  • Differentiating the time-geography of recreational running
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Mobilities. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1745-0101 .- 1745-011X. ; 15:4, s. 575-587
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper proposes a relational time-geography approach to differentiate the geographies of recreational activities, whose place cannot be pinned down to a single specific infrastructure or area and therefore risks being marginalised in planning. Running is used as a case study. Based on diary-interviews, we have identified three different exercises/places used alternately by the respondents: the forest run; ‘the most boring route in the world’; and the tourist run. We argue that the time-geography of runners could be conceptualised as a rhythm of place dependencies, where different places afford complementary qualities. By allowing for a negotiation of the spatio-temporal constraints of everyday life, these different places (and their affordances) are of crucial importance for motivation and exercise.

  • Evaluating soundscape intentions in landscape architecture: a study of competition entries for a new cemetery in Järva, Stockholm
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Environmental Planning and Management. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0964-0568 .- 1360-0559. ; 60, s. 1253-1275
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While soundscape is increasingly acknowledged within landscape planning and design discourse, there is little research that clarifies how soundscapes are actually dealt with in landscape architecture practice - partly owing to methodological insufficiencies. This paper, therefore, describes a model for evaluating soundscape treatment in landscape design proposals, focusing on three key aspects. With the dual aim of testing the model, and learning more about how soundscape is approached in practice, the paper spotlights a major design competition for a new cemetery in Sweden. The model proved fruitful and easy to apply. It showed that only limited attention was paid to soundscape in the competition as a whole, and was a useful means of pinpointing proposals where soundscape was fully considered as a design feature; one competition entry that did so is described in the paper. Discussions cover design practice, trends in the competition and model application.

  • Stadsodling – reflektioner och perspektiv från SLU Alnarp
  • 2012

  • Situating the silence of recreation in transit-oriented development
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Planning Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1356-3475 .- 1469-9265. ; 27, s. 411-424
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Transit-oriented development (TOD) is a prominent planning model that connects sustainable mobilities with land use. While this interface is crucial for sustainable development, it also requires, we argue, that all typesof mobilities are considered. Therefore, this paper scrutinises how recreation and its mobilities have been studied within academic TOD literature. The review reveals a small number of studies of recreation, and by paying attention to their diverse geographical settings the scattered knowledge becomes even more apparent. Thereafter, to illustrate the consequences and situate our reading, we offer a place-based critique of the TOD planning in a Swedish city. The case captures how policies silence local resourcesfor recreation, not least by misinterpreting the modernist planning legacy. Finally, we argue that integrating recreation in the TOD model is as important as it is challenging: it requires a reconsideration of the urban ideal that TOD relies upon.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: LTV-fakultetens faktablad.
  • Annan publikation (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract

  • Negotiating asymmetric borders in an emerging soft region
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Planning Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0965-4313 .- 1469-5944. ; 30, s. 2353-2372
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In contemporary planning, the development of soft regions through inter-municipal collaborations plays an increasingly important role. However, as previous research has shown, local borders and local jurisdiction are likely to remain as part and parcel of the new region. This paper argues the need to consider the geography of such local borders, to reveal asymmetries which could weaken the opportunities for inter-municipal collaboration. Following relational geography, we argue that the municipalities don't necessarily share the same border; if understood as a relational effect, the border plays different roles for each municipality. With this in mind, we offer a case study of how a Swedish local border is being negotiated within planning. The case of Kumla and Hallsberg reveals how one municipality is active in trying to negotiate the border, whereas the other procrastinates around any action which do not lie in their interest. The result is a border haunted by decades of poorly coordinated, even provocative, planning actions. Our study opens up for a discussion on asymmetries and a relational understanding of the geography (and history) of planning, as well as for further studies of the interplay between the renegotiation of the local borders within emerging soft regions.

