  • SIGNALS : I. Survey description
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 489:4, s. 5530-5546

    • SIGNALS, the Star formation, Ionized Gas, and Nebular Abundances Legacy Survey, is a large observing programme designed to investigate massive star formation and HII regions in a sample of local extended galaxies. The programme will use the imaging Fourier transform spectrograph SITELLE at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Over 355 h (54.7 nights) have been allocated beginning in fall 2018 for eight consecutive semesters. Once completed, SIGNALS will provide a statistically reliable laboratory to investigate massive star formation, including over 50 000 resolved HII regions: the largest, most complete, and homogeneous data base of spectroscopically and spatially resolved extragalactic HII regions ever assembled. For each field observed, three datacubes covering the spectral bands of the filters SN1 (363386 nm), SN2 (482-513 nm), and SN3 (647-685 nm) are gathered. The spectral resolution selected for each spectral band is 1000, 1000, and 5000, respectively. As defined, the project sample will facilitate the study of small-scale nebular physics and many other phenomena linked to star formation at a mean spatial resolution of similar to 20 pc. This survey also has considerable legacy value for additional topics, including planetary nebulae, diffuse ionized gas, and supernova remnants. The purpose of this paper is to present a general outlook of the survey, notably the observing strategy, galaxy sample, and science requirements.

  • Measurement of antiproton production from antihyperon decays in pHe collisions at √ˆšsNN=110 GeV
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. - : SPRINGER. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The interpretation of cosmic antiproton flux measurements from space-borne experiments is currently limited by the knowledge of the antiproton production cross-section in collisions between primary cosmic rays and the interstellar medium. Using collisions of protons with an energy of 6.5 TeV incident on helium nuclei at rest in the proximity of the interaction region of the LHCb experiment, the ratio of antiprotons originating from antihyperon decays to prompt production is measured for antiproton momenta between 12 and 110 GeV/c. The dominant antihyperon contribution, namely (Lambda) over bar -> (p) over bar pi(+) decays from promptly produced (Lambda) over bar particles, is also exclusively measured. The results complement the measurement of prompt antiproton production obtained from the same data sample. At the energy scale of this measurement, the antihyperon contributions to antiproton production are observed to be significantly larger than predictions of commonly used hadronic production models.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 131:15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The branching fraction of the rare decay Lambda(0 )(b)-> Lambda(1520)mu(+)mu(-) is measured for the first time, in the squared dimuon mass intervals q(2), excluding the J/psi and psi(2S) regions. The data sample analyzed was collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb(-1). The result in the highest q(2) interval, q(2) > 15.0 GeV2/c(4), where theoretical predictions have the smallest model dependence, agrees with the predictions.

  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2470-0010 .- 2470-0029. ; 108:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A measurement of charm mixing and CP-violating parameters is reported, using B over bar -> D0(-> K0S pi+pi-)x mu- nu over bar mu X decays reconstructed in proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment during the years 2016 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb-1. The measured mixing and CP-violating parameters are xCP = [4.29 1 1.48(stat) 1 0.26(syst)] x 10-3, yCP = [12.61 1 3.12(stat) 1 0.83(syst)] x 10-3, Ax = [-0.77 1 0.93(stat) 1 0.28(syst)] x 10-3, Ay = [3.01 1 1.92(stat) 1 0.26(syst)] x 10-3. The results are complementary to and consistent with previous measurements. A combination with the recent LHCb analysis of D*+ -> D0(-> K0S pi+ pi-)pi+ decays is reported.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A search for the rare decays W+ -> D-s(+)gamma and Z -> D-0 gamma and is performed using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0fb(-1). No significant signal is observed for either decay mode and upper limits on their branching fractions are set using W+ -> mu(+)nu and Z ->mu(+)mu(-)decays as normalization channels. The upper limits are and at 95% confidence level for W+ -> D-s(+)gamma and Z -> D-0 gamma the and decay modes, respectively. This is the first reported search for Z -> D-0 gamma the decay, while the upper limit on the Z -> D-0 gamma branching fraction improves upon the previous best limit.

