  • AGATA - Advanced GAmma Tracking Array
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 0167-5087 .- 1872-9576. ; 668, s. 26-58
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) is a European project to develop and operate the next generation γ-ray spectrometer. AGATA is based on the technique of γ-ray energy tracking in electrically segmented high-purity germanium crystals. This technique requires the accurate determination of the energy, time and position of every interaction as a γ ray deposits its energy within the detector volume. Reconstruction of the full interaction path results in a detector with very high efficiency and excellent spectral response. The realisation of γ-ray tracking and AGATA is a result of many technical advances. These include the development of encapsulated highly segmented germanium detectors assembled in a triple cluster detector cryostat, an electronics system with fast digital sampling and a data acquisition system to process the data at a high rate. The full characterisation of the crystals was measured and compared with detector- response simulations. This enabled pulse-shape analysis algorithms, to extract energy, time and position, to be employed. In addition, tracking algorithms for event reconstruction were developed. The first phase of AGATA is now complete and operational in its first physics campaign. In the future AGATA will be moved between laboratories in Europe and operated in a series of campaigns to take advantage of the different beams and facilities available to maximise its science output. The paper reviews all the achievements made in the AGATA project including all the necessary infrastructure to operate and support the spectrometer. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Isomer and Beta-decay Spectroscopy of Tz=1 Isotopes Below the N=Z=50 Shell Gap
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6596 .- 1742-6588. ; 312:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The RISING setup at the GSI-FRS facility was used to investigate the isomer and beta decays in N~Z~50 Cd, Ag and Pd isotopes. A preliminary analysis of the data has revealed new results on the Tz=1, 94Pd, 96Ag and 98Cd isotopes. In 94Pd a new high-spin isomer was observed, whilst in 96Ag 3 new isomeric states were identified, including core-excited states. In 98Cd a new high-energy isomeric γ-ray transition is observed, thus enabling us to confirm the previous spin assignment for the core-excited 12+ isomer.

  • Observation of a new high-spin isomer in Pd-94
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 82:6, s. 061309-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A second gamma-decaying high-spin isomeric state, with a half-life of 197(22) ns, has been identified in the N = Z + 2 nuclide Pd-94 as part of a stopped-beam Rare Isotope Spectroscopic INvestigation at GSI (RISING) experiment. Weisskopf estimates were used to establish a tentative spin/parity of 19(-), corresponding to the maximum possible spin of a negative parity state in the restricted (p(1/2), g(9/2)) model space of empirical shell model calculations. The reproduction of the E3 decay properties of the isomer required an extension of the model space to include the f (5/2) and p(3/2) orbitals using the CD-Bonn potential. This is the first time that such an extension has been required for a high-spin isomer in the vicinity of Sn-100 and reveals the importance of such orbits for understanding the decay properties of high-spin isomers in this region. However, despite the need for the extended model space for the E3 decay, the dominant configuration for the 19(-) state remains (p p(1/2)(-1)g(9/2)(-3))(11)circle times(nu g(9/2)(-2))(8). The half-life of the known, 14(+), isomer was remeasured and yielded a value of 499(13) ns.

  • 1(-) and 2(+) discrete states in Zr-90 populated via the (O-17, O-17 'gamma) reaction
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 91:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 2(+) and 1(-) states in Zr-90 were populated via the (O-17, O-17 'gamma) reaction at 340 MeV. The gamma decay was measured with high resolution using the AGATA (advanced gamma tracking array demonstrator array). Differential cross sections were obtained at few different angles for the scattered particle. The results of the elastic scattering and inelastic excitation of 2(+), 3(,)(-) and 1(-) states are compared with distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) calculations, using both the standard collective form factor and a form factor obtained by folding microscopically calculated transition densities. This allowed to extract the isoscalar component of the 1(-) state at 6.424 MeV. The comparison of the present (17O, 17O 'gamma) data with existing (gamma, gamma') and (p, p') data in the corresponding region of the gamma continuum (6-11 MeV), characterized by a large E1 component, shows completely different behaviors of the cross section as a function of the nuclear excitation energy. The comparison of the data with DWBA calculations suggests a decrease of the isoscalar strength in the cross section with increasing excitation energy.

