  • Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Communications Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2399-3642. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 2019 IEEE/CVF INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMPUTER VISION WORKSHOPS (ICCVW). - : IEEE COMPUTER SOC. - 9781728150239 ; , s. 2206-2241
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Visual Object Tracking challenge VOT2019 is the seventh annual tracker benchmarking activity organized by the VOT initiative. Results of 81 trackers are presented; many are state-of-the-art trackers published at major computer vision conferences or in journals in the recent years. The evaluation included the standard VOT and other popular methodologies for short-term tracking analysis as well as the standard VOT methodology for long-term tracking analysis. The VOT2019 challenge was composed of five challenges focusing on different tracking domains: (i) VOT-ST2019 challenge focused on short-term tracking in RGB, (ii) VOT-RT2019 challenge focused on "real-time" short-term tracking in RGB, (iii) VOT-LT2019 focused on long-term tracking namely coping with target disappearance and reappearance. Two new challenges have been introduced: (iv) VOT-RGBT2019 challenge focused on short-term tracking in RGB and thermal imagery and (v) VOT-RGBD2019 challenge focused on long-term tracking in RGB and depth imagery. The VOT-ST2019, VOT-RT2019 and VOT-LT2019 datasets were refreshed while new datasets were introduced for VOT-RGBT2019 and VOT-RGBD2019. The VOT toolkit has been updated to support both standard short-term, long-term tracking and tracking with multi-channel imagery. Performance of the tested trackers typically by far exceeds standard baselines. The source code for most of the trackers is publicly available from the VOT page. The dataset, the evaluation kit and the results are publicly available at the challenge website(1).

  • Impaired meningeal lymphatic drainage in patients with idiopathic Parkinson’s disease
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature Medicine. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1078-8956 .- 1546-170X. ; 27:3, s. 411-418
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Animal studies implicate meningeal lymphatic dysfunction in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease (PD). However, there is no direct evidence in humans to support this role1–5. In this study, we used dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging to assess meningeal lymphatic flow in cognitively normal controls and patients with idiopathic PD (iPD) or atypical Parkinsonian (AP) disorders. We found that patients with iPD exhibited significantly reduced flow through the meningeal lymphatic vessels (mLVs) along the superior sagittal sinus and sigmoid sinus, as well as a notable delay in deep cervical lymph node perfusion, compared to patients with AP. There was no significant difference in the size (cross-sectional area) of mLVs in patients with iPD or AP versus controls. In mice injected with α-synuclein (α-syn) preformed fibrils, we showed that the emergence of α-syn pathology was followed by delayed meningeal lymphatic drainage, loss of tight junctions among meningeal lymphatic endothelial cells and increased inflammation of the meninges. Finally, blocking flow through the mLVs in mice treated with α-syn preformed fibrils increased α-syn pathology and exacerbated motor and memory deficits. These results suggest that meningeal lymphatic drainage dysfunction aggravates α-syn pathology and contributes to the progression of PD.

  • Microstructure and mechanical properties of the laser welded air-hardening steel joint
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Materials Characterization. - : Elsevier BV. - 1044-5803 .- 1873-4189. ; 213
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The decrease in mechanical properties of high-strength steel after welding is an important issue affecting the wide application of high-strength steel. Air-hardening steel is a high-strength steel suitable for lower body structural parts such as subframes. Its application process involves welding, hot forming and other processes. The present work investigates the microstructure and mechanical properties of the air-hardening steel laser welded joint that is air-cooled after hot forming in the two-phase zone (800 °C). The microstructure was characterized by electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The results show that during hot forming, the welded joint transforms from martensite to ferrite and acicular martensite, and the base metal transforms from ferrite to polygonal martensite and ferrite. The difference in martensite morphology between the welded joint and the base metal is attributed to the nucleation positions of austenite. The structural evolution of the welded joint and the base metal is accompanied with the annihilation and reproduction of dislocations, which results in significant changes in hardness. The hardness value dropped from the highest 430 HV to 271 HV in the welded joint, while increased from the lowest 184 HV to 203 HV in the base metal. After hot forming, the tensile strength of the welded sample is reduced by only 36 MPa, and the total elongation is slightly decreased by about 1.5% compared with the unwelded sample. The welded joint and the base metal have similar plastic deformation capabilities, since the acicular martensite in the welded joint displays good plastic deformation ability, and the dislocation density of the welded joint and the base metal is similar. Overall, the microstructure and dislocation density of the air-hardening steel welded joint after hot forming are similar to those of the base metal, which is responsible for the good mechanical properties of air-hardening steel welded joint.

  • Identification and validation of volatile organic compounds in bile for differential diagnosis of perihilar cholangiocarcinoma
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Clinica Chimica Acta. - : Elsevier. - 0009-8981 .- 1873-3492. ; 541
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Early and differential diagnosis of perihilar cholangiocarcinoma (PHCCA) is highly challenging. This study aimed to evaluate whether volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in bile samples could be emerging diagnostic biomarkers for PHCCA. We collected 200 bile samples from patients with PHCCA and benign biliary diseases (BBD), including a 140-patient training cohort and an 60-patient test cohort. Gas chromatography-ion mobility spec-trometry (GC-IMS) was used for VOCs detection. The predictive models were constructed using machine learning algorithms. Our analysis detected 19 VOC substances using GC-IMS in the bile samples and resulted in the identification of three new VOCs, 2-methoxyfuran, propyl isovalerate, and diethyl malonate that were found in bile. Unsupervised hierarchical clustering analysis supported that VOCs detected in the bile could distinguish PHCCA from BBD. Twelve VOCs defined according to 32 signal peaks had significant statistical significance between BBD and PHCCA, including four up-regulated VOCs in PHCCA, such as 2-ethyl-1-hexanol, propyl iso-valerate, cyclohexanone, and acetophenone, while the rest eight VOCs were down-regulated. ROC curve analysis revealed that machine learning models based on VOCs could help diagnosing PHCCA. Among them, SVM pro-vided the highest AUC of 0.966, with a sensitivity and specificity of 93.1% and 100%, respectively. The diag-nostic model based on different VOC spectra could be a feasible method for the differential diagnosis of PHCCA.