  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Four decay modes of the B-c(+) meson into a J/psi meson and multiple charged kaons or pions are studied using proton-proton collision data, collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb(-1). The decay B-c(+) -> J/psi K+ K- pi(+)pi(+)pi(-) is observed for the first time, and evidence for the B-c(+) -> J/psi 4 pi(+)3 pi(-) decay is found. The decay B-c(+) -> J/psi 3 pi(+)2 pi(-) is observed and the previous observation of the B-c(+) -> psi(2S)pi(+)pi(+)pi(-) decay is confirmed using the psi(2S) -> J/psi pi(+)pi(-) decay mode. Ratios of the branching fractions of these four B-c(+) decay channels are measured.

  • Study of charmonium decays to KS0KÏ€ in the B → (KS0KÏ€)K channels
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - : American Physical Society. - 2470-0010 .- 2470-0029. ; 108:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A study of the B+ -> (KSK+)-K-0 K-pi(+) and B+ -> (KSK+K+)-K-0 pi(-) decays is performed using proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV at the LHCb experiment. The (KSK)-K-0 pi invariant mass spectra from both decay modes reveal a rich content of charmonium resonances. New precise measurements of the eta(c) and eta(c)(2S) resonance parameters are performed and branching fraction measurements are obtained for B+ decays to eta(c), J/psi, eta(c)(2S) and chi(c1) resonances. In particular, the first observation and branching fraction measurement of B+ -> chi K-c0(0)pi(+) is reported as well as first measurements of the B+ -> (KK+K-)-K-0 pi(+) and B+ -> (KK+K+)-K-0 pi(-) branching fractions. Dalitz plot analyses of eta(c) -> (KSK)-K-0 pi and eta(c)(2S) -> (KSK)-K-0 pi decays are performed. A new measurement of the amplitude and phase of the K pi S-wave as functions of the K pi mass is performed, together with measurements of the K-0*(1430), K-0*(1950) and a(0)(1700) parameters. Finally, the branching fractions of chi(c1) decays to K* resonances are also measured.

  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - : American Physical Society. - 2470-0010 .- 2470-0029. ; 108:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The decay B- -> Lambda(+)(c)(Lambda) over bar K--(c)- is studied in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of root s = 13 TeV using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 fb(-1) collected by the LHCb experiment. In the Lambda K-+(c)- system, the Xi(c)(2930)(0) state observed at the BABAR and Belle experiments is resolved into two narrower states, Xi(c)(2923)(0) and Xi(c)(2939)(0), whose masses and widths are measured to be m(Xi(c)(2930)(0) = 2924.5 +/- 0.4 +/- 1.1 Mev, m Xi(c)(2930)(0)) = 2938.5 +/- 0.9 +/- 2.3 Mev, Gamma(Xi(c)(2930)(0)) = 4.8 +/- 0.9 +/- 1.5 MeV, Gamma(Xi(c)(2930)(0) - 11.0 +/- 1.9 +/- 7.5 MeV, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The results are consistent with a previous LHCb measurement using a prompt Lambda K-+(c)- sample. Evidence of a new Xi(c)(2930)(0) state is found with a local significance of 3.8 sigma, whose mass and width are measured to be 2881.8 +/- 3.1 +/- 8.5 MeV and 12.4 +/- 5.3 +/- 5.8 MeV, respectively. In addition, evidence of a new decay mode Xi(c)(2930)(0) -> Lambda K-+(c) is found with a significance of 3.7 sigma. The relative branching fraction of B- -> Lambda(+)(c)(Lambda) over bar K--(c)- with respect to the B- -> D+D-K- decay is measured to be 2.36 +/- 0.11 +/- 0.22 +/- 0.25, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third originates from the branching fractions of charm hadron decays.