  • Electromagnetic properties of vibrational bands in Er-170
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 47:2, s. 25-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excited states of the nucleus Er-170 have been studied by Coulomb excitation using the GASP gamma-ray detector system at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. The ground-state band along with a low-lying K-pi = 0(+) band and gamma-vibrational band were populated during the experiment. Based on the measured gamma-ray yields, a set of interband and intraband matrix elements has been extracted using the Coulomb excitation code GOSIA. The resulting E2 matrix elements are compared to collective model predictions.

  • The (6+) isomer in 102Sn revisited : Neutron and proton effective charges close to the double shell closure
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 820
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a high-energy fragmentation experiment at GSI an Iπ = (6+) isomer and its γ-decay are identified in 102Sn, the two-neutron neighbour of the doubly-magic 100Sn. Its half-life is measured to be T1/2 = 367(11) ns. The possible existence of further isomers is discussed in the framework of large-scale shell model (LSSM) calculations including up to five particle-hole excitations of the 100Sn core. From the precise B(E2; 6+ → 4+) strength and the recently remeasured value for B(E2; 8+ → 6+) in the two-proton hole neighbour 98Cd effective E2 polarization charges for protons and neutrons were inferred including LSSM corrections within the full N=4 0hω space. The results are discussed in comparison to predicted and empirically determined effective operators.

  • Quadrupole collectivity in Ca-42 from low-energy Coulomb excitation with AGATA
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 97:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ACoulomb-excitation experiment to study electromagnetic properties of Ca-42 was performed using a 170-MeV calcium beam from the TANDEM XPU facility at INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. gamma rays from excited states in Ca-42 were measured with the AGATA spectrometer. The magnitudes and relative signs of ten E2 matrix elements coupling six low-lying states in Ca-42, including the diagonal E2 matrix elements of 2(1)(+) and 2(2)(+) states, were determined using the least-squares code GOSIA. The obtained set of reduced E2 matrix elements was analyzed using the quadrupole sum rule method and yielded overall quadrupole deformation for 0(1),(+)(2) and 2(1,2)(+) states, as well as triaxiality for 0(1,2)(+) states, establishing the coexistence of a weakly deformed ground-state band and highly deformed slightly triaxial sideband in Ca-42. The experimental results were compared with the state-of-the-art large-scale shell-model and beyond-mean-field calculations, which reproduce well the general picture of shape coexistence in Ca-42.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science. - 0018-9499 .- 1558-1578. ; 60:5, s. 3526-3531
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work describes new electronics for the EX-OGAM2 (HP-Ge detector array) and NEDA (BC501A-based neutron detector array). A new digitizing card with high resolution has been designed for gamma-ray and neutron spectroscopy experiments. The higher bandwidth requirement of the NEDA signals, together with the necessity for accuracy, require a high sampling rate in order to preserve the shape for real-time Pulse Shape Analysis (PSA). The PSA is of paramount importance for the NEDA to discriminate between neutrons and gamma-ray signals. Both high resolution and high speed parameters are often difficult to achieve in a single electronic unit. These constraints, together with the need to build new digitizing electronics to improve performance and flexibility of signal analysis in nuclear physics experiments, led to the development a new FADC mezzanine card. In this work, the design and development are described, including the characterization procedure and the preliminary measurement results.

