  • Multiparticle emission in the decay of Ar-31
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 89:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A multihit capacity setup was used to study the decay of the dripline nucleus Ar-31, produced at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. A spectroscopic analysis of the beta-delayed three-proton decay of Ar-31 is presented for the first time together with a quantitative analysis of the beta-delayed 2p gamma decay. A new method for determination of the spin of low-lying levels in the beta p daughter 30S using proton-proton angular correlations is presented and used to determine that the spin of the 5.2-MeV level is most likely 3(+) with 4(+) also possible. The half-life of Ar-31 is found to be 15.1(3) ms. An improved analysis of the Fermi beta strength including the beta 3p-decay mode gives a total measured branching ratio of 3.60(44)%, which is lower than the theoretical value found to be 4.24(43)%. Finally, a previously unidentified. transition from the isobaric analog state in the decay of Ar-33 has been found.

  • Relative proton and gamma widths of astrophysically important states in S-30 studied in the beta-delayed decay of Ar-31
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 87:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Resonances just above the proton threshold in S-30 affect the P-29(p, gamma)S-30 reaction under astrophysical conditions. The (p,gamma)-reaction rate is currently determined indirectly and depends on the properties of the relevant resonances. We present here a method for finding the ratio between the proton and gamma partial widths of resonances in S-30. The widths are determined from the beta 2p- and beta p gamma-decay of Ar-31, which is produced at the ISOLDE radioactive ion beam facility at the European research organization CERN. Experimental limits on the ratio between the proton and gamma partial widths for astrophysical relevant levels in S-30 have been found for the first time. A level at 4689.2(24) keV is identified in the gamma spectrum, and an upper limit on the Gamma(p)/ Gamma gamma ratio of 0.26 (95% C.L.) is found. In the two-proton spectrum two levels at 5227(3) keV and 5847(4) keV are identified. These levels were previously seen to gamma decay and upper limits on the Gamma(gamma)/Gamma(p) ratio of 0.5 and 9, respectively, (95% C.L.) are found, where the latter differs from previous calculations.

  • Sizeable beta-strength in Ar-31 (beta 3p) decay
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 737, s. 383-387
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present for the first time precise spectroscopic information on the recently discovered decay mode beta-delayed 3p-emission. The detection of the 3p events gives an increased sensitivity to the high energy part of the Gamow-Teller strength distribution from the decay of Ar-31 revealing that as much as 30% of the strength resides in the beta 3p-decaymode. A simplified description of how the main decay modes evolve as the excitation energy increases in Cl-31 is provided.

  • Precise Determination of the Unperturbed B8 Neutrino Spectrum
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Phys. Rev. Lett.. ; 108:16, s. Art. no. 162502-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A measurement of the final state distribution of the 8B beta decay, obtained by implanting a 8B beam in a double-sided silicon strip detector, is reported here. The present spectrum is consistent with a recent independent precise measurement performed by our collaboration at the IGISOL facility, Jyvaskyla [O. S.Kirsebom et al., Phys. Rev. C 83, 065802 (2011)]. It shows discrepancies with previously measuredspectra, leading to differences in the derived neutrino spectrum. Thanks to a low detection threshold, theneutrino spectrum is for the first time directly extracted from the measured final state distribution, thusavoiding the uncertainties related to the extrapolation of R-matrix fits. Combined with the IGISOL data, this leads to an improvement of the overall errors and the extension of the neutrino spectrum at highenergy. The new unperturbed neutrino spectrum represents a benchmark for future measurements of thesolar neutrino flux as a function of energy.

  • The β-decay approach for studying 12C
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 111:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The β-decays of the mirror nuclei 12B and 12N both populate states in 12C and they are therefore a precious source of information about this nucleus. Due to the selection rules of β-decay only 0+, 1+ and 2+ states are populated. This allows a very clean study of unbound states just above the 3α-threshold with those spin and parities. This probe has been applied in two experiments using two complementary experimental techniques: in the first the three α-particles emitted after β-decay are measured in coincidence in separate detectors using the ISOL method, while in the second method 12B and 12N are implanted in a detector and the summed energy of the three α-particles is measured directly. Preliminary results from the two approaches are presented. © 2008 IOP Publishing Ltd.

