  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two of Cassian’s works, the Institutiones and the Collationes, are preserved in both Latin and Greek, and almost all scholars have taken it for granted that he wrote exclusively in Latin. This paper examines two passages from Cassian’s writings, one from the Institutiones (which has a parallel in an Evagrian florilegium) and the other from the Collationes. Arguing against the prevailing view, the paper provides evidence in support of the hypothesis that Cassian originally wrote the Institutiones in Greek. The paper highlights different theological emphases in the Latin and Greek versions and argues that in the translation of Cassian’s works also style, rhetoric, and theology were adapted.

    • There is an increasing demand for imaging methods that can be used for automatic, accurate and quantitative determination of the amounts of abdominal fat. Such methods are important as they will allow the evaluation of some of the risk factors underlying the ’metabolic syndrome’. The metabolic syndrome is becoming common in large parts of the world, and it appears that a dominant risk factor for developing this syndrome is abdominal obesity. Subjects that are afflicted with the metabolic syndrome are exposed to a high risk for developing a large range of diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiac failure, and stroke. The aim of this work

  • Ingår i: Proceedings - International Conference on Pattern Recognition. - : IEEE Computer Society. - 9781424421749 - 9781424421756 ; , s. 1-4
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper introduces a new method for automaticquantification of subcutaneous, visceral and nonvisceralinternal fat from MR-images acquired usingthe two point Dixon technique in the abdominal region. The method includes (1) a three dimensionalphase unwrapping to provide water and fat images, (2)an image intensity inhomogeneity correction, and (3) amorphon based registration and segmentation of thetissue. This is followed by an integration of the correctedfat images within the different fat compartmentsthat avoids the partial volume effects associated withtraditional fat segmentation methods. The method wastested on 18 subjects before and after a period of fastfoodhyper-alimentation showing high stability andperformance in all analysis steps.

  • Cardiovascular disease-linked plasma proteins are mainly associated with lung volume
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ERJ Open Research. - : European Respiratory Society. - 2312-0541. ; 9:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have shown that impaired lung function is common and associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Increased levels of several inflammatory and cardiovascular disease-related plasma proteins have been associated with impaired lung function. The aim was to study the association between plasma proteomics and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC) and FEV1/FVC ratio.METHODS: We used a discovery and replication approach in two community-based cohorts, EpiHealth and the Malmö Offspring Study (total n=2874), to cross-sectionally study 242 cardiovascular disease- and metabolism-linked proteins in relation to FEV1, FVC (both % predicted) and FEV1/FVC ratio. A false discovery rate of 5% was used as the significance threshold in the discovery cohort.RESULTS: Plasma fatty acid-binding protein 4, interleukin-1 receptor antagonist, interleukin-6 and leptin were negatively associated with FEV1 and paraoxonase 3 was positively associated therewith. Fatty acid-binding protein 4, fibroblast growth factor 21, interleukin-1 receptor antagonist, interleukin-6 and leptin were negatively associated with FVC and agouti-related protein, insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 2, paraoxonase 3 and receptor for advanced glycation end products were positively associated therewith. No proteins were associated with FEV1/FVC ratio. A sensitivity analysis in EpiHealth revealed only minor changes after excluding individuals with known cardiovascular disease, diabetes or obesity.CONCLUSIONS: Five proteins were associated with both FEV1 and FVC. Four proteins associated with only FVC and none with FEV1/FVC ratio, suggesting associations mainly through lung volume, not airway obstruction. However, additional studies are needed to investigate underlying mechanisms for these findings.

