  • Ingår i: Experimental Mathematics. - 1944-950X. ; 12:4, s. 441-456
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We show how to find series expansions for pi of the form pi = Sigma(n=0)(infinity) S(n)/((mn)(pn)) a(n), is some polynomial in n (depending on m,p,a). We prove that there exist such expansions for m = 8k, p = 4k, a = (-4)(k), for any k, and give explicit examples for such expansions for small values of m, p and a.

  • Uppdragsarkeologins publika sida. Slättbygdsprojektet
  • 2005

  • Conflict management in student groups - a teacher’s perspective in higher education
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Högre utbildning. - 2000-7558. ; 1:2, s. 111-124
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Students working in groups is a commonly used method of instruction in higher education, popularized by the introduction of problem based learning. As a result, management of small groups of people has become an important skill for teachers. The objective of our study is to investigate why conflicts arise in student groups at the Faculty of Engineering at Lund University and how teachers manage them. We have conducted an exploratory interdepartmental interview study on teachers' views on this matter, interviewing ten university teachers with different levels of seniority. Our results show that conflicts frequently arise in group work, most commonly caused by different levels of ambition among students. We also found that teachers prefer to work proactively against conflicts and stress the student’s responsibility. Finally, we show that teachers at our faculty tend to avoid the more drastic conflict resolution strategies suggested by previous research. The outcome of our study could be used as input to future guidelines on conflict management in student groups.

  • Large-scale topology optimization in 3D using parallel computing
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering. - 0045-7825 .- 1879-2138. ; 190:46-47, s. 6201-6229
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider large-scale topology optimization of elastic continua in 3D using the regularized intermediate density control introduced in [1]. The nested approach is used, i.e., equilibrium is solved at each iteration. To get a high-quality resolution of realistic designs in 3D, problems involving several hundreds of thousand finite elements are solved. In order to deal with problems of this size, parallel computing is used in combination with domain decomposition. The equilibrium equations are solved by a preconditioned conjugate gradient algorithm and the optimization part is solved using sequential convex programming. Several numerical results obtained from computations performed on a Cray parallel computer are presented. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Topology optimization of fluids in Stokes flow
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: International Journal for Numerical Methods in Fluids. - : Wiley. - 0271-2091 .- 1097-0363. ; 41:1, s. 77-107
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider topology optimization of fluids in Stokes flow. The design objective is to minimize a power function, which for the absence of body fluid forces is the dissipated power in the fluid, subject to a fluid volume constraint. A generalized Stokes problem is derived that is used as a base for introducing the design parameterization. Mathematical proofs of existence of optimal solutions and convergence of discretized solutions are given and it is concluded that no regularization of the optimization problem is needed. The discretized state problem is a mixed finite element problem that is solved by a preconditioned conjugate gradient method and the design optimization problem is solved using sequential separable and convex programming. Several numerical examples are presented that illustrate this new methodology and the results are compared to results obtained in the context of shape optimization of fluids. © 2003 John Wiley and Sons, Ltd.