    • A study of the dimensions and performance of a single detector of the future neutron detector array NEDA was performed by means of Monte Carlo simulations, using GEANT4. Two different liquid scintillators were evaluated: the hydrogen based BC501A and the deuterated BC537. The efficiency and the probability that one neutron will trigger a signal in more than one detector were investigated as a function of the detector size. The simulations were validated comparing the results to experimental measurements performed with two existing neutron detectors, with different geometries, based on the liquid scintillator BC501

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 1555:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A projectile Coulomb-excitation experiment was performed at the radioactive ion beam facility HIE-ISOLDE at CERN. The radioactive 140Nd and 142Sm ions were post accelerated to the energy of 4.62 MeV/A and impinged on a 1.45 mg/cm2-thin 208Pb target. The γ rays depopulating the Coulomb-excited states were recorded by the HPGe-array MINIBALL. The scattered charged particles were detected by a double-sided silicon strip detector in forward direction. Experimental γ-ray intensities were used for the determination of electromagnetic transition matrix elements. Preliminary results for the reduced transition strength of the B(M1 23+ to 21+)=0.35(19) μN2 of 140Nd and a first estimation for 142Sm have been deduced using the Coulomb-excitation calculation software GOSIA. The 23+ states of 140Nd and 142Sm show indications of being the main fragment of the proton-neutron mixed-symmetry 21, ms+ state.

  • Collective nature of low-lying excitations in Zn-70,Zn-72,Zn-74 from lifetime measurements using the AGATA spectrometer demonstrator
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 87:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Neutron-rich nuclei with protons in the fp shell show an onset of collectivity around N=40. Spectroscopic information is required to understand the underlying mechanism and to determine the relevant terms of the nucleon-nucleon interaction that are responsible for the evolution of the shell structure in this mass region. Methods: We report on the lifetime measurement of the first 2(+) and 4(+) states in Zn-70,Zn-72 ,Zn-74 and the first 6(+) state in Zn-72 using the recoil distance Doppler shift method. The experiment was carried out at the INFN Laboratory of Legnaro with the AGATA demonstrator, first phase of the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array of highly segmented, high-purity germanium detectors coupled to the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer. The excited states of the nuclei of interest were populated in the deep inelastic scattering of a Ge-76 beam impinging on a U-238 target. Results: The maximum of collectivity along the chain of Zn isotopes is observed for Zn-72 at N=42. An unexpectedly long lifetime of 20(-5.2)(+1.8) ps was measured for the 4(+) state in Zn-74. Conclusions: Our results lead to small values of the B(E2;4(1)(+) -> 21(+))/B(E2;2(1)(+->)0(1)(+)) ratio for Zn-72,Zn-74, suggesting a significant noncollective contribution to these excitations. These experimental results are not reproduced by state-of-the-art microscopic models and call for lifetime measurements beyond the first 2(+) state in heavy zinc and nickel isotopes.

  • Prediction of axle fatigue life based on field measurements
  • 2022
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • To facilitate the adoption of a condition-based maintenance approach for railway axles, more knowledge regarding operational loading is needed. In the present work, statistical distributions on axle stresses for revenue vehicles have been derived. To this end, raw strain spectra have been gathered during field measurements using an instrumented telemetry mounted on a powered axle running within the Swedish railway network. Strain spectra are transformed into bending stress spectra which are used to estimate the statistical distributions of axle stresses for different track sections. Both the derived stress spectra and the estimated statistical distributions are used as input to fatigue life analyses. In these analyses, Wöhler (stress–cycle) curves estimated for varying axle surface conditions (which can be related to different axle maintenance conditions) are used to predict axle lives. The proposed method allows to rapidly post-process data obtained during field tests, to quantify indications on the health status of track and of the wheelset from these, and to estimate resulting fatigue life. This would aid in asset management by enhanced status characterisation, improved inspection and maintenance planning, and enhanced possibilities to follow-up any non-conformities.

