  • Public awareness, emotional reactions and human mobility in response to the COVID-19 outbreak in China : a population-based ecological study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Psychological Medicine. - : Cambridge University Press. - 0033-2917 .- 1469-8978. ; 52:9, s. 1793-1800
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The outbreak of COVID-19 generated severe emotional reactions, and restricted mobility was a crucial measure to reduce the spread of the virus. This study describes the changes in public emotional reactions and mobility patterns in the Chinese population during the COVID-19 outbreak. Methods: We collected data on public emotional reactions in response to the outbreak through Weibo, the Chinese Twitter, between January 1st and March 31st, 2020. Using anonymized location-tracking information, we analyzed the daily mobility patterns of approximately 90% of Sichuan residents. Results: There were three distinct phases of the emotional and behavioral reactions to the COVID-19 outbreak. The alarm phase (January 19th –26th) was a restriction-free period, characterized by few new daily cases, but enormous public negative emotions (the number of negative comments per Weibo post increased by 246.9 per day, 95%CI: 122.5–371.3), and a substantial increase in self-limiting mobility (from 45.6% to 54.5%, changing by 1.5% per day, 95%CI: 0.7%–2.3%). The epidemic phase (January 27th –February 15th) exhibited rapidly increasing numbers of new daily cases, decreasing expression of negative emotions (a decrease of 27.3 negative comments per post per day, 95%CI: −40.4–−14.2), and a stabilized level of self-limiting mobility. The relief phase (February 16th –March 31st) had a steady decline in new daily cases and decreasing levels of negative emotion and self-limiting mobility. Conclusions: During the COVID-19 outbreak in China, the public’s emotional reaction was strongest before the actual peak of the outbreak and declined thereafter. The change in human mobility patterns occurred before the implementation of restriction orders, suggesting a possible link between emotion and behavior.

  • Phase change and combustion of iron particles in premixed CH4/O2/N2 flames
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Combustion and Flame. - 0010-2180. ; 259
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Metal powder is a promising carbon-free and recyclable energy carrier. Direct combustion of the micron-sized iron particles involves complex physical and chemical processes, such as heat transfer, surface reaction, and phase change. In this work, computational modelling of these processes is investigated and validated against experiments. A single iron particle combustion and phase change model is proposed in an Eulerian–Lagrangian framework. The new phenomenological model considers five stages, i.e., solid phase oxidation, melting of iron oxides and raw iron, liquid phase oxidation, cooling of liquid iron oxides, and solidification of super-cooled liquid iron oxides. The proposed model is first validated and then adopted in simulations of micron-sized iron particle combustion in premixed CH4/O2/N2 flames to study the effects of ambient temperature and oxygen concentration on single iron combustion. Results show that the new model is capable of replicating the melting, heterogeneous surface reaction, cooling, and solidification processes. Two-stage solidification is observed in experiments and modelled in simulations. This two-stage solidification includes a fast solidification with a significant temperature rise (∼150–200 K) and a thermal equilibrium solidification featuring a constant temperature and a slight particle radiant intensity decrease. In addition, a diffusion-controlled mechanism is identified during the melting process, in which the oxygen concentration dominates the melting time and the subsequent burning time. Furthermore, it is found that the reaction between iron and CH4/O2/N2 flame products, such as CO2 and H2O, plays a non-negligible role in the iron combustion process.

  • Genomic investigation of the Chinese alligator reveals wild-extinct genetic diversity and genomic consequences of their continuous decline
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Molecular Ecology Resources. - : Wiley. - 1755-098X .- 1755-0998. ; 23:1, s. 294-311

    • Critically endangered species are usually restricted to small and isolated populations. High inbreeding without gene flow among populations further aggravates their threatened condition and reduces the likelihood of their long-term survival. Chinese alligator (Alligator sinensis) is one of the most endangered crocodiles in the world and has experienced a continuous decline over the past c. 1 million years. In order to identify the genetic status of the remaining populations and aid conservation efforts, we assembled the first high-quality chromosome-level genome of Chinese alligator and explored the genomic characteristics of three extant breeding populations. Our analyses revealed the existence of at least three genetically distinct populations, comprising two breeding populations in China (Changxing and Xuancheng) and one breeding population in an American wildlife refuge. The American population does not belong to the last two populations of its native range (Xuancheng and Changxing), thus representing genetic diversity extinct in the wild and provides future opportunities for genetic rescue. Moreover, the effective population size of these three populations has been continuously declining over the past 20 ka. Consistent with this decline, the species shows extremely low genetic diversity, a large proportion of long runs of homozygous fragments, and mutational load across the genome. Finally, to provide genomic insights for future breeding management and conservation, we assessed the feasibility of mixing extant populations based on the likelihood of introducing new deleterious alleles and signatures of local adaptation. Overall, this study provides a valuable genomic resource and important genomic insights into the ecology, evolution, and conservation of critically endangered alligators.
