  • The crosscurrents of Swedish mathematics teacher education
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International perspectives on mathematics teacher education. - Waxhaw, NC, USA : Information Age Publishing. - 9781648026317 - 9781648026294 - 9781648026300 ; , s. 9-48
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As with any programs in teacher education, Swedish mathematics teacher education is influenced by changing political winds, developments in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), culture, history, PISA results, research-based program designs, and a fair amount of passion. Content and outcomes are nationally determined and include the requirement of a strong research foundation, but this is often not how practcing techers work, which exerts its own pull on teacher education. The specific implementations of programs take different forms at the universities that offer mathematics teacher education. In order to provide a comprehensive yet meaningful ntroduction to both the current system and current practices, we describe the overall organization of Swedish mathematics teacher education, and then offer short cases of implemented programs. To ensure inclusivity, the various parts are written by mathematics educators from the respective institutions. In this way, both variation across mathematicas teacher education for diffrent grade levels and variation across different institutions working with the same national directives can be distinguished. Issues such as the academization of teacher education are problematized, as are other forces that constitute the crosscurrents in Swedish mathematics teacher education.

  • Towards WCET Analysis of Multicore Architectures using UPPAAL
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: OpenAccess Series in Informatics, vol. 15, 2010. - 9783939897217 ; , s. 101-112
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To take full advantage of the increasingly used shared-memory multicore architectures, software algorithms will need to be parallelized over multiple threads. This means that threads will have to share resources (e.g. some level of cache) and communicate and synchronize with each other. There already exist software libraries (e.g. OpenMP) used to explicitly parallelize available sequential C/C++ and Fortran code, which means that parallel code could be easily obtained. To be able to use parallel software running on multicore architectures in embedded systems with hard real-time constraints, new WCET (Worst-Case Execution Time) analysis methods and tools must be developed. This paper investigates a method based on model-checking a system of timed automata using the UPPAAL tool box. It is found that it is possible to perform WCET analysis on (not too large and complex) parallel systems using UPPAAL. We also show how to model thread synchronization using spinlock-like primitives.

  • Digitalisering av krisövning : Erfarenheter från CriseIT-projekten
  • 2021

  • A Bermuda Triangle?: A Review of Method Application and Triangulation in User Experience Evaluation
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems - Proceedings. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. - 9781450356206 ; 2018-April
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • User experience (UX) evaluation is a growing field with diverse approaches. To understand the development since previous meta-review efforts, we conducted a state-of-the-art review of UX evaluation techniques with special attention to the triangulation between methods. We systematically selected and analyzed 100 papers from recent years and while we found an increase of relevant UX studies, we also saw a remaining overlap with pure usability evaluations. Positive trends include an increasing percentage of field rather than lab studies and a tendency to combine several methods in UX studies. Triangulation was applied in more than two thirds of the studies, and the most common method combination was questionnaires and interviews. Based on our analysis, we derive common patterns for triangulation in UX evaluation efforts. A critical discussion about existing approaches should help to obtain stronger results, especially when evaluating new technologies.

  • Home phototherapy for hyperbilirubinemia in neonates : an unblinded multicentre randomised controlled trial
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Örebro University's Nobel Day Festivities. - 9789187789922
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background/Objective: The aim of this study was to assess whether home phototherapy is a safe alternative to hospital treatment.Method: This was a randomised controlled, multicentre, trial in which term newborns with a total serum bilirubin of 300-400 μmol/ were randomized to either home phototherapy or conventional in-hospital phototherapy. The outcome measurements were parent-infant bonding, stress and measurements of safety and feasibility. A descriptive qualitative study based on interviews was performed as well as a health economic analysis.Result: 147 patients were recruited from 6 hospitals, Results showed no difference between groups in the safety and feasibility outcomes. Parents in the intervention group had better scores on bonding and lower levels of stress. The interviews showed that parents felt secure at home. The cost per patient was €337 for home phototherapy compared with €1156 for the hospital alternative indicating average cost savings of €819 or 71% per patient. Conclusion: Home phototherapy can be considered a safe and feasible alternative to hospital care for well selected patients. It improves bonding and stress for parents and reduces health care costs. Since the first publication from this study was published home phototherapy is now recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics as an alternative to hospital care for patients with uncomplicated hyperbilirubinemia.

