  • Early Neolithic flint mining at Södra Sallerup, Scania, Sweden
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Archaeologia Polona. - Warsaw : Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology, Polish Academy of Science. - 0066-5924. ; 54, s. 167-180
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The area around the villages of Kvarnby and S.dra Sallerup in south-west Scania is the only known flint-mining site in Sweden. Radiocarbon dates show that the flint was mined mainly during the earliest phase of the Early Neolithic, between c. 4000 and 3600 BC, thus coinciding with the earliest evidence of the Funnel Beaker Culture in the region. The type of flint, the size of the flint nodules, production debris in the mining area and the concentration of point-butted axes to south-west Scania all suggest that the mining was related to the extraction of flint for the production of point-butted axes. However, considering the abundance of easily available flint elsewhere in the region, it seems clear that the mining was not motivated purely by economic reasons. We suggest that the very extraction of flint from pits and shafts in the chalk was socially and symbolically significant in itself.

  • Landscape, climate, sea-level variations and human living conditions in a coastal area of western Blekinge on the Baltic sea between 11600 cal BP and AD 1000 : E22- Sölvesborg-Stensnäs-project members 2014
  • 2014
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of the project has been to reveal the living conditionsfor humans in a coastal area of the Baltic sea during thirteen thousand years and to study the implications of variations in climate, sea-level and landscape changes. The archaeological ex- cavations, well integrated with paleoecological studies, along a twenty kilometer new road-built between Sölvesborg and Stensnäs has resulted in unique findings which shed new light on to the human history in southern Scandinavia and adjust- ment of the sea-level curve in western Blekinge. Time periods from early mesolithic, neolithic, bronze age until late iron age are well represented at the sites along the former bay and lake Vesan. Macrofossil analysis of the plant material at the archae- ological sites has revealed the food resources, burial gifts and given a glimpse of the local environment. Sediment cores from the center and near shore of former lake Vesan has given the opportunity to reconstruct the aquatic conditions and vegeta- tion in the surrounding landscape based on analysis of diatoms, pollen, macrofossils and carbon content. The vast number of radiocarbon dates of the archaeological material from various altitudes at the sites has enabled adjustment of the sea-level curve especially during Ancylus-, Littorina transgressions and aregression around 8.2 ka.

  • The Spread of Flint Axes and Daggers in Neolithic Scandinavia
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Památky Archeologické. - 0031-0506. ; 92:2, s. 193-221
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Flint has a limited distribution in the Scandinavian area, natural sources being largely confined to the southern regions. Here, the use of flint for making daggers and polished axes during the Neolithic is widespread and extensive. There is also evidence for mining of flint at Södra Sallerup in southern Sweden and on several sites in Denmark, but flint is available in till deposits as well. The goal of the article is to study the distribution of flint as a raw material in Neolithic contexts, concentrating on local and long-distance movement. We begin with a discussion of flint sources and their exploitation during the Neolithic. Thereafter we present three case studies illustrating how the use of flint varied over both time and space.

  • Ingår i: Prehistoric Flint Mines in Europe. - : Archaeopress. - 9781803272221 - 9781803272214 ; , s. 327-339
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The area in Södra Sallerup is, as far as we know, the only large-scale flint mining area in Sweden. Radiocarbon dates indicate that the flint was mined mainly during the Early Neolithic. It is clear, however, that the flint that was scattered throughout the area by the mining activity was used during later periods, even as late as the Viking and Medieval Periods. The large-scale mining during the Early Neolithic was probably related to the extraction of high-quality flint for the production of point-butted axes. The concentration of these axes to south-west Scania and eastern Zealand points in this direction. However, it would be wrong to assume that the mines were merely ‘axe factories’, motivated by economic reasons only. The very extraction of flint from pits and shafts in the chalk was most probably socially and symbolically significant in itself. The activity was probably an integral part of the Early Neolithic mentality involving extraction of resources from the land on a scale that was not envisioned until the introduction of farming in this part of Scandinavia.

  • The proper way of dwelling at the Early Neolithic gathering site of Almhov in Scania, Sweden
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Neolithic Diversities/Acta Archaeologica Lundensia, Series In 8°. - 0065-0994. - 9789189578609 ; 65, s. 173-187
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Early Neolithic (c. 4000–3500 BC) site of Almhov, located in southwestern Scania, Sweden, is interpreted as a gathering and feasting site, subsequently transformed into a burial site with ancestral monuments. The focus of the article is on the pit pairs and pit clusters at the site, and on the dierential distribution of artefacts and animal bones within them, thereby touching upon more general topics such as material culture patterning, structured deposition and the categorization of animals during the Early Neolithic.

  • Tilling Nature - Harvesting Culture. Exploring Images of the Human Being in the Transition to Agriculture.
  • 2000
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Archaeology is about human beings – in the present and in the past. When we concern ourselves with archaeology we have to imagine prehistoric human beings thinking, feeling and acting. This imagining is the very precondition for the creation of meaning from the fragments and traces of human lives that we choose as our data. What kind of images of human beings do we create through the writing and reading of archaeological texts? From where do these images come? How are they created, and what implications do they have for our understanding of the past – and of the present? This study is devoted to these and other related questions. The questions are focused on a specific archaeological problem: the origins of agriculture. It is hardly an exaggeration to say that this is the most mythically charged theme in Western archaeology. Agricultural origins concerns Western identity. During the last two or three centuries, countries in the Western world have been transformed from agricultural societies to modern industrialised societies. The nostalgia for disappearing life-styles and contemporary concerns with environmental issues are probably the most important reasons for the vast archaeological interest in agricultural origins during the twentieth century. This work investigates how the origins of agriculture has been defined, debated, deconstructed, restated, renamed and revived. The intention is to yield insights into the relation between images of the present, images of the past and images of the human being.

  • Current standards of neuropsychological assessment in epilepsy surgery centers across Europe.
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Epilepsia. - : Wiley. - 1528-1167 .- 0013-9580. ; 58:3, s. 343-355
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We explored the current practice with respect to the neuropsychological assessment of surgical epilepsy patients in European epilepsy centers, with the aim of harmonizing and establishing common standards. Twenty-six epilepsy centers and members of "E-PILEPSY" (a European pilot network of reference centers in refractory epilepsy and epilepsy surgery), were asked to report the status of neuropsychological assessment in adults and children via two different surveys. There was a consensus among these centers regarding the role of neuropsychology in the presurgical workup. Strong agreement was found on indications (localization, epileptic dysfunctions, adverse drugs effects, and postoperative monitoring) and the domains to be evaluated (memory, attention, executive functions, language, visuospatial skills, intelligence, depression, anxiety, and quality of life). Although 186 different tests are in use throughout these European centers, a core group of tests reflecting a moderate level of agreement could be discerned. Variability exists with regard to indications, protocols, and paradigms for the assessment of hemispheric language dominance. For the tests in use, little published evidence of clinical validity in epilepsy was provided. Participants in the survey reported a need for improvement concerning the validity of the tests, tools for the assessment of everyday functioning and accelerated forgetting, national norms, and test co-normalization. Based on the present survey, we documented a consensus regarding the indications and principles of neuropsychological testing. Despite the variety of tests in use, the survey indicated that there may be a core set of tests chosen based on experience, as well as on published evidence. By combining these findings with the results of an ongoing systematic literature review, we aim for a battery that can be recommended for the use across epilepsy surgical centers in Europe.