  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering. - 0045-7825 .- 1879-2138. ; 190:37-38, s. 4911-4928
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider topology optimization of elastic continua. The elasticity tensor is assumed to depend linearly on the design function (density) as in the variable thickness sheet problem. In order to get "black-white" design pictures, the intermediate density values are controlled by an explicit constraint. This constraint is regularized by including a compact and linear operator S to guarantee existence of solutions. A proof of convergence of the finite element (FE) discretized optimization problem's solutions to exact ones is also given, so the method is not prone to numerical anomalies such as mesh dependence or checkerboards. The procedure is illustrated in some minimum compliance examples where S is chosen to be a classical convolution-type operator. The FE-discretized optimization problems are solved by sequential convex approximations. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Management of Diastasis of the Rectus Abdominis Muscles : Recommendations for Swedish National Guidelines
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Surgery. - : Sage Publications. - 1457-4969 .- 1799-7267. ; 10:3, s. 452-459
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Diastasis of the rectus abdominis muscle is a common condition. There are no generally accepted criteria for diagnosis or treatment of diastasis of the rectus abdominis muscle, which causes uncertainty for the patient and healthcare providers alike. Methods: The consensus document was created by a group of Swedish surgeons and based on a structured literature review and practical experience. Results: The proposed criteria for diagnosis and treatment of diastasis of the rectus abdominis muscle are as follows: (1) Diastasis diagnosed at clinical examination using a caliper or ruler for measurement. Diagnostic imaging by ultrasound or other imaging modality, should be performed when concurrent umbilical or epigastric hernia or other cause of the patient's symptoms cannot be excluded. (2) Physiotherapy is the firsthand treatment for diastasis of the rectus abdominis muscle. Surgery should only be considered in diastasis of the rectus abdominis muscle patients with functional impairment, and not until the patient has undergone a standardized 6-month abdominal core training program. (3) The largest width of the diastasis should be at least 5 cm before surgical treatment is considered. In case of pronounced abdominal bulging or concomitant ventral hernia, surgery may be considered in patients with a smaller diastasis. (4) When surgery is undertaken, at least 2 years should have elapsed since last childbirth and future pregnancy should not be planned. (5) Plication of the linea alba is the firsthand surgical technique. Other techniques may be used but have not been found superior. Discussion: The level of evidence behind these statements varies, but they are intended to lay down a standard strategy for treatment of diastasis of the rectus abdominis muscle and to enable uniformity of management.

  • Towards explainable motion prediction using heterogeneous graph representations
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Transportation Research, Part C: Emerging Technologies. - : PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD. - 0968-090X .- 1879-2359. ; 157
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Motion prediction systems play a crucial role in enabling autonomous vehicles to navigate safely and efficiently in complex traffic scenarios. Graph Neural Network (GNN)-based approaches have emerged as a promising solution for capturing interactions among dynamic agents and static objects. However, they often lack transparency, interpretability and explainability — qualities that are essential for building trust in autonomous driving systems. In this work, we address this challenge by presenting a comprehensive approach to enhance the explainability of graph-based motion prediction systems. We introduce the Explainable Heterogeneous Graph-based Policy (XHGP) model based on an heterogeneous graph representation of the traffic scene and lane-graph traversals. Distinct from other graph-based models, XHGP leverages object-level and type-level attention mechanisms to learn interaction behaviors, providing information about the importance of agents and interactions in the scene. In addition, capitalizing on XHGP's architecture, we investigate the explanations provided by the GNNExplainer and apply counterfactual reasoning to analyze the sensitivity of the model to modifications of the input data. This includes masking scene elements, altering trajectories, and adding or removing dynamic agents. Our proposal advances towards achieving reliable and explainable motion prediction systems, addressing the concerns of users, developers and regulatory agencies alike. The insights gained from our explainability analysis contribute to a better understanding of the relationships between dynamic and static elements in traffic scenarios, facilitating the interpretation of the results, as well as the correction of possible errors in motion prediction models, and thus contributing to the development of trustworthy motion prediction systems. • Towards trustworthy multi-modal motion prediction: Holistic evaluation and interpretability of outputs
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: CAAI Transactions on Intelligence Technology. - : WILEY. - 2468-6557 .- 2468-2322. ; 9:3, s. 557-572
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Predicting the motion of other road agents enables autonomous vehicles to perform safe and efficient path planning. This task is very complex, as the behaviour of road agents depends on many factors and the number of possible future trajectories can be considerable (multi-modal). Most prior approaches proposed to address multi-modal motion prediction are based on complex machine learning systems that have limited interpretability. Moreover, the metrics used in current benchmarks do not evaluate all aspects of the problem, such as the diversity and admissibility of the output. The authors aim to advance towards the design of trustworthy motion prediction systems, based on some of the requirements for the design of Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence. The focus is on evaluation criteria, robustness, and interpretability of outputs. First, the evaluation metrics are comprehensively analysed, the main gaps of current benchmarks are identified, and a new holistic evaluation framework is proposed. Then, a method for the assessment of spatial and temporal robustness is introduced by simulating noise in the perception system. To enhance the interpretability of the outputs and generate more balanced results in the proposed evaluation framework, an intent prediction layer that can be attached to multi-modal motion prediction models is proposed. The effectiveness of this approach is assessed through a survey that explores different elements in the visualisation of the multi-modal trajectories and intentions. The proposed approach and findings make a significant contribution to the development of trustworthy motion prediction systems for autonomous vehicles, advancing the field towards greater safety and reliability.