  • Home phototherapy of term neonates improves parental bonding and stress : findings from a randomised controlled trial
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Acta Paediatrica. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0803-5253 .- 1651-2227. ; 111:4, s. 760-766
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM: We aimed to evaluate whether in-home phototherapy for hyper bilirubinaemia could reduce the poorer parent-infant bonding and increased parental stress associated with neonatal hospital treatment.METHODS: In this multicentre randomised controlled trial we allocated families to either home phototherapy or standard hospital care. The primary outcome was parent-infant bonding measured on the Postpartum Bonding Questionnaire directly after therapy and 4 months later. Secondary outcomes were results on four other instruments measuring parental bonding, quality of life, and mental health.RESULTS: We randomised 78 of 147 newborn infants to intervention and 69 to the control group. No significant differences were detected in length of stay, mean bilirubin, or weight gain. Parents in the intervention group had better scores on bonding both at discharge (p = 0.034) and at 4 months (p = 0.008; effect size r = 0.2) and lower levels of stress at 4 months (p = 0.024) than controls. No statistically significant outcomes were found for the secondary outcomes.CONCLUSION: In-home phototherapy improved bonding and reduced parental stress in comparison with usual in-hospital treatment. Caregivers should consider offering home phototherapy to families of non-immunised term infants with hyperbilirubinaemia.

  • Retrospective meta-transcriptomic identification of severe dengue in a traveller returning from Africa to Sweden, 1990
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: One Health. - : Elsevier. - 2352-7714. ; 12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pathogens associated with haemorrhagic fever commonly have zoonotic origins. The first documented imported case of likely viral severe haemorrhagic fever in Sweden occurred in 1990. Despite extensive study, no aetiological agent was identified. Following retrospective investigation with total RNA-sequencing of samples collected between 7 and 36 days from onset of symptoms we identified dengue virus 3 (DENV-3) and a human pegivirus (HPgV). We conclude that the patient likely suffered from haemorrhagic symptoms due to an atypical severe and undiagnosed dengue infection.

  • Effects of lung tissue characterization in radiotherapy of breast cancer under deep inspiration breath hold when using Monte Carlo dosimetry
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physica medica (Testo stampato). - : Associazione Italiana di Fisica Medica. - 1120-1797 .- 1724-191X. ; 90, s. 83-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: To investigate the sensitivity of Monte Carlo (MC) calculated lung dose distributions to lung tissue characterization in external beam radiotherapy of breast cancer under Deep Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH). Methods: EGSnrc based MC software was employed. Mean lung densities for one hundred patients were analysed. CT number frequency and clinical dose distributions were calculated for 15 patients with mean lung density below 0.14 g/cm3. Lung volume with a pre-defined CT numbers was also considered. Lung tissue was characterized by applying different CT calibrations in the low-density region and air-lung tissue thresholds. Dose impact was estimated by Dose Volume Histogram (DVH) parameters. Results: Mean lung densities below 0.14 g/cm3 were found in 10% of the patients. CT numbers below −960 HU dominated the CT frequency distributions with a high rate of CT numbers at −990 HU. Mass density conversion approach influenced the DVH shape. V4Gy and V8Gy varied by 7% and 5% for the selected patients and by 9% and 3.5% for the pre-defined lung volume. V16Gy and V20Gy, were within 2.5%. Regions above 20 Gy were affected. Variations in air- lung tissue differentiation resulted in DVH parameters within 1%. Threshold at −990 HU was confirmed by the CT number frequency distributions. Conclusions: Lung dose distributions were more sensitive to variations in the CT calibration curve below lung (inhale) density than to air-lung tissue differentiation. Low dose regions were mostly affected. The dosimetry effects were found to be potentially important to 10% of the patients treated under DIBH.

