    • Abstract In analogy with histo-blood group A antigen, Forssman (Fs) antigen terminates with α3-N-acetylgalactosamine and can be utilized by pathogens as a host receptor in many mammals. However, primates including humans lack Fs synthase activity and have naturally-occurring Fs antibodies in plasma. We investigated individuals with the enigmatic ABO subgroup Apae and found them to be homozygous for common O alleles. Their erythrocytes had no A antigens but instead expressed Fs glycolipids. The unexpected Fs antigen was confirmed in structural, serological and flowcytometric studies. The Fs synthase gene, GBGT1, in Apae individuals encoded an arginine to glutamine change at residue 296. Gln296 is present in lower mammals whereas Arg296 was found in six other primates, >250 blood donors and Apae family relatives without the Apae phenotype. Transfection experiments and molecular modelling showed that 296Gln reactivates the human Fs synthase. Uropathogenic E.coli containing prsG-adhesin-encoding plasmids agglutinated Apae but not group O cells, suggesting biological implications. Predictive tests for intravascular hemolysis with crossmatch-incompatible sera indicated complement-mediated destruction of Fspositive erythrocytes. Taken together, we provide the first conclusive description of Fs expression in normal human hematopoietic tissue and the basis of a new histo-blood group system in man, FORS.

  • Reconfigurable wave band structure of an artificial square ice

    • Artificial square ices are structures composed of magnetic nanoelements arranged on the sites of a two-dimensional square lattice, such that there are four interacting magnetic elements at each vertex, leading to geometrical frustration. Using a semianalytical approach, we show that square ices exhibit a rich spin-wave band structure that is tunable both by external magnetic fields and the magnetization configuration of individual elements. Internal degrees of freedom can give rise to equilibrium states with bent magnetization at the element edges leading to characteristic excitations; in the presence of magnetostatic interactions these form separate bands analogous to impurity bands in semiconductors. Full-scale micromagnetic simulations corroborate our semianalytical approach. Our results show that artificial square ices can be viewed as reconfigurable and tunable magnonic crystals that can be used as metamaterials for spin-wave-based applications at the nanoscale.

    • Magnetism is a very fascinating and dynamic field. Especially in the last 30 years, there have been many major advances in a range of areas from novel fundamental phenomena to new products. Applications such as hard disc drives and magnetic sensors are part of our daily life and new applications, such as in non-volatile computer random access memory, are expected to surface shortly. Thus it is an opportune time for describing the current status and current and future challenges in the form of a roadmap article. The 2014 Magnetism Roadmap provides a view on several selected, presently very active innovative developments. It consists of twelve sections, each written by an expert in the field and addressing a specific subject, with a strong emphasis on future potential. This Roadmap cannot cover the entire field. Several highly relevant areas have been selected without attempting to provide a full review - a future update will aim to address further. The scope covers mostly nanomagnetic phenomena and applications, where surfaces and interfaces provide additional functionality. New developments in fundamental topics such as interacting nanoelements, novel magnon-based spintronics concepts, spin-orbit torques and spin-caloric phenomena are addressed. New materials such as organic magnetic materials and permanent magnets are covered. New applications are presented such as nanomagnetic logic, non-local and domain-wall based devices, heat-assisted magnetic recording, magnetic random access memory and applications in biotechnology. This Roadmap acts to serve as a guideline for future emerging research directions in modern magnetism.

    • The heterotrophic, epiphytic symbiotic bacterial strain WH2K(T) was previously isolated from a two-member culture in which it was attached to the heterocysts of a strain of Anabaena (SSM-00). Analysis of its 16S rRNA genes demonstrated that the symbiont was most closely related to the type strain of Hoeflea marina (96.9% similarity), which belongs to the family Phyllobacteriaceae within the order Rhizobiales of the class Alphaproteobacteria. A polyphasic taxonomic study was performed on strain WH2K(T) that consisted of irregular rods (2-5μm long, 0.2μm wide) that appeared to be narrower at one polar end. Optimal growth was obtained in complex media with 15 g l(-1) sea salts, at 18-34 °C (30 °C optimum) and at pH values in the range of 6.0-8.0 (6.5 optimum). Unknown growth requirements were provided by small amounts of yeast extract but not standard vitamin and trace metal solutions. Of the substrates tested, WH2K(T) was only able to utilize acetate, pyruvate, malate, and fumarate. Growth was only observed under aerobic and microaerobic conditions and nitrate was not reduced. No photosynthetic pigments were detected under any of the growth conditions tested. The predominant fatty acids were present in a summed feature that comprises C (18:1) ω7c, / 9t /12t or any combination of these (64.0%) and an unidentified fatty acid of estimated chain length (ECL of C(17.6) (13.5%), The polar lipid profile consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, phosphoglycolipid, unknown lipids and an unidentified aminolipid. The only respiratory ubiquinone detected was Q-10. The DNA %G+C content of the strain is 58.1%. The organism can form a site-specific attached symbiotic relationship with a species of Anabaena. Based on phylogenetic and phenotypic evidence it is proposed that strain WH2K(T) be classified as a fourth species of the genus Hoeflea, for which the name Hoeflea anabaenae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Hoeflea anabaenae sp. nov. is WH2K(T) (=CCUG 56626(T) =NRRL B-59520(T)).
