4) Summerande analys.

  • Hyperparathyroidism of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 : candidate gene and parathyroid calcium sensing protein expression
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Surgery. - 0039-6060 .- 1532-7361. ; 118:6, s. 924-931
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND:Hyperparathyroidism affects most patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN 1). This study investigates expression of the candidate MEN1 gene phospholipase C beta 3 (PLC beta 3) and expression and function of a putative calcium sensing protein (CAS) in hyperparathyroidism of MEN 1.METHODS:In 31 parathyroid glands from 17 patients with MEN 1, CAS distribution was studied immunohistochemically and parallel sections were explored for PLC beta 3 mRNA expression by in situ hybridization. Enzymatically dispersed parathyroid cells were analyzed for cytoplasmic calcium concentrations [Ca2+]i and parathyroid hormone (PTH) release.RESULTS:All glands exhibited a heterogeneously reduced CAS immunoreactivity, especially meager in nodularly assembled parathyroid cells. Calcium regulated [Ca2+]i and PTH release tended to be more deranged in the glands possessing the lowest immunostaining. Parathyroid PLC beta 3 invariably was homogeneously expressed, and this included even MEN 1 patients with reduced PLC beta 3 expression in endocrine pancreatic tumors.CONCLUSIONS:The findings support variable calcium insensitivity of [Ca2+]i and PTH release in hyperparathyroidism of MEN 1, apparently coupled to heterogeneously reduced CAS expression. For clarification of the role of PLC beta 3 in MEN 1 parathyroid tumorigenesis further study of this protein is required.

  • Sex-related differences in the associations between hyperleptinemia, insulin resistance and dysfibrinolysis
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Blood Coagulation and Fibrinolysis. - : Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. - 1473-5733 .- 0957-5235. ; 19:7, s. 625-632
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The adipocyte-derived hormone leptin is associated with insulin resistance and reduced fibrinolytic status - or dysfibrinolysis - in humans. As leptin associates differentially to the development of cardiovascular disease and diabetes in men and women, we hypothesized that leptin and insulin sensitivity are related to dysfibrinolysis in a sex-dependent manner. Thirty-two men and 40 women were recruited from the Monitoring of trends and determinants in Cardiovascular disease (MONICA) population sample, representing the highest and lowest quartiles of fasting insulin levels. Lipids, fibrinolytic status [plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1) activity, tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) mass and activity, and tPA-PAI complex], leptin, testosterone and sex-hormone-binding globulin were measured. Insulin sensitivity was estimated using the euglycaemic clamp technique. Body composition was determined by bioimpedance. Determinants for circulating levels of fibrinolytic factors were explored in a multivariate linear regression analysis. Levels of fibrinolytic variables and estimated insulin sensitivity did not differ between men and women. Leptin was independently associated with reduced fibrinolytic status high PAI-1 activity, low tPA activity, high tPA mass, and high tPA-PAI complex) in men (P<0.001-0.002). In women, fat mass and/or insulin sensitivity were related to these factors (P<0.001-0.03), and leptin only to reduced tPA activity (P = 0.002). Hyperleptinemia, dysfibrinolysis, insulin sensitivity and androgenicity associate differentially in men and women. • A direct comparison of the machining performance of a variax 5 axis parallel kinetic machining centre with conventional 3 and 5 axis machine tools
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: International journal of machine tools & manufacture. - 0890-6955 .- 1879-2170. ; 43:11, s. 1107-1116
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The current trend within the Tool and Die manufacturing sector is to machine components directly from hardened material using high speed 5-axis machining. This has been driven by the increasing requirements for cost competitiveness and lead-time reduction. Significant research effort has been applied to the optimisation of the process with factors such as tooling and machining strategies being considerably improved. However, the underlying structures of the machine tools used have remained unchanged and still consist of a serial kinematic chain. One of the standard justifications for the development of machines designed around parallel kinematic chains is that they should exhibit inherently greater stiffness, have higher axis accelerations and be capable of generating significantly higher cutting forces than conventional serial machines. This suggests that they should be ideally suited to the direct manufacture of tools and dies from hardened material. The comparison of different machine tool types is a complex and difficult process, particularly when their structures are fundamentally different. This paper describes an approach used to compare the performance of three very different types of machines. The technique uses two parameters; surface finish and geometric accuracy to assess the relative performance of different machine tools when cutting hardened material. The method is used to compare a serial kinematic 5-axis machining centre, a serial kinematic 3-axis machining centre and a parallel kinematic 6-axis machining centre. The results of the comparison are presented in this paper and show that all the machine tools performed to an equal standard for materials with a hardness of 54HRc but for very hard materials, 62HRc, the parallel kinematic machine out performed the serial machine tools.

