    • AimsArrhythmic mitral valve syndrome is linked to life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias. The incidence, morphology and methods for risk stratification are not well known. This prospective study aimed to describe the incidence and the morphology of ventricular arrhythmia and propose risk stratification in patients with arrhythmic mitral valve syndrome.MethodsArrhythmic mitral valve syndrome patients were monitored for ventricular tachyarrhythmias by implantable loop recorders (ILR) and secondary preventive implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD). Severe ventricular arrhythmias included ventricular fibrillation, appropriate or aborted ICD therapy, sustained ventricular tachycardia and non-sustained ventricular tachycardia with symptoms of hemodynamic instability.ResultsDuring 3.1 years of follow-up, severe ventricular arrhythmia was recorded in seven (12%) of 60 patients implanted with ILR [first event incidence rate 4% per person-year, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2–9] and in four (20%) of 20 patients with ICD (re-event incidence rate 8% per person-year, 95% CI 3–21). In the ILR group, severe ventricular arrhythmia was associated with frequent premature ventricular complexes, more non-sustained ventricular tachycardias, greater left ventricular diameter and greater posterolateral mitral annular disjunction distance (all P < 0.02).ConclusionsThe yearly incidence of ventricular arrhythmia was high in arrhythmic mitral valve syndrome patients without previous severe arrhythmias using continuous heart rhythm monitoring. The incidence was even higher in patients with secondary preventive ICD. Frequent premature ventricular complexes, non-sustained ventricular tachycardias, greater left ventricular diameter and greater posterolateral mitral annular disjunction distance were predictors of first severe arrhythmic event.

    • Previous studies suggest that Dickkopf-1 (DKK1), an inhibitor of Wnt signaling, plays a role in amyloid-induced toxicity and hence Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the effect of DKK1 expression on protein expression, and whether such proteins are altered in disease, is unknown.We aim to test whether DKK1 induced protein signature obtained in vitro were associated with markers of AD pathology as used in the amyloid/tau/neurodegeneration (ATN) framework as well as with clinical outcomes.We first overexpressed DKK1 in HEK293A cells and quantified 1,128 proteins in cell lysates using aptamer capture arrays (SomaScan) to obtain a protein signature induced by DKK1. We then used the same assay to measure the DKK1-signature proteins in human plasma in two large cohorts, EMIF (n = 785) and ANM (n = 677).We identified a 100-protein signature induced by DKK1 in vitro. Subsets of proteins, along with age and apolipoprotein E ɛ4 genotype distinguished amyloid pathology (A + T-N-, A+T+N-, A+T-N+, and A+T+N+) from no AD pathology (A-T-N-) with an area under the curve of 0.72, 0.81, 0.88, and 0.85, respectively. Furthermore, we found that some signature proteins (e.g., Complement C3 and albumin) were associated with cognitive score and AD diagnosis in both cohorts.Our results add further evidence for a role of DKK regulation of Wnt signaling in AD and suggest that DKK1 induced signature proteins obtained in vitro could reflect theATNframework as well as predict disease severity and progression in vivo.

  • Hazard assessment of sediments from a wetland system for treatment of landfill leachate using bioassays

    • Four bioassays were used in this study for the hazard assessment of sediments from sediment traps and several ponds in a treatment wetland for landfill leachate at Atleverket, Sweden. In the 6-day solid phase microbiotest with the sediment-dwelling crustacean Heterocypris incongruens both acute and chronic effects were observed with a gradual decrease and loss of toxicity with treatment in the wetland system. Some samples showed a low toxicity in porewater and only one sample was weakly toxic in the whole sediment test when assessed with Aliivibrio fischeri (Vibro fischeri). No genotoxicity was detected in the umu test. The toxicity response in the H4IIE- luc test evaluating the presence of dioxin-like compounds was considerably higher in the samples from the sediment traps. The hazard of the sediment therefore appears to be highest in the sediment traps and pond 1 with the methods employed. The result indicates that the wetland system has a design supporting the concentration and sequestration of toxic substances in the first part of the wetland. Based upon the results we suggest that hazard assessment of sediments from other treatment wetlands for landfill leachate should be conducted.

  • A tool for identifying green solvents for printed electronics

    • The emerging field of printed electronics uses large amounts of printing and coating solvents during fabrication, which commonly are deposited and evaporated within spaces available to workers. It is in this context unfortunate that many of the currently employed solvents are non-desirable from health, safety, or environmental perspectives. Here, we address this issue through the development of a tool for the straightforward identification of functional and "green" replacement solvents. In short, the tool organizes a large set of solvents according to their Hansen solubility parameters, ink properties, and sustainability descriptors, and through systematic iteration delivers suggestions for green alternative solvents with similar dissolution capacity as the current non-sustainable solvent. We exemplify the merit of the tool in a case study on a multi-solute ink for high-performance light-emitting electrochemical cells, where a non-desired solvent was successfully replaced by two benign alternatives.   • Controlling the Emission Zone by Additives for Improved Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells

    • The position of the emission zone (EZ) in the active material of a light-emitting electrochemical cell (LEC) has a profound influence on its performance because of microcavity effects and doping- and electrode-induced quenching. Previous attempts of EZ control have focused on the two principal constituents in the active material—the organic semiconductor (OSC) and the mobile ions—but this study demonstrates that it is possible to effectively control the EZ position through the inclusion of an appropriate additive into the active material. More specifically, it is shown that a mere modification of the end group on an added neutral compound, which also functions as an ion transporter, results in a shifted EZ from close to the anode to the center of the active material, which translates into a 60% improvement of the power efficiency. This particular finding is rationalized by a lowering of the effective electron mobility of the OSC through specific additive: OSC interactions, but the more important generic conclusion is that it is possible to control the EZ position, and thereby the LEC performance, by the straightforward inclusion of an easily tuned additive in the active material. © 2022 The Authors.