  • Evaluation of cost-utility in middle ear implantation in the 'Nordic School' : a multicenter study in Sweden and Norway
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Acta Oto-Laryngologica. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0001-6489 .- 1651-2251. ; 134:1, s. 19-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Conclusion: Hearing restoration using an active middle ear implant (AMEI) is a highly cost-effective treatment for a selected group of patients with no other possibilities for auditory rehabilitation. Objectives: To evaluate the cost-utility of using an AMEI for hearing rehabilitation. Methods: This was a prospective, multicenter, single-subject repeated study in six tertiary referral centers. Twenty-four patients with sensorineural (SNHL), conductive (CHL), and mixed hearing loss (MHL) were implanted with the AMEI Vibrant Soundbridge (R) (VSB) for medical reasons. All patients were previously rehabilitated with conventional hearing aids. Multiple validated quality of life patient questionnaires, Health Utilities Index (HUI 2 and 3), and Glasgow Hearing Aid Benefit Profile (GHABP) were used to determine the utility gain and quality adjusted life years (QALY). Directly related treatment costs for the implantation were calculated and related to utility gain and QALY. Results: The cost/QALY for patients with SNHL was estimated at (sic)7260/QALY, and for patients with C/MHL at (sic)12 503/QALY.

  • Vulnerability Factors of Intimate Partner Violence Among Victims of Partner Only and Generally Violent Perpetrators
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of family Violence. - : Springer. - 0885-7482 .- 1573-2851. ; 39:2, s. 235-245
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine how victims of intimate partner violence (IPV) differ in terms of vulnerability factors and risk of being re-victimized, by comparing victims of the two most consistently identified IPV male perpetrator subtypes: the Partner Only (PO) violent and the Generally Violent (GV).Methods: The current study analyzed IPV reported to the Swedish police and consisted of a sample of 1479 cases of male-to-female perpetrated IPV. The material mainly consisted of IPV risk assessments conducted by the police. Results: The results showed that vulnerability factors were significantly more common among victims of GV perpetrators, including inconsistent attitudes or behaviors, extreme fear of the perpetrator, inadequate support or resources, an unsafe living situation, and health problems. Moreover, victims of GV perpetrators were generally assessed by the police with a significantly higher risk of being re-victimized by IPV. Finally, in relation to the victim vulnerability factors most strongly associated with an elevated assessed risk for IPV re-victimization, the presence of extreme fear of the perpetrator and having an unsafe living situation were significantly related to such outcomes for both groups of victims. Conclusion: In sum, the results of this study contribute to the scant body of knowledge on IPV victim subtypes and their vulnerability profiles. In addition to facilitating the risk assessment of repeated IPV, such knowledge could also indicate what type of support different victim subtypes require in order to prevent IPV.