  • Dose-response relationship between dietary magnesium intake, serum magnesium concentration and risk of hypertension : a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nutrition Journal. - : BioMed Central. - 1475-2891. ; 16
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The findings of prospective cohort studies are inconsistent regarding the association between dietary magnesium intake and serum magnesium concentration and the risk of hypertension. We aimed to review the evidence from prospective cohort studies and perform a dose-response meta-analysis to investigate the relationship between dietary magnesium intake and serum magnesium concentrations and the risk of hypertension. Methods: We searched systematically PubMed, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library databases from October 1951 through June 2016. Prospective cohort studies reporting effect estimates with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for hypertension in more than two categories of dietary magnesium intake and/or serum magnesium concentrations were included. Random-effects models were used to combine the estimated effects. Results: Nine articles (six on dietary magnesium intake, two on serum magnesium concentration and one on both) of ten cohort studies, including 20,119 cases of hypertension and 180,566 participates, were eligible for inclusion in the meta-analysis. We found an inverse association between dietary magnesium intake and the risk of hypertension [relative risk (RR) = 0.92; 95% CI: 0.86, 0.98] comparing the highest intake group with the lowest. A 100 mg/day increment in magnesium intake was associated with a 5% reduction in the risk of hypertension (RR = 0.95; 95% CI: 0.90, 1.00). The association of serum magnesium concentration with the risk of hypertension was marginally significant (RR = 0.91; 95% CI: 0.80, 1.02).Conclusions: Current evidence supports the inverse dose-response relationship between dietary magnesium intake and the risk of hypertension. However, the evidence about the relationship between serum magnesium concentration and hypertension is limited.

  • Fabrication and bonding of In bumps on Micro-LED with 8 μ m pixel pitch
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: ENGINEERING RESEARCH EXPRESS. - 2631-8695. ; 6:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Indium (In) is currently used to fabricate metal bumps on micro-light-emitting diode (Micro-LED) chips due to its excellent physical properties. However, as Micro-LED pixel size and pitch decrease, achieving high-quality In bumps on densely packed Micro-LED chips often presents more challenges. This paper describes the process of fabricating In bumps on micro-LEDs using thermal evaporation, highlighting an issue where In tends to grow laterally within the photoresist pattern, ultimately blocking the pattern and resulting in undersized and poorly dense In bumps on the Micro-LED chip. To address this issue, we conducted numerous experiments to study the height variation of In bumps within a range of photoresist aperture sizes (3 mu m -7 mu m) under two different resist thickness conditions (3.8 mu m and 4.8 mu m). The results showed that the resist thickness had a certain effect on the height of In bumps on the Micro-LED chip electrodes. Moreover, we found that, with the photoresist pattern size increasing under constant resist thickness conditions, the height and quality of the bumps significantly improved. Based on this finding, we rationalized the adjustment of the photoresist pattern size within a limited emission platform range to compensate for the height difference of In bumps caused by different resist thicknesses between the cathode and anode regions. Consequently, well-shaped and dense In bumps with a maximum height of up to 4.4 mu m were fabricated on 8 mu m pitch Micro-LED chips. Afterwards, we bonded the Micro-LED chip with indium bumps to the CMOS chip, and we found that we could successfully control the CMOS chip to drive the Micro-LED chip to display specific characters through the Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC). This work is of significant importance for the fabrication of In bumps on Micro-LED chips with pitches below 10 mu m and subsequent bonding processes.

  • Ingår i: Military Medical Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2054-9369. ; 7:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the cause of a rapidly spreading illness, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), affecting more than seventeen million people around the world. Diagnosis and treatment guidelines for clinicians caring for patients are needed. In the early stage, we have issued "A rapid advice guideline for the diagnosis and treatment of 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) infected pneumonia (standard version)"; now there are many direct evidences emerged and may change some of previous recommendations and it is ripe for develop an evidence-based guideline. We formed a working group of clinical experts and methodologists. The steering group members proposed 29 questions that are relevant to the management of COVID-19 covering the following areas: chemoprophylaxis, diagnosis, treatments, and discharge management. We searched the literature for direct evidence on the management of COVID-19, and assessed its certainty generated recommendations using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. Recommendations were either strong or weak, or in the form of ungraded consensus-based statement. Finally, we issued 34 statements. Among them, 6 were strong recommendations for, 14 were weak recommendations for, 3 were weak recommendations against and 11 were ungraded consensus-based statement. They covered topics of chemoprophylaxis (including agents and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) agents), diagnosis (including clinical manifestations, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), respiratory tract specimens, IgM and IgG antibody tests, chest computed tomography, chest x-ray, and CT features of asymptomatic infections), treatments (including lopinavir-ritonavir, umifenovir, favipiravir, interferon, remdesivir, combination of antiviral drugs, hydroxychloroquine/chloroquine, interleukin-6 inhibitors, interleukin-1 inhibitors, glucocorticoid, qingfei paidu decoction, lianhua qingwen granules/capsules, convalescent plasma, lung transplantation, invasive or noninvasive ventilation, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)), and discharge management (including discharge criteria and management plan in patients whose RT-PCR retesting shows SARS-CoV-2 positive after discharge). We also created two figures of these recommendations for the implementation purpose. We hope these recommendations can help support healthcare workers caring for COVID-19 patients.

  • To which world regions does the valence-dominance model of social perception apply?
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature Human Behaviour. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2397-3374. ; 5:1, s. 159-169
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the past 10 years, Oosterhof and Todorov's valence-dominance model has emerged as the most prominent account of how people evaluate faces on social dimensions. In this model, two dimensions (valence and dominance) underpin social judgements of faces. Because this model has primarily been developed and tested in Western regions, it is unclear whether these findings apply to other regions. We addressed this question by replicating Oosterhof and Todorov's methodology across 11 world regions, 41 countries and 11,570 participants. When we used Oosterhof and Todorov's original analysis strategy, the valence-dominance model generalized across regions. When we used an alternative methodology to allow for correlated dimensions, we observed much less generalization. Collectively, these results suggest that, while the valence-dominance model generalizes very well across regions when dimensions are forced to be orthogonal, regional differences are revealed when we use different extraction methods and correlate and rotate the dimension reduction solution. • The Visual Object Tracking challenge VOT2016 aims at comparing short-term single-object visual trackers that do not apply pre-learned models of object appearance. Results of 70 trackers are presented, with a large number of trackers being published at major computer vision conferences and journals in the recent years. The number of tested state-of-the-art trackers makes the VOT 2016 the largest and most challenging benchmark on short-term tracking to date. For each participating tracker, a short description is provided in the Appendix. The VOT2016 goes beyond its predecessors by (i) introducing a new semi-automatic ground truth bounding box annotation methodology and (ii) extending the evaluation system with the no-reset experiment.