  • CRF and urotensin I effects on aggression and anxiety-like behavior in rainbow trout
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Experimental Biology. - : The Company of Biologists. - 0022-0949 .- 1477-9145. ; 214:6, s. 907-914
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) is central in the stress response but also modulates several behaviors including anxiety-related behaviors and aggression. In this study, juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were tested for competitive ability, determined during dyadic fights for dominance, after intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) administration of CRF, urotensin I (UI), the non-specific CRF antagonist alpha-helical RF9-41 (ahCRF) or the CRF receptor subtype 1-specific antagonist antalarmin, when paired with a mass-matched con-specific injected with saline. In addition, isolated fish received the same substances. Plasma cortisol and brain monoamines were monitored in all fish. Most fish receiving CRF showed a conspicuous behavior consisting of flaring the opercula, opening the mouth and violent shaking of the head from side to side. When this occurred, the fish immediately forfeited the fight. Similar behavior was observed in most fish receiving UI but no effect on outcome of dyadic fights was noted. This behavior seems similar to non-ambulatory motor activity seen in rats and could be anxiety related. Furthermore, fish receiving CRF at a dose of 1000. ng became subordinate, whereas all other treatments had no effects on the outcome of dyadic fights. In addition, isolated fish receiving ahCRF had lower brain stem concentrations of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid, serotonin, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid and dopamine. In conclusion, CRF seems to attenuate competitive ability, and both CRF and UI seem to induce anxiety-like behavior.

  • Governing and professionalism : Challenges and opportunities for policy makers, researchers and practitioners in education
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nordic Education in a Democratically Troublesome time. - Örebro : Örebro University. - 9789187789236 ; , s. 61-64
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In recent years, there has been an increased societal and political debate about how the governing of welfare institutions can be best organized in order to serve the public and uphold democracy. In education, positively loaded key concepts such as equivalence, quality and legal security have dominated the debate. Simultaneously, governance ideas implied in NPM-policies, in particular the increased development of quality assurance systems and accountability regimes, have been criticized for its unintended consequences and possible narrowing of the societal mandate for education. Concerns have been raised about a need for revitalizing trust in professionals, at the same time as ensuring a certain amount of control. But how can such a balance be found?By introducing and raising critical questions on dominant governance discourses in education, including issues about professionalism and quality, this seminar invites deliberations among policy makers, researchers and practitioners on how we may seek new ways of making welfare institutions sustainable in democratic societies. A core issue is how education constructively can contribute to the promotion and upholding of democracy. The four presenters will provide brief introductions with different, yet related, perspectives on the theme “Governing and Professionalism”. Thereafter all participants are invited to a shared discussion on the opportunities and challenges for collaboration among policy makers, researchers and practitioners to ensure education that serve the public good in a democratically troublesome time.

  • Occurrence and removal efficiency of parasitic protozoa in Swedish wastewater treatment plants
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Science of the Total Environment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0048-9697 .- 1879-1026. ; 598, s. 821-827
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Giardia intestinalis, Cryptosporidium spp., Entamoeba histolytica and Dientamoeba fragilis are parasitic protozoa and causative agents of gastroenteritis in humans. G. intestinalis and Cryptosporidium spp. in particular are the most common protozoa associated with waterborne outbreaks in high-income countries. Surveillance of protozoan prevalence in wastewater and evaluation of wastewater treatment removal efficiencies of protozoan pathogens is therefore imperative for assessment of human health risk. In this study, influent and effluent wastewater samples from three wastewater treatment plants in Sweden were collected over nearly one year and assessed for prevalence of parasitic protozoa. Quantitative real-time PCR using primers specific for the selected protozoa Cryptosporidium spp., G. intestinalis, E. histolytica, Entamoeba dispar and D. fragilis was used for protozoan DNA detection and assessment of wastewater treatment removal efficiencies. Occurrence of G. intestinalis, E. dispar and D. fragilis DNA was assessed in both influent (44, 30 and 39 out of 51 samples respectively) and effluent wastewater (14, 9 and 33 out of 51 samples respectively) in all three wastewater treatment plants. Mean removal efficiencies of G. intestinalis, E. dispar and D. fragilis DNA quantities, based on all three wastewater treatment plants studied varied between 67 and 87%, 37–75% and 20–34% respectively. Neither E. histolytica nor Cryptosporidium spp. were detected in any samples. Overall, higher quantities of protozoan DNA were observed from February to June 2012. The high prevalence of protozoa in influent wastewater indicates the need for continued monitoring of these pathogens in wastewater-associated aquatic environments to minimise the potential risk for human infection.

