  • Evolutionary trade-offs between male secondary sexual traits revealed by a phylogeny of the hyperdiverse tribe Eumaeini (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae)
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences. - : The Royal Society. - 1471-2954 .- 0962-8452. ; 288:1950
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Male butterflies in the hyperdiverse tribe Eumaeini possess an unusually complex and diverse repertoire of secondary sexual characteristics involved in pheromone production and dissemination. Maintaining multiple sexually selected traits is likely to be metabolically costly, potentially resulting in trade-offs in the evolution of male signals. However, a phylogenetic framework to test hypotheses regarding the evolution and maintenance of male sexual traits in Eumaeini has been lacking. Here, we infer a comprehensive, time-calibrated phylogeny from 379 loci for 187 species representing 91% of the 87 described genera. Eumaeini is a monophyletic group that originated in the late Oligocene and underwent rapid radiation in the Neotropics. We examined specimens of 818 of the 1096 described species (75%) and found that secondary sexual traits are present in males of 91% of the surveyed species. Scent pads and scent patches on the wings and brush organs associated with the genitalia were probably present in the common ancestor of Eumaeini and are widespread throughout the tribe. Brush organs and scent pads are negatively correlated across the phylogeny, exhibiting a trade-off in which lineages with brush organs are unlikely to regain scent pads and vice versa. In contrast, scent patches seem to facilitate the evolution of scent pads, although they are readily lost once scent pads have evolved. Our results illustrate the complex interplay between natural and sexual selection in the origin and maintenance of multiple male secondary sexual characteristics and highlight the potential role of sexual selection spurring diversification in this lineage.

  • Safety and immunogenicity of a glycoprotein D genital herpes vaccine in healthy girls 10-17 years of age : results from a randomised, controlled, double-blind trial
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Vaccine. - : Elsevier BV. - 0264-410X .- 1873-2518. ; 31:51, s. 6136-6143
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: The investigational AS04-adjuvanted herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) glycoprotein D (gD2) subunit prophylactic vaccine ('HSV vaccine'; GlaxoSmithKline Vaccines) has been shown to be well tolerated in adults, but limited data exist for pre-teen and adolescent girls, a likely target population. The primary objective of this study was to compare the occurrence of serious adverse events (SAEs) over 12 months between HSV vaccine recipients and saline recipients (placebo control group) in pre-teen and adolescent girls. The immunogenicity of the HSV vaccine was also assessed.METHODS: Healthy girls aged 10-17 years, stratified by age (10-15 years; 16-17 years), were randomised 2:1:1 to receive the HSV vaccine, a hepatitis A vaccine (Havrix™; HAV control) or placebo (saline) according to a 0-, 1-, 6-month schedule. Participants and study personnel not involved in the preparation or administration of vaccines were blinded to treatment. Safety and immunogenicity analyses were performed overall and by age (10-15 years; 16-17 years) and HSV serostatus.RESULTS: No statistically significant difference in the percentage of subjects with SAEs was observed between the HSV and saline group, or between the HSV and pooled control (HAV and saline) groups. The HSV vaccine was well tolerated, although a higher incidence of solicited local symptoms was observed in the HSV group than in the control group. Neither age nor HSV serostatus at the time of study entry had an impact on the safety profile of this vaccine. The HSV vaccine was immunogenic regardless of pre-vaccination HSV serostatus. Higher anti-gD geometric mean concentrations were observed in HSV-1 seropositive participants than in HSV-1 seronegative participants.CONCLUSION: The HSV vaccine had an acceptable safety profile, and was well tolerated and immunogenic when administered to girls aged 10-17 years regardless of age or HSV pre-vaccination serostatus.

  • Structural and magnetic properties of GaSb:MnSb granular layers
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Radiation Physics and Chemistry. - : Elsevier BV. - 0969-806X. ; 80:10, s. 1051-1057
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The results of structural and magnetic characterization of GaMnSb layers grown on GaSb(0 0 1) and GaAs(1 1 1) substrates are presented. The presence of hexagonal, highly oriented MnSb inclusions embedded in GaSb matrix has been demonstrated. The lattice parameters of these inclusions were the same as those for bulk MnSb for the layers grown on GaSb(1 0 0) substrate while for the layers grown on GaAs(1 1 1) the MnSb inclusions were strained. The influence of a presence of MnSb clusters on the lattice parameter of GaSb matrix has been demonstrated. It was confirmed that in all cases the MnSb clusters exhibit a ferromagnetic: behavior at room temperature. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    • SubRosa is a persuasive ambient display system designed to reduce sound levels in areas used for quiet study. We have constructed a high-fidelity prototype that visualises ambient noise levels, in this case as a rotting tomato. SubRosa is different from similar systems in that it uses immediate feedback and targets a dynamic user group with a high member turnover. An experience study we conducted in two different locations showed positive influence on ambient noise conditions. Based on the study results, we discuss insights into the design of persuasive ambient displays, the effectiveness of our approach, and types of ambient feedback that could be used in similar systems. By comparing the experience study results, we show how immediate feedback for ambient displays is suitable for environments with dynamic user groups. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.