    • Background: Pneumonia is a common disease worldwide in preschool children. Despite its large population size, China has had no comprehensive study of the national prevalence, risk factors, and management of pneumonia among preschool children. We therefore investigated the prevalence of pneumonia among preschool children in Chinese seven representative cities, and explore the possible risk factors of pneumonia on children, with a view to calling the world's attention to childhood pneumonia to reduce the prevalence of childhood pneumonia. Methods: Two group samples of 63,663 and 52,812 preschool children were recruited from 2011 and 2019 surveys, respectively. Which were derived from the cross-sectional China, Children, Homes, Health (CCHH) study using a multi-stage stratified sampling method. This survey was conducted in kindergartens in seven representative cities. Exclusion criteria were younger than 2 years old or older than 8 years old, non-permanent population, basic information such as gender, date of birth and breast feeding is incomplete. Pneumonia was determined on the basis of parents reported history of clearly diagnosed by the physician. All participants were assessed with a standard questionnaire. Risk factors for pneumonia, and association between pneumonia and other respiratory diseases were examined by multivariable-adjusted analyses done in all participants for whom data on the variables of interest were available. • 2022
  • Ingår i: Chemical Engineering Journal. - : Elsevier BV. - 1385-8947. ; 446
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It had been commonly accepted in the organic photovoltaic (OPV) community that subtle variations in the molecular structure of active layer materials would cause profound impacts on their aggregating structure and blend morphology and therefore the performance of such polymer solar cells (PSCs). Herein, we employed an electron-deficient building block 3,6-dithiophenyl-2-carboxylate pyrazine (DTCPz) for constructing one series of promising donor terpolymers of PMZ1, PMZ2, and PMZ3, respectively, gaining their relatively lower-lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels, more closed π-π stacking and enhanced crystallinity in thin films, and lower miscibility with acceptor Y6, in comparison with their parent polymer counterpart (namely PM6). Reaching DTCPz moieties up to 20% (mol/mol%) in its terpolymer composition, the resulting polymer (PMZ2) achieved more favorable phase separation with improved exciton dissociation, and charge transport and extraction. As a result, an outstanding fill factor of 77.2% and a promising power conversion efficiency of 17.8 % was achieved. Moreover, the corresponding device shows better thermal stability over the PM6-based one. This work suggests a facile method for significantly improving the thin film morphology of the active-layer materials via fine-tuning the chemical structure of electron-deficient units on the backbone of the wide bandgap donor polymer, therefore achieving enhanced photovoltaic performance and thermal stability for practical applications.

  • Ingår i: Cancer Science. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1347-9032 .- 1349-7006. ; 114:6, s. 2360-2374

    • Recent studies have reported that Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn) is associated with gastric cancer (GC). Cancer-derived exosomes contain key regulatory noncoding RNAs and are a crucial medium of intercellular communication. However, the function and regulatory mechanism of exosomes (Fn-GCEx) secreted from Fn-infected GC cells remains unclear. In this study, Fn-GCEx enhanced the proliferation, migration, and invasion capacity of GC cells in vitro, as well as tumor growth and metastasis in vivo. HOTTIP was also upregulated in GC cells treated with Fn-GCEx. Moreover, knockdown of HOTTIP weakened the effects of Fn-GCEx in recipient GC cells. Mechanistically, HOTTIP promoted EphB2 expression by sponging microRNA (miR)-885-3p, thus activating the PI3K/AKT pathway in Fn-GCEx treated GC cells. Overall, Fn infection induced the upregulation of exosomal HOTTIP from GC cells that subsequently promoted GC progression through the miR-885-3p/EphB2/PI3K/AKT axis. Herein, we identify a potential molecular pathway and therapeutic target for GC.

  • Ingår i: Chem. - : Elsevier BV. - 2451-9308 .- 2451-9294. ; 7:6, s. 1544-1556
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tuning molecular emission by chemicalmeans has long been a fundamental topic, because the emerging methodologies and mechanisms of this topic usually bring a lot of opportunities in many multi-disciplinary applications. Here, we demonstrate the reversible switching of a conformation-adaptive fluorophore, 9,14-diphenyl-9,14-dihydrodibenzo[ a,c]phenazine (DPAC), by incorporating this fluorescent unit into a mechanically interlocked [2]catenane. Taking advantage of the mechanical bond of [2]catenane, the conformational freedom of the DPAC-macrocycle can be modulated by the co-conformational state of the [2]catenane, thus enabling the reversible switching of the fluorescent properties of DPAC. Owing to the mechanically interlocked structure, this fluorescent molecular system can be switched in a dual-mode (wavelength or intensity), visually recognizable, and highly reversible manner. This work provides a distinctmechanism of switchingmolecular emission by modulating conformation-adaptive fluorescent systems in mechanically interlocked structures.

    • A perfect PtCu nanocube with partial hollow structure was prepared by hydrothermal reaction and its electrocatalytic methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) was studied. The appropriate concentration of shape-control additives KI and triblock pluronic copolymers, poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO19-PPO69-PEO19) (P123) play crucial roles in the final product morphology. The PtCu nanocubes can be perfectly in situ immobilizedonto graphene under the action of P123 while the structure and cubic morphologyremain unchanged. The electrochemical tests suggest that the obtained PtCu nanocube (PtCu-NCb) exhibits better MOR activity and stability than PtCu hexagon nanosheet (PtCu-NSt), PtCu nanoellipsoid (PtCu-NEs) and commercial Pt/C in alkaline medium. When in situ immobilized onto graphene, the MOR catalytic activity and stability of PtCu cubes are further improved. The markedly enhanced electrocatalytic activity and durability maybe attributed to the special cubic morphology with partial hollow structure enclosed by highly efficient facet and the probably the synergistic effect of PtCu and intermediate state CuI decorated on the surface and graphene.

    • We introduce a high quality proxy for bank misconduct that is constructed from Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) complaint data. We employ this proxy to measure the impact of bank misconduct on the expansion of online lending in the United States. Using nearly complete loan and application data from the online lending market, we demonstrate that bank misconduct is associated with a statistically and economically significant increase in online lending demand at the state and county levels. This result is robust to the inclusion of bank credit supply shocks and holds for both broader and more narrowly-defined bank misconduct‘ measures. Furthermore, we show that this effect is strongest for lower rated borrowers and weakest in states with high levels of generalized trust.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new inorganic-organic hybrid material (C10H8N2H)2(Mo8O26) · 2NH4 (1) was prepared under solvothermal conditions (H2O/ethanol), which was then used as a starting material in the synthesis of another material, (C10H8N2Cu)2(Mo8O26) · 2NH4 (2). Each compound has been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, X-ray powder diffraction, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, fluorescence, FT-IR, and bond valence sum calculations. The comparative study focuses on the transformation and structural change between 1 and 2, which arises from the simple substitution of the proton in 1 with the Cu+ ions. The other surprising feature is that Cu+ ions can not only directly be used to substitute the proton of 1 but also ameliorate its photoluminescence property. It means that 1 appears to have recognizable functional protons in the solid-state structure and, hence, can very well be considered as an ideal precursor agent to design the functional materials with special architectures and photoactive properties.

