  • Introducing the CTA concept
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Astroparticle physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0927-6505 .- 1873-2852. ; 43, s. 3-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a new observatory for very high-energy (VHE) gamma rays. CTA has ambitions science goals, for which it is necessary to achieve full-sky coverage, to improve the sensitivity by about an order of magnitude, to span about four decades of energy, from a few tens of GeV to above 100 TeV with enhanced angular and energy resolutions over existing VHE gamma-ray observatories. An international collaboration has formed with more than 1000 members from 27 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and North and South America. In 2010 the CTA Consortium completed a Design Study and started a three-year Preparatory Phase which leads to production readiness of CTA in 2014. In this paper we introduce the science goals and the concept of CTA, and provide an overview of the project. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Next-generation ARIA care pathways for rhinitis and asthma : a model for multimorbid chronic diseases
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Clinical and Translational Allergy. - : BMC. - 2045-7022. ; 9
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: In all societies, the burden and cost of allergic and chronic respiratory diseases are increasing rapidly. Most economies are struggling to deliver modern health care effectively. There is a need to support the transformation of the health care system into integrated care with organizational health literacy.Main body: As an example for chronic disease care, MASK (Mobile Airways Sentinel NetworK), a new project of the ARIA (Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma) initiative, and POLLAR (Impact of Air POLLution on Asthma and Rhinitis, EIT Health), in collaboration with professional and patient organizations in the field of allergy and airway diseases, are proposing real-life ICPs centred around the patient with rhinitis, and using mHealth to monitor environmental exposure. Three aspects of care pathways are being developed: (i) Patient participation, health literacy and self-care through technology-assisted "patient activation", (ii) Implementation of care pathways by pharmacists and (iii) Next-generation guidelines assessing the recommendations of GRADE guidelines in rhinitis and asthma using real-world evidence (RWE) obtained through mobile technology. The EU and global political agendas are of great importance in supporting the digital transformation of health and care, and MASK has been recognized by DG Sante as a Good Practice in the field of digitally-enabled, integrated, person-centred care. Conclusion: In 20 years, ARIA has considerably evolved from the first multimorbidity guideline in respiratory diseases to the digital transformation of health and care with a strong political involvement.

  • Structured Sparse Principal Components Analysis With the TV-Elastic Net Penalty
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging. - : IEEE. - 0278-0062 .- 1558-254X. ; 37:2, s. 396-407
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Principal component analysis (PCA) is an exploratory tool widely used in data analysis to uncover the dominant patterns of variability within a population. Despite its ability to represent a data set in a low-dimensional space, PCA’s interpretability remains limited. Indeed, the components produced by PCA are often noisy or exhibit no visually meaningful patterns. Furthermore, the fact that the components are usually non-sparse may also impede interpretation, unless arbitrary thresholding is applied. However, in neuroimaging, it is essential to uncover clinically interpretable phenotypic markers that would account for the main variability in the brain images of a population. Recently, some alternatives to the standard PCA approach, such as sparse PCA (SPCA), have been proposed, their aim being to limit the density of the components. Nonetheless, sparsity alone does not entirely solve the interpretability problem in neuroimaging, since it may yield scattered andunstable components. We hypothesized that the incorporation of prior information regarding the structure of the data may lead to improved relevance and interpretability of brain patterns. We therefore present a simple extension of the popular PCA framework that adds structured sparsity penalties on the loading vectors in order to identify the few stable regions in the brain images that capture most of the variability. Such structured sparsity can be obtained by combining, e.g., l1 and total variation (TV) penalties, where the TV regularization encodes information on the underlying structure of the data. This paper presents the structured SPCA (denoted SPCA-TV) optimization framework and its resolution. We demonstrate SPCA-TV’s effectiveness and versatility on three different data sets. It can be applied to any kind of structured data, such as, e.g., N-dimensional array images or meshes of cortical surfaces. The gains of SPCA-TV over unstructured approaches (such as SPCA and ElasticNet PCA) or structured approach (such as GraphNet PCA) are significant, since SPCA-TV reveals the variability within a data set in the form of intelligible brain patterns that are easier to interpret and more stable across different samples.