  • Electron Dynamics in the Core-Excited CS2 Molecule Revealed through Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering Spectroscopy
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physical Review X. - 2160-3308. ; 5:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an experimental and theoretical study of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) in the carbon disulphide CS 2 molecule near the sulfur K-absorption edge. We observe a strong evolution of the RIXS spectral profile with the excitation energy tuned below the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) absorption resonance. The reason for this is twofold. Reducing the photon energy in the vicinity of the LUMO absorption resonance leads to a relative suppression of the LUMO contribution with respect to the emission signal from the higher unoccupied molecular orbitals, which results in the modulation of the total RIXS profile. At even larger negative photon-energy detuning from the resonance, the excitation-energy dependence of the RIXS profile is dominated by the onset of electron dynamics triggered by a coherent excitation of multiple electronic states. Furthermore, our study demonstrates that in the hard x-ray regime, localization of the S 1s core hole occurs in CS2 during the RIXS process because of the orientational dephasing of interference between the waves scattering on the two sulfur atoms. Core-hole localization leads to violation of the symmetry selection rules for the electron transitions observed in the spectra.

  • Investigation of Paraoxonase-1 Genotype and Enzyme-Kinetic Parameters in the Context of Cognitive Impairment in Parkinson's Disease
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Antioxidants (Basel, Switzerland). - : MDPI AG. - 2076-3921. ; 12:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cognitive impairment is a common non-motor symptom of Parkinson’s disease (PD), which often progresses to PD dementia. PD patients with and without dementia may differ in certain biochemical parameters, which could thus be used as biomarkers for PD dementia. The enzyme paraoxonase 1 (PON1) has previously been investigated as a potential biomarker in the context of other types of dementia. In a cohort of PD patients, we compared a group of 89 patients with cognitive impairment with a group of 118 patients with normal cognition. We determined the kinetic parameters Km and Vmax for PON1 for the reaction with dihydrocoumarin and the genotype of four single nucleotide polymorphisms in PON1. We found that no genotype or kinetic parameter correlated significantly with cognitive impairment in PD patients. However, we observed associations between PON1 rs662 and PON1 Km (p < 10−10), between PON1 rs662 and PON1 Vmax (p = 9.33 × 10−7), and between PON1 rs705379 and PON1 Vmax (p = 2.21 × 10−10). The present study is novel in three main aspects. (1) It is the first study to investigate associations between the PON1 genotype and enzyme kinetics in a large number of subjects. (2) It is the first study to report kinetic parameters of PON1 in a large number of subjects and to use time-concentration progress curves instead of initial velocities to determine Km and Vmax in a clinical context. (3) It is also the first study to calculate enzyme-kinetic parameters in a clinical context with a new algorithm for data point removal from progress curves, dubbed iFIT. Although our results suggest that in the context of PD, there is no clinically useful correlation between cognitive status on the one hand and PON1 genetic and enzyme-kinetic parameters on the other hand, this should not discourage future investigation into PON1’s potential associations with other types of dementia.

  • JWST PEARLS. Prime extragalactic areas for reionization and lensing science : project overview and first results
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astronomical Journal. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 0004-6256 .- 1538-3881. ; 165:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We give an overview and describe the rationale, methods, and first results from NIRCam images of the JWST “Prime Extragalactic Areas for Reionization and Lensing Science” (PEARLS) project. PEARLS uses up to eight NIRCam filters to survey several prime extragalactic survey areas: two fields at the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP); seven gravitationally lensing clusters; two high redshift protoclusters; and the iconic backlit VV 191 galaxy system to map its dust attenuation. PEARLS also includes NIRISS spectra for one of the NEP fields and NIRSpec spectra of two high-redshift quasars. The main goal of PEARLS is to study the epoch of galaxy assembly, active galactic nucleus (AGN) growth, and First Light. Five fields—the JWST NEP Time-Domain Field (TDF), IRAC Dark Field, and three lensing clusters—will be observed in up to four epochs over a year. The cadence and sensitivity of the imaging data are ideally suited to find faint variable objects such as weak AGN, high-redshift supernovae, and cluster caustic transits. Both NEP fields have sightlines through our Galaxy, providing significant numbers of very faint brown dwarfs whose proper motions can be studied. Observations from the first spoke in the NEP TDF are public. This paper presents our first PEARLS observations, their NIRCam data reduction and analysis, our first object catalogs, the 0.9–4.5 μm galaxy counts and Integrated Galaxy Light. We assess the JWST sky brightness in 13 NIRCam filters, yielding our first constraints to diffuse light at 0.9–4.5 μm. PEARLS is designed to be of lasting benefit to the community.