    • A new species of Papaveraceae, Corydalis sunhangii, in the section Trachycarpae, is described and illustrated from Nyingchi City, Xizang, China. The new species has some resemblance to Corydalis kingdonis, but differs by radical leaves prominent, usually several, blade tripinnate (vs. insignificant, few, blade bi- to triternate); cauline leaf usually one, much smaller than radical leaves, usually situated in lower half of stem (vs. usually two, larger than radical leaves, concentrated in upper third of stem); racemes densely 13-35-flowered (vs. rather lax, 4-11-flowered); claw of lower petal shallowly saccate (vs. very prominently and deeply saccate); capsule oblong, with raised lines of dense papillae (vs. broadly obovoid, smooth). Phylogenetic analysis, based on 68 protein-coding plastid genes of 49 samples, shows that C. sunhangii is not closely related to any hitherto described species, which is consistent with our morphological analysis.

  • Computational fluid-structure interaction analysis of flapping uvula on aerodynamics and pharyngeal vibration in a pediatric airway
  • 2023

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The uvula flapping is one of the most distinctive features of snoring and is critical in affecting airway aerodynamics and vibrations. This study aimed to elucidate the mechanism of pharyngeal vibration and pressure fluctuation due to uvula flapping employing fluid-structure interaction simulations. The followings are the methodology part: we constructed an anatomically accurate pediatric pharynx model and put attention on the oropharynx region where the greatest level of upper airway compliance was reported to occur. The uvula was assumed to be a rigid body with specific flapping frequencies to guarantee proper boundary conditions with as little complexity as possible. The airway tissue was considered to have a uniform thickness. It was found that the flapping frequency had a more significant effect on the airway vibration than the flapping amplitude, as the flapping uvula influenced the pharyngeal aerodynamics by altering the jet flow from the mouth. Breathing only through the mouth could amplify the effect of flapping uvula on aerodynamic changes and result in more significant oropharynx vibration.

    • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has the potential for use as a clinical tool to predict the aerodynamics and respiratory function in the upper airway (UA) of children; however, careful selection of validated computational models is necessary. This study constructed a 3D model of the pediatric UA based on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging. The pediatric UA was 3D printed for pressure and velocity experiments, which were used as reference standards to validate the CFD simulation models. Static wall pressure and velocity distribution inside of the UA under inhale airflow rates from 0 to 266.67 mL/s were studied by CFD simulations based on the large eddy simulation (LES) model and four Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) models. Our results showed that the LES performed best for pressure prediction; however, it was much more time-consuming than the four RANS models. Among the RANS models, the Low Reynolds number (LRN) SST k-ω model had the best overall performance at a series of airflow rates. Central flow velocity determined by particle image velocimetry was 3.617 m/s, while velocities predicted by the LES, LRN SST k-ω, and k-ω models were 3.681, 3.532, and 3.439 m/s, respectively. All models predicted jet flow in the oropharynx. These results suggest that the above CFD models have acceptable accuracy for predicting pediatric UA aerodynamics and that the LRN SST k-ω model has the most potential for clinical application in pediatric respiratory studies.

  • Impact of palatopharyngeal sizes changing on pharyngeal airflow fluctuation and airway vibration in a pediatric airway

    • Snoring is common in children and is associated with many adverse consequences. One must study the relationships between pharyngeal morphology and snoring physics to understand snoring progression. Although some model studies have provided fluid–structure interaction dynamic descriptions for the correlation between airway size and snoring physics, the descriptions still need to be further investigated in patient-specific airway models. Fluid-structure interaction studies using patient-specific airway structures complement the above model studies. Based on reported cephalometric measurement methods, this study quantified and preset the size of the palatopharynx airway in a patient-specific airway and investigated how the palatopharynx size affects the pharyngeal airflow fluctuation, soft palate vibration, and glossopharynx vibration with the help of a verified FSI method. The results showed that the stenosis anterior airway of the soft palate increased airway resistance and airway resistance fluctuations, which can lead to increased sleep effort and frequent snoring. Widening of the anterior airway can reduce airflow resistance and avoid obstructing the anterior airway by the soft palate vibration. The pharyngeal airflow resistance, mouth inflow proportion, and soft palate apex displacement have components at the same frequencies in all airway models, and the glossopharynx vibration and instantaneous inflow rate have components at the same frequencies, too. The mechanism of this same frequency fluctuation phenomenon can be explained by the fluid–structure interaction dynamics of an ideal coupled model consisting of a flexible plate model and a collapsible tube model. The results of this study demonstrate the potential of FSI in studying snoring physics and clarify to some degree the mechanism of airway morphology affecting airway vibration physics.

    • Snoring is a common condition in the general population, and the management of snoring requires a better understanding of its mechanism through a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) perspective. Despite the recent popularity of numerical FSI techniques, outstanding challenges are accurately predicting airway deformation and its vibration during snoring due to complex airway morphology. In addition, there still needs to be more un-derstanding of snoring inhibition when lying on the side, and the possible effect of airflow rates, as well as nose or mouth-nose breathing, on snoring remains to be investigated. In this study, an FSI method verified against in vitro models was introduced to predict upper airway deformation and vibration. The technique was applied to predict airway aerodynamics, soft palate flutter, and airway vibration in four sleep postures (supine, left/right lying, and sitting positions) and four breathing patterns (mouth-nose, nose, mouth, and unilateral nose breathing). It was found that, at given elastic properties of soft tissues, the evaluated flutter frequency of 19.8 Hz in inspiration was in good agreement with the reported frequency of snoring sound in literature. Reduction in flutter and vibrations due to the mouth-nose airflow proportion changes were also noticed when having side-lying and sitting positions. Breathing through the mouth results in larger airway deformation than breathing through the nose or mouth-nose. These results collectively demonstrate the potential of FSI for studying the physics of airway vibration and clarify to some degree the reason for snoring inhibition during sleep postures and breathing patterns.

    • Although disinfection is key to infection control, the colonization patterns and resistomes of hospital-environment microbes remain underexplored. We report the first extensive genomic characterization of microbiomes, pathogens and antibiotic resistance cassettes in a tertiary-care hospital, from repeated sampling (up to 1.5 years apart) of 179 sites associated with 45 beds. Deep shotgun metagenomics unveiled distinct ecological niches of microbes and antibiotic resistance genes characterized by biofilm-forming and human-microbiome-influenced environments with corresponding patterns of spatiotemporal divergence. Quasi-metagenomics with nanopore sequencing provided thousands of high-contiguity genomes, phage and plasmid sequences (>60% novel), enabling characterization of resistome and mobilome diversity and dynamic architectures in hospital environments. Phylogenetics identified multidrug-resistant strains as being widely distributed and stably colonizing across sites. Comparisons with clinical isolates indicated that such microbes can persist in hospitals for extended periods (>8 years), to opportunistically infect patients. These findings highlight the importance of characterizing antibiotic resistance reservoirs in hospitals and establish the feasibility of systematic surveys to target resources for preventing infections. Spatiotemporal characterization of microbial diversity and antibiotic resistance in a tertiary-care hospital reveals broad distribution and persistence of antibiotic-resistant organisms that could cause opportunistic infections in a healthcare setting.