    • BC-501 is a liquid scintillation detector sensitive to both neutrons and gamma rays. As these produce slightly different signals in the detector, they can be discriminated based on their pulse shape (Pulse Shape Discrimination, PSD). This paper reports on results obtained with several PSD techniques and compares them with a method based on artificial neural networks (NN) developed for this application. Results indicated a large performance advantage of NN especially in the region of small deposited energy which typically contains the majority of the events. NN were also applied for discrimination of pile-up events with good results. This framework can be implemented on some of the most recent programmable data acquisition cards and it is suitable for real-time application.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 86:4, s. 041301-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present results from stopped beam rare isotope spectroscopic investigations at the GSI (RISING) experiment based on the detection of gamma-ray transitions following the beta decay of Pd-94. A comparison between the measured low-lying level scheme of Rh-94 and the prediction from shell-model calculations reveals the important roles of the g(7/2) and g(9/2) orbitals in explaining the structural features. The low values of the Gamow-Teller strengths B(GT) can be attributed to the influence of the neutron-proton interaction, which gives rise to an increased seniority mixing for the nuclear states, thereby leading to a fragmentation of the strength to several daughter levels. These results provide further strong indications that Pd-94 resides in the middle of a structural transition region in the Pd isotopes as the N = Z line is approached.

  • Collective Structure of Neutron-Rich Rare-Earth Nuclei and Development of Instrumentation for Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy
  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Neutron-rich rare-earth nuclei are among the most collective nuclei that can be found in nature. In particular, the doubly mid-shell nucleus 170Dy is expected to be the nucleus where the collective structure is maximized. This has implications for the astrophysical r-process, since it has been suggested that the collectivity maximum plays an important role in the abundances of the rare-earth elements that are created in supernova explosions. In this work, the collective structure of the five nuclei 168,170Dy and 167,168,169Ho are studied and different theoretical models are used to interpret the evolution of collectivity around the mid-shell. In order to produce and study even more neutron-rich nuclei in this mass region, new radioactive ion beam facilities will be a valuable tool. These facilities, however, require advanced instruments to study the weak signals of exotic nuclei in a high background environment. Two of these instruments are the γ-ray tracking spectrometer AGATA and the neutron detector array NEDA. For AGATA to work satisfactorily, the interaction position of the gamma rays must be determined with an accuracy of at least five millimetres. The position resolution is measured in this work using a model independent method based on the Doppler correction capabilities of the detector at two different distances between the detector and the source. For NEDA, one of the critical parameters is its ability to discriminate between neutrons and γ rays. By using digital electronics it is possible to employ advanced and efficient algorithms for pulse-shape discrimination. In this work, digital versions of the common analogue methods are shownto give as good, or better, results compared to the ones obtained using analogue electronics. Another method which effectively distinguishes between neutrons and γ rays is based on artificial neural networks. This method is also investigated in this work and is shown to yield even better results.

    • The basic principles of detection of fast neutrons with liquid scintillator detectors are reviewed, together with a real example in the form of the Neutron Wall array. Two of the challenges in neutron detection, discrimination of neutrons and gamma rays and identification of cross talk between detectors due to neutron scattering, are briefly discussed, as well as possible solutions to these problems. The possibilities of using digital techniques for pulse-shape discrimination are examined. Results from a digital and analog versions of the zero cross-over algorithm are presented. The digital pulse-shape discrimination is shown to give, at least, as good results as the corresponding analogue version.

    • Discrimination of the detection of fast neutrons and γ rays in a liquid scintillator detector has been investigated using digital pulse-processing techniques. An experimental setup with a 252Cf source, a BC-501 liquid scintillator detector, and a BaF2 detector was used to collect waveforms with a 100 Ms/s, 14 bit sampling ADC. Three identical ADCs were combined to increase the sampling frequency to 300 Ms/s. Four different digital pulse-shape analysis algorithms were developed and compared to each other and to data obtained with an analogue neutron–γ discrimination unit. Two of the digital algorithms were based on the charge comparison method, while the analogue unit and the other two digital algorithms were based on the zero-crossover method. Two different figure-of-merit parameters, which quantify the neutron–γ discrimination properties, were evaluated for all four digital algorithms and for the analogue data set. All of the digital algorithms gave similar or better figure-of-merit values than what was obtained with the analogue setup. A detailed study of the discrimination properties as a function of sampling frequency and bit resolution of the ADC was performed. It was shown that a sampling ADC with a bit resolution of 12 bits and a sampling frequency of 100 Ms/s is adequate for achieving an optimal neutron–γ discrimination for pulses having a dynamic range for deposited neutron energies of 0.3–12 MeV. An investigation of the influence of the sampling frequency on the time resolution was made. A FWHM of 1.7 ns was obtained at 100 Ms/s.

