  • Beskriva utan att diskriminera. Representation av könsidentitet och sexuell läggning i Svensk ordbok
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: LexicoNordica 27. - 0805-2735. ; :27, s. 97-115
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of the paper is to present and discuss the treatment of controversial words in the development of a new edition of the Swedish monolingual dictionary Svensk ordbok utgiven av Svenska Akademien (SO), which is expected to be published in 2021. The focus of the article is on the semantic fields of sexual orientation and gender identity, and the challenges met in the process of developing a non-discriminatory and descriptively adequate resource. A more inclusive and updated lemma list is put forward, as well as revisions of definitions and linguistic examples. The article discusses usage labels of negatively charged words and explores the role of links to promote non-discriminatory word choices. Furthermore, methodological questions are raised, and the role of corpora and other sources of data is discussed.

  • Contextual Semantics: Theory and Phenomena
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Filosofidagarna (Swedish Philosophy Conference). 12-14 juni 2015, Linköping.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The truth-conditional frameworks loosely called `indexicalism’ and `contextualism’ have yielded much attention, but there is no consensus about how to theoretically handle semantically context-sensitive language. A presupposition in the debate on contextual semantics is that only one of these frameworks could be correct. The thesis of this talk will be that there are central linguistic examples, where the phenomena are underdetermined with respect to the different theoretical choices exhibited by these frameworks.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: PhiLang2013. Third international conference on philosophy of language and linguistics. Lodz, Poland, 9-11 May 2013. Book of abstracts. Ed. byWiktor Pskit & Ryszard Rasiński. - 9788375258448
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The use of locutions such that ‘said that’ in arguments for contextualism has been criticised. Cappelen & Lepore (2005) argue that there is not a single proposition that captures what a speaker said by an utterance of a sentence in a given context of utterance. The truth of an indirect report, where the verb ‘say’ is used, is dependent on facts about the context of the report, and there is an indefinite number of true reports of a given utterance of a sentence (in a given context). In this talk, I will discuss the epistemology of arguments for explicatures (Hall & Carston 2012). I will argue that the paradigmatic form of arguments for the existence of explicatures is warranted, if we think of such arguments as evaluations of counterfactuals, in the sense of Williamson (2008). The counterfactuals should not, however, contain the verb ‘say’, but they should contain the Davidsonian notion of ‘the attitude of holding a sentence true (at a time)’ (Davidson 1974).

  • Indexicalism, Contextualism and Underdetermination
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: XXIV SIUCC - 2015. Jason Stanley: Knowledge, Language and Ideology. University of Valladolid, October 29-31.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Indexicalism, a view pursued by Stanley (2000) and Szabó (2001), holds that contextual effects on truth-conditions could be traced to covert expressions in the logical form of sentences. Contextualism denies that there are covert functions or variables in the logical form of natural language sentences or assumes that covert linguistic material is rather an exception than a rule (Pagin, 2005; Pagin & Pelletier, 2006; Recanati, 2010, 2004). I will argue that there are several central linguistic examples, where both frameworks could account for the relevant data. The conclusion is that the data underdetermines the choice of theoretical formalism, in these cases. The aim is to make plausible the conclusion that this result generalizes to all linguistic phenomena. We end the talk by some remarks on questions associated with indexicalism and contextualism that concern the nature of the process that leads to the hearer’s uptake of the statement made by the speaker in situations of communication.

  • Linguistic intuitions as sharpened judgments and conditional assessments. A note on evidence in contextual semantics.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 3rd WFAP Graduate Conference: We need to talk. Language and Philosophical Method. Organised by the Vienna Forum for Analytic Philosophy. May 22-24, 2014. Vienna..
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Cappelen’s Philosophy without intuitions (Cappelen, 2012) challenges the widespread conception of philosophy as an intuition-driven discipline. Drawing on case studies of philosophical texts, Cappelen argues that in-depth studies of contemporary philosophical practices do not warrant that description. In this talk, we pursue Cappelen's question, and show some results from a methodological survey of philosophical texts. But we have a narrower focus than Cappelen: our study concerns the role of intuitions in semantics and pragmatics. More specifically, we focus on some central contributions to the discussion of the semantics/pragmatics interface (e.g. Stanley & Szabó 2000; Recanati 2010).

  • Semantic change in Swedish – from a lexicographic perspective
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Computational approaches to semantic change. Eds.: Nina Tahmasebi, Lars Borin, Adam Jatowt, Yang Xu & Simon Hengchen. - Berlin : Language Science Press. - 9783985540082 ; , s. 149-167
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this chapter, we examine semantic change in the general vocabulary of present-day Swedish and its lexicographic description. We discuss the question of whether automatic and semi-automatic methods of computational linguistics are relevant to lexicography and conclude that such methods can facilitate, formalize, and sharpen lexicographic investigations of semantic change.

  • The present perfect, context dependence, and event semantics
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Filosofidagarna/The Swedish Congress of Philosophy, Umeå, Sweden, June 14–16, 2019.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Consider the following sentence: (1) IFK Norrköping has won Allsvenskan. An utterance of (1) can have at least two readings. First, the intuitive truth conditions can be that IFK Norrköping won Allsvenskan at some point in the past. On this reading, the utterance is true if uttered in 2018, since the team won Allsvenskan in 2015. Secondly, (1) can have the reading that IFK Norrköping is the winner of the year when the utterance is made. If it is supposed that the utterance is made after the last match in 2018, (1) is false, on this second reading. In this talk, I present a novel approach to the present perfect in English, focusing on (1). The account combines Reichenbach’s treatment of tense with the approach to the present perfect in terms of result states, associated with e.g. Jespersen. The proposal is formulated within the model-theoretic framework of event semantics, which is intended to account for various phenomena of semantic context dependence. I begin by outlining the framework of event semantics and the implementation of Reichenbach’s and Jespersen’s approach to tense and the present perfect within that set-up. A crucial idea put forward in the talk is that present perfect sentences contain indexical expressions referring to speech events and contextually salient events. The notion of indexical expressions, well known from the work of Kaplan, is thereby shown to be relevant to this particular linguistic phenomenon. The talk is ended by a comparison to alternative accounts of sentences like (1), in terms of conventional implicature. I conclude that my suggestion is a viable and empiricially supported alternative to such approaches.

  • To discriminate between discrimination and inclusion: a lexicographer’s dilemma
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Euralex2020. Proceedings Book, volume 1. 7-11 September 2021. Zoe Gavriilidou, Maria Mitsiaki and Asimakis Fliatouras (eds.).. - : European Association for Lexicography. - 2521-7100. - 9786188513815
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The overall theme of this paper is the balance between descriptive adequacy and discrimination in dictionaries. More specifically, the purpose is to describe the process of revising dictionary articles related to the grounds of discrimination in the forthcoming edition of the Swedish monolingual dictionary Svensk ordbok utgiven av Svenska Akademien [The Contemporary Dictionary of the Swedish Academy], which is expected to be published in 2020. The focus of the article is on the semantic fields related to sex, transgender identity or expression, ethnicity, religion or other belief, disability, sexual orientation and age. Updates of the lemma list, based on a more diverse data set, are presented. Furthermore, revisions of definitions and linguistic examples, motivated by the new data and principles of inclusion, are shown. We also discuss usage labels of negatively charged words and explore cross-references and their role in facilitating non-discriminatory word choices. Moreover, methodological questions are raised, and the role of corpora and other data gathering methods are considered.
