recog- nised, and its competences are reduced to specific visitor-guide functions. This partial recognition overlooks many fundamental dimensions, as heritage interpreters are fo- cused on education and the transmission of heritage safeguarding values. Full recognition of heritage interpreter as a specific profession would involve understanding the ethics and responsibility of the profession for the preservation of heritage sites and their com- munication to the public, leading, among other things, to a more conscious perception of heritage as a social construction.

  • Biofuels and land use in Sweden: an overview of land-use change effects
  • 2013
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Supported by policies, biofuel production has been continuously increasing worldwide during recent years. However, concerns have been raised that biofuels, often advocated as the future substitute for greenhouse gas (GHG) intensive fossil fuels, may cause negative effects on the climate and the environment. When assessing GHG emissions from biofuels, the production phase of the biofuel crop is essential since this is the phase in which most of the GHG emissions occur during the life cycle of the fuel, often linked to land use and land management. Changes in land use can result from a wide range of anthropogenic activities including agriculture and forestry management, livestock and biofuel production. The report first presents a review of the literature in the different scientific areas related to land use change (LUC) and biofuel production. Knowledge gaps related to LUC is compiled and, a synthesis is developed highlighting major challenges and key findings. Main findings are that (i) deforestation, forest management, and climate change deforestation is a major contributor to GHG emissions and can contribute to soil erosion and carbon stock changes, (ii) albedo changes and the timing of emissions need to be better understood, (iii) to avoid degradation of biodiversity great care must be taken to develop sustainable biofuel production (iv) nutrient leakage and removal of forest residues can influence the biomass growth potential (v) to avoid fertility losses in agricultural soils during biofuel production, crops with low fertilizer needs, high nutrient use efficiency and high yields should be given priority (vi) indirect effects on land use are extremely complex to quantify without great uncertainty (vii) biofuels contribution to rising food prices and poverty even more challenging (viii) biofuel production can create jobs but also interfere with traditional ways of life and recreational values, (ix) to avoid negative effects, biofuel production should be developed in collaboration with the stakeholders involved: farmers, land owners, tourists, and industry. The literature review and synthesis presented in this report shows that land use on this planet is already placing high stress on ecosystems, atmosphere, soils and human life. Because of increased biofuel production, land use change is therefore at risk of aggravating these problems. Conclusions drawn are that the LUC caused by increasing use of biofuels can be negative to various degrees but that drawbacks can be mitigated through policy measures or technology developments. Examples include the cultivation of high-yielding crops, cultivation on abandoned arable land, and effective use of by-products and waste. To explore the opportunities that exist for beneficial land use change, continued responsible and sensitive collaboration between industry, policy-makers, researchers and local communities is a prerequisite.

  • Biocompatibility of a Zr-Based Metallic Glass Enabled by Additive Manufacturing
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Bio Materials. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 2576-6422. ; 5:12, s. 5741-5753
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present work explored the use of the selective laser melting (SLM) technique to develop a Zr-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) and investigate the influence of the process parameters on obtaining different levels of surface roughness. Moreover, the potential of the additively manufactured BMG Zr59.3Cu28.8Al10.4Nb1.5 (trade name AMLOY-ZR01) as an implant material was studied by evaluating the osteoblastic cell response to the alloy and its stability under simulated biological environments. The materials were characterized in terms of degree of crystallinity, surface roughness, and morphology, followed by a systematic investigation of the response of the MC3T3-E1 preosteoblastic cell line to the as-printed samples. The materials supported cell proliferation and differentiation of the preosteoblastic cells, with results comparable to the reference material Ti-6Al-4V. The surface microroughness and surface morphology (porous or groove-type laser tracks) investigated in this study did not have a significant effect on modulating the cell response. Ion release experiments showed a large increase in ion release under inflammatory conditions as compared to regular physiological conditions, which could be attributed to the increased local corrosion under inflammatory conditions. The findings in this work showed that the surface roughness of the additively manufactured BMG AMLOY-ZR01 can be tailored by controlling the laser power applied during the SLM process. The favorable cell response to the as-printed AMLOY-ZR01 represents of a significant advancement of the investigation of additively manufactured BMGs for orthopedic applications, while the results of the ion release study highlights the effect that inflammatory conditions could have on the degradation of the alloy.