    • High-spin states of K-40 have been populated in the fusion-evaporation reaction C-12(Si-30,np)K-40 and studied by means of gamma-ray spectroscopy techniques using one triple-cluster detector of the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array at the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. Several states with excitation energy up to 8 MeV and spin up to 10(-) have been discovered. These states are discussed in terms of J = 3 and T = 0 neutron-proton hole pairs. Shell-model calculations in a large model space have shown good agreement with the experimental data for most of the energy levels. The evolution of the structure of this nucleus is here studied as a function of excitation energy and angular momentum.

  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 638:1, s. 96-109
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The interaction position resolution of the segmented HPGe detectors of an AGATA triple cluster detector has been studied through Monte Carlo simulations and in an in-beam experiment. A new method based on measuring the energy resolution of Doppler-corrected γ-ray spectra at two different target to detector distances is described. This gives the two-dimensional position resolution in the plane perpendicular to the direction of the emitted γ-ray. The γ-ray tracking was used to determine the full energy of the γ-rays and the first interaction point, which is needed for the Doppler correction. Five different heavy-ion induced fusion-evaporation reactions and a reference reaction were selected for the simulations. The results of the simulations show that the method works very well and gives a systematic deviation of in the FWHM of the interaction position resolution for the γ-ray energy range from 60 keV to 5 MeV. The method was tested with real data from an in-beam measurement using a 30Si beam at 64 MeV on a thin 12C target. Pulse-shape analysis of the digitized detector waveforms and γ-ray tracking was performed to determine the position of the first interaction point, which was used for the Doppler corrections. Results of the dependency of the interaction position resolution on the γ-ray energy and on the energy, axial location and type of the first interaction point, are presented. The FWHM of the interaction position resolution varies roughly linearly as a function of γ-ray energy from 8.5 mm at 250 keV to 4 mm at 1.5 MeV, and has an approximately constant value of about 4 mm in the γ-ray energy range from 1.5 to 4 MeV.

    • In this work we present a comparison between the two liquid scintillators BC-501A and BC-537 in terms of their performance regarding the pulse-shape discrimination between neutrons and gamma rays. Special emphasis is put on the application of artificial neural networks. The results show a systematically higher gamma-ray rejection ratio for BC-501A compared to BC-537 applying the commonly used charge comparison method. Using the artificial neural network approach the discrimination quality was improved to more than 95% rejection efficiency of gamma rays over the energy range 150 to 1000 keV for both BC-501A and BC-537. However, due to the larger light output of BC-501A compared to BC-537, neutrons could be identified in BC-501A using artificial neural networks down to a recoil proton energy of 800 keV compared to a recoil deuteron energy of 1200 keV for BC-537. We conclude that using artificial neural networks it is possible to obtain the same gamma-ray rejection quality from both BC-501A and BC-537 for neutrons above a low-energy threshold. This threshold is, however, lower for BC-501A, which is important for nuclear structure spectroscopy experiments of rare reaction channels where low-energy interactions dominates.

