  • Environmental radiation baseline around the Belarusian nuclear power plant – assessments in Belarus and Lithuania
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Medical Physics in the Baltic States : Proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Medical Physics - Proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Medical Physics. - 1822-5721. ; , s. 121-125
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Prior to the operation of the first Belarussian nuclear power plant (BelNPP), the baseline of the radiation environment was determined within a radius of about 30 km from BelNPP. This independent assessment was carried out during two expeditions in 2019. In 2022, a similar survey was carried out (during the initialoperation of BelNPP) on the Lithuanian side of the boarder. Here we present the overall project and some general results of the baseline assessments.

  • ZERO POINT ASSESSMENT OF THE RADIATION ENVIRONMENT – EXAMPLES OF A PROGRAM APPLIED IN SWEDEN (ESS) AND IN BELARUS (BELNPP)
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: MEDICAL PHYSICS IN THE BALTIC STATES : Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Medical Physics - Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Medical Physics. ; , s. 85-88
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Before commissioning of a nuclear facility it is important to determine the baseline of the radiation environment. Such baseline or Zero Point assessments can only, and uniquely, be made before start of operation of the facility and will serve several purposes when the facility is in operation. Here we report on the planning and implementation of such a Zero Point program for achieving high reproducibility and effectiveness of the assessments around two nuclear installations.

  • PREOPERATIONAL ASSESSMENT OF 14C IN THE VINICINITY OF THE BELARUSIAN NUCLEAR POWER PLANT
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Medical Physics in the Baltic States : Proceedings of the 15th International Conference - Proceedings of the 15th International Conference. - 1822-5721. ; , s. 133-137
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As part of an independent assessment of the preoperational radiation environment around the Ostrovets nuclear power plant in Belarus, grass and foodstuffs were collected in 2019 for 14C analysis. The preoperational 14C specific activities in the Ostrovets region were shown to be similar to that of European data from other uncontaminated sites.

  • Ambient dose equivalent rates of gamma radiation from natural radionuclides and 137Cs at grasslands and forests in the area of the Belarusian NPP in the pre-commissioning period (2019)
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Radiation Protection Dosimetry. - 0144-8420. ; 200:5, s. 496-503
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In situ gamma-spectrometric measurements were performed at grasslands (45 plots) and forests (6 plots) in the vicinity of the Belarusian nuclear power plant in September–October 2019. The aim of the study was to evaluate the baseline level of ambient dose equivalent rates of gamma radiation from natural radionuclides and 137Cs in the period preceding the commissioning of the NPP. The study revealed more than a 2-fold variability in values of the total ambient dose equivalent rate: from 29 to 72 nSv/h. This spread can be explained by variability in the content of natural radionuclides in the environment and, accordingly, ambient dose equivalent rate. At forest sites, compared to grassland sites, the values of ambient dose equivalent rates of gamma radiation from natural radionuclides were statistically significantly lower. The contribution of gamma radiation from 137Cs to the total ambient dose equivalent rate was insignificant and averaged 3% for grasslands and 6% for forests.

  • Calibration and testing of a portable NaI(Tl) gamma-ray spectrometer-dosimeter for evaluation of terrestrial radionuclides and 137Cs contributions to ambient dose equivalent rate outdoors
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Radiatsionnaya Gygiena. - 1998-426X. ; 10:1, s. 18-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A commercially available NaI(Tl) based spectrometer-dosimeter has been used to separate contributions of the terrestrial radionuclides (238U series, 232Th series and 40K) and 137Cs to the total ambient dose equivalent rate (ADER), Ḣ*(10) , outdoors. The device had been initially calibrated by the manufacturer to measure: 1) the total ADER; 2) activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, 40K and ‘effective’ activity concentration of the terrestrial radionuclides, ACeff, in soil, agricultural raw materials, forestry products and construction materials; and 3) ground contamination density by 137Cs. In order to derive a conversioncoefficient from ACeff to the ADER stipulated by the terrestrial radionuclides (ADERTRN), two series of additional calibration measurements were performed. The calibration measurements were conducted at 27 outdoor locations in the center of St.-Petersburg and in the Leningradskaya region (background areas). The conversion coefficient from ACeff to ADERTRN of 0.51 (nSv h–1)/(Bq kg–1) has been obtained using a regression analysis of experimental data. The intrinsic noise of the spectrometer and its response to cosmic radiation at sea level has been estimated to 7 nSv h–1. The calibration factors must be used withcaution and only for detectors similar to the one employed in this study (assembly based on a NaI(Tl) single crystal, 63 mm in diameter and 63 mm in length). The spectrometer-dosimeter and experimentally derived calibration coefficients have been tested in field at seven sites in the south-western districts of the Bryansk region that had been heavily contaminated by Chernobyl fallout. The contribution of 137Cs to the total ADER varies between 40% and 95%. The preliminary results of the measurements confirmthe potential of in situ gamma-ray spectrometry for assaying natural and artificial components of the ambient dose equivalent rate outdoors.
