  • The effect of high temperatures on seed germination of one native and two introduced conifers in Patagonia
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Botany. - Chichester : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0107-055X .- 1756-1051. ; 28:2, s. 231-239
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We examined the effect of thermal shock on the germination of seeds of three conifers, two introduced (Pseudotsuga menziesii and Pinus ponderosa), and one native to Patagonia (Araucaria araucana). Previous research has suggested increased susceptibility to invasions in burnt areas, and therefore, the effect of simulated fire (heat) on seed germination in these native and introduced species was compared. Seeds were heated to two different heat intensities (50°C and 100°C) for 1 or 5 min, which is within the temperature range reached in the upper soil layers during forest fires. Germination tests were then carried out in a growth chamber. The heat treatments had a negative effect on the germination of P. menziesii at temperatures of 100°C, and a negative effect on the germination of P. ponderosa at the temperature of 100°C and the exposure of 5 min. The heat treatments had no affect at all on A. araucana. The species with larger seeds (A. araucana) had higher survival rates after the thermal shocks. Also intraspecific differences in seed sizes possibly point at larger seeds surviving thermal shocks better than smaller seeds. In addition, thermal shock caused a delay in the onset of germination in the two introduced species, while it did not change the time for germination in A. araucana. © The Authors. • Geographic and Habitat Origin Influence Biomass Production and Storage Translocation in the Clonal Plant Aegopodium podagraria.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: PLoS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 9:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Through physiological integration, clonal plants can support ramets in unfavourable patches, exploit heterogeneously distributed resources and distribute resources that are taken up over large areas. Physiological integration generally increases in adverse conditions, but it is not well known which factors determine the evolution of physiological integration. The aim of this study was to investigate if clonal plants from Southern and Northern populations of the clonal herb Aegopodium podagraria differed in physiological integration in terms of translocation of carbon to the rhizomes, and in biomass production using a reciprocal transplant experiment. Aegopodium podagraria from shaded conditions have been suggested to share more resources than clones from open conditions and therefore, plants from forest and open populations within the Southern and Northern regions were included. The regional growing conditions greatly affected biomass production. Plants grown in North Sweden produced more biomass and allocated more biomass to shoots, while plants grown in South Sweden allocated more biomass to rhizomes. There was a regional origin effect as plants originating from North Sweden produced more biomass in both regions. Within the Northern region, plants from shaded habitats translocated more (14)C to the rhizomes, suggesting more storage there than in plants from open habitats. In addition to genetic differentiation in biomass production between Northern and Southern populations, probably as a response to a shorter growing season in the North, there appeared to be genetic differentiation in physiological integration within the Northern region. This shows that both regional and local conditions need to be taken into account in future studies of genetic differentiation of physiological integration in clonal plants.

  • Long-term persistence of GM oilseed rape in the seedbank
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Biology letters. - London : The Royal Society. - 1744-9561 .- 1744-957X. ; 4:3, s. 314-317
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Coexistence between genetically modified (GM) and non-GM plants is a field of rapid development and considerable controversy. In crops, it is increasingly important to understand and predict the GM volunteer emergence in subsequent non-GM crops. Theoretical models suggest recruitment from the seedbank over extended periods, but empirical evidence matching these predictions has been scarce. Here, we provide evidence of long-term GM seed persistence in conventional agriculture. Ten years after a trial of GM herbicide-tolerant oilseed rape, emergent seedlings were collected and tested for herbicide tolerance. Seedlings that survived the glufosinate herbicide (15 out of 38 volunteers) tested positive for at least one GM insert. The resulting density was equivalent to 0.01 plants m−2, despite complying with volunteer reduction recommendations. These results are important in relation to debating and regulating coexistence of GM and non-GM crops, particularly for planting non-GM crops after GM crops in the same field.

  • Healthcare and social care professionals’ experiences of respite care: a critical incident study
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being. - 1748-2623 .- 1748-2631. ; 19:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • IntroductionAging in place is favoured among older persons and supported by research in Sweden, although it poses challenges for overburdened informal caregivers. While respite care can offer support, its accessibility is hindered by organizational challenges and informal caregivers' delays in using it. The experiences of informal caregivers are well-studied, but the professionals' experiences of respite care quality and critical incident management are underexplored.AimTo explore professionals' experiences of critical incidents in respite care, consequences for the persons being cared for, and strategies to manage critical incidents.Materials and methodsA qualitative, critical incident technique was used, and three group interviews with a total of 16 professionals were conducted.ResultsBarriers to quality respite care included communication gaps during care transitions, environmental shortcomings in respite care facilities, lack of support for informal caregivers, and inadequacies in respite care decisions. Strategies to manage critical incidents included individualized care, continuity and communication in care transitions, a conducive environment, support for informal caregivers, and care professionals' positive approach.ConclusionsThe study emphasizes the need for focused efforts on communication, continuity, and a supportive environment. Addressing identified challenges and applying suggested strategies will be key to maximizing the potential of respite care as a vital support for care recipients and their informal caregivers.

