  • Knowledge of periodontitis and self-perceived oral health : a survey of periodontal specialist patients
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Swedish Dental Journal. - : Sveriges tandläkarförbund. - 0347-9994. ; 37:1, s. 49-58
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to investigate changes in knowledge of periodontal disease among patients referred to periodontal specialist clinics. A further aim was to investigate the patients' self- perceived oral health before the treatment. Patients referred to five specialist clinics in periodontology for comprehensive periodontal treatment were consecutive sampled. The study was based on a questionnaire in a before and after design. The first questionnaire was sent to the patients before visiting the specialist clinic and the second was sent after six months. Four questions were analysed, two to measure knowledge about periodontitis and two to measure the patients self- perceived oral health. The first questionnaire was sent by post to 273 patients with a response rate of 31%. The second questionnaire was sent to 85 patients with a response rate of 73%. The results of the study showed a statistically significant improvement of correct answers on the knowledge questions after six months was found for scaling (p = 0.006), X-ray examination (p = 0.001) and increased space between the teeth (p = 0.001). The most frequent self-perceived trouble from the mouth was bleeding gum (70%) and sensitive teeth (51%). In conclusion knowledge of periodontitis improved after visiting the specialist clinic of periodontology. Many of the patients experienced some problems of the mouth.

  • Social equality and dental conditions--a study of an adult population in Southern Sweden.
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Swedish Dental Journal. - : Swedish Dental Association. - 0347-9994. ; 24:4, s. 155-64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aimed to: describe dental conditions--focusing on prosthodontic variables--in relation to social conditions in the late 1990s in an adult population of Southern Sweden, evaluate if a change could be traced in the pattern of socioeconomic influences on dental conditions, and study if various attitudes toward dental care were associated with social as well as dental conditions. The study was based on questionnaire responses. Significant differences in dental conditions and denture prevalence were found for age and education. To a majority of the sample it was very important to have own teeth and/or fixed restorations and the opportunity to attend regular dental care. The cost for dental care was very important for 52% of the sample especially for men, those with low education, and those wearing removable denture. Need for dental care that could not be provided for because of the costs was experienced by 9%. Eighteen percent stated that they once or more had refrained from dental care because of the cost. Those with removable dentures and low education dominated. Besides socioeconomic differences in dental conditions, there were sociodental differences in attitudes concerning the importance of costs, self-estimated needs, and cost-barriers for dental care.

  • Detection of neural activity in functional MRI using canonical correlation analysis.
  • 2001
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A novel method for detecting neural activity in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data is introduced. It is based on canonical correlation analysis (CCA), which is a multivariate extension of the univariate correlation analysis widely used in fMRI. To detect homogeneous regions of activity, the method combines a subspace modeling of the hemodynamic response and the use of spatial relationships. The spatial correlation that undoubtedly exists in fMR images is completely ignored when univariate methods such as as t-tests, F-tests, and ordinary correlation analysis are used. Such methods are for this reason very sensitive to noise, leading to difficulties in detecting activation and significant contributions of false activations. In addition, the proposed CCA method also makes it possible to detect activated brain regions based not only on thresholding a correlation coefficient, but also on physiological parameters such as temporal shape and delay of the hemodynamic response. Excellent performance on real fMRI data is demonstrated. Magn Reson Med 45:323-330, 2001

  • Psychosocial aspects of health in adolescence : The influence of gender, and general self-concept
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Adolescent Health. - : Elsevier BV. - 1054-139X .- 1879-1972. ; 36:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The aim of this study was to describe age and gender differences in psychosocial aspects of health in adolescents. A further aim was to explore if self-rated behavior problems varied with the adolescents' general self-concept and sense of coherence. Methods: Questionnaires on self-rated psychosocial aspects of health were answered by 282 (n = 282/390) randomly selected adolescents, aged 13-22 years (M 17.9/18.0). The instruments used were "I think I am (ITIA)," "Youth Self Report (YSR)," "Sense of coherence (SOC)," and "Family APGAR." Differences between males and females (cross-individual grouping) were analyzed using nonparametric tests. A cluster analysis was performed using a three-cluster solution to identify and describe profiles (person-centered grouping). Results: Compared with males, adolescent females scored less favorably on self-esteem (ITIA) (p =. 028), reported more behavior problems (YSR) (p =. 000), and showed a lower sense of coherence (SOC) (p =. 003). The differences were most evident in the age group 15-17 years. The three clusters significantly differed from each other regarding how high proportions of problems the adolescents of each profile reported. Conclusions: Compared with male adolescents, adolescent females experienced a poorer psychosocial health in somatic, depressive, and internalizing areas. The result indicated that psychological factors had a major impact on the proportions of problems that the adolescents reported. © 2005 Society for Adolescent Medicine. All rights reserved.

  • Explanatory models for clinical and subjective indicators of periodontal disease in an adult population
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Periodontology. - : John Wiley and Sons. - 0303-6979 .- 1600-051X. ; 27:1, s. 22-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The aim of this study was to analyze indicators of periodontal disease using: (1) community periodontal index of treatment needs (CPITN), (2) subjectively reported change of front teeth position, and 3) subjectively reported gingival bleeding. Method: These 3 indicators were used in models with explanatory variables from 4 domains: (A) socio-economic attributes, (B) general health and health-related lifestyle, (C) dental attitudes and behaviors, and (D) dental status expressed as (number of teeth and DFT) for the clinically-determined dependent variables. In 1992, the study was carried out cross-sectionally in all 50-year olds in 2 Swedish counties using a questionnaire (n=6343) and clinical investigation of a 20% subsample (n=1040). Results: Multiple and logistic regression analysis showed that explanatory patterns varied for the clinical and subjective indicators. Use of tobacco had strong effects in all models as did high care utilization. There were few associations with socio-economic attributes. The 2 subjective indicators "changed front position" and "gingival bleeding" associated with attitudes, behaviors and subjective health. Number of teeth and DFT covaried with clinical indicators. Conclusions: The main conclusions from this study are: (1) that it is possible to find multivariate models with acceptable goodness of fit for prediction of occurrence of periodontal indicators, and (2) that the lack of relation between social attributes and the disease gives arguments for a biological provenance of periodontitis.