  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Applied Ergonomics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0003-6870 .- 1872-9126. ; 41:4, s. 607-614
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to carry out a broad survey and analysis of relevant research articles about "piece rate" wages and their effects on health and safety, which were published internationally until the fall of 2008. The aim was to summarize and describe the state of the art of the research in this field and if possible draw conclusions from the accumulated research results. A total of 75 research articles were examined extensively and 31 of these were found relevant and had sufficient quality to serve the purpose of this study. The findings of these relevant articles are summarized and analyzed in the survey. Since the late 1980s, there has been a change of research focus regarding previous termpiece rates and their effects on health and safety.next term More recent research shows a clear interest for previous termhealth, next term musculoskeletal injuries, physical workload, pains and occupational injuries. The previous interest in risk behavior, security and accidents is still there, but no longer dominates the research scene.Although research is still sparse and fragmented, much of the accumulated knowledge about the previous termeffects of piece ratenext term work tells us that previous termpiece ratesnext term in many situations have a negative previous termeffect on health and safety.next term The fact that 27 of the 31 studied articles found negative previous termeffects of piece ratesnext term on different aspects of previous termhealth and safetynext term does not prove causality, but together they give very strong support for the hypothesis that in most situations previous termpiece ratesnext term have negative previous termeffects on health and safety.next termIn order to achieve better knowledge about the previous termeffects of piece ratesnext term in branches where previous termpiece ratesnext term are regarded problematic, further research is needed and such research has to be designed to meet the specific questions that are to be answered.

  • Occupational safety in the construction industry
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Work. - : IOS Press. - 1051-9815 .- 1875-9270. ; 64:1, s. 21-32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUNDThe paper is a research review focusing on occupational safety in the construction industry.OBJECTIVEThe purpose is to present research that highlights the areas of occupational safety and risks and to identify areas where research is lacking.METHODS326 articles from scientific journals, mainly covering the construction industry in Europe, Canada, USA, Australia and Japan have been studied. The findings are presented under 11 categories: accident statistics; individual factors; legislation and regulations; ethical considerations; risk management; leadership, management, organization; competence; safety design; cost-benefit calculations; programs and models; and technical solutions.RESULTSThe research is dominated by initiatives from researchers and government authorities, while the construction industry only appears as the object for the research. There is a scarcity of research on integrated systems encompassing subcontractors, as well as a lack of research with sociological perspectives on accidents. Furthermore, only a few studies have applied a gender perspective on safety in construction, i.e. there is a need of further research in this particular area.CONCLUSIONSA range of initiatives have been taken to increase safety in the construction industry and the initiatives are mainly reported to be successful. There are some cultural differences, but basically researchers present similar results regardless of country.

  • Impact of anxiety and depression on respiratory symptoms
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Respiratory Medicine. - : Elsevier BV. - 0954-6111 .- 1532-3064. ; 108:11, s. 1594-1600
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Psychological factors such as anxiety and depression are prevalent in patients with asthma. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between respiratory symptoms and psychological status and to estimate the importance of psychological status in comparison with other factors that are known to be associated with respiratory symptoms. This study included 2270 subjects aged 20-44 (52% female) from Sweden, Iceland, and Norway. Each participant underwent a clinical interview including questions on respiratory symptoms. Spirometry and methacholine challenge were performed. Symptoms of depression and anxiety were measured using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Eighty-two percent of the subjects reported no anxiety or depression whatsoever, 11% reported anxiety, 2.5% depression and 4% reported both anxiety and depression. All respiratory symptoms, such as wheezing, breathlessness and nightly symptoms, were more common, at a statistically significant level, in participants who had depression and anxiety, even after adjusting for confounders (ORs 1.33-1.94). The HADS score was the most important determinant for nightly symptoms and attacks of breathlessness when at rest whereas bronchial responsiveness was the most important determinant for wheezing, and breathlessness when wheezing. The probability of respiratory symptoms related to HADS score increased with increasing HADS score for all respiratory symptoms. In conclusion, there is a strong association between respiratory symptoms and psychological status. There is therefore a need for interventional studies designed to improve depression and anxiety in patients with respiratory symptoms. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Robotics and Computer-Integrated Manufacturing. - 0736-5845 .- 1879-2537. ; 9:4-5, s. 391-393
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The application of laser processing technology is rapidly increasing in manufacturing. The laser manufacturing process has since its introduction been computer controlled. At first, the laser was usually a stand alone machine, but recently the demand for its integration with other manufacturing equipment has been stressed. In most respects a laser workstation uses the same interfaces as any other manufacturing equipment. This paper covers some of the integration problems to be solved that are of specific importance for laser workstations.