    • In this paper, a MnFe2O4-Cellulose magnetic composite aerogel (MnCA) with high adsorption capacity was fabricated by in situ incorporating MnFe2O4 to regenerated cellulose hydrogel matrix, followed by CO2 supercritical drying. A green synthetic strategy was performed by using renewable cellulose materials, environmentally benign cellulose solvents and facile synthetic conditions. The results showed that the obtained magnetic cellulose aerogel had a continuous and tiered three dimensional network with interconnected fibrils of about 30 nm in width, which was similar to those of cellulose aerogel prepared from NaOH/urea solution via CO2 supercritical drying. Meanwhile, they had high specific surface areas of 236-288 m(2)/g and total pore volume of 0.55-0.88 cm(3)/g. In addition, the hybrid aerogel showed superparamagnetism with maximum saturation magnetization reaching up to 18.53 emu/g. The magnetic nanocomposite aerogel could be used for biological and environmental applications. The adsorption test showed that MnCA had rapid adsorption rate and excellent adsorption ability of removing heavy metal ions in aqueous solution which could attain to 63.3 mg/g within 100 min. Moreover, all the composite aerogels exhibited good reusability and could be easily reused from the water after adsorption.

    • Circulating levels of adiponectin, a hormone produced predominantly by adipocytes, are highly heritable and are inversely associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) and other metabolic traits. We conducted a meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies in 39,883 individuals of European ancestry to identify genes associated with metabolic disease. We identified 8 novel loci associated with adiponectin levels and confirmed 2 previously reported loci (P=4.5 x 10(-8)-1.2 x 10(-43)). Using a novel method to combine data across ethnicities (N = 4,232 African Americans, N = 1,776 Asians, and N = 29,347 Europeans), we identified two additional novel loci. Expression analyses of 436 human adipocyte samples revealed that mRNA levels of 18 genes at candidate regions were associated with adiponectin concentrations after accounting for multiple testing (p<3 x 10(-4)). We next developed a multi-SNP genotypic risk score to test the association of adiponectin decreasing risk alleles on metabolic traits and diseases using consortia-level meta-analytic data. This risk score was associated with increased risk of T2D (p=4.3 x 10(-3), n = 22,044), increased triglycerides (p=2.6 x 10(-14), n = 93,440), increased waist-to-hip ratio (p=1.8 x 10(-5), n = 77,167), increased glucose two hours post oral glucose tolerance testing (p=4.4 x 10(-3), n = 15,234), increased fasting insulin (p = 0.015, n = 48,238), but with lower in HDL-cholesterol concentrations (p=4.5x10(-13), n = 96,748) and decreased BMI (p= 1.4 x 10(-14), n = 121,335). These findings identify novel genetic determinants of adiponectin levels, which, taken together, influence risk of T2D and markers of insulin resistance.

    • The Thermal Infrared Visual Object Tracking challenge 2016, VOT-TIR2016, aims at comparing short-term single-object visual trackers that work on thermal infrared (TIR) sequences and do not apply pre-learned models of object appearance. VOT-TIR2016 is the second benchmark on short-term tracking in TIR sequences. Results of 24 trackers are presented. For each participating tracker, a short description is provided in the appendix. The VOT-TIR2016 challenge is similar to the 2015 challenge, the main difference is the introduction of new, more difficult sequences into the dataset. Furthermore, VOT-TIR2016 evaluation adopted the improvements regarding overlap calculation in VOT2016. Compared to VOT-TIR2015, a significant general improvement of results has been observed, which partly compensate for the more difficult sequences. The dataset, the evaluation kit, as well as the results are publicly available at the challenge website.

  • Aerodynamic characteristics in upper airways among orthodontic patients and its association with adenoid nasopharyngeal ratios in lateral cephalograms
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: BMC Medical Imaging. - : BioMed Central. - 1471-2342. ; 21:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Adenoid hypertrophy among orthodontic patients may be detected in lateral cephalograms. The study investigates the aerodynamic characteristics within the upper airway (UA) by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. Furthermore, airflow features are compared between subgroups according to the adenoidal nasopharyngeal (AN) ratios. Methods This retrospective study included thirty-five patients aged 9-15 years having both lateral cephalogram and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging that covered the UA region. The cases were divided into two subgroups according to the AN ratios measured on the lateral cephalograms: Group 1 with an AN ratio < 0.6 and Group 2 with an AN ratio >= 0.6. Based on the CBCT images, segmented UA models were created and the aerodynamic characteristics at inspiration and expiration were simulated by the CFD method for the two groups. The studied aerodynamic parameters were pressure drop (Delta P), maximum midsagittal velocity (V-ms), maximum wall shear stress (P-ws), and minimum wall static pressure (P-w). Results The maximum V-ms exhibits nearly 30% increases in Group 2 at both inspiration (p = 0.013) and expiration (p = 0.045) compared to Group 1. For the other aerodynamic parameters such as Delta P, the maximum P-ws, and minimum P-w, no significant difference is found between the two groups. Conclusions The maximum V-ms seems to be the most sensitive aerodynamic parameter for the groups of cases. An AN ratio of more than 0.6 measured on a lateral cephalogram may associate with a noticeably increased maximum V-ms, which could assist clinicians in estimating the airflow features in the UA.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Pediatric Dentistry. - : JOURNAL PEDODONTICS INC. - 1053-4628 .- 1557-5268. ; 45:3, s. 208-215
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives The present study evaluated the effect of rapid maxillary expansion (RME) on the morphology of the upper airway (UA) by calculating cross-sectional areas and volumes and comparing the effect in patients with a normal-sized adenoid with the effect in patients with an enlarged adenoid. Study design: Seventeen patients met the inclusion criteria. We constructed 3D models of the UA on cone-beam computed tomography images to calculate cross-sectional areas and volumes at the levels of the nasopharyngeal, retropalatal, and retroglossal airways. Patients were divided into two groups: group 1 was comprised of patients with an adenoidal nasopharyngeal (AN) ratio < 0.6 and group 2 with an AN ratio >= 0.6. Paired samples t-tests assessed any area and volumetric changes of the UA after RME. Changes in degree of nasal obstruction, calculated as the AN ratio, was then compared for the two groups. An independent samples t-test compared volumetric changes in the nasopharynx between the two groups before and after RME. Results Changes in cross-sectional areas and volumes of the UA due to RME were not significant. The effects of RME on AN ratio (11 % vs 0 %) and nasopharyngeal volume (36.8 % vs 5.97%) were somewhat larger in group 2 patients who had adenoid-associated nasal obstruction compared with group 1 patients with a normal-sized adenoid; however, the differences were not significant. Conclusions After RME, the patients with an enlarged adenoid had more increases in nasopharyngeal volume compared with those with normal adenoid, despite there was no significant difference.