  • Precise branching ratios to unbound 12C states from 12N and 12B [beta]-decays
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 678:5, s. 459 - 464
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two complementary experimental techniques have been used to extract precise branching ratios to unbound states in 12C from 12N and 12B [beta]-decays. In the first the three [alpha]-particles emitted after [beta]-decay are measured in coincidence in separate detectors, while in the second method 12N and 12B are implanted in a detector and the summed energy of the three [alpha]-particles is measured directly. For the narrow states at 7.654 MeV (0+) and 12.71 MeV (1+) the resulting branching ratios are both smaller than previous measurements by a factor of [similar, equals]2. The experimental results are compared to no-core shell model calculations with realistic interactions from chiral perturbation theory, and inclusion of three-nucleon forces is found to give improved agreement.

  • R-matrix analysis of the beta decays of 12N and 12B
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 81:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The β decays of 12N and 12B have been studied at KVI and JYFL to resolve the composition of the broad and interfering 0+ and 2+ strengths in the triple-α continuum. For the first time a complete treatment of 3α decay is presented including all major breakup channels. A multilevel, many-channel R-matrix formalism has been developed for the complete description of the breakup in combination with the recently published separate analysis of angular correlations. We find that, in addition to the Hoyle state at 7.65 MeV, more than one 0+ and 2+ state is needed to reproduce the spectra. Broad 03+ and 22+ states are found between 10.5 and 12 MeV in this work. The presence of β strength up to the 12N Q-value window suggests the presence of additional 0+ and 2+ components in the 12C structure at energies above 12.7 MeV.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 77:1, s. 014309-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Advanced Time-Delayed beta gamma gamma(t) method was used to measure lifetimes of selected high-spin states in Cd-122 populated from beta(-) decay of the J(pi)=(9(-)) isomer in Ag-122. From the gamma gamma coincidences, a new energy level was established at 2616.6 keV with a suggested spin-parity assignment of 8(-). Lifetimes were determined for the high-spin states at 2616.6 and 2502.7 keV as T-1/2=1.35(29) ns and 0.24(6) ns, respectively. The transition rates for gamma rays de-exciting the 7(-) states in the N=74 isotones of Cd-122, Sn-124, and Te-126 were found to be very similar.

    • The nuclear structure of states in C-12 have been a subject of interest for both theory and experiment since the early days of nuclear physics. Many open questions remain, especially concerning the existence and properties of 0(+) and 2(+) states in the triple alpha continuum. A series of experiments have been performed using beta-decay of N-12 and B-12 to probe these states. The latest experiment was performed at KVI using an implantation method, measuring the sum energy of the three alpha-particles directly. Preliminary results from this experiment will be presented.

    • Accurate measurements of the B-8 neutrino spectrum are important for the interpretation of solar neutrino data. Experimentally, the B-8 neutrino spectrum can be obtained from the measurement of the beta-delayed alpha spectrum. We report on an alpha-alpha coincidence measurement performed at the IGISOL facility in Jyvaskyla, Finland. Our measurement allows extensive cross-checks to be performed and gives a more intense neutrino spectrum at high energies compared to the present standard. The deviation reaches 4% at the end point of the spectrum. Below 11 MeV, the deviation is less than 1%.

    • The JYFLTRAP double Penning-trap system was moved to a new location along with the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-line (IGISOL) facility at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä. The move made it possible to upgrade various parts of the facility. For example, separate beam lines for JYFLTRAP and the collinear laser spectroscopy station were constructed after the radio-frequency quadrupole cooler and buncher. In this contribution we give an overview of the new JYFLTRAP facility and results from the first stable ion-beam tests.