  • Järnmalm, ödehus och framtidstro : En studie om kommunal planering i norrländsk landsbygd
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Municipal planning concerns supporting broader socio-economic interests that are linked to place-based resources, whilst promoting local development for the inhabitants. By protecting and utilizing the resources, it is assumed that they will benefit the wider society rather than an individual actor or interest – the resources become public socio-economic interests. Place-based resources such as minerals and desolate houses are also tied to land and specific places. They are often found in rural areas that have long struggled with demographic challenges such as negative population growth. Against the background of the tension between supporting public socio-economic interests whilst considering the interest of the local people, this thesis aims to examine how and under what conditions municipal planning takes place in rural areas with place-based resources and at the same time have negative population development. In the thesis, I use a northern Swedish rural municipality as a case to explore how this tension is played out. As a theoretical perspective, I use Deleuze’s and Guattari's (1987) view of desire as productive by producing assemblages of interest within which municipal planning is formed and transformed (cf. Beauregard 2020). The results of the study show that municipal planning in rural areas with place-based resources and negative population growth is shaped by socio-economic interests which are renegotiated into local interests. Through this renegotiation process the planning is formed through the desire to create population growth through the extraction of the place-based resources.  The thesis concludes that municipal planning in rural areas with place-based resources and negative population development is shaped through both the desire in place-based resources and the lack of desire. This demonstrates the need of further research in how these municipalities can handle the great uncertainties that the growing and fleeting desire in place-based resources create.

  • Lingering landscapes: an examination of the heterogeneous remains of welfare planning
  • 2018
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper explores how landscape can be used as a lens to understand lingering as a geographical concept. Following the European Landscape Convention, landscape is defined as “an area, as perceived by people, whose character is the result of the action and interaction of natural and/or human factors”. Thus, landscape assembles practices, perceptions and natural processes in an a-modern manner; this heterogeneity also affects its dynamics and ability to transcend the here and now of our activities. By studying the heritage of the landscape politics of the Swedish welfare society in the 1970s, we aim to illustrate how landscape and theories of landscape provides a richer understanding of lingering. This paper examines how the Swedish welfare planning of the 1970s lingers, not only in materialized structures and artefacts, but also in everyday practices and representations. The study focuses in particular on leisure planning, using examples from a Swedish town. This case is used to discuss how to understand lingering through landscape theory, how lingering actively is made by both presences of the past and attention to the past in the present by, for instance, maintenance and repair.

  • Ingår i: Geografiska Annaler, Series B: Human Geography. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1468-0467 .- 0435-3684. ; 104:3, s. 185-191
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • he history and legacy of green planning of the welfare era have largely been overlooked within research, or critiqued due to its limited urban qualities and poor design. This omission has left its role in the development of the Welfare society largely unexplored. Therefore, this special issue revisits the green geographies of welfare planning, to reveal its importance as a matter of welfare and as a set of geographies that goes beyond the contemporary norm of the compact city. The revisits take two forms: historical studies to elucidate the original ideas and geographies of the planning, and revisits to sites currently challenged by new urban or planning ideals. This introduction presents the papers, reflects on previous research, and concludes with a few comments on the need for further studies on green planning and the landscape legacy of the welfare era.

    • Although finds of nails and fittings are common from urban, early modern archaeological sites, they are rarely used in the interpretations of the excavated buildings. These finds are often poorly documented and they seldom get preserved once the excavation report is completed. This means that the finds in many cases cannot be used in future research projects. In this article, we discuss the potential of these types of artefacts in research on early modern buildings and house construction. We furthermore discuss what would be required in the handling of the material in order for it to be used as a general resource.