  • Stochastic structural topology optimization : Existence of solutions and sensitivity analyses
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Zeitschrift für angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik. - : Wiley. - 0044-2267 .- 1521-4001. ; 83:7, s. 479-492
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider structural topology optimization problems including unilateral constraints arising from, for example, non-penetration conditions in contact mechanics or non-compression conditions for elastic ropes. To construct more realistic models and to hedge off possible failures or an inefficient behaviour of optimal structures, we allow parameters (for example, loads) defining the problem to be stochastic. The resulting nonsmooth stochastic optimization problem is an instance of stochastic mathematical programs with equilibrium constraints (SMPEC), or stochastic bilevel programs. The existence as well as the continuity of optimal solutions with respect to the lower bounds on the design variables are established. The question of continuity of the optimal solutions with respect to small changes in the probability measure is analysed. For a subclass of the problems considered the answer is affirmative, thus establishing the robustness of optimal solutions. © 2003 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA.

  • Topology optimization of frame structures with flexible joints
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Structural and multidisciplinary optimization (Print). - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1615-147X .- 1615-1488. ; 25:3, s. 199-214
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A method for structural topology optimization of frame structures with flexible joints is presented. A typical frame structure is a set of beams and joints assembled to carry an applied load. The problem considered in this paper is to find the stiffest frame for a given mass. By introducing design variables for beams and joints, a mass distribution for optimal structural stiffness can be found. Each beam can have several design variables connected to its cross section. One of these is an area-type design variable which is used to represent the global size of the beam. The other design variables are of length ratio type, controlling the cross section of the beam. Joints are flexible elements connecting the beams in the structure. Each joint has stiffness properties and a mass. A framework for modelling these stiffnesses is presented and design variables for joints are introduced. We prove a theorem which can be interpreted as the fact that the removal of structural elements, e.g. joints or beams, can be modelled by a small strictly positive material amount assigned to the element. This is needed for the computations of sensitivities used in the applied gradient based iterative method. Both two and three dimensional problems, as well as multiple load cases and multiple mass constraints, are treated.

  • Multidisciplinary topology optimization solved as a Nash game
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering. - : Wiley. - 0029-5981 .- 1097-0207. ; 61:7, s. 949-963
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the present work, multidisciplinary optimization is formulated in the game theory framework. We choose a coupled heat transfer—thermoelastic system as the case study for which a topology design approach is developed. The multidisciplinary optimization problem is solved as a non-cooperative game and we determine a Nash equilibrium. The game has two players and the parameterization of the design domain is such that the design variables describe the material density and a parameter which influences the heat flow by convection to the surrounding fluid. The first player controls the structure and the second player controls the temperature distribution in the structure. For the second player, we present mathematical proof of existence of a discrete valued optimal solution and it is concluded that no regularization of the suboptimization problem is needed. We present two numerical examples which illustrate the proposed methodology. One of the examples is also solved by weighting the objectives to a scalar valued objective function and the result is compared with the Nash game solution.