  • Role of Brachytherapy in the Postoperative Management of Endometrial Cancer : Decision-Making Analysis among Experienced European Radiation Oncologists
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Cancers. - : MDPI. - 2072-6694. ; 14:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: There are various society-specific guidelines addressing adjuvant brachytherapy (BT) after surgery for endometrial cancer (EC). However, these recommendations are not uniform. Against this background, clinicians need to make decisions despite gaps between best scientific evidence and clinical practice. We explored factors influencing decision-making for adjuvant BT in clinical routine among experienced European radiation oncologists in the field of gynaecological radiotherapy (RT). We also investigated the dose and technique of BT.METHODS: Nineteen European experts for gynaecological BT selected by the Groupe Européen de Curiethérapie and the European Society for Radiotherapy & Oncology provided their decision criteria and technique for postoperative RT in EC. The decision criteria were captured and converted into decision trees, and consensus and dissent were evaluated based on the objective consensus methodology.RESULTS: The decision criteria used by the experts were tumour extension, grading, nodal status, lymphovascular invasion, and cervical stroma/vaginal invasion (yes/no). No expert recommended adjuvant BT for pT1a G1-2 EC without substantial LVSI. Eighty-four percent of experts recommended BT for pT1a G3 EC without substantial LVSI. Up to 74% of experts used adjuvant BT for pT1b LVSI-negative and pT2 G1-2 LVSI-negative disease. For 74-84% of experts, EBRT + BT was the treatment of choice for nodal-positive pT2 disease and for pT3 EC with cervical/vaginal invasion. For all other tumour stages, there was no clear consensus for adjuvant treatment. Four experts already used molecular markers for decision-making. Sixty-five percent of experts recommended fractionation regimens of 3 × 7 Gy or 4 × 5 Gy for BT as monotherapy and 2 × 5 Gy for combination with EBRT. The most commonly used applicator for BT was a vaginal cylinder; 82% recommended image-guided BT.CONCLUSIONS: There was a clear trend towards adjuvant BT for stage IA G3, stage IB, and stage II G1-2 LVSI-negative EC. Likewise, there was a non-uniform pattern for BT dose prescription but a clear trend towards 3D image-based BT. Finally, molecular characteristics were already used in daily decision-making by some experts under the pretext that upcoming trials will bring more clarity to this topic.

  • Effect of differentiation, de novo innervation, and electrical pulse stimulation on mRNA and protein expression of Na+,K+-ATPase, FXYD1, and FXYD5 in cultured human skeletal muscle cells
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: PloS one. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 16:2, s. e0247377-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Denervation reduces the abundance of Na+,K+-ATPase (NKA) in skeletal muscle, while reinnervation increases it. Primary human skeletal muscle cells, the most widely used model to study human skeletal muscle in vitro, are usually cultured as myoblasts or myotubes without neurons and typically do not contract spontaneously, which might affect their ability to express and regulate NKA. We determined how differentiation, de novo innervation, and electrical pulse stimulation affect expression of NKA (α and β) subunits and NKA regulators FXYD1 (phospholemman) and FXYD5 (dysadherin). Differentiation of myoblasts into myotubes under low serum conditions increased expression of myogenic markers CD56 (NCAM1), desmin, myosin heavy chains, dihydropyridine receptor subunit α1S, and SERCA2 as well as NKAα2 and FXYD1, while it decreased expression of FXYD5 mRNA. Myotubes, which were innervated de novo by motor neurons in co-culture with the embryonic rat spinal cord explants, started to contract spontaneously within 7–10 days. A short-term co-culture (10–11 days) promoted mRNA expression of myokines, such as IL-6, IL-7, IL-8, and IL-15, but did not affect mRNA expression of NKA, FXYDs, or myokines, such as musclin, cathepsin B, meteorin-like protein, or SPARC. A long-term co-culture (21 days) increased the protein abundance of NKAα1, NKAα2, FXYD1, and phospho-FXYD1Ser68 without attendant changes in mRNA levels. Suppression of neuromuscular transmission with α-bungarotoxin or tubocurarine for 24 h did not alter NKA or FXYD mRNA expression. Electrical pulse stimulation (48 h) of non-innervated myotubes promoted mRNA expression of NKAβ2, NKAβ3, FXYD1, and FXYD5. In conclusion, low serum concentration promotes NKAα2 and FXYD1 expression, while de novo innervation is not essential for upregulation of NKAα2 and FXYD1 mRNA in cultured myotubes. Finally, although innervation and EPS both stimulate contractions of myotubes, they exert distinct effects on the expression of NKA and FXYDs.