  • Ingår i: International Journal of Urban and Regional Research. - : Wiley. - 0309-1317 .- 1468-2427. ; 43, s. 786-793
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Transit-oriented development (TOD) plays a significant role within contemporary planning policies for 'smart growth' and sustainable development, particularly in Europe and North America. As a well-rehearsed practice, this planning model is due for critical assessment and improvement in terms of its ability to incorporate dynamic and heterogeneous socio-spatial processes as matters of concern. Analyses of the conditions for 'making TOD work' in the scholarly and professional literatures tend to focus on the 'node' and 'place' qualities. While elaborations on node analysis (primarily based on accessibility measurements) abound within empirical research, discussions of place-specific assets are limited in scope and often spatially bounded by the circle defined by a 10-minute walk. This essay examines the use of this generic 'circle' model, and how it normatively frames how place is understood in TOD studies. We argue that the circle enhances a Euclidean understanding of the site, which favours a static and homogeneous spatial analysis of accessibility and density rather than (other) place qualities relating to dynamic socio-spatial processes. Finally, we argue that relational geography can facilitate an analysis of place qualities beyond the circle-one in which both the continuities and shifting settings of the wider context are meaningfully taken into consideration.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Health and Place. - : Elsevier BV. - 1353-8292 .- 1873-2054. ; 46, s. 351-357
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recreational running encompasses more than one type of exercise. Different running practices offer different, even opposing, conceptualisations of the role of the environment. As illustrated in this paper, historical studies can uncover and explain these variations. By studying the clash between two practices in Sweden in the 1970s - the newly translated idea of North American jogging and an already established tradition of fitness running - this paper qualifies the difference between them and illustrates how they assembled competing geographies. The paper argues that current planning would benefit from acknowledging this multiplicity because different forms of running offer complementary strategies for inclusivity.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Landscape Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0142-6397 .- 1469-9710. ; 43, s. 575-586
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study demonstrates a need for landscape studies of urbanisation in which the slow process of ruination and reuse is considered. The paper argues that a focus on maintenance and repair facilitate symmetrical studies in which the dismantling of former uses and the establishment of new activities and regulations are examined as an incremental process. This is illustrated here using the case study of a contested development project at the fringe of town Skurup, Sweden. The study traces partial dependencies of past planning, arguing that current farms have been successively separated from their previous networks of farming and, in the process, have become entangled in a complex interdependency of urban growth strategies dating back to the 1970s. The case provides a richer understanding of the contested landscape; it demonstrates the insufficiency of new growth boundaries, but also the potential to re-assemble the place, whether for farming or sustainable urban development.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Geografiska Annaler: Series B, Human Geography. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0435-3684 .- 1468-0467. ; 104, s. 269-284
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Contemporary planning for urban densification permits the exploitation of the spacious green areas developed for recreation during the welfare planning of the 1960s-70s. Historical studies of welfare planning are needed to better understand the potential values under threat. Answering Colin McFarlane's call for relational studies of density, this paper offers a complementary examination of the relational geography of green space provision in the 1970s, to reveal what the development of the compact city both silences and (literally) replaces. This relational approach departs from the flat ontology of Actor-network theory. The study captures how ideals of recreation, nature, welfare, planning and the rhythms of life assembled into a geography for recreation in the early 1970s, and how this topology crumbles a decade later. While the green spaces of the 1970s linger on today, their reinterpretation as green structure in the 1980s and 1990s partly veils their former role and potential. The paper interprets the legacy of welfare planning, and provides a base for further examination of the geography of green space provision.

This special issue offers interdisciplinary explorations of how one might approach studies of cities and metropolitan regions in new ways, using recreational mobilities as both lens and focal point. In so doing, the contributions aim to advance recreational mobilities as a critical theme for scholarship and practice. We specifically hope to demonstrate how such an approach is fruitful for grappling with the legacies of rationalism and modernism in spatial planning, with a focus on the contemporary ideal of the 'compact city' as both phenomenon and normative impulse that has come to dominate discourses of urban design and urban planning in recent decades.(1)