  • Topology optimization of flow networks
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering. - 0045-7825 .- 1879-2138. ; 192:35-36, s. 3909-3932
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The field of topology optimization is well developed for load carrying trusses, but so far not for other similar network problems. The present paper is a first study in the direction of topology optimization of flow networks. A linear network flow model based on Hagen-Poiseuille's equation is used. Cross-section areas of pipes are design variables and the objective of the optimization is to minimize a measure, which in special cases represents dissipation or pressure drop, subject to a constraint on the available (generalized) volume. A ground structure approach where cross-section areas may approach zero is used, whereby the optimal topology (and size) of the network is found.A substantial set of examples is presented: Small examples are used to illustrate difficulties related to non-convexity of the optimization problem, larger arterial tree-type networks, with bio-mechanics interpretations, illustrate basic properties of optimal networks, the effect of volume forces is exemplified. We derive optimality conditions which turns out to contain Murray's law, thereby, presenting a new derivation of this well known physiological law. Both our numerical algorithm and the derivation of optimality conditions are based on an e-perturbation where cross-section areas may become small but stay finite. An indication of the correctness of this approach is given by a theorem, the proof of which is presented in an appendix. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    • Images fed to a deep neural network have in general undergone several handcrafted image signal processing (ISP) operations, all of which have been optimized to produce visually pleasing images. In this work, we investigate the hypothesis that the intermediate representation of visually pleasing images is sub-optimal for downstream computer vision tasks compared to the RAW image representation. We suggest that the operations of the ISP instead should be optimized towards the end task, by learning the parameters of the operations jointly during training. We extend previous works on this topic and propose a new learnable operation that enables an object detector to achieve superior performance when compared to both previous works and traditional RGB images. In experiments on the open PASCALRAW dataset, we empirically confirm our hypothesis.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 2023 IEEE/CVF International Conference on Computer Vision Workshops, ICCVW 2023. - : IEEE COMPUTER SOC. ; , s. 4022-4031
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ensembles of independently trained deep neural networks yield uncertainty estimates that rival Bayesian networks in performance. They also offer sizable improvements in terms of predictive performance over single models. However, deep ensembles are not commonly used in environments with limited computational budget - such as autonomous driving - since the complexity grows linearly with the number of ensemble members. An important observation that can be made for robotics applications, such as autonomous driving, is that data is typically sequential. For instance, when an object is to be recognized, an autonomous vehicle typically observes a sequence of images, rather than a single image. This raises the question, could the deep ensemble be spread over time?In this work, we propose and analyze Deep Ensembles Spread Over Time (DESOT). The idea is to apply only a single ensemble member to each data point in the sequence, and fuse the predictions over a sequence of data points. We implement and experiment with DESOT for traffic sign classification, where sequences of tracked image patches are to be classified. We find that DESOT obtains the benefits of deep ensembles, in terms of predictive and uncertainty estimation performance, while avoiding the added computational cost. Moreover, DESOT is simple to implement and does not require sequences during training. Finally, we find that DESOT, like deep ensembles, outperform single models for out-of-distribution detection.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Arrest as a protective intervention among intimate partner violent men
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The literature on the effect of arrest on recidivism among perpetrators of intimate partner violence (IPV) is inconclusive. As such, studies have found that arrest can have a deterrent effect, a provocative effect, or no effect at all. Despite previous recommendations to examine the effect of arrest using IPV perpetrators typologies, only one such previous study has been carried out. In this paper we explore the effect of arrest on recidivism among IPV perpetrators. More specifically, we will present preliminary results pertaining to differences between arrested and non-arrested perpetrators on demographical and offense related variables to discern if, and how, these two groups differ. Furthermore, we will also present the results related to the possibly deterrent effect of arrest on recidivism among partner violent men in general, as well as among subtypes of such men. The sample consisted of 628 male alleged perpetrators reported to the Swedish police for a male-to-female perpetrated act of IPV and subjected to a structured violence risk assessment. The results are discussed in terms of theory and from an IPV risk management perspective, as well as in relation to the RISKSAM model.

  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Criminology. - : Routledge. - 2578-983X .- 2578-9821. ; 21:2, s. 203-222
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aimed to describe and compare arrested and non-arrested male intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetrators, in terms of individual characteristics and variables related to the IPV incident, in a sample of 628 perpetrators reported to the Swedish police. We also explored recidivism rates in relation to arrest within the total sample, as well as among subtypes of partner violent men (i.e. generally violent [GV] and partner only [PO] violent). The perpetrators in this longitudinal study were reported to the police for male-to-female perpetrated IPV and subjected to a structured violencerisk assessment between 2011 and 2014. The results showed that arrested perpetrators were more likely to be reported for severe forms of IPV, being assessed by the police post-arrest with a higher risk for recidivism, and being more likely to be prosecuted for the reported IPV incident. There was also a significant interaction effect between subtypes and arrest for IPV recidivism within 12 months post-arrest. Among those perpetrators who were arrested, GV perpetrators were more than four times as likely as PO violent perpetrators to recidivate in IPV. The results of this study high-light the importance of differentiating between subtypes when examining the impact of sanctions on IPV recidivism