  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 1538-4357 .- 0004-637X. ; 938:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a multiwavelength study of IC 860, a nearby post-starburst galaxy at the early stage of transitioning from blue and star forming to red and quiescent. Optical images reveal a galaxy-wide, dusty outflow originating from a compact core. We find evidence for a multiphase outflow in the molecular and neutral gas phase from the CO position-velocity diagram and NaD absorption features. We constrain the neutral mass outflow rate to be ∼0.5 M ⊙ yr−1, and the total hydrogen mass outflow rate to be ∼12 M ⊙ yr−1. Neither outflow component seems able to escape the galaxy. We also find evidence for a recent merger in the optical images, CO spatial distribution, and kinematics, and evidence for a buried active galactic nucleus in the optical emission line ratios, mid-IR properties, and radio spectral shape. The depletion time of the molecular gas reservoir under the current star formation rate is ∼7 Gyr, indicating that the galaxy could stay at the intermediate stage between the blue and red sequence for a long time. Thus the timescales for a significant decline in star formation rate (quenching) and gas depletion are not necessarily the same. Our analysis supports the quenching picture where outflows help suppress star formation by disturbing rather than expelling the gas and shed light on possible ongoing activities in similar quenching galaxies.

  • Phosphorylation of Na+,K+-ATPase at Tyr10 of the α1-Subunit is Suppressed by AMPK and Enhanced by Ouabain in Cultured Kidney Cells
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The Journal of membrane biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1432-1424 .- 0022-2631. ; 254:5-6, s. 531-548
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Na+,K+-ATPase (NKA) is essential for maintenance of cellular and whole-body water and ion homeostasis. In the kidney, a major site of ion transport, NKA consumes ~ 50% of ATP, indicating a tight coordination of NKA and energy metabolism. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a cellular energy sensor, regulates NKA by modulating serine phosphorylation of the α1-subunit, but whether it modulates other important regulatory phosphosites, such as Tyr10, is unknown. Using human kidney (HK-2) cells, we determined that the phosphorylation of Tyr10 was stimulated by the epidermal growth factor (EGF), which was opposed by inhibitors of Src kinases (PP2), tyrosine kinases (genistein), and EGF receptor (EGFR, gefitinib). AMPK activators AICAR and A-769662 suppressed the EGF-stimulated phosphorylation of EGFR (Tyr1173) and NKAα1 at Tyr10. The phosphorylation of Src (Tyr416) was unaltered by AICAR and increased by A-769662. Conversely, ouabain (100 nM), a pharmacological NKA inhibitor and a putative adrenocortical hormone, enhanced the EGF-stimulated Tyr10 phosphorylation without altering the phosphorylation of EGFR (Tyr1173) or Src (Tyr416). Ouabain (100–1000 nM) increased the ADP:ATP ratio, while it suppressed the lactate production and the oxygen consumption rate in a dose-dependent manner. Treatment with ouabain or gene silencing of NKAα1 or NKAα3 subunit did not activate AMPK. In summary, AMPK activators and ouabain had antagonistic effects on the phosphorylation of NKAα1 at Tyr10 in cultured HK-2 cells, which implicates a role for Tyr10 in coordinated regulation of NKA-mediated ion transport and energy metabolism.Graphical Abstract