  • Designing NHC-Copper(I) Dipyridylamine Complexes for Blue Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces. - : AMER CHEMICAL SOC. - 1944-8244 .- 1944-8252. ; 8:23, s. 14678-14691
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study presents the influence of various substituents on the photophysical features of heteroleptic copper(I) complexes bearing both N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and dipyridylamine (dpa = dipyridylamine skeleton corresponding to ligand L1) ligands. The luminescent properties have been compared to our recently reported archetypal blue emitting [Cu(IPr)(dpa)][PF6] complex. The choice of the substituents on both ligands has been guided to explore the effect of the electron donor/acceptor and "push-pull" on the emission wavelengths and photoluminescence quantum yields. A selection of the best candidates in terms of their photophysical features were applied for developing the first blue light emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) based on copper(I) complexes. The device analysis suggests that the main concern is the moderate redox stability of the complexes under high applied driving currents, leading to devices with moderate stabilities pointing to a proof-of-concept for further development. Nevertheless, under low applied driving currents the blue emission is stable, showing performance levels competitive to those reported for blue LECs baged on iridium(III) complexes. Overall, this work provides valuable guidelines to tackle the design of enhanced NHC copper complexes for lighting applications in the near future.

  • Role of the Bridging Group in Bis-Pyridyl Ligands : Enhancing Both the Photo- and Electroluminescent Features of Cationic (IPr) Cu-I Complexes
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Chemistry - A European Journal. - : Wiley-VCH Verlagsgesellschaft. - 0947-6539 .- 1521-3765. ; 23:64, s. 16328-16337
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the benefits of changing the bridging group X of bis-pyridyl ligands, that is, Py-X-Py where X is NH, CH2, C(CH3)(2), or PPh, on the photo-and electroluminescent properties of a new family of luminescent cationic H-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) copper(I) complexes. A joint experimental and theoretical study demonstrates that the bridging group affects the molecular conformation from a planar-like structure (X is NH and CH2) to a boat-like structure (X is C(CH3)(2) and PPh), leading to i) four-fold enhancement of the photoluminescence quantum yield (phi(em)) without affecting the thermally activated delayed fluorescence mechanism, and ii) one order of magnitude reduction of the ionic conductivity (sigma) of thin films. This leads to an overall enhancement of the device efficacy and luminance owing to the increased phi(em) and the use of low applied driving currents.

  • Design Rule Hidden from The Eye in S/N-Bridged Ancillary Ligands for Copper(I) Complexes Applied to Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Advanced Functional Materials. - : WILEY-V C H VERLAG GMBH. - 1616-301X .- 1616-3028. ; 33:50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Enhancing low-energy emitting Cu(I)-ionic transition metal complexes (iTMCs) light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) is of utmost importance towards Cu(I)-iTMC-based white-emitting LECs. Here, the ancillary ligand design includes (i) extension of & pi;-systems and (ii) insertion of S-bridge between heteroaromatics rings. This led to two novel heteroleptic Cu(I)-iTMCs: 2-(pyridin-2-yl-l2-azanyl)quinoline (CuN2) and 2-(naphthalen-2-ylthio)quinoline (CuS2) as N<^>N and bis[(2-diphenylphosphino)phenyl] ether as P<^>P, exhibiting improved photoluminescence quantum yields (& phi;) and thermally activated delayed fluorescence processes compared to their reference Cu(I)-iTMCs: di(pyridin-2-yl)-l2-azane (CuN1) and di(pyridin-2-yl)sulfane (CuS1). Despite CuS2 stands out with the highest & phi; (38% vs 17 / 14 / 1% for CuN1 / CuN2 / CuS1), only CuN2-LECs show the expected enhanced performance (0.35 cd A(-1) at luminance of 117 cd m(-2)) compared to CuN1-LECs (0.02 cd A(-1) at6 cd m(-2)), while CuS2-LECs feature low performances (0.04 cd A(-1) at 10 cd m(-2)). This suggests that conventional chemical design rules are not effective towards enhancing device performance. Herein, nonconventional multivariate statistical analysis and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy studies allow to rationalize the mismatch between chemical design and device performance bringing to light a hidden design rule: polarizability of the ancillary ligand is key for an efficient Cu(I)-iTMC-LECs. All-in-all, this study provides fresh insights for the design of Cu-iTMCs fueling research on sustainable ion-based lighting sources.

  • Pi-Conjugated Molecular Nanowire Stacks Investigated by Frequency-Modulation Atomic Force Microscopy in the qPlus Configuration
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: APPLIED PHYSICS EXPRESS. - 1882-0778. ; 2:9, s. 091501-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Self-assembled pi-conjugated nanowire stacks were imaged using a tuning-fork probe mounted in the qPlus configuration in frequency modulation mode under ultrahigh vacuum. High resolution topographic and dissipation images demonstrate the applicability of such probes to soft conjugated materials, with sub-molecular resolution achieved perpendicular to the stacking axis. A new insight is gained from the damping contrast into the local mechanical properties of edge-on pi-conjugated stacks.