  • Shape coexistence in 66Se
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 844
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The nuclear structure of 66Se, nucleus beyond the N=Z line on the proton-rich side of the valley of stability, was investigated by the neutron knock-out reaction 67Se(12C,X)66Se using a 12C target. The analysis of the singles spectrum of the γ-rays emitted during the de-excitation of the populated low-lying excited states revealed two previously detected (927(4) keV, 1460(32) keV) and three new (744(6) keV, 1210(17) keV, 1661(23) keV) transitions. The 744-keV, the 1210-keV, and the 1460-keV transitions were found to be in coincidence with the one at 927 keV. The spectrum coincident with the 927-keV transition showed a further possible transition at 299(35) keV, which was obscured by significant atomic background in the singles spectrum. This transition might correspond to a peak previously reported at 273(5) keV that could not be assigned to 66Se unambiguously. Based on a comparison of the experimental data to theoretical calculations, four new excited states are proposed which suggest that 66Se exhibits shape coexistence.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: GigaScience. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 2047-217X. ; 6:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The mycalesine butterfly Bicyclus anynana, the Squinting bush brown, is a model organism in the study of lepidopteran ecology, development, and evolution. Here, we present a draft genome sequence for B. anynana to serve as a genomics resource for current and future studies of this important model species. Seven libraries with insert sizes ranging from 350 bp to 20 kb were constructed using DNA from an inbred female and sequenced using both Illumina and PacBio technology; 128 Gb of raw Illumina data was filtered to 124 Gb and assembled to a final size of 475 Mb (similar to x260 assembly coverage). Contigs were scaffolded using mate-pair, transcriptome, and PacBio data into 10 800 sequences with an N50 of 638 kb (longest scaffold 5 Mb). The genome is comprised of 26% repetitive elements and encodes a total of 22 642 predicted protein-coding genes. Recovery of a BUSCO set of core metazoan genes was almost complete (98%). Overall, these metrics compare well with other recently published lepidopteran genomes. We report a high-quality draft genome sequence for Bicyclus anynana. The genome assembly and annotated gene models are available at LepBase (http://ensembl.lepbase.org/index.html).

  • Measuring independent yields of fission products using a penning trap
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of the Russian Academy of Sciences: Physics. - 1062-8738. ; 79:7, s. 869-871
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new method for determining independent fission products is used in an experiment at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä. The method combines the chemical universality of the ion guide technique and the unique properties of the Penning trap. A beam of charged particles is formed by stopping fission products in gaseous helium. The Penning trap is employed as a highly accurate filter to identify particles by their mass. The yields of fission products are determined by the ion count downstream of the trap. The setup’s mass resolving power is on the order of 105 with a radio frequency excitation time of 400 ms. Such high mass resolution occasionally allows us not only to separate nuclides but to separate the isomeric and ground states of nuclei as well. Independent yields of fission products are measured in the fission reaction of the 232Th isotope by protons with an energy of 25 MeV. A short description of the method ae nd soexperimental data are supplememnted by the results fro theoretical calculations.

  • Long-term use of benzodiazepines: Definitions, prevalence and usage patterns - a systematic review of register-based studies
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: European psychiatry : the journal of the Association of European Psychiatrists. - : Cambridge University Press (CUP). - 1778-3585. ; 30:8, s. 1037-1047
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundNumerous treatment guidelines recommend that long-term use of benzodiazepines (BZD) should be avoided primarily due to development of tolerance and a risk for BZD dependence. Despite this, long-term BZD use remains a controversial subject in clinical patient care with “for and against” debates. However, there is no explicit understanding of what is meant by long-term BZD use in real world. The aim of this study was to assess different definitions, usage patterns, prevalence and other characteristics of long-term BZD use based on published register-based studies. Synthesis of these characteristics is essential to derive a meaningful definition of long-term BZD.MethodsSystematic review of register-based studies on long-term BZD use published in 1994–2014.ResultsFourty-one studies met our predetermined inclusion criteria. The length of BZD use defined as “long-term” varied in these studies ranging from one month to several years. The most common definition was six months or longer during a year. The prevalence of long-term BZD use in the general population was estimated to be about 3%. The relative proportion of long-term BZD users (all definitions) in adult BZD users ranged from 6% to 76% (mean 24%; 95% CL 13–36%). The estimates were higher in studies only on the elderly (47%; 95% CL 31–64%). Long-term use involved typically steady treatment with low BZD doses. However, in elderly patients long-term BZD use and exceeding recommended doses was relatively common. Several characteristics associated with long-term use were found.ConclusionsLong-term BZD use is common and a clinical reality. Uniform definitions for “long-term”, which is in line with population-based evidence, is needed to have more comparable results between studies. Our systematic review suggests that duration of BZD treatment over six months, the most common definition for long-term BZD use in the included studies. As also recommended previously, it is a useful starting point for further analyses on disadvantages but also potential advantages associated with long-term BZD use.

