- This article presents a study of how a sample of 81 collocations contributes to the description of meaning in the multi-volume historical dictionary that describes the Swedish language since the year 1521, i. e. the Swedish Academy Dictionary (SAOB 1898–). The sample consists of two-word expressions of five different grammatical construction types, and I conclude that collocations of different types contribute to the definitions in different ways. Collocations are, for example, often given as integrated parts of the definitions in articles describing adjectives or verbs, whereas they typically appear as illustrative examples in articles describing adverbs or nouns.

- The study presented in this article attempts to investigate the semantic preferences of three Swedish adjectives when used as attributes to express ’a high degree’ of a noun head word: hård (Eng. hard or severe), kraftig (Eng. powerful) and stark (Eng. strong). In some semantic contexts the three adjectives seem practically interchangeable, while in other contexts only one of them sounds “correct”. For example, ‘a high degree’ of the word vind (Eng. wind or breeze) can be expressed by any of the adjectives hård, kraftig or stark, but ‘a high degree’ of the word känsla (Eng. feeling) is normally expressed only by the adjective stark. Through corpus searches and through organizing the head nouns into semantic fields I try to establish the semantic contexts in which the adjectives hård, kraftig and stark can be used to express ‘a high degree’ of a noun. The objective is to disclose semantic patterns that language users are more or less unaware of. The present investigation constitutes a pilot study of a larger research project on the use of intensifying Swedish adjectives.

- I detta arbete undersöks beskrivningen av kollokationer i Svenska Akademiens ordbok (SAOB) (1893-). Jag funderar bl.a. kring vilka principer man har på SAOB vad gäller urval. Hur mycket bör tas med i en allmänspråklig historisk ordbok? Jag tittar också på hur kollokationer presenteras. Är presentationssättet konsekvent? Får läsaren information om vilken typ av ordförbindelse det handlar om? Finns det fasta regler vad gäller lemmaplacering? Jag berör också det faktum att man genom artiklarna i SAOB också får information om hur kollokationer har förändrats över tid. Som undersökningsmaterial har jag bl.a. använt en exempelsamling bestående av 28 kollokationer sammanställd av Sven-Göran Malmgren. I sin artikel Collocations in Swedish Dictionaries and Dictionary Research (2008) har Malmgren undersökt hur de utvalda kollokationerna beskrivs i tre olika ordböcker, nämligen Svenskt språkbruk, Nationalencyklopedins ordbok (NEO) och Norstedts engelsk-svenska ordbok. Malmgrens undersökning gör det alltså möjligt för mig att se hur väl SAOB täcker in de 28 kollokationerna i jämförelse med en konstruktionsordbok, en allmänordbok och en tvåspråkig ordbok.

- The objective of this study is to analyze the description of collocations in the Swedish Academy Dictionary (SAOB 1898–). The 81 phrases that Svensén (2004:212) gives as examples of collocations of different grammatical construction types are investigated. The following grammatical construction types are represented in the material: verb + noun object, e.g. fatta beslut (come to a decision), noun subject + verb, e.g. dagen gryr (dawn breaks), adjective + noun, e.g. inbiten ungkarl (confirmed bachelor), verb + adverb, e.g. neka blankt (deny flatly) and adverb + adjective, e.g. starkt begränsad (strictly limited). The representativity of the 81 collocations is discussed as well as whether or not the phrases constitute strong collocations which require a description in the dictionary. In addition I investigate which construction types of collocations are most important, semantically and grammatically. The representativity of the articles in the SAOB is also discussed. When the collocation I am looking for is not found in the relevant article in the SAOB I try to establish whether the semantic content of that collocation is represented by other expressions. If, for example, the collocation hård kritk (harsh criticism) is not found in the article KRITIK (criticism), are there other adjectives in the article that express a ‘high degree’ of criticism? The investigation shows, among other things, that 65 of the 81 collocations are accounted for in the SAOB. It is, however, evident that different types of collocations are given different amounts of attention. Collocations of the construction type verb + object noun are accounted for to a large extent, while construction types where one of the constituents is an adverb are often overlooked. Possible reasons for this are also discussed in the study.
