  • Planothidium juandenovense sp. nov. (Bacillariophyta) from Juan de Nova (Scattered Islands, Mozambique Channel) and other tropical environments: A new addition to the Planothidium delicatulum complex
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Fottea. - : Palacky University Olomouc. - 1802-5439 .- 1805-4927. ; 18:1, s. 106-119
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Planothidium juandenovense sp. nov. (Bacillariophyta) is described from the marine tropical environments of Juan de Nova I. (Mozambique Channel), Rodrigues I. (Mascarene Archipelago) and from Guam (Northern Mariana Is., Pacific). This small and relatively rare taxon has short multiseriate striae on the sternum valve (SV), hooked raphe valve (RV) terminal raphe endings and no SV cavum or hoof-shaped area. This taxon has similarities with Planothidium delicatulum (Kütz.) Round et Bukht. and Planothidium septentrionale (Østrup) Round et Bukht. ex Rumrich et al., but also differences: e.g. a relatively narrow and rhombic SV sternum, void of areolae, with vestigial radiate structures and an uninterrupted marginal SV elevated crest or ‘crista marginalis’. P. juandenovense sp. nov. is compared to some other Achnanthales with short SV striae. Cocconeis quarnerensis var. lanceolata Jurilj and Planothidium quarnerense f. rhombica (Giffen) comb. nov. may be close to our new taxon. © Czech Phycological Society (2018).

  • COCCONEIS POTTERCOVEI SP NOV AND COCCONEIS PINNATA VAR. MATSII VAR. NOV., TWO NEW MARINE DIATOM TAXA FROM KING GEORGE ISLAND, ANTARCTICA
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Diatom Research. - 0269-249X. ; 25:1, s. 1-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Details of two new small marine taxa of the genus Cocconeis Ehrenberg are described; C. pottercovei sp. nov. and C. pinnata var. matsii var. nov., which were observed as epipelic and epiphytic in Potter Cove, King George Island, Antarctica. Descriptions are based on both light and scanning electron microscope observations. C. pottercovei belongs to the group of Cocconeis taxa that bear very short and marginal striae on the rapheless valve while C. pinnata var. matsii belongs to the C. costata Gregory complex. They are mainly differentiated from the other similar taxa by stria number, stria arrangement and structure on both raphe and rapheless valves. A comparison with closely resembling taxa is given.

  • Two new marine species of Cocconeis (Bacillariophyceae) from the west coast of Sweden
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Taxonomy. - : Museum National D'Histoire Naturelle. - 2118-9773. ; 497, s. 1-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is part of a project of studying benthic diatom biodiversity on marine coastal regions of Sweden with focus on rare and less known species. Two new species of Cocconeis Ehrenb. are described from Vrango, a small island in the west coast of Sweden. Both species were found as epiphytic on the green alga Ulva intestinalis L. Cocconeis magnoareolata Al-Handal, Riaux-Gob., R.Jahn & A.K.Wulff sp. nov. is a small species not exceeding 9 mu m in length and characterized by having large subquadrangular areolae on the sternum valve. Cocconeis vrangoensis Al-Handal & Riaux-Gob. sp. nov. appears similar to some taxa of the 'Cocconeis scutellum complex', but differs by its stria density on both valves and variable features of the areola and valvocopula ultrastructure. Detailed descriptions based on light and electron microscopy examination, a comparison with closely related taxa, as well as a description of the habitat of both species are here presented.

  • New Amphicocconeis species off Mascarenes (Western Indian Ocean) and related taxa
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: DIATOM RESEARCH. - 0269-249X. ; 26:1-2, s. 175-188
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two new species were found on coral sediments of Mascarene archipelago: Amphicocconeis mascarenica sp. nov., relatively frequent in Réunion and rare in Rodrigues Islands, and A. rodriguensis sp. nov., relatively rare in Rodrigues and scarce in Réunion. Comparison was made with A. disculoides and A. debesii (Hustedt) De Stefano, and with species pertaining to Psammococconeis Garcia (P. brasiliensis and P. disculoides sensu Garcia). The Mascarenes taxa do not have simple raphe endings but terminal raphe fissures bent to the same side, which is a characteristic feature shared by Amphicocconeis taxa. Amphicocconeis rodriguensis has a raphe valve relatively similar to that of A. debesii (Hustedt) De Stefano, but with a denser striation; furthermore, the valvocopula of the sternum valve is narrow with simple to chiselled fimbriae. Amphicocconeis rodriguensis sternum valve is close to that of A. debesii (Hustedt) De Stefano. Amphicocconeis mascarenica shows a number of striae relatively low on both valves and both valvocopulae are generally extended and present rows of alternated small holes, which seems a unique feature for Amphicocconeis.

  • New species in the marine diatom genus Olifantiella (Bacillariophyta, Biraphidineae) from Rodrigues Island (Western Indian Ocean)
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Fottea. - 1802-5439. ; 12:2, s. 199-217
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Olifantiella RIAUX-GOBIN et COMPERE (Bacillariophyta, Biraphidineae), a monospecific diatom genus from coral reef environments in Reunion Island (Western Indian Ocean), was collected from Rodrigues Island (easterly island of the Mascarene archipelago) in 2007. Several taxa with the external characteristics of Olifantiella were observed in shallow lagoon sediments. The external opening connected to the internal process is easily identified in each taxon. The processes are on the same or opposite side of the frustule, depending on the taxon. Several taxa are present: I) Olifantiella cf. mascarenica RIAUX-GOBIN et COMPERE, 2) O. rodriguensis sp. nov., with an elongate shape and a double buciniportula, 3) O. gorandiana sp. nov., with a naviculoid shape and a complex buciniportula composed of two flattened tubes, that do not protrude, flanked by two small satellites, and 4) O. pilosella sp. nov., O. paucistriata sp. nov. and O. pseudobiremis sp. nov., which are only described from external views. The scarcity and minute size of the taxa necessitated the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to examine and distinguish them accurately. Some LM observations were made when possible. During previous tropical marine surveys, the genus Olifantiella may have been overlooked or misidentified, due to its small size, fragile frustules, and often naviculoid shape. We discuss the morphological diversity of the genus, e.g. the frustule and buciniportula shape and structure, and propose a formal emended description of the genus Olifantiella.

  • Species of the Cocconeis peltoides group with a marginal row of unusual processes (Mascarenes and Kerguelen Islands, Indian Ocean)
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: DIATOM RESEARCH. - 0269-249X. ; 26:3-4, s. 325-338
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two diatoms related to Cocconeis peltoides Hustedt (Bacillariophyceae), from coral reef environments (Mascarenes, Western Indian Ocean), are proposed as a new Cocconeis variety and a new C. species: Cocconeis peltoides var. archaeana Riaux-Gobin et Compère and Cocconeis sigillata Riaux-Gobin et Al-Handal. Cocconeis peltoides and the two new taxa possess an unusual marginal row of small processes on their sternum valve, internally opening as curb-like structures. Several other Cocconeis species, encountered during sampling campaigns in Kerguelen (Southern Ocean, Indian Ocean sector), also share such processes, including Cocconeis hauniensis Witkowski and Cocconeis germainii Riaux-Gobin, Witkowski et Romero. The shared characteristics of these taxa are examined and compared in detail.