  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Optical Society of America a-Optics Image Science and Vision. - 1084-7529. ; 22:1, s. 103-108
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A theory of open laser resonators is formulated within the framework of the electromagnetic coherence theory. It is shown that if only one Fox-Li mode contributes to the field at a given frequency. then the field at that frequency is necessarily completely coherent in view of the space- frequency, counterpart of the recently introduced degree of coherence of electromagnetic fields [Opt. Express 11, 1137 (2003)]. It is also shown that the relation between the number of Fox-Li modes and the new degree of coherence is analogous to the relation established in the scalar theory of laser resonator modes. Difficulties that arise with the formerly introduced visibility-based definition of the electromagnetic degree of coherence are briefly discussed.

    • Dispersal is a central life history trait that affects the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of populations and communities. The recent use of experimental evolution for the study of dispersal is a promising avenue for demonstrating valuable proofs of concept, bringing insight into alternative dispersal strategies and trade-offs, and testing the repeatability of evolutionary outcomes. Practical constraints restrict experimental evolution studies of dispersal to a set of typically small, short-lived organisms reared in artificial laboratory conditions. Here, we argue that despite these restrictions, inferences from these studies can reinforce links between theoretical predictions and empirical observations and advance our understanding of the eco-evolutionary consequences of dispersal. We illustrate how applying an integrative framework of theory, experimental evolution and natural systems can improve our understanding of dispersal evolution under more complex and realistic biological scenarios, such as the role of biotic interactions and complex dispersal syndromes.

    • The combustion dynamics of coal, wood chips and their mixture is investigated. Load change capability and the effect of the individual control variables, for example the mixture ratio of different fuels, on pilot-scale CFB boiler dynamics were also studied. Disturbances in fuel feeding cause fluctuations in the flue gas concentrations. Changes in the heating value are possible due to varying moisture content of the fuel. Both these disturbances affect the instantaneous firing rate in a boiler. Also the characteristics of the fuels have to be taken into consideration when designing boiler control systems. When co-firing two fuels with clearly distinct combustion characteristics, direct assumptions based on each fuel's characteristies cannot be made about combustion behaviour of their mixture. Combustion experiments with coal and wood chips and their co-firing were carried out in a pilot-scale CFB reactor (VTT) and a large-scale CFB boiler (Chalmers). A comparison of the combustion in the two different size reactors, provides information about scaling. The combustion responses due to changes in the fuel feeding of the two circulating fluidized beds are analyzed by a dynamic model. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Strong phenotypic plasticity limits potential for evolutionary responses to climate change
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Phenotypic plasticity, the expression of multiple phenotypes from one genome, is a wide-spread adaptation to short-term environmental fluctuations, but whether it facilitates evolutionary adaptation to climate change remains contentious. Here, we investigate seasonal plasticity and adaptive potential in an Afrotropical butterfly expressing distinct phenotypes in dry and wet seasons. We assess the transcriptional architecture of plasticity in a full-factorial analysis of heritable and environmental effects across 72 individuals, and reveal pervasive gene expression differences between the seasonal phenotypes. Strikingly, intra-population genetic variation for plasticity is largely absent, consistent with specialisation to a particular environmental cue reliably predicting seasonal transitions. Under climate change, deteriorating accuracy of predictive cues will likely aggravate maladaptive phenotype-environment mismatches and increase selective pressures on reaction norms. However, the observed paucity of genetic variation for plasticity limits evolutionary responses, potentially weakening prospects for population persistence. Thus, seasonally plastic species may be especially vulnerable to climate change.