  • Obesity is associated with coronary artery stenosis independently of metabolic risk factors : the population-based SCAPIS study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Atherosclerosis. - : Elsevier. - 0021-9150 .- 1879-1484. ; 362, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and aims: Previous studies reported divergent results on whether metabolically healthy obesity is associated with increased coronary artery calcium and carotid plaques. We investigated this in a cross-sectional fashion in a large, well-defined, middle-aged population using coronary CT angiography (CCTA) and carotid ultrasound. Methods: In the SCAPIS study (50–65 years, 51% female), CCTA and carotid artery ultrasound were performed in 23,674 individuals without clinical atherosclerotic disease. These subjects were divided into six groups according to BMI (normal weight, overweight, obese) and the presence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) according to the NCEP consensus criteria. Results: The severity of coronary artery stenosis was increased in individuals with obesity without MetS compared to normal-weight individuals without MetS (OR 1.47, 95%CI 1.34–1.62; p < 0.0001), even after adjusting for non-HDL-cholesterol and several lifestyle factors. Such difference was not observed for the presence of carotid artery plaques (OR 0.94, 95%CI 0.87–1.02; p = 0.11). Obese or overweight individuals without any MetS criteria (except the waist criterion) showed significantly more pronounced stenosis in the coronary arteries as compared to the normal-weight individuals, while one criterion was needed to show increased plaque prevalence in the carotid arteries. High blood pressure was the most important single criterion for increased atherosclerosis in this respect. Conclusions: Individuals with obesity without MetS showed increased severity of coronary artery stenosis, but no increased occurrence of carotid artery plaques compared to normal-weight individuals without MetS, further emphasizing that obesity is not a benign condition even in the absence of MetS.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the great wars, the remains of hundreds of killed soldiers ended up on Swedish territory. They were either sailors, killed in battles at sea and taken by currents to the Swedish coast, or shot down pilots. When discovered, the remains were buried at local cemeteries. During the 1960s a process of re-burial was initiated, and close to 500 bodies was moved to a cemetery at Kviberg in the city of Gothenburg. Two war cemeteries were created, separating German soldiers from soldiers that served in the Commonwealth. In this paper we address the materiality and spatiality of the two war cemeteries in order to understand how these war graves take part in commemoration practices, and also how they create and manifest post-war narratives of the area of the great wars. Starting at the perceived differences in the setting and design of the two cemeteries, we argue that visitors of the war graves encounter a feeling of being close to global historic events. The war graves materialize abstract narratives of great histories at a micro-level in a place far away from the actual conflicts. Simultaneously, the war graves manifest post-war national identities that has very little to do with the individuals buried in the graves or the geographical context of their setting.

    • AM7 BARBED WIRE AND WHITE BUSES. THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATION OF A SECOND WORLD WAR REHABILITATION CAMP IN SWEDEN. 119 ARCHAEOLOGY & MOBILITY Maria Persson HISTORICAL STUDIES, UNIVERSITY OF GOTHENBURG This paper considers the theme of the session from a Swedish perspective. In focus of the paper is an archaeological excavation of a Second World War rehabilitation camp in Sweden. 550 survivors from Nazi concentration camps came to the Skatås Camp in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1945. They were part of a total of 30.000 survivors who came to Sweden during this time, most of them brought to Sweden through the rescue action of “the White Buses”. Skatås was a camp set up for their rehabilitation. An archaeological excavation of the site was conducted in order to recall memories of the camp. Amongst many other finds, a piece of barbed wire was found during the excavation. We learned that it originated from the fence that enclosed the camp. Since the camp was accommodated by survivors of the holocaust this was a controversial find. With the take-off point in this rusty piece of wire it is possible to tell a multifaceted story, concerning Sweden’s stance during World War Two, especially when it comes to refugee politics. The paper also highlights that the construction of camps was not limited to the wartime period. They were also required afterwards for those displaced by war and its aftermath. Furthermore, camps were not limited to the belligerent or occupied countries. They were also to be found in a neutral country like Sweden.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter discusses information panels as a channel for communicating archaeological knowledge to the tourist. Looking back at a hundred-year-old tradition of archaeological information panels, we can see there is a need to develop information panels in order for them to be more engaging and consequently to contribute to experience-based learning for the tourist. The authors put forward the concept of heritage interpretation as a way of producing new insights and ways of working with information panels. The goal of heritage interpretation is to make heritage meaningful and relevant to an audience on a personal and emotional level. This should be done in a way that stimulates them to reflect and to be surprised, provoked and amused. According to the TORE model, successful heritage interpretation should have a clear theme and be well organized, relevant to the audience and enjoyable. The results of our study show that the focus for developing information panels should be on getting familiar with the audience and their prior knowledge, and to abandon the major mission of informing the visitor. To accomplish experience-based learning with information panels as interpretive media, panels should be regarded more as a means of opening doors to experience archaeological heritage.

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Annual Meeting, American Political Science Association, Seattle, September 1-4, 2011.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • How reliable are the measures of political participation used in the major social science surveys? We know that there is considerable variation in estimated levels of political participation in different surveys, but we do not know whether this is due to item constructions, survey mode or the level of non-responses. In this paper, we investigate whether different item constructions affect the estimated levels of reported political participation. We use an embedded web-survey question wording experiment to isolate the effect of item construction. We test three different question wordings with introductions (a) expressing social desirability, (b) normalizing inactivity, and (c) a control group without any introduction to the question in combination with two different sets of response options (with and without face saving options) in a full factorial design, including six treatments in total. In addition, we evaluate which citizens who tend to overreport their level of political participation when different item constructions are applied. Our results show that applying different question introductions do not have any effect on the reported levels of participation. However, including face saving response alternatives considerably decrease reported levels of participation. Moreover, we find no evidence that particular groups tend to overreport their political activity more than others. Rather, respondents who lie about their level of participation can be found among all groups of citizens.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Politics. - : SAGE Publications. - 0263-3957 .- 1467-9256. ; 33:3, s. 172-184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • According to the ‘law of dispersion’, the level of inequality in political participation is higher when voter turnout is low. We empirically test this hypothesis by evaluating levels of voter turnout in the 2010 Swedish election to the Västra Götaland county council and in the 2011 re-election for the same county council. The re-election voter turnout was reduced by almost half, from 80.6 per cent to 44.1 per cent. Our results support the law of dispersion: the level of inequality in participation substantially increased between young and old, rich and poor, low and high educated and politically interested and uninterested.