    • BackgroundThe effect of rapid maxillary expansion (RME) on the upper airway (UA) has been studied earlier but without a consistent conclusion. This study aims to evaluate the outcome of RME on the UA function in terms of aerodynamic characteristics by applying a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation.MethodsThis retrospective cohort study consists of seventeen cases with two consecutive CBCT scans obtained before (T0) and after (T1) RME. Patients were divided into two groups with respect to patency of the nasopharyngeal airway as expressed in the adenoidal nasopharyngeal ratio (AN): group 1 was comprised of patients with an AN ratio<0.6 and group 2 encompassing those with an AN ratio0.6. CFD simulation at inspiration and expiration were performed based on the three-dimensional (3D) models of the UA segmented from the CBCT images. The aerodynamic characteristics in terms of pressure drop (Delta P), maximum midsagittal velocity (V-ms), and maximum wall shear stress (P-ws) were compared by paired t-test and Wilcoxon test according to the normality test at T0 and T1.ResultsThe aerodynamic characteristics in UA revealed no statistically significant difference after RME. The maximum V-ms (m/s) decreased from 2.79 to 2.28 at expiration after RME (P=0.057).ConclusionThe aerodynamic characteristics were not significantly changed after RME. Further CFD studies with more cases are warranted.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Autologous grafting, despite some disadvantages, is still considered the gold standard for reconstruction of maxillofacial bone defects. The aim of this study was to evaluate bone regeneration using bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) in a clinical trial, a less invasive approach than autologous bone grafting. This comprehensive clinical trial included subjects with severe mandibular ridge resorption. Methods: The study included 11 subjects aged 52-79 years with severe mandibular ridge resorption. Bone marrow cells were aspirated from the posterior iliac crest and plastic adherent cells were expanded in culture medium containing human platelet lysate. The MSCs and biphasic calcium phosphate granules as scaffolds were inserted subperiosteally onto the resorbed alveolar ridge. After 4-6 months of healing, new bone formation was assessed clinically and radiographically, as were safety and feasibility. Bone at the implant site was biopsied for micro computed topography and histological analyses and dental implants were placed in the newly regenerated bone. Functional outcomes and patient satisfaction were assessed after 12 months. Results: The bone marrow cells, expanded in vitro and inserted into the defect together with biphasic calcium phosphate granules, induced significant new bone formation. The regenerated bone volume was adequate for dental implant installation. Healing was uneventful, without adverse events. The patients were satisfied with the esthetic and functional outcomes. No side effects were observed. Conclusions: The results of this comprehensive clinical trial in human subjects confirm that MSCs can successfully induce significant formation of new bone, with no untoward sequelae. Hence, this novel augmentation procedure warrants further investigation and may form the basis of a valid treatment protocol, challenging the current gold standard.

  • Inheritance patterns of the transcriptome in hybrid chickens and their parents revealed by expression analysis
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although many phenotypic traits of chickens have been well documented, the genetic patterns of gene expression levels in chickens remain to be determined. In the present study, we crossed two chicken breeds, White Leghorn (WL) and Cornish (Cor), which have been selected for egg and meat production, respectively, for a few hundred years. We evaluated transcriptome abundance in the brain, muscle, and liver from the day-old progenies of pure-bred WL and Cor, and the hybrids of these two breeds, by RNA-Seq in order to determine the inheritance patterns of gene expression. Comparison among expression levels in the different groups revealed that most of the genes showed conserved expression patterns in all three examined tissues and that brain had the highest number of conserved genes, which indicates that conserved genes are predominantly important compared to others. On the basis of allelic expression analysis, in addition to the conserved genes, we identified the extensive presence of additive, dominant (Cor dominant and WL dominant), over-dominant, and under-dominant genes in all three tissues in hybrids. Our study is the first to provide an overview of inheritance patterns of the transcriptome in layers and broilers, and we also provide insights into the genetics of chickens at the gene expression level.

  • An iterative approach for the exact solution of the pairing Hamiltonian
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Computer Physics Communications. - : Elsevier BV. - 0010-4655 .- 1879-2944. ; 275
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new iterative algorithm is established for the exact solution of the standard pairing problem, based on the Richardson-Gaudin method using the polynomial approach. It provides efficient and robust solutions for both spherical and deformed systems at a large scale. The key to its success is that the initial guess for the solutions of such a large set of the non-linear equations is provided in a physically meaningful and controllable manner. Moreover, one reduces the large-dimensional problem to a one-dimensional Monte Carlo sampling procedure, which improves the algorithm's efficiency and avoids the non-solutions and numerical instabilities that persist in most existing approaches. We calculated the ground state and low-lying excited states of equally spaced systems at different pairing strengths G. We then applied the model to study the quantum phase transitional Sm isotopes and the actinide nuclei Pu isotopes, where an excellent agreement with experimental data is obtained. Program summary Program Title: IterV1.m CPC Library link to program files: https://doi.org/10.17632/rjnbhgk2p6.1 Licensing provisions: GPLv3 Programming language: Mathematica Nature of problem: The program calculates exact pairing energies based on a new iterative algorithm. The key is the procedure of determining the initial guesses for the large-set non-linear equations involved in a controllable and physically motivated manner. It provides an efficient and robust solver for both spherical and deformed systems in super large model spaces. Solution method: The new iterative algorithm approach starts with simple systems with knucleon pairs and n = klevels, which can be solved iteratively by including one pair and one level at each step using the Newton-Raphson algorithm with a Monte Carlo sampling procedure. Then it takes the solutions of those systems as initial values and obtain the converged results for the full space by gradually adding the remaining levels. In this way, one reduces the k-dimensional Monte Carlo sampling procedure to a one-dimensional sampling, which improves the efficiency of the algorithm and avoids the non-solutions and numerical instabilities.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: IEEE transactions on intelligent transportation systems (Print). - : IEEE. - 1524-9050 .- 1558-0016. ; , s. 1-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Autonomous vehicles (AVs) are being enhanced by introducing wireless communication to improve their intelligence, reliability and efficiency. Despite all of these distinct advantages, the open wireless communication links and connectivity make the AVs' vulnerability to cyber-attacks. This paper proposes an L-2 -gain-based resilient path following control strategy for AVs under time-constrained denial-of-service (DoS) attacks and external interference. A switching-like path following control model of AVs is first built in the presence of DoS attacks, which is characterized by the lower and upper bounds of the sleeping period and active period of the DoS attacker. Then, the exponential stability and L-2 -gain performance of the resulting switched system are analyzed by using a time-varying Lyapunov function method. On the basis of the obtained analysis results, L-2 -gain-based resilient controllers are designed to achieve an acceptable path-following performance despite the presence of such DoS attacks. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed L-2 -gain-based resilient path following control method is confirmed by the simulation results obtained for the considered AVs model with different DoS attack parameters.