  • Effectiveness of Written Dietary Advice for Improving Blood Lipids in Primary Care Adults-A Pragmatic Randomized Controlled Trial (MYDICLIN)
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nutrients. - : MDPI AG. - 2072-6643. ; 14:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lifestyle management is the first line of treatment for moderately elevated blood lipids in healthy individuals. We investigated the effectiveness of providing food-based written advice for lowering low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (intervention) or triglycerides (control) in a pragmatic randomized controlled trial with two parallel arms from 2018-2019 at a rural primary health care center. We sent feedback letters after 3 weeks and 6 months. Out of the 113 adult primary care patients randomized, 112 completed the study. There were no differences between the intervention and control groups for changes in LDL cholesterol after 3 weeks (mean +/- standard deviation -0.21 +/- 0.38 vs. -0.11 +/- 0.34 mmol/L, p = 0.45) or 6 months (-0.05 +/- 0.47 vs. 0.02 +/- 0.41 mmol/L, p = 0.70) (primary outcome). Following the advice to consume plant sterols and turmeric was associated with a reduction in LDL cholesterol after 3 weeks. Following the advice to consume less carbohydrates was associated with reduced triglycerides. In the intervention arm, 14 individuals (25%) reduced their LDL cholesterol by >= 10% after three weeks. Their reduction was attenuated but maintained after six months (-7.1 +/- 9.2% or -0.31 +/- 0.38 mmol/L, p = 0.01 compared with baseline). They differed only in higher adherence to the advice regarding turmeric. In conclusion, this undemanding intervention had little effect on blood lipids for most individuals.

  • Endothelial dysfunction is associated with impaired lung function in two independent community cohorts
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Respiratory Medicine. - : Elsevier BV. - 0954-6111 .- 1532-3064. ; 143, s. 123-128
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundPrior studies investigating the association between endothelial dysfunction and impaired lung function have been small and inconsistent. The primary aim was to investigate the association between endothelial function and lung function in two community-based cohorts.MethodsWe used a discovery/replication approach to study the association between endothelial function and lung function in the Prospective investigation of Obesity, Energy and Metabolism (POEM, discovery cohort, n = 490, mean age 50.3 ± 0.2 years) and the Prospective Study of the Vasculature in Uppsala Seniors (PIVUS, replication cohort, n = 892, mean age 70.2 ± 0.15 years). Spirometry and three different measures of endothelial function were performed including both the invasive forearm technique (endothelium-dependent and endothelium-independent vasodilation [EDV and EIDV, respectively] and noninvasive flow mediated dilation [FMD]).ResultsAn age and sex adjusted association between lower EDV and lower FEV1 was found in POEM and replicated in PIVUS. After merging the two cohorts, 1 standard deviation decrease in EDV was associated with 1.57% lower FEV1 after additional adjustment for smoking status, body mass index, exercise level, and C-reactive protein (95% confidence intervals 0.63–2.51, p = 0.001). The association was slightly lower albeit still statistically significant after excluding participants without cardiovascular disease and chronic respiratory disease and appeared stronger among previous/current smokers vs. non-smokers and in men vs. women (p for interaction = 0.2 and 0.02 respectively).ConclusionsOur findings suggest that even individuals with sub-clinical impairments of lung function in the community have concomitant endothelial dysfunction.

  • FEV1 and FVC as robust risk factors for cardiovascular disease and mortality : Insights from a large population study.
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Respiratory Medicine. - : Elsevier. - 0954-6111 .- 1532-3064. ; 227
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • INTRODUCTION: Data is limited on influence of forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) in a large adult population, including individuals with normal spirometry at baseline.METHODS: Using the UK Biobank cohort, a multivariable Cox regression analysis was conducted on 406,424 individuals to examine the association between FEV1 and FVC, categorized into three groups based on their percentage of predicted values (%pred) (≥80, 60-80 and < 60), and overall mortality, cardiovascular mortality, myocardial infarction, stroke, and heart failure over approximately 12.5 years. Moreover, a subgroup analysis was conducted on 295,459 individuals who had normal spirometry.RESULTS: Reduced FEV1 and FVC %pred values were associated with an elevated risk across all studied outcomes. Individuals with the lowest FEV1 and FVC %pred values (<60 %) exhibited HR of 1.83 (95 % CI 1.74-1.93) and 1.98 (95 % CI 1.76-2.22) for overall mortality, and 1.96 (95 % CI 1.83-2.1) and 2.26 (95 % CI 1.94-2.63) for cardiovascular mortality. Moreover, a graded association was observed between lower FEV1 and FVC %pred, even among never smokers and individuals with normal spirometry at baseline.DISCUSSION: Reduced FEV1 and FVC represent robust risk factors for cardiovascular disease and mortality. The fact that the increased risk was evident also at FEV1 and FVC levels exceeding 80 %pred challenges the contemporary classification of lung function categories and the notion that the entire FEV1- and FVC-range above 80 % of predicted represents a normal lung function.