  • Particle separation using ultrasound can radically reduce embolic load to brain after cardiac surgery.
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Annals of Thoracic Surgery. - : Elsevier BV. - 1552-6259 .- 0003-4975. ; 78:5, s. 1572-1578
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background. Microembolism during cardiopulmonary bypass has been suggested as being the predominant cause of neurocognitive disorders after cardiac surgery. Shed blood, normally retransfused into the patient during cardiopulmonary bypass, is a major source of lipid microemboli in the brain capillaries. A newly developed technique based on acoustic standing-wave separation of particles in fluid in microchannels, with the capacity to remove lipid particles in blood, is presented. Methods. A separator consisting of eight parallel, high-fidelity microfabricated channels was actuated with an ultrasound field to create a standing wave. Three different concentrations of lipid particles (diameter, 0.3 mum) were added to blood samples with increasing hematocrits and introduced into the separator channels to separate lipid particles and erythrocytes. Results. The mean separation rates for lipid particles were 81.9% +/- 7.6% and for erythrocytes 79.8% +/- 9.9%, and both were related to the hematocrit level of the incoming blood sample. The procedure was atraumatic and did not cause hemolysis. Conclusions. Particle separation by means of an acoustic standing-wave technique can be used for atraumatic and effective removal of lipid particles from blood, with the possible clinical implication of reducing neurocognitive complications after cardiopulmonary bypass. • Raman spectroscopy is a laser-based vibrational technique that can provide spectral signatures unique to a multitude of compounds. The technique is gaining widespread interest as a method for detecting hidden explosives due to its sensitivity and ease of use. In this letter, we present a computationally efficient classification scheme for accurate standoff identification of several common explosives using visible-range Raman spectroscopy. Using real measurements, we evaluate and modify a recent correlation-based approach to classify Raman spectra from various harmful and commonplace substances. The results show that the proposed approach can, at a distance of 30 m, or more, successfully classify measured Raman spectra from several explosive substances, including nitromethane, trinitrotoluene, dinitrotoluene, hydrogen peroxide, triacetone triperoxide, and ammonium nitrate.

  • Quantity and quality of nucleic acids extracted from archival formalin fixed paraffin embedded prostate biopsies
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: BMC Medical Research Methodology. - : BioMed Central. - 1471-2288. ; 18:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: In Sweden, human tissue samples obtained from diagnostic and surgical procedures have for decades been routinely stored in a formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded, form. Through linkage with nationwide registers, these samples are available for molecular studies to identify biomarkers predicting mortality even in slow-progressing prostate cancer. However, tissue fixation causes modifications of nucleic acids, making it challenging to extract high-quality nucleic acids from formalin fixated tissues.METHODS: In this study, the efficiency of five commercial nucleic acid extraction kits was compared on 30 prostate biopsies with normal histology, and the quantity and quality of the products were compared using spectrophotometry and Agilent's BioAnalyzer. Student's t-test's and Bland-Altman analyses were performed in order to investigate differences in nucleic acid quantity and quality between the five kits. The best performing extraction kits were subsequently tested on an additional 84 prostate tumor tissues. A Spearman's correlation test and linear regression analyses were performed in order to investigate the impact of tissue age and amount of tissue on nucleic acid quantity and quality.RESULTS: Nucleic acids extracted with RNeasy® FFPE and QIAamp® DNA FFPE Tissue kit had the highest quantity and quality, and was used for extraction from 84 tumor tissues. Nucleic acids were successfully extracted from all biopsies, and the amount of tumor (in millimeter) was found to have the strongest association with quantity and quality of nucleic acids.CONCLUSIONS: To conclude, this study shows that the choice of nucleic acid extraction kit affects the quantity and quality of extracted products. Furthermore, we show that extraction of nucleic acids from archival formalin-fixed prostate biopsies is possible, allowing molecular studies to be performed on this valuable sample collection.