  • Gender-specific links between hepatic 11beta reduction of cortisone and adipokines
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Obesity. - : Wiley. - 1930-7381 .- 1930-739X. ; 15:4, s. 887-894
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: Reduction of cortisone to cortisol is mediated by 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11betaHSD1), a putative key enzyme in obesity-related complications. Experimental studies suggest that adipokines, notably leptin and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), are of importance for 11betaHSD1 activity. We hypothesized that the regulation of hepatic preceptor glucocorticoid metabolism is gender-specific and associated with circulating levels of leptin and TNF-alpha receptors and/or sex hormones. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: A total of 34 males and 38 women (14 premenopausal and 22 postmenopausal) underwent physical examination and fasting blood sampling. Insulin sensitivity was tested by euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamps, and hepatic 11betaHSD1 enzyme activity was estimated by the conversion of orally-ingested cortisone to cortisol. RESULTS: Hepatic 11betaHSD1 activity was negatively associated with leptin and soluble TNF (sTNF) r1 and sTNFr2 in males. These correlations remained significant after adjustment for age and insulin sensitivity, and for sTNF-alpha receptors also after adjustment of BMI and waist circumference. In contrast, 11beta reduction of cortisone was positively associated to leptin in females after adjustment for BMI and waist circumference. DISCUSSION: Hepatic 11beta reduction shows different links to circulating adipocyte-derived hormones in males and females. This emphasizes the need for further studies on tissue-specific regulation of 11betaHSD1 in both genders.

  • Health-related quality of life as associated with asthma control, psychological status and insomnia
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Upsala Journal of Medical Sciences. - Uppsala : Upsala Medical Society. - 0300-9734 .- 2000-1967. ; 127
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Asthma is associated not only with lower health-related quality of life (HRQL) but also with psychological health and insomnia. The aim of this study was to investigate associations between HRQL, asthma symptoms, psychological status and insomnia in adults from three Nordic countries. Methods: This study comprised 2,270 subjects aged 29–55 from Sweden, Iceland and Norway. HRQL was measured with the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). The physical (PCS) and mental health (MCS) component scores were calculated with higher values, indicating better health status. Symptoms of depression and anxiety were measured using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Insomnia was assessed with the Basic Nordic Sleep Questionnaire. An asthma score consisting of a sum of the positive answers to five respiratory symptoms was used in the analysis. Spirometry and allergy tests were also performed. Results: High HADS and sleep disturbance scores were both related to a low PCS and MCS, respectively, after adjusting for confounders. High age and high body mass index (BMI) were associated with low scores on the PCS, whilst the opposite was found for the MCS. A higher asthma score was related to a low PCS. An interaction between the HADS and the asthma symptom score was observed for the PCS (P = 0.0002), where associations between psychological status and the PCS were more pronounced for individuals with more symptoms than for individuals without symptoms. Conclusions: In this study, we found that HRQL of life was independently related to the HADS, insomnia and asthma symptoms. Further prospective studies to identify the most efficient target for intervention in order to improve asthma control are needed.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we illustrate similarities and differences between Lean Production, Sociotechnical System Theory and Taylorism (Scientific Management) in the methodology characteristics map. 10 categories are extracted from basic literature and classified for each of the methodologies, for the construction of the chart. 4 of the categories relate to division of work, where we discuss integration and segregation of work. 2 categories relate to instructions and information, while the remaining 4 are related to the general focus of the methodology. With reflections to the illustrated results in the chart, we discuss sources to disagreement about similarities and differences between the methodologies.

  • A Longitudinal Study of Asthma : Risk Factors and Prognosis
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis was to identify risk factors for the onset of adult asthma. Other objectives were to study determinants of smoking habits and the association between sensitization and outcome of asthma. In 1990, a questionnaire was distributed to 12,732 individuals from three age groups (16, 30-39 and 60-69 years) in two counties of Sweden. In a second phase, 2538 subjects who had reported respiratory symptoms and 600 controls were invited to clinical investigations, 81% participated. At the follow-up in 2003 subjects of the remaining cohort (11,282) were re-invited. Analyses are based on the 67% (n=7563) who responded to both questionnaires 1990 and 2003. In 2003, 17.2% of the young adults, 11.4% of the middle-aged and 10.3% of the elderly reported having, or having had, asthma. A total of 791 subjects reported onset of asthma during the 13-year study period. Lifestyle factors such as smoking, obesity, hard physical training and a low consumption of fruit and fish were constant risk factors for onset of asthma after adjusting for socioeconomic group. A smoker’s risk of asthma onset was increased by 37%. The impact of risk factors differed between the age-groups. BMI had a significantly higher impact in the middle-aged and elderly. In subjects participating in the clinical investigations in 1990, sensitization to pets, were determinants of both persistent asthma and onset of asthma in 2003. The risk for persistent asthma was threefold. The risk for onset of asthma was more than doubled. Smoking at baseline in 1990 was the strongest determinant of being a smoker in 2003. Allergic sensitization and clinically verified asthma were not associated with smoking habits in 2003. No differences in changing smoking habits could be identified between smokers with or without asthma. In conclusion, modifiable lifestyle factors are important risk factors for adult onset asthma. The co-occurrence and interplay between asthma and cigarette smoking is still puzzling.