  • Plasma proteomics and lung function in four community-based cohorts
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Respiratory Medicine. - : Elsevier. - 0954-6111 .- 1532-3064. ; 176
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Underlying mechanism leading to impaired lung function are incompletely understood.OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether protein profiling can provide novel insights into mechanisms leading to impaired lung function.METHODS: We used four community-based studies (n = 2552) to investigate associations between 79 cardiovascular/inflammatory proteins and forced expiratory volume in 1 s percent predicted (FEV1%) assessed by spirometry. We divided the cohorts into discovery and replication samples and used risk factor-adjusted linear regression corrected for multiple comparison (false discovery rate of 5%). We performed Mendelian randomization analyses using genetic and spirometry data from the UK Biobank (n = 421,986) to assess causality.MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: In cross-sectional analysis, 22 proteins were associated with lower FEV1% in both the discovery and replication sample, regardless of stratification by smoking status. The combined proteomic data cumulatively explained 5% of the variation in FEV1%. In longitudinal analyses (n = 681), higher plasma levels of growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15) and interleukin 6 (IL-6) predicted a more rapid 5-year decline in lung function (change in FEV1% per standard deviation of protein level -1.4, (95% CI, -2.5 to -0.3) for GDF-15, and -0.8, (95% CI, -1.5 to -0.2) for IL-6. Mendelian randomization analysis in UK-biobank provided support for a causal effect of increased GDF-15 levels and reduced FEV1%.CONCLUSIONS: Our combined approach identified GDF-15 as a potential causal factor in the development of impaired lung function in the general population. These findings encourage additional studies evaluating the role of GDF-15 as a causal factor for impaired lung function.

  • QCM-D studies of human norovirus VLPs binding to glycosphingolipids in supported lipid bilayers reveal strain-specific characteristics. : QCM-D studies of norovirus and glycosphingolipid interactions
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Glycobiology. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1460-2423 .- 0959-6658. ; 19:11, s. 1176-84
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Susceptibility to norovirus infection has been linked to secretor status. Norovirus virus-like particles (VLPs; 0- 20 microg/mL) from the Norwalk (GI.1) and Dijon (GII.4) strains were assayed for binding to H type 1 and Lewis a pentaglycosylceramides, incorporated in laterally fluid supported lipid bilayers. Binding kinetics was monitored in real time in 40 microL stationary reaction chambers, using quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) monitoring. Both strains displayed binding only to H type 1 and not to Lewis a glycosphingolipids, typical for epithelial cells of susceptible and resistant individuals, respectively. This binding specificity was confirmed by VLPs binding to the two glycosphingolipids chromatographed on TLC-plates. Experiments using bilayers with mixtures of H type 1 and Lewis a, with the total glycosphingolipid concentration constant at 10 wt%, showed that binding was only dependent on H type 1 concentrations and identical to experiments without additional Lewis a. Both strains showed a threshold concentration of H type 1 below which no binding was observable. The threshold was one order of magnitude higher for the Dijon strain (2 wt% versus 0.25 wt%) demonstrating that the interaction with a significantly larger number of glycosphingolipids was needed for the binding of the Dijon strain. The difference in threshold glycosphingolipid concentrations for the two strains suggests a lower affinity for the glycosphingolipid for the Dijon compared to the Norwalk strain. We propose that VLPs initially bind only a few glycosphingolipids but the binding is subsequently strengthened by lateral diffusion of additional glycosphingolipids moving into the interaction area.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Acta Chiropterologica. - 1508-1109. ; 17:2, s. 359-364
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Activity of bats at an old wind park four km off the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea was monitored during 50 nights from August to October 2013, using an automatic bat detector (Pettersson D500-X) mounted on one of the turbines. Single individuals or pairs of common noctules Nyctalus noctula were recorded on five occasions only (26 and 27 August), all in calm weather and when little or no rotor movement occurred. Since such conditions were unusual (five of 50 nights of observation) the visits by the bats were unlikely to be chance events (migrating bats passing the turbine), but more likely involved bats attracted to the turbines. However, no feeding buzzes were recorded and the bats never stayed near the turbine more than one minute. The turbines studied are lit by 250 W white lights and this could have been the reason why bats visited the turbines, because such lights potentially attract insects. The bats could not have been attracted to the turbines by any factor related of the movement of the rotor or the generator, such as Doppler-effects, noise, heat or electric fields.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a novel method for phase unwrapping for phase sensitive reconstruction in MR imaging. The unwrapped phase is obtained by integrating the phase gradient by solving a Poisson equation. An efficient solver, which has been made publicly available, is used to solve the equation. The proposed method is demonstrated on a fat quantification MRI task that is a part of a prospective study of fat accumulation. The method is compared to a phase unwrapping method based on region growing. Results indicate that the proposed method provides more robust unwrapping. Unlike region growing methods, the proposed method is also straight-forward to implement in 3D.