  • Ingår i: Environment and Planning A. - : SAGE Publications. - 0308-518X. ; 45, s. 312-328
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper traces the origins, marketing, and proliferation of a model facility for fitness running in Sweden (1958-71) in order to reveal the history of a mundane infrastructure of the modern Swedish town. In the process, it explores the possibility of following portable landscapes in order to provide richer stories on urbanisation. The paper first introduces an internationally renowned team in exercise physiology, together with how this team marketed fitness exercise in Sweden in the 1950s and 1960s. The study then follows the establishment of a heterogeneous network for the circulation of a portable landscape for jogging and outdoor exercise, with particular focus on the role of physicians and the Swedish Ski and Outdoor Association. The model was developed with the pulse at its centre as a reductive measurement of health. With the cycle ergometer and standardised fitness tests, the individual pulse was made manifest, combined with the marketing of the model facility for exercise which expressed a particular landscape ideal, with standardised centres for outdoor exercise established all over the country. With these new facilities, a bodily pulse, a societal rhythm, and a moral landscape of the modern welfare society proliferated.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Land Use Policy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0264-8377 .- 1873-5754. ; 56, s. 169-178
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Transit-oriented development (TOD) has been proposed as a model for sustainable urban and regional development beyond the troubled heritage of modernistic planning. Key to TOD is mixed use and reduced dependence on private cars. However, functionalistic land-use divides persist in the principles of TOD, such as the division between leisure and work and between permanent residences and second homes. These divides relate to, and are emphasised by, a strong focus on urban qualities within the TOD discourse, while discussions on landscape amenities are set aside. Following recent research on compensation theory and amenity migration, this study argues that densification of TODs could increase residents' dependency on second homes in the countryside. The study provides insights gained from semi structured interviews with senior residents in newly-built apartments and houses in a TOD location in Sweden. The interviews revealed how the importance of multiple dwellings is enhanced by the densification project and how car dependency is built into the model. The term 'part-time amenity migrant' has been coined to describe this phenomenon and increase awareness of landscape amenities in TOD locations. (C) 2016 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier Ltd.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Geoforum. - : Elsevier BV. - 0016-7185. ; 58, s. 166-173
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to facilitate sustainable development, a shift from mobility-based to accessibility-based planning has been suggested. However, if we rely on the modern conceptualisation of accessibility, such a shift would have limited results. As an alternative, this paper proposes a relational reading of accessibility, which questions the divide between mobility and place upon which the modern definition is based. It argues that the accessibility of a place is characterised by a specific coordination of presences and absences that depends as much on boundaries and exclusions as on mobility. If accessibility changes, so does the place. This interpretation makes accessibility a matter of priorities and provides a critical perspective on arguments for time-space compressions and progress. This is illustrated here using the example of a regional strategy for transit-oriented development in Sweden (Region Scania). For that case, the discourse on accessibility revealed simplified arguments for densification, progress and metropolitan ideals, contradicting the initial inclusive intentions of the strategy. Thus, there is a need to put accessibility in place so that a shift to accessibility-based planning facilitates a move towards social and environmental sustainability. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. • The paper studies the need to acknowledge planning history in order to grasp the character of contemporary landscapes. The aim of the study was to critically examine how the shadows of past planning frame the current discourse on peri-urban landscapes and, inspired by actor-network-theory, to explore the potential for new stories through a symmetrical analysis of historical planning documents. This is illustrated here using a case study of a municipality in Sweden. The paper argues that a combination of critical and creative reading could enrich the planning debate and open up new strategies for investigations and policies concerning hybrid landscapes.

  • Ingår i: Geografiska Annaler: Series B, Human Geography. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0435-3684 .- 1468-0467. ; 92, s. 219-235
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The history of vernacular landscapes at the urban fringe is poorly studied, limiting our understanding of the contemporary character of the fringe and our knowledge of the urbanization process. This article argues the necessity of a combined analysis of the legacies of planning and the footprints of former landscape ideals in order to understand the conditions for spatial planning at the urban fringe. After first introducing the methodological use of landscape/planning history, the article focuses on the Swedish discourse on landscape change and landscape planning concerning the urban fringe in the 1930s. Particular focus is placed on the discourse on agricultural landscapes at the urban fringe. The third section of the article presents an examination of the footprints of the 'landscape convention' (i.e. an agreement on the meaning of landscape in relation to law and justice) resulting from the landscape discourse of the 1930s. The article argues that the legacy of the 1930s explains some of the difficulties arising when planners of today aim to utilize the farm landscape as a resource for recreation at the urban fringe. The shadow of the landscape discourse of the 1930s also creates difficulties in dealing with peri-urban landscapes in Swedish planning and Swedish law. With the ongoing discourse on how to implement the European Landscape Convention, such knowledge is particularly useful.

  • The nature of running: On embedded landscape ideals in leisure planning
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Urban Forestry & Urban Greening. - : Elsevier BV. - 1618-8667 .- 1610-8167. ; 17, s. 202-210
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the importance of urban and peri-urban forests for development and planning for fitness running in Sweden in the 1960s-early 1980s. By doing so, it questions the conception of running as being independent of specific places and as an activity which does not interact with the landscape. The paper first describes the early development of fitness running in Sweden, which was facilitated by the establishment of illuminated tracks, locker rooms, parking spaces, etc., in forests and parks, investments which still affect where and how running is performed. The location of these facilities can be taken to reveal the importance of certain landscape ideals within planning, in particular the idea of the forest as the natural place to run. The case study of leisure planning in the city of Malmo (1960s-1980s) is then used to illustrate the materialization of the national forest ideal and the establishment of infrastructure for running. The paper concludes with a discussion on the forest ideal and argues the need to challenge an embedded division between nature and culture in future planning for recreational running.