  • Actions taken to safeguard the intended health care chain of older people with multiple diagnoses-a critical incident study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: BMC Nursing. - : BMC. - 1472-6955. ; 21:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Older people with multiple diagnoses often have problems coping with their daily lives at home because of lack of coordination between various parts of the healthcare chain during the transit from hospital care to the home. To provide good care to those persons who have the most complex needs, regions and municipalities must work together. It is of importance to develop further empirical knowledge in relation to older persons with multiple diagnoses to illuminate possible obstacles to person-centred care during the transition between healthcare institutions and the persons livelihood. The aim of the present study was to describe nurses' experienced critical incidents in different parts of the intended healthcare chain of older people with multiple diagnoses. Methods: The sample consisted of 18 RNs in different parts of the healthcare system involved in the care of older people with multiple diagnoses. Data were collected by semi structured interviews and analysed according to Critical Incident Technique (CIT). A total of 169 critical incidents were identified describing experiences in recently experienced situations. Results: The result showed that organizational restrictions in providing care and limitations in collaboration were the main areas of experienced critical incidents. Actions took place due to the lack of preventive actions for care, difficulties in upholding patients' legal rights to participation in care, deficiencies in cooperation between organizations as well as ambiguous responsibilities and roles. The RNs experienced critical incidents that required moral actions to ensure continued person-centred nursing and provide evidence-based care. Both types of critical incidents required sole responsibility from the nurse. The RNs acted due to ethics, 'walking the extra mile', searching for person-centred information, and finding out own knowledge barriers. Conclusions: In conclusion and based on this critical incident study, home-based healthcare of older people with multiple diagnoses requires a nurse that is prepared to take personal and moral responsibility to ensure person-centred home-based healthcare. Furthermore, the development of in-between adjustments of organizations to secure cooperation, and transference of person-centred knowledge is needed.

  • Dilemmas in rehabilitation and patient strategies in an intensive home intervention: a follow-up study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being. - 1748-2623 .- 1748-2631. ; 18:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background The original project, where older persons received reablement performed by an interprofessional team showed success factors for IHR. However, since there is a lack of knowledge about why some persons do not recover despite receiving IHR, this study follows up patients' experiences of IHR.Aim To describe older persons' perceived dilemmas in the reablement process within the framework of IHR.Method 11 CIT interviews with participants who have previously received IHR, were analysed, interpreted and categorized according to CIT. The study was approved by the Swedish Ethical Review Authority. Results The results showed disease-related dilemmas, fatigue or pain so that participants could not cope with the prescribed exercises. New diseases appeared, as well as medication side effects made exercising difficult, and painkillers became a prerequisite for coping with IHR. Low self-motivation and mistrust towards the staff emerged like lack of trust due to otherness such as sex, cultural background, or language also became critical. Conclusions Interventions that consider individual- and contextual dilemmas are very important. By recognizing critical situations, this study can work as a basis of evidence to further develop interventions for older people living in their own homes and to ensure them to stay there.