    • Three dimensional phase sensitive reconstruction on two point Dixon volumes has been implemented with use of the inverse gradient. The results has beencompared with the inverse gradient method in two dimensions as well as with the well established region growing method proposed by Ma. The inversegradient method in 3D is able to unwrap the phase field in uncertain regions where the region growing method and the inverse gradient method in 2D cometo a stop.

  • Wisdom on the Move : Late Antique Traditions in Multicultural Conversation. Essays in Honor of Samuel Rubenson
  • 2020
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wisdom on the Move explores the complexity and flexibility of wisdom traditions in Late Antiquity and beyond. This book studies how sayings, maxims and expressions of spiritual insight travelled across linguistic and cultural borders, between different religions and milieus, and how this multicultural process reshaped these sayings and anecdotes. Wisdom on the Move takes the reader on a journey through late antique religious traditions, from manuscript fragments and folios via the monastic cradle of Egypt, across linguistic and cultural barriers, through Jewish and Biblical wisdom, monastic sayings, and Muslim interpretations. Particular attention is paid to the monastic Apophthegmata Patrum, arguably the most important genre of wisdom literature in the early Christian world.

  • The predictive value of cardiovascular outcomes and mortality assessed by the C-reactive protein to albumin ratio in the UK Biobank
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: BMC Cardiovascular Disorders. - : BioMed Central (BMC). - 1471-2261. ; 24:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The C-reactive protein/albumin ratio (CAR) seems to mirror disease severity and prognosis in several acute disorders particularly in elderly patients, yet less is known about if CAR is superior to C-reactive protein (CRP) in the general population.METHODS: Prospective study design on the UK Biobank, where serum samples of CRP and Albumin were used. Cox regression analyses were conducted to assess all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and heart failure over a follow-up period of approximately 12.5 years. The Cox model was adjusted for established cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors, including age, sex, smoking habits, physical activity level, BMI level, systolic blood pressure, LDL-cholesterol, statin treatment, diabetes, and previous CVD, with hazard ratios (HRs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Analyses were also stratified by sex, CRP level (< 10 and ≥ 10 mg/ml) and age (< 60 and ≥ 60 years).RESULTS: In total, 411,506 individuals (186,043 men and 225,463 women) were included. In comparisons between HRs for all adverse outcomes, the results were similar or identical for CAR and CRP. For example, both CAR and CRP, adjusted HRs for all-cause mortality were 1.13 (95% CI 1.12-1.14). Regarding CVD mortality, the adjusted HR for CAR was 1.14 (95% CI 1.12-1.15), while for CRP, it was 1.13 (95% CI 1.11-1.15).CONCLUSIONS: Within this study CAR was not superior to CRP in predictive ability of mortality or CVD disorders.CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: Not applicable (cohort study).