    • This chapter formulates different definitions of propagation invariance by means of classical, scalar second-order coherence theory of optical fields, and studies the formal consequences of these definitions in a systematic way. It recalls some basic concepts and key results in second-order coherence theory of nonstationary light. The chapter then introduces different definitions of the notion of propagation invariance of scalar fields, and derives the consequent general solutions. It proposes a graphical classification of such solutions in terms of their second-order correlations. The chapter then considers the special class of spectrally incoherent, or statistically stationary, solutions. It examines several specific nonstationary solutions. The chapter then discusses the vectorial extension of the results, and presents some concluding remarks. Controlled Vocabulary Terms: acoustic propagation; Bragg gratings; laser theory

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Biological Reviews. - : Wiley. - 1464-7931 .- 1469-185X. ; 93:1, s. 574-599
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dispersal is a process of central importance for the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of populations and communities, because of its diverse consequences for gene flow and demography. It is subject to evolutionary change, which begs the question, what is the genetic basis of this potentially complex trait? To address this question, we (i) review the empirical literature on the genetic basis of dispersal, (ii) explore how theoretical investigations of the evolution of dispersal have represented the genetics of dispersal, and (iii) discuss how the genetic basis of dispersal influences theoretical predictions of the evolution of dispersal and potential consequences. Dispersal has a detectable genetic basis in many organisms, from bacteria to plants and animals. Generally, there is evidence for significant genetic variation for dispersal or dispersal-related phenotypes or evidence for the micro-evolution of dispersal in natural populations. Dispersal is typically the outcome of several interacting traits, and this complexity is reflected in its genetic architecture: while some genes of moderate to large effect can influence certain aspects of dispersal, dispersal traits are typically polygenic. Correlations among dispersal traits as well as between dispersal traits and other traits under selection are common, and the genetic basis of dispersal can be highly environment-dependent. By contrast, models have historically considered a highly simplified genetic architecture of dispersal. It is only recently that models have started to consider multiple loci influencing dispersal, as well as non-additive effects such as dominance and epistasis, showing that the genetic basis of dispersal can influence evolutionary rates and outcomes, especially under non-equilibrium conditions. For example, the number of loci controlling dispersal can influence projected rates of dispersal evolution during range shifts and corresponding demographic impacts. Incorporating more realism in the genetic architecture of dispersal is thus necessary to enable models to move beyond the purely theoretical towards making more useful predictions of evolutionary and ecological dynamics under current and future environmental conditions. To inform these advances, empirical studies need to answer outstanding questions concerning whether specific genes underlie dispersal variation, the genetic architecture of context-dependent dispersal phenotypes and behaviours, and correlations among dispersal and other traits.

    • When plants establish outside their native range, their ability to adapt to the new environment is influenced by both demography and dispersal. However, the relative importance of these two factors is poorly understood. To quantify the influence of demography and dispersal on patterns of genetic diversity underlying adaptation, we used data from a globally distributed demographic research network comprising 35 native and 18 nonnative populations of Plantago lanceolata. Species-specific simulation experiments showed that dispersal would dilute demographic influences on genetic diversity at local scales. Populations in the native European range had strong spatial genetic structure associated with geographic distance and precipitation seasonality. In contrast, nonnative populations had weaker spatial genetic structure that was not associated with environmental gradients but with higher within-population genetic diversity. Our findings show that dispersal caused by repeated, long-distance, human-mediated introductions has allowed invasive plant populations to overcome environmental constraints on genetic diversity, even without strong demographic changes. The impact of invasive plants may, therefore, increase with repeated introductions, highlighting the need to constrain future introductions of species even if they already exist in an area.

    • Background: The Glanville fritillary (Melitaea cinxia) butterfly is a model system for metapopulation dynamics research in fragmented landscapes. Here, we provide a chromosome-level assembly of the butterfly's genome produced from Pacific Biosciences sequencing of a pool of males, combined with a linkage map from population crosses. Results: The final assembly size of 484 Mb is an increase of 94 Mb on the previously published genome. Estimation of the completeness of the genome with BUSCO indicates that the genome contains 92-94% of the BUSCO genes in complete and single copies. We predicted 14,810 genes using the MAKER pipeline and manually curated 1,232 of these gene models. Conclusions: The genome and its annotated gene models are a valuable resource for future comparative genomics, molecular biology, transcriptome, and genetics studies on this species.