  • Implementation of a New Integrated Healthcare Model; Quality Aspects to Support the Complex Home Care of Older Adults with Multiple Needs
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Multidisciplinary Healthcare. - : DOVE MEDICAL PRESS LTD. - 1178-2390. ; 17, s. 2879-2890
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: This study aims to describe experiences of the implementation of a new integrated healthcare model for older adults with complex care needs due to multimorbidity, living at home, from a health and welfare personnel perspective. The goal was to diminish hospitalization and still carry out high quality care at home for older adults living with multimorbidity. The model was implemented by two organizations working in cooperation, the municipality, and the region that handles interprofessional social care and healthcare in people's homes. Materials and Method: Open-ended group interviews with personnel were carried out, three of the group interviews preimplementations of the model, and three of the group interviews post -implementation. The interviews were audiotaped and analysed according to the procedure of thematic analysis. Results: The quality of the integrated care model was based on care -chain cooperation, shared professionalism, and creating relations with the patient including closeness to next of kin, which was underlined by the participants. Unencumbered time gave the professionals the possibility to develop quality in integrated healthcare as part of integrated and person -centred care. The coproduction of education, research interviews and the follow-up meeting identified successes in diminishing hospitalization rates according to the participants' experiences of the post -implementation interviews. An identified failure was, however, that shared professionalism was not developed over time, rather the different responsibilities were accentuated according to the information retrieved at the follow-up meeting. Conclusion: Quality aspects of the model were identified in the present study. However, when implementation of a new model is completed, the organizations always have their own interpretation of how to further understand the model in question. Plain language summary: The intention of the present study was to follow the process of working with a new model of providing care at home, thus preventing increased numbers of hospital readmissions, based on the professionals point of view of what quality care is for older adults with complex care needs due to multimorbidity, living in their own home. The professionals were interviewed in group settings on several occasions during the implementation. The result showed hopeful expectations expressed by the professionals before the new model was implemented, such as a hope for getting more time for high -quality care for the older adults with multimorbidity. During the teamwork, the conversation within the team members was praised as a key factor that included shared professionalism from professionals with different levels of education and focus on their work. According to the staff, unnecessary hospital stays were reduced, while the interprofessional care -chain cooperation was improved through the work of the integrated care team. For many team members, the positive difference in both work and care satisfaction was highlighted in comparison to regular home care as they were able to use their multi -disciplinary skills and support.

  • Replicative and non-replicative mechanisms in the formation of clustered CNVs are indicated by whole genome characterization
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: PLOS Genetics. - : Public Library of Science. - 1553-7390 .- 1553-7404. ; 14:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Clustered copy number variants (CNVs) as detected by chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) are often reported as germline chromothripsis. However, such cases might need further investigations by massive parallel whole genome sequencing (WGS) in order to accurately define the underlying complex rearrangement, predict the occurrence mechanisms and identify additional complexities. Here, we utilized WGS to delineate the rearrangement structure of 21 clustered CNV carriers first investigated by CMA and identified a total of 83 breakpoint junctions (BPJs). The rearrangements were further sub-classified depending on the patterns observed: I) Cases with only deletions (n = 8) often had additional structural rearrangements, such as insertions and inversions typical to chromothripsis; II) cases with only duplications (n = 7) or III) combinations of deletions and duplications (n = 6) demonstrated mostly interspersed duplications and BPJs enriched with microhomology. In two cases the rearrangement mutational signatures indicated both a breakage-fusion-bridge cycle process and haltered formation of a ring chromosome. Finally, we observed two cases with Alu- and LINE-mediated rearrangements as well as two unrelated individuals with seemingly identical clustered CNVs on 2p25.3, possibly a rare European founder rearrangement. In conclusion, through detailed characterization of the derivative chromosomes we show that multiple mechanisms are likely involved in the formation of clustered CNVs and add further evidence for chromoanagenesis mechanisms in both "simple" and highly complex chromosomal rearrangements. Finally, WGS characterization adds positional information, important for a correct clinical interpretation and deciphering mechanisms involved in the formation of these rearrangements.

  • Re: en ny samhällssektor spirar
  • 2016

  • Hα emission-line stars in molecular clouds : II. The M42 region
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 570
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a deep survey of Hα emission-line stars in the M 42 region using wide-field objective prism films. A total of 1699 Hαemission-line stars were identified, of which 1025 were previously unknown, within an area of 5.̊5 × 5.̊5 centred on the Trapezium Cluster. We present Hα strength estimates, positions, and JHKs photometry extracted from 2MASS, and comparisons to previous surveys. The spatial distribution of the bulk of the stars follows the molecular cloud as seen in CO and these stars are likely to belong to the very young population of stars associated with the Orion Nebula Cluster. Additionally, there is a scattered population of Hα emission-line stars distributed all over the region surveyed, which may consist partly of foreground stars associated with the young NGC 1980 cluster, as well as some foreground and background dMe or Be stars. The present catalogue adds a large number of candidate low-mass young stars belonging to the Orion population, selected independently of their infrared excess or X-ray emission.

  • Hα Emission-Line Stars in Molecular Clouds. I. The NGC 2264 Region
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Astronomical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-6256 .- 1538-3881. ; 127:2, s. 1117-1130
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a deep survey of Hα emission-line stars in the NGC 2264 region using wide-field objective prism films. We find 357 Hα emission-line stars, of which 113 were previously detected, within an area of 3°×3° centered on the Cone Nebula, with a majority of stars being concentrated in a dense cluster at the center of the region. We present a large-scale CO map of NGC 2264 and find a strong correlation between the cluster of Hα emission-line stars and the most massive core in the cloud complex. A more extended halo of stars poorly correlated with the gas may represent stars that have drifted away from their birth place, suggesting that star formation has taken place in NGC 2264 for several million years.

