  • Six modes of co-production for sustainability

    • Co-production includes diverse aims, terminologies and practices. This study explores such diversity by mapping differences in how 32 initiatives from 6 continents co-produce diverse outcomes for the sustainable development of ecosystems at local to global scales. The promise of co-production to address complex sustainability challenges is compelling. Yet, co-production, the collaborative weaving of research and practice, encompasses diverse aims, terminologies and practices, with poor clarity over their implications. To explore this diversity, we systematically mapped differences in how 32 initiatives from 6 continents co-produce diverse outcomes for the sustainable development of ecosystems at local to global scales. We found variation in their purpose for utilizing co-production, understanding of power, approach to politics and pathways to impact. A cluster analysis identified six modes of co-production: (1) researching solutions; (2) empowering voices; (3) brokering power; (4) reframing power; (5) navigating differences and (6) reframing agency. No mode is ideal; each holds unique potential to achieve particular outcomes, but also poses unique challenges and risks. Our analysis provides a heuristic tool for researchers and societal actors to critically explore this diversity and effectively navigate trade-offs when co-producing sustainability.

    • Co-production, the collaborative weaving of research and practice by diverse societal actors, is argued to play an important role in sustainability transformations. Yet, there is still poor understanding of how to navigate the tensions that emerge in these processes. Through analyzing 32 initiatives worldwide that co-produced knowledge and action to foster sustainable social-ecological relations, we conceptualize 'co-productive agility' as an emergent feature vital for turning tensions into transformations. Co-productive agility refers to the willingness and ability of diverse actors to iteratively engage in reflexive dialogues to grow shared ideas and actions that would not have been possible from the outset. It relies on embedding knowledge production within processes of change to constantly recognize, reposition, and navigate tensions and opportunities. Co-productive agility opens up multiple pathways to transformation through: (1) elevating marginalized agendas in ways that maintain their integrity and broaden struggles for justice; (2) questioning dominant agendas by engaging with power in ways that challenge assumptions, (3) navigating conflicting agendas to actively transform interlinked paradigms, practices, and structures; (4) exploring diverse agendas to foster learning and mutual respect for a plurality of perspectives. We explore six process considerations that vary by these four pathways and provide a framework to enable agility in sustainability transformations. We argue that research and practice spend too much time closing down debate over different agendas for change - thereby avoiding, suppressing, or polarizing tensions, and call for more efforts to facilitate better interactions among different agendas.

    • Simulation results for light transport in long tapered CsI(Tl) crystals using look-up tables (LUTs) are presented. The LUTs were derived from the topography of a polished and a lapped surface of a CsI(Tl) crystal measured with atomic force microscopy. Simulations with different combinations of polished and lapped surfaces were performed, to extract the non-uniformity of light collection depending on the interaction point, and compared to experimental results. The simulations reproduce the general trend given by the measurements, and show that more homogeneous light collection is attained when all lateral sides of the crystal are lapped. For the lapped crystal the simulation model is most sensitive to the reflectivity of the enhanced specular reflector (ESR) foil surrounding the crystal, which is one of several properties influencing the light transport examined in this study. The sensitivity of the light-output non-uniformity to variations in the absorption length observed in a batch of CsI(Tl) crystals in a previous study is also discussed. Residual differences between the simulation and the measurements can potentially be attributed to the scattering of scintillation photons inside the materials used. Additional measurements to further advance the construction of the simulation model are suggested.

  • A Combined Nutrient and Lactulose Challenge Test Allows Symptom-Based Clustering of Patients With Irritable Bowel Syndrome

    • OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present pilot study was to evaluate the usefulness of a test meal containing lactulose in the non-invasive assessment of visceral sensitivity in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and to identify subsets of IBS patients based on gastrointestinal (GI) symptom generation. METHODS: We included 43 patients with IBS (Rome III) and 29 healthy controls. The fasted subjects were served three test meals consisting of a 400-ml liquid breakfast alone or containing lactulose (15 or 25g) in a double-blind crossover design. Seven GI symptoms, overall digestive comfort, and exhaled H2/CH4 were assessed at baseline and every 15min during 4h after meal intake. Anxiety and depression were assessed only at baseline. A mapping of the seven GI symptoms was done using a Principal Component Analysis (4h mean area under the curve, AUC). Independently, a hierarchical cluster analysis was performed on the same parameters to identify GI symptom-based IBS clusters. RESULTS: All three tests were well tolerated. The 25g lactulose challenge enabled discrimination of IBS from healthy controls according to the symptom response. This challenge also enabled clustering of IBS subjects in two subgroups based mainly on bloating, distension, and discomfort symptoms (2,457 (2,043–2,872), 2,450 (1,910–2,990), 2,602 (2,126–3,079) vs. 537 (383–691), 619 (458–780), 643 (432–854); 4h mean AUC; P<0.0001), overall digestive comfort (1807 (1318–2295) vs. 3350 (2942–3758); 4h mean AUC; P<0.0001), and anxiety at baseline (9.2 (7.0–11.5) vs. 5.5 (4.2–6.9); Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale anxiety mean scores; P=0.003). This clustering was independent of the Rome III subtype and the amount of exhaled H2/CH4. CONCLUSIONS: The lactulose challenge test seems to be a promising tool to assess visceral sensitivity in IBS, and to subgroup IBS patients based on their symptom pattern.

  • Microfluidic production of monodisperse biopolymer particles with reproducible morphology by kinetic control

    • Microdroplets of phase separating and gelling gelatin-maltodextrin mixtures were produced by a microfluidic technique. The microstructures observed inside the gelled particles were highly reproducible. This resulted from both the controlled production of monodisperse droplets in a microfluidic device and the tuning of gelation and phase separation kinetics. We showed that the internal particle microstructure can be tailored by varying the cooling rate (90 degrees C/min, 55 degrees C/min, 5 degrees C/min), the biopolymer composition (4% gelatin and 6%-7.3% maltodextrin) and the gelatin type (lime hide, pig skin). The particles were analyzed using confocal scanning laser microscopy and image analysis. Microstructures with smaller domain sizes were formed at the fastest cooling rate (90 degrees C/min), and microstructures with large domain sizes were obtained at the slowest cooling rate (5 degrees C/min). Furthermore, differences in particle morphology were observed at this slowest cooling rate. In particles containing pig skin gelatin, maltodextrin was located in the core, whereas gelatin was present at the water-oil interface. The opposite was observed for particles consisting of lime hide gelatin where the maltodextrin was found toward the oil phase. The results also showed that a higher concentration of maltodextrin formed larger bicontinuous microstructures compared to the ones obtained with lower concentrations.