  • The upcoming European Soil Monitoring Law : An effective instrument for the protection of terrestrial ecosystems?
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Integrated Environmental Assessment and Management. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1551-3777 .- 1551-3793. ; 20:2, s. 316-321
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Soils are a precious resource consistently placed under several threats, and urgently, in need of protection within a regulatory framework at the European level. Soils are central to the provision of environmental services as well as human existence on earth. The need to protect soil has been identified by several recent European strategies and fortunately, a specific European Regulation for soil protection is on the way - the European Soil Monitoring Law (formerly: Soil Health Law). However, efforts need to ensure that the upcoming Soil Monitoring law closes gaps between existing regulations for chemicals and acknowledges current European strategies for environmental protection and sustainability. This brief communication started from a fruitful discussion among SETAC Global Soils Interest Group members on a recent public consultation on the newly proposed Soil Monitoring Law of the European Commission and highlights critical points focusing on the chemical pollution of soils. We emphasise urgent needs such as the essential definition of a 'healthy state' of soils, the implementation of a suitable set of indicators and quality standards for the description of physical, chemical and biological states of soils, the enforcement of the 'polluters pay's' principle and the establishment of a European wide monitoring program. Results from monitoring need to be fed back into regulatory frameworks, including the regulation of chemicals. Guidance documents for the risk assessment of chemicals are outdated and need to be updated. Finally, actions need to be taken to foster healthy soils, stop biodiversity decline and ensure the functioning of ecosystem services for future generations.

  • Tissue-specific postprandial clearance is the major determinant of PPARgamma-induced triglyceride lowering in the rat
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Physiology. Regulatory Integrative and Comparative Physiology. - Bethesda, Md. : American Physiological Society. - 0363-6119 .- 1522-1490. ; 296:1, s. R57-R66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPARgamma) agonism potently reduces circulating triglycerides (TG) in rodents and more modestly so in humans. This study aimed to quantify in vivo the relative contribution of hepatic VLDL-TG secretion and tissue-specific TG clearance to such action. Rats were fed an obesogenic diet, treated with the PPARgamma full agonist COOH (30 mg.kg(-1).day(-1)) for 3 wk, and studied in both the fasted and refed (fat-free) states. Hepatic VLDL-TG secretion rate was not affected by chronic COOH in the fasted state and was only modestly decreased (-30%) in refed rats. In contrast, postprandial VLDL-TG clearance was increased 2.6-fold by COOH, which concomitantly stimulated adipose tissue TG-derived lipid uptake and one of its major determinants, lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity, in a highly depot-specific manner. TG-derived lipid uptake and LPL were indeed strongly increased in subcutaneous inguinal white adipose tissue and in brown adipose tissue, independently of the nutritional state, whereas of the three visceral fat depots examined (epididymal, retroperitoneal, mesenteric) only the latter responded consistently to COOH. Robust correlations (0.5 < r < 0.9) were observed between TG-derived lipid uptake and LPL in adipose tissues. The agonist did not increase LPL in muscle, and its enhancing action on postprandial muscle lipid uptake appeared to be mediated by post-LPL processes involving increased expression of fatty acid binding/transport proteins (aP2, likely in infiltrated adipocytes, FAT/CD36, and FATP-1). The study establishes in a diet-induced obesity model the major contribution of lipid uptake by specific, metabolically safe adipose depots to the postprandial hypotriglyceridemic action of PPARgamma agonism, and suggests a key role for LPL therein.