  • Nuclear deformations in the region of the A=160 r-process abundance peak
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physica Scripta. - 0031-8949 .- 1402-4896. ; T150, s. 014038-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the abundance spectrum of r-process nuclei the most prominent features are the peaks that form when the r-process flow passes through the closed neutron shells. However, there are also other features in the abundance spectrum that cannot be explained by shell effects; for example, the peak in the region of the rare-earth nuclei around mass A = 160. It has been argued that this peak is related to the deformation maximum of the neutron-rich isotopes. In recent years, both experimental and theoretical work has been carried out to study the deformation of neutron-rich rare-earth nuclei and to search for the point of maximum deformation. This work has focused on the nuclei around Dy-170 with the aim of understanding the evolution of collectivity in the neutron shell with 82 < N < 126. These investigations will be discussed in terms of the Harris parameters of the variable moment of inertia model. Finally, we will discuss the possibility of reaching further into the neutron-rich rare-earth region in the future at the new experimental facilities using radioactive beams.

  • Spectroscopy of neutron-rich Dy-168,Dy-170 : Yrast band evolution close to the NpNn valence maximum
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 81:3, s. 034310-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The yrast sequence of the neutron-rich dysprosium isotope Dy-168 has been studied using multinucleon transfer reactions following collisions between a 460-MeV Se-82 beam and an Er-170 target. The reaction products were identified using the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer and the gamma rays detected using the CLARA HPGe-detector array. The 2(+) and 4(+) members of the previously measured ground-state rotational band of Dy-168 have been confirmed and the yrast band extended up to 10(+). A tentative candidate for the 4(+) -> 2(+) transition in Dy-170 was also identified. The data on these nuclei and on the lighter even-even dysprosium isotopes are interpreted in terms of total Routhian surface calculations and the evolution of collectivity in the vicinity of the proton-neutron valence product maximum is discussed.

  • High-spin structure of Xe-134
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: PHYSICAL REVIEW C. - 2469-9985. ; 93:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Detailed spectroscopic information on the N similar to 82 nuclei is necessary to benchmark shell-model calculations in the region. The nuclear structure above long-lived isomers in Xe-134 is investigated after multinucleon transfer (MNT) and actinide fission. Xenon-134 was populated as (i) a transfer product in Xe-136 + U-238 and Xe-136 + Pb-208 MNT reactions and (ii) as a fission product in the Xe-136 + U-238 reaction employing the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA). Trajectory reconstruction has been applied for the complete identification of beamlike transfer products with the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA. The Xe-136 + Pt-198 MNT reaction was studied with the gamma-ray spectrometer GAMMASPHERE in combination with the gas detector array Compact Heavy Ion Counter (CHICO). Several high-spin states in Xe-134 on top of the two long-lived isomers are discovered based on gamma gamma-coincidence relationships and information on the gamma-ray angular distributions as well as excitation energies from the total kinetic energy loss and fission fragments. The revised level scheme of Xe-134 is extended up to an

  • Isomers and high-spin structures in the N=81 isotones Xe-135 and Ba-137
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: PHYSICAL REVIEW C. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2469-9985. ; 95:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The high-spin structures and isomers of the N = 81 isotones Xe-135 and Ba-137 are investigated after multinucleon-transfer (MNT) and fusion-evaporation reactions. Both nuclei are populated (i) in Xe-136+ U-238 and (ii) Xe-136+ Pb-208 MNT reactions employing the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, (iii) in the Xe-136+ Pt-198 MNT reaction employing the gamma-ray array GAMMASPHERE in combination with the gas-detector array CHICO, and (iv) via a B-11+ Te-130 fusion-evaporation reaction with the HORUS gamma-ray array at the University of Cologne. The high-spin level schemes of Xe-135 and Ba-137 are considerably extended to higher energies. The 2058-keV (19/2(-)) state in Xe-135 is identified as an isomer, closing a gap in the systematics along the N = 81 isotones. Its half-life is measured to be 9.0(9) ns, corresponding to a reduced transition probability of B(E2,19/2(-) -> 15/2(-)) = 0.52(6) W.u. The experimentally deduced reduced transition probabilities of the isomeric states are compared to shell-model predictions. Latest shell-model calculations reproduce the experimental findings generally well and provide guidance to the interpretation of the new levels.