  • Ingår i: Cellular Oncology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2211-3428 .- 2211-3436. ; 46:4, s. 953-967
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: Available evidence indicates that dipyridamole enhances the anti-thrombotic effects of aspirin for the prevention of secondary strokes. Aspirin is a well-known non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug. This anti-inflammatory property has turned aspirin into a potential drug for inflammation-related cancers such as colorectal cancer (CRC). Here, we aimed to explore whether the anti-cancer effect of aspirin against CRC could be improved by combined administration with dipyridamole.METHODS: Population-based clinical data analysis was conducted to assess a possible therapeutic effect of combined dipyridamole and aspirin treatment in inhibiting CRC compared with either monotherapy. This therapeutic effect was further verified in different CRC mouse models, i.e. an orthotopic xenograft mouse model, an AOM/DSS mouse model, an Apc min/+ mouse model and a patient derived xenograft (PDX) mouse model. The in vitro effects of the drugs on CRC cells were tested using CCK8 and flow cytometry assays. RNA-Seq, Western blotting, qRT-PCR and flow cytometry were used to identify the underlying molecular mechanisms. RESULTS: We found that dipyridamole combined with aspirin had a better inhibitory effect on CRC than either monotherapy alone. The enhanced anti-cancer effect of the combined use of dipyridamole with aspirin was found to rely on the induction of an overwhelmed endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and subsequent pro-apoptotic unfolded protein response (UPR), which was different from the anti-platelet effect.CONCLUSIONS: Our data indicate that the anti-cancer effect of aspirin against CRC may be enhanced by combined administration with dipyridamole. In case further clinical studies confirm our findings, these may be repurposed as adjuvant agents.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Protein adsorption onto implant surfaces is of great importance for the regulation of implant bioactivity. Surface modification of implants is a promising way in the molecular design of biocompatible materials against nonspecific adsorption of proteins. On the basis of these fundamental facts, we focus in this work on the different behavior of protein adsorption on hydroxylated and nonhydroxylated rutile TiO2 (110) surfaces through molecular dynamics simulations. Our investigation indicates that the distribution of the water molecules at the interface induced by the surface modification plays an important role in the protein adsorption. The surface with modified hydroxyl groups was observed to have much greater affinity to the protein, as reflected by the larger protein-surface electrostatic interaction and by the larger amount of adsorbed residues. The highly ordered structure of the modified hydroxyl groups on the hydroxylated surface diminishes the possibility of hydrogen bond formation between the surface and the water molecules above it, which in turn makes it easier for the protein to move closer to the surface with hydroxyl modification.

    • The Visual Object Tracking challenge 2015, VOT2015, aims at comparing short-term single-object visual trackers that do not apply pre-learned models of object appearance. Results of 62 trackers are presented. The number of tested trackers makes VOT 2015 the largest benchmark on short-term tracking to date. For each participating tracker, a short description is provided in the appendix. Features of the VOT2015 challenge that go beyond its VOT2014 predecessor are: (i) a new VOT2015 dataset twice as large as in VOT2014 with full annotation of targets by rotated bounding boxes and per-frame attribute, (ii) extensions of the VOT2014 evaluation methodology by introduction of a new performance measure. The dataset, the evaluation kit as well as the results are publicly available at the challenge website(1).

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A highly efficient photocoupling agent, based on perfluorophenylazide (PFPA)-conjugated polyallylamine (PAAm), was developed for the efficient immobilization of polymers, nanoparticles, graphene, and small molecules. The conjugate, PAAm–PFPA, was synthesized, and the percentage of the photoactive moiety, PFPA, can be controlled by the ratio of the two components in the synthesis. By treating epoxy-functionalized wafers with PAAm–PFPA, photoactive surfaces were generated. Compared with the PFPA surface, these polymer-based photocoupling matrix resulted in significantly enhanced immobilization efficiencies, especially for nanomaterials and small molecules. Thus, polystyrene nanoparticles (PS NPs) and alkyl-functionalized silica nanoparticles (SNPs) were successfully immobilized on the PAAm–PFPA surface, resulting in a high material density. Graphene flakes patterned on the PAAm–PFPA surface showed improved feature resolution in addition to a higher material density compared to that of flakes immobilized on the PFPA surface. Furthermore, 2-O-α-d-mannopyranosyl-d-mannopyranose (Man2) immobilized on the PAAm–PFPA surface exhibited significantly enhanced signals when treated with lectin concanavalin A (Con A).

    • A global international initiative, such as the Earth BioGenome Project (EBP), requires both agreement and coordination on standards to ensure that the collective effort generates rapid progress toward its goals. To this end, the EBP initiated five technical standards committees comprising volunteer members from the global genomics scientific community: Sample Collection and Processing, Sequencing and Assembly, Annotation, Analysis, and IT and Informatics. The current versions of the resulting standards documents are available on the EBP website, with the recognition that opportunities, technologies, and challenges may improve or change in the future, requiring flexibility for the EBP to meet its goals. Here, we describe some highlights from the proposed standards, and areas where additional challenges will need to be met.

  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the continuous development of human-centric, resilient, and sustainable manufacturing towards Industry 5.0, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has gradually unveiled new opportunities for additional functionalities, new features, and tendencies in the industrial landscape. On the other hand, the technology-driven Industry 4.0 paradigm is still in full swing. However, there exist many unreasonable designs, configurations, and implementations of Industrial Artificial Intelligence (IndAI) in practice before achieving either Industry 4.0 or Industry 5.0 vision, and a significant gap between the individualized requirement and actual implementation result still exists. To provide insights for designing appropriate models and algorithms in the upgrading process of the industry, this perspective article classifies IndAI by rating the intelligence levels and presents four principles of implementing IndAI. Three significant opportunities of IndAI, namely, collaborative intelligence, self-learning intelligence, and crowd intelligence, towards Industry 5.0 vision are identified to promote the transition from a technology-driven initiative in Industry 4.0 to the coexistence and interplay of Industry 4.0 and a value-oriented proposition in Industry 5.0. Then, pathways for implementing IndAI towards Industry 5.0 together with key empowering techniques are discussed. Social barriers, technology challenges, and future research directions of IndAI are concluded, respectively. We believe that our effort can lay a foundation for unlocking the power of IndAI in futuristic Industry 5.0 research and engineering practice.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A multifunctional bis-branched [1]rotaxane containing a perylene bisimide (PBI) core and two identical bistable[1]rotaxane arms terminated with ferrocene units was prepared and characterized by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, and 2D ROESY NMR spectroscopies and by HR-ESI spectrometry. The system is shown to possess several key features: (1) In acetone solution, external acid base stimuli can result in relative mechanical movements of its ring and thread, which can induce extension and contraction movements of the whole system accompanied by a rotational movement of the ferrocene units, thus realizing dual-mode molecular motions, and the optimized conformations at different states are obtained through molecular dynamics simulations employing the general Amber force field. (2) The introduction of PBI enables the system fluorescence encoding through distance-dependent photoinduced electron transfer process from the ferrocene units to the PBI fluorophore. (3) The addition of Zn2+ can increase the degree of aggregation of the system, while adding base hinders aggregation because of the movement of the macrocyde. The tunable aggregated nanostructural morphologies of [1]rotaxane were examined by scanning electron microscopy. These results can pave the way to achieve precise control of integrated and coupling nanomechanical motions at a single-molecule level and provide more insight into controlling the aggregate behavior of switchable mechanically interlocked molecules.