  • Towards rainbow photo/electro-luminescence in copper(i) complexes with the versatile bridged bis-pyridyl ancillary ligand
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Dalton Transactions. - : ROYAL SOC CHEMISTRY. - 1477-9226 .- 1477-9234. ; 50:32, s. 11049-11060
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The synthesis and characterization of a family of copper(i) complexes bearing a bridged bis-pyridyl ancillary ligand is reported, highlighting how the bridge nature impacts the photo- and electro-luminescent behaviours within the family. In particular, the phosphonium bridge led to copper(i) complexes featuring good electrochemical stability and high ionic conductivity, as well as a stark blue-to-orange luminescence shift compared to the others. This resulted in high performance light-emitting electrochemical cells reaching stabilities of 10 mJ at ca. 40 cd m(-2) that are one order of magnitude higher than those of the other complexes. Overall, this work sheds light onto the crucial role of the bridge nature of the bis-pyridyl ancillary ligand on the photophysical features, film forming and, in turn, on the final device performances.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Inorganic Chemistry. - : American Chemical Society. - 0020-1669 .- 1520-510X. ; 53:17, s. 9181-9191
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We describe the synthesis of new cationic tricoordinated copper complexes bearing bidentate pyridine-type ligands and N-heterocyclic carbene as ancillary ligands. These cationic copper complexes were fully characterized by NMR, electrochemistry, X-ray analysis, and photophysical studies in different environments. Density functional theory calculations were also undertaken to rationalize the assignment of the electronic structure and the photophysical properties. These tricoordinated cationic copper complexes possess a stabilizing CH-pi interaction leading to high stability in both solid and liquid states. In addition, these copper complexes, bearing dipyridylamine ligands having a central nitrogen atom as potential anchoring point, exhibit very interesting luminescent properties that render them potential candidates for organic light-emitting diode applications.

  • A polarized fast radio burst at low Galactic latitude
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford Academic. - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 469:4, s. 4465-4482
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the discovery of a new fast radio burst (FRB), FRB 150215, with the Parkes radio telescope on 2015 February 15. The burst was detected in real time with a dispersion measure (DM) of 1105.6 +/- 0.8 pc cm(-3), a pulse duration of 2.8(-0.5)(+1.2) ms, and a measured peak flux density assuming that the burst was at beam centre of 0.7(-0.1)(+0.2) Jy. The FRB originated at a Galactic longitude and latitude of 24.66 degrees, 5.28 degrees and 25 degrees away from the Galactic Center. The burst was found to be 43 +/- 5 per cent linearly polarized with a rotation measure (RM) in the range -9 < RM < 12 rad m(-2) (95 per cent confidence level), consistent with zero. The burst was followed up with 11 telescopes to search for radio, optical, X-ray, gamma-ray and neutrino emission. Neither transient nor variable emission was found to be associated with the burst and no repeat pulses have been observed in 17.25 h of observing. The sightline to the burst is close to the Galactic plane and the observed physical properties of FRB 150215 demonstrate the existence of sight lines of anomalously low RM for a given electron column density. The Galactic RM foreground may approach a null value due to magnetic field reversals along the line of sight, a decreased total electron column density from the Milky Way, or some combination of these effects. A lower Galactic DM contribution might explain why this burst was detectable whereas previous searches at low latitude have had lower detection rates than those out of the plane.

  • Large-scale candidate gene scan reveals the role of chemoreceptor genes in host plant specialisation and speciation in the pea aphid
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Evolution. - : Wiley. - 1558-5646 .- 0014-3820. ; 66:9, s. 2723-2738
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding the drivers of speciation is critical to interpreting patterns of biodiversity. The identification of the genetic changes underlying adaptation and reproductive isolation is necessary to link barriers to gene flow to the causal origins of divergence. Here, we present a novel approach to the genetics of speciation, which should complement the commonly used approaches of quantitative trait locus mapping and genome-wide scans for selection. We present a large-scale candidate gene approach by means of sequence capture, applied to identifying the genetic changes underlying reproductive isolation in the pea aphid, a model system for the study of ecological speciation. Targeted resequencing enabled us to scale up the candidate gene approach, specifically testing for the role of chemosensory gene families in host plant specialization. Screening for the signature of divergence under selection at 172 candidate and noncandidate loci, we revealed a handful of loci that show high levels of differentiation among host races, which almost all correspond to odorant and gustatory receptor genes. This study offers the first indication that some chemoreceptor genes, often tightly linked together in the genome, could play a key role in local adaptation and reproductive isolation in the pea aphid and potentially other phytophagous insects. Our approach opens a new route toward the functional genomics of ecological speciation.

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : American Institute of Physics (AIP). - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 99:23, s. 233102-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Self-assembled pi-conjugated oligomer nanowires have been investigated by frequency modulation atomic force microscopy and amplitude modulation Kelvin probe force microscopy under ultra high vacuum. The distance dependence of the contact potential difference (CPD) has been analyzed by combining high resolution imaging with distance-spectroscopy measurements. It is shown that the apparition of a damping contrast characterizes the onset of short range electrostatic (SRE) forces, which are responsible for the occurrence of local CPD (LCPD) modulations correlated with the molecular lattice. By working at the onset of the damping contrast, the tip-surface separation can be adjusted to minimize the contribution of SRE forces to the measured CPD. VC 2011 American Institute of Physics.