  • Family-only perpetrators of intimate partner violence : A systematic review

  • Ingår i: Trauma, Violence, & Abuse. - : Sage Publications. - 1524-8380 .- 1552-8324. ; 21:2, s. 367-381
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents the first systematic review of family-only intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetrators (as originally proposed by Holtzworth-Munroe & Stuart). The aims of the present review were to summarize and describe the prevalence of the family-only perpetrator subtype, as well as to investigate what characteristics were associated with perpetrators within this subtype. Electronic literature searches in several databases (e.g., PsychINFO, Web of Science, and PubMed) were carried out. Of the 3,434 studies identified, 30 studies met the inclusion criteria as well as the methodological quality criteria. Thematic analyses were conducted, where several themes and subthemes were identified. The proportion of family-only perpetrators, averaged across sample types, was 47.5%. Drawing on the thematic analyses of the reviewed studies, family-only perpetrators presented as a less violent subtype, displaying several pro-social personality traits, as well as a lower degree of psychopathology. The findings were inline with Holtzworth-Munroe and Stuart’s predictions. The findings also demonstrated the utility of a 2-fold typology, consisting of a family-only and a generally violent (GV) subtype, as well as the need to reconsider the one-size-fits-all approach to IPV treatment. We also included a discussion of the terminology of the subtypes and propose an adoption of the terms “partner onlyviolent” and “generally violent” subtypes.

  • Identifying risk for recidivism among partner violent men reported to the Swedish police
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Intimate partner violence (IPV) against women is a global public health issue, where every third woman has experienced such violence. Moreover, IPV recidivism rates are generally high. These figures indicate that the police need a better understanding of the risk factors related to those perpetrators who pose the highest risk of recidivating in IPV. To this end, research has found that IPV perpetrators who are violent towards their partner as well as others (referred to as the antisocial subtype) display more risk factors for IPV than those perpetrators who are violent only against their partner (referred to as the family-only subtype). However, there are still uncertainties whether these two subtypes differ in terms of characteristics related to recidivism (i.e., risk profile) and actual recidivism. Thus, this thesis aimed to examine differences in risk profiles and recidivism rates between the antisocial perpetrators and the family-only perpetrators. This thesis was based on a systematic literature review and three empirical studies. The empirical studies were based on data collected from the Swedish police and consisted of IPV risk assessments. The risk assessments were performed by the police using the Brief Spousal Assault Form for the Evaluation of Risk (B-SAFER). These empirical studies relied on a sample of 657 male perpetrators who had been reported to the police and subjected to a violence risk assessment for allegedly perpetrating IPV against a female partner. The results demonstrated that categorizing partner violent men as either antisocial or family-only can help identify the perpetrators most at risk to recidivate in IPV. As such, the antisocial perpetrators displayed a greater diversity as well as degree of risk factors for IPV, and were more likely to recidivate in IPV, despite legal interventions from the police. In contrast, the family-only perpetrators presented with fewer risk factors, were characterized as socially well-adjusted outside of the relationship, and less likely to recidivate in IPV. However, several family-only perpetrators recidivated in IPV, meaning that such perpetrators should not routinely be dismissed as low-risk perpetrators. In conclusion, the results of this thesis can be used to improve the ability of those assigned to assess risk for future IPV to identify those perpetrators most at risk to recidivate. In turn, this could enable a more informed and adequate response aiming to prevent, or at best reduce, this risk.

  • 2022

  • On continuity of the design-to-state mappings for trusses with variable topology
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Engineering Science. - 0020-7225 .- 1879-2197. ; 39:10, s. 1119-1141
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we investigate the continuity of the mappings which, for a given set of cross-sectional areas of a truss, gives the bar forces and nodal displacements present in equilibrium. We allow the areas to approach and attain zero values, and hence analyse continuity of the state mappings even as the topology is altered. The main results are then applied to optimal design, primarily the stress-constrained minimum weight problem, to illustrate how they can be used to establish existence of solutions and validity of "e-perturbations" that are common in computational topology optimization. © 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd.