  • Photochromic Diarylethenes with Heterocyclic Aromatic Rings : Correlation between Thermal Bistability and Geometrical Characters of Transition States

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a density functional theory study on the thermal bistability of a number of photochromic diarylethenes, with emphasis on the free energy barrier of the ground-state ring-opening process. We found that the free energy barrier is correlated with the geometrical and vibrational character of the transition state, in particular the distance between the two reactive carbon atoms, the out-of-plane angles of the methyl groups at the reactive carbon atoms, and the imaginary vibrational frequency. Based on these relationships we propose a linear fitting expression for the free energy barrier in terms of the three aforementioned transition-state quantities and obtained a correlation coefficient of R-2 = 0.971. In this way quantum chemical calculations may provide insight and structure property relationships, which can be applied in the development of novel photochromic materials.

  • Genome-wide association scan meta-analysis identifies three Loci influencing adiposity and fat distribution.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To identify genetic loci influencing central obesity and fat distribution, we performed a meta-analysis of 16 genome-wide association studies (GWAS, N = 38,580) informative for adult waist circumference (WC) and waist-hip ratio (WHR). We selected 26 SNPs for follow-up, for which the evidence of association with measures of central adiposity (WC and/or WHR) was strong and disproportionate to that for overall adiposity or height. Follow-up studies in a maximum of 70,689 individuals identified two loci strongly associated with measures of central adiposity; these map near TFAP2B (WC, P = 1.9x10(-11)) and MSRA (WC, P = 8.9x10(-9)). A third locus, near LYPLAL1, was associated with WHR in women only (P = 2.6x10(-8)). The variants near TFAP2B appear to influence central adiposity through an effect on overall obesity/fat-mass, whereas LYPLAL1 displays a strong female-only association with fat distribution. By focusing on anthropometric measures of central obesity and fat distribution, we have identified three loci implicated in the regulation of human adiposity.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an efficient program for the exact diagonalization solution of the pairing Hamiltonian in spherical systems with rotational invariance based on the SU(2) quasi-spin algebra. The basis vectors with quasi-spin symmetry considered are generated by using an iterative algorithm. Then the Hamiltonian matrix constructed on this basis is diagonalized with the Lanczos algorithm. All non-zero matrix elements of the Hamiltonian matrix are evaluated "on the fly" by the scattering operator and hash search acting on the basis vectors. The OpenMP parallel program thus developed, PairDiagSph, can efficiently calculate the ground-state eigenvalue and eigenvector of general spherical pairing Hamiltonians. Systems with dimension up to 10(8) can be calculated in few hours on standard desktop computers. Program summary Program Title: PairDiagSph. • Scalable spectrally selective mid-infrared meta-absorbers for advanced radiative thermal engineering

  • Ingår i: Physical Chemistry, Chemical Physics - PCCP. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1463-9076 .- 1463-9084. ; 22:25, s. 13965-13974
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Metamaterials with spectrally selective absorptance operating in the mid-infrared range have attracted much interest in numerous applications. However, it remains a challenge to economically fabricate scalable meta-absorbers with tailorable absorptance bands. This work demonstrates a conceptually simple and low-cost yet effective design strategy to achieve spectrally selective absorption with tailorable band positions at MIR by colloidal lithography. The strategy ingeniously uses residual diameter fluctuations of circular resonators etched through monodisperse colloidal particles for achieving superposition of multiple magnetic resonances and thereby a more than doubled absorption band, which is neglected in previous works. The proposed meta-absorber features densely packed thick aluminum resonators with a rather narrow diameter distribution and enhanced capacitive coupling among them. Moreover, the tailorability of the absorption band can be achieved by a parameterized variation in the fabrication process. As a proof of concept, infrared stealth and radiative cooling are demonstrated based on our meta-absorbers. The design and fabrication strategy create versatile metamaterials for advanced radiative thermal engineering.

  • New loci for body fat percentage reveal link between adiposity and cardiometabolic disease risk
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To increase our understanding of the genetic basis of adiposity and its links to cardiometabolic disease risk, we conducted a genome-wide association meta-analysis of body fat percentage (BF%) in up to 100,716 individuals. Twelve loci reached genome-wide significance (P<5 × 10(-8)), of which eight were previously associated with increased overall adiposity (BMI, BF%) and four (in or near COBLL1/GRB14, IGF2BP1, PLA2G6, CRTC1) were novel associations with BF%. Seven loci showed a larger effect on BF% than on BMI, suggestive of a primary association with adiposity, while five loci showed larger effects on BMI than on BF%, suggesting association with both fat and lean mass. In particular, the loci more strongly associated with BF% showed distinct cross-phenotype association signatures with a range of cardiometabolic traits revealing new insights in the link between adiposity and disease risk.

  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - : AMER CHEMICAL SOC. - 1530-6984 .- 1530-6992. ; 21:8, s. 3426-3434
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-index semiconductor nanoantennae represent a powerful platform for nonlinear photon generation. Devices with reduced footprints are pivotal for higher integration capacity and energy efficiency in photonic integrated circuitry (PIC). Here, we report on a deep subwavelength nonlinear antenna based on dilute nitride GaNP nanowires (NWs), whose second harmonic generation (SHG) shows a 5-fold increase by incorporating similar to 0.45% of nitrogen (N), in comparison with GaP counterpart. Further integrating with a gold (Au) thin film-based hybrid cavity achieves a significantly boosted SHG output by a factor of similar to 380, with a nonlinear conversion efficiency up to 9.4 x 10(-6) W-1. In addition, high-density zinc blende (ZB) twin phases were found to tailor the nonlinear radiation profile via dipolar interference, resulting in a highly symmetric polarimetric pattern well-suited for coupling with polarization nano-optics. Our results manifest dilute nitride nanoantenna as promising building blocks for future chip-based nonlinear photonic technology.