  • Xylan sorption kinetics at industrial conditions Part 1. Experimental results

    • The sorption kinetics for birch black liquor xylan onto unbleached softwood kraft fibers at industrial relevant process conditions was investigated. The impact of process conditions on total sorption and rate was studied. It was found that an unbleached fiber can increase its weight up to 40% by sorption of xylan if process conditions are favorable and sufficient xylan is present in the liquor. A decrease in pH, an increase in temperature and an increase in ionic strength enhances both the initial sorption rate and the maximum sorption, as expected from the literature. Moreover, an increased xylan charge from 5 to 10 g/l increased sorption by about 20-30% on average. At the highest temperature tested some deviations from the expected results were obtained, which indicates that more than one mechanism affect sorption. Analysis of the surface carbohydrate composition suggests that xylan is preferably sorbed on the fiber surfaces. This is especially obvious at higher sorption temperatures. SEM pictographs of the cellulose fibers indicate that xylan sorbs as single xylan chains at 87 and 127 degrees C. In contrast, at 167 degrees C globular structures are observed on the fibers, which probably is clue to precipitation of globular xylan aggregates from the liquor.

    • A model describing the sorption kinetics for black liquor birch xylan onto unbleached softwood kraft fibers at industrially relevant process conditions has been developed. The experimental results support the suggestion that xylan sorption is a physical process. Our model is based on the assumption that the mass transfer between bulk liquor and fiber surfaces is the rate determining step. The effects of changes in process conditions like temperature, NaOH concentration and ion strength are included in the model. The model fits the experimental data quite well for sorption temperatures between 87 and 127 degrees C. Other mechanisms affect the observed sorption at higher sorption temperatures. Consequently, more data is needed to produce a model for sorption at elevated temperatures. Deviations from the experimental data at temperatures up to 127 degrees C are proposed to be a result of competing mechanisms not accounted for in our model. These can, for instance, be the transportation of xylan from the surface into the cell wall, the degradation of xylan in solution, the removal of substituents from the xylan backbone, or a decrease in NaOH concentration in the solution.

    • AimsExercise increases risk of ventricular arrhythmia in subjects with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC). We aimed to investigate the impact of exercise on myocardial function in ARVC subjects. Methods and ResultsWe included 110 subjects (age 4217years), 65 ARVC patients and 45 mutation-positive family members. Athletes were defined as subjects with 4h vigorous exercise/week [1440 metabolic equivalents (METsxminutes/week)] during a minimum of 6 years. Athlete definition was fulfilled in 37/110 (34%) subjects. We assessed right ventricular (RV) and left ventricular (LV) myocardial function by echocardiography, and by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The RV function by RV fractional area change (FAC), RV global longitudinal strain (GLS) by echocardiography, and RV ejection fraction (EF) by MRI was reduced in athletes compared with non-athletes (FAC 34 +/- 9% vs. 40 +/- 11%, RVGLS -18.3 +/- 6.1% vs. -22.0 +/- 4.8%, RVEF 32 +/- 8% vs. 43 +/- 10%, all P<0.01). LV function by LVEF and LVGLS was reduced in athletes compared with non-athletes (LVEF by echocardiography 50 +/- 10% vs. 57 +/- 5%, LVEF by MRI 46 +/- 6% vs. 53 +/- 8%, and LVGLS -16.7 +/- 4.2% vs. -19.4 +/- 2.9%, all P<0.01). The METsxminutes/week correlated with reduced RV and LV function by echocardiography and MRI (all P<0.01). The LVEF by MRI was also reduced in subgroups of athlete index patients (46 +/- 7% vs. 54 +/- 10%, P=0.02) and in athlete family members (47 +/- 3% vs. 52 +/- 6%, P<0.05). ConclusionAthletes showed reduced biventricular function compared with non-athletes in ARVC patients and in mutation-positive family members. The amount and intensity of exercise activity was associated with impaired LV and RV function. Exercise may aggravate and accelerate myocardial dysfunction in ARVC.

  • Efficiency Roll-Off in Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells

    • Understanding “efficiency roll-off” (i.e., the drop in emission efficiency with increasing current) is critical if efficient and bright emissive technologies are to be rationally designed. Emerging light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) can be cost- and energy-efficiently fabricated by ambient-air printing by virtue of the in situ formation of a p-n junction doping structure. However, this in situ doping transformation renders a meaningful efficiency analysis challenging. Herein, a method for separation and quantification of major LEC loss factors, notably the outcoupling efficiency and exciton quenching, is presented. Specifically, the position of the emissive p-n junction in common singlet-exciton emitting LECs is measured to shift markedly with increasing current, and the influence of this shift on the outcoupling efficiency is quantified. It is further verified that the LEC-characteristic high electrochemical-doping concentration renders singlet-polaron quenching (SPQ) significant already at low drive current density, but also that SPQ increases super-linearly with increasing current, because of increasing polaron density in the p-n junction region. This results in that SPQ dominates singlet-singlet quenching for relevant current densities, and significantly contributes to the efficiency roll-off. This method for deciphering the LEC efficiency roll-off can contribute to a rational realization of all-printed LEC devices that are efficient at highluminance.