  • Climate regulation, energy provisioning and water purification : Quantifying ecosystem service delivery of bioenergy willow grown on riparian buffer zones using life cycle assessment
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Ambio: a Journal of the Human Environment. - Cham : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0044-7447 .- 1654-7209. ; 45:8, s. 872-884
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Whilst life cycle assessment (LCA) boundaries are expanded to account for negative indirect consequences of bioenergy such as indirect land use change (ILUC), ecosystem services such as water purification sometimes delivered by perennial bioenergy crops are typically neglected in LCA studies. Consequential LCA was applied to evaluate the significance of nutrient interception and retention on the environmental balance of unfertilised energy willow planted on 50-m riparian buffer strips and drainage filtration zones in the Skåne region of Sweden. Excluding possible ILUC effects and considering oil heat substitution, strategically planted filter willow can achieve net global warming potential (GWP) and eutrophication potential (EP) savings of up to 11.9 Mg CO2e and 47 kg PO4e ha−1 year−1, respectively, compared with a GWP saving of 14.8 Mg CO2e ha−1 year−1 and an EP increase of 7 kg PO4e ha−1 year−1 for fertilised willow. Planting willow on appropriate buffer and filter zones throughout Skåne could avoid 626 Mg year−1 PO4e nutrient loading to waters.

  • “Intensive-Home-Rehabilitation” Intervention for Older Persons : A Follow-Up Study of Team Members’ Perceptions
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Multidisciplinary Healthcare. - : Dove Medical Press Ltd. - 1178-2390. ; 16, s. 2207-2216
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Reablement as a concept includes a health-promoting perspective with the goal of strengthening health and the ability to perform and participate in daily activities, a broader perspective than in general home care and rehabilitation. Reablement interventions have shown to be both more effective and to a greater extent improve the function and health-related quality of life of older persons when compared to traditional home-based care. Success factors for intensive-home-rehabilitation (IHR), an intervention based on the reablement concept, have been described earlier; however, there is a lack of knowledge about why some persons do not recover despite receiving IHR. Aim: The aim was to shed light on the older persons’ conditions during IHR from the perspective of the rehabilitation team members and to describe obstacles to recovery. Methods: Qualitative analysis of health and care records of persons (65+) who received IHR (n=19) performed by an interprofes-sional team. Results: The analysis revealed various problematic situations, dilemmas, that occurred in the older persons’ lives during IHR, as well as their consequences and the strategies employed by the older persons as a result. IHR aspects perceived as successful by the older persons also emerged, as well as differences in experiences of the physical and mental aspects of the IHR. Analysis also revealed reasons why the IHR might be experienced as broadly successful. Conclusion: The older persons seemed to be satisfied with IHR and achieved their goals; however, some seemed to need more time to reach their goals. Background factors such as having additional diagnoses and living alone might affect the rehabilitation process. Implication for Practice: The study provides knowledge regarding the importance of IHR for the recovery process for the increasing numbers of older persons, which might also be useful in other patient groups requiring otherwise long-term rehabilitation and recovery such as after covid-19 infection.

  • Firm renewal in the regional economy
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis consists four independent papers. In each paper the purpose is to analyse firm renewal, with special consideration to regional characteristics. Highlighted here are the knowledge available in the region where a firm is located as well as the local supply of financial intermediaries. The first paper analyses how the interaction of firms’ internal and external knowledge, in terms of knowledge intensive business services (KIBS), is related to the intensive and extensive margins of export flows. The second paper can be considered a continuation of the first, as the focus is solely on the export of new products. Also here, the interaction of internal and external knowledge is the main focus, analysed through education types. The results of these papers suggest that the regional contexts are indeed relevant for firm renewal, as firms that benefit from being located in areas with high external knowledge already have high internal knowledge. The third paper shifts focus to the innovation process itself by analysing how the access to the local supply of banks is related to firms’ perceived obstacles for innovation activities. The results indicate that lower access to banks increases the probability to experience problems obtaining external capital, which could be detrimental for firms’ renewal possibilities in the long run. The fourth paper focus on the creation of firms and analyses whether individuals are more or less likely to be self-employed after having children in a context where an extensive welfare system exists. The results show that individuals are less likely to be self-employed after having children than before, thus lowering the rate of firm renewal in the economy.
