  • Framework of Packaging Logistics activities in retail supply chains
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Where theoy meets practice. Proceedings 12th Annual IPSERA Conference, 14-16 April, Budapest Hungary. ; , s. 121-136
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concept of packaging logistics focuses on the synergies achieved by integrating logistics and packaging systems with the potential of increased supply chain efficiency and effectiveness, through the improvement of packaging and logistics related activities. The retail supply chain is a major consumer of different types of packaging. In Sweden alone, retailers handle approximately 1000 million retail packs each year. Such numbers indicate that significant savings might be possible by improving packaging logistics in the retail supply chain. Four case studies involving retail supply chains were conducted to map and describe the packaging logistics processes within these retail supply chains. The case studies were used as a basis to identify and understand value-added packaging logistics activities. This paper presents a framework that describes the packaging logistics activities of the retail supply chain. The interface between the packaging and logistics systems is described and analysed. The paper also demonstrates how mapping the packaging logistics processes can facilitate an increased awareness of value adding activities and thus help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of retail supply chains.

  • Packaging and logistics interactions in retail supply chains
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Packaging Technology & Science. - : Wiley. - 0894-3214 .- 1099-1522. ; 20:3, s. 197-216
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The impact of the packaging system on logistics processes along the supply chain is often implicitly and fragmentally recognized. In order to increase understanding of the impact of packaging on logistics, this paper provides a comprehensive overview of the interactions between the packaging system and logistics processes in the retail supply chain. Four case studies involving Swedish and Dutch retail supply chains were conducted to identify, describe and understand in depth the logistics activities related to packaging within these retail supply chains. The comprehensive overview provided in this paper serves as an elementary step towards understanding the role of packaging systems in logistics, which is a prerequisite for taking packaging and logistics decisions based on a supply chain perspective. Moreover, the paper provides a process-orientated description of what a packaging system must fulfil and perform along the retail supply chain. It also provides a means for evaluating packaging systems, with emphasis on logistics aspects. The interactions between the packaging system and the logistics processes identified in this research can be used to bridge the gap between logisticians and packaging engineers/designers/technicians/managers by enabling them to engage in a dialogue and understand where and how packaging and logistics decisions can impact the performance of packaging system and logistics processes in the retail supply chain. • A platform for Packaging Logistics Development: a systems approach
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Packaging Logistics is a concept that recognises the need for coordination of the packaging system and its manifold functions throughout a package’s life cycle. Packaging Logistics is an area in need for substantial theoretical building. This dissertation elaborates on its underpinnings and suggests conceptual models that should be useful in better understanding the core of the concept, its underestimated potential and in showing its influence on operational as well as strategic decisions in supply chains. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the influence of Packaging Logistics on the efficiency and effectiveness of the supply chain and to contribute to establishing the needed platform for further Packaging Logistics development. Ultimately, this research aims at providing means of better competitiveness through better awareness of the packaging issues in industry. Based on in-depth data and results from case studies, a literature review and a survey were deployed to further link the data and strengthen the foundations of the theoretical contributions of this research. The theoretical framework of this dissertation is based on systems thinking and the multidisciplinary nature of the technically based area of packaging. The systems approach is used to challenge the functionally limited way of managing the packaging issues and to expand the packaging perspectives from a single firm to a supply chain context. This research shows that Packaging Logistics is involved in most of the critical processes from the producer to the point of sale and represents the single most important interface between the products and the logistics system. Packaging Logistics can thus be used as a vehicle for enhancing operational efficiency as well as strategic effectiveness. It was shown that the Packaging issues are affected by functional considerations that are demonstrated in evident trade-offs between logistics and marketing when packaging is chosen. Applying a systems approach on Packaging Logistics facilitated a better comprehension of the complexity of the system and resulted in a number of conceptual models and matrices that may help in the learning process which is necessary to build Packaging Logistics theories and establish a platform for Packaging Logistics. As a start, this research suggests a number of models and procedures that can make expected benefits happen.

  • Introducing the Concept of Design for Packaging Logistics
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: [Host publication title missing].
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Product design, packaging and logistics have a significant impact on the efficiency and effectiveness of supply chains. The packaging design is usually limited by the product characteristics hence influencing possible logistical solutions. A need has been recognized to consider packaging and logistical issues early in the product development process. Case studies involving companies from the Swedish industry has been conducted to explore how packaging and logistics issues are considered in the product development process. The implications for the supply chain are described and analyzed. The paper aims at providing a first attempt to introduce a concept based on DFX methods and the packaging logistics approach.

  • Packaging handling evaluation methods in the grocery retail industry
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Packaging Technology and Science. - : Wiley. - 0894-3214. ; 14:1, s. 21-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The grocery retail industry, with its large product volumes, low margins and fierce competition, is constantly seeking efficiency improvements in its supply chain. The grocery retail industry uses an immense amount of packaging and is directly affected by packaging logistics activities. There is, therefore, a potential for efficiency improvements in the grocery retail supply chain through the integration and development of new systems of packaging and logistics. Packaging handling is identified as one of the main activities that has a strong impact on the overall logistical cost of a grocery chain. This research article investigates packaging handling evaluation methods and discusses how these are employed to benefit the industry. Case studies, involving six major companies from the Swedish grocery retail industry, have been used to evaluate packaging and logistics activities. This work, together with a literature review, was used to identify the need for evaluative methods and the present availability of such methods. The results indicated a lack of sufficient and usable packaging handling evaluation methods in today's grocery and packaging industry especially from a logistical point of view. The paper also highlights the lack of systematization among the few methods used and discusses how these can be used to build a systematic and multifunctional evaluation model in order to utilize the information from different studies to build a knowledge base for the future.

  • Packaging information needed for evaluation in the supply chain: The case of the Swedish grocery retail industry
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Packaging Technology & Science. - : Wiley. - 0894-3214 .- 1099-1522. ; 15:1, s. 37-46
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The proper use and exchange of the right packaging-related information in a grocery supply chain is critical to achieve an efficient and responsive packaging logistics system. The use of well-defined packaging-related information that is available for all actors in the supply chain also facilitates an integrated and supply chain-orientated packaging development. The objective of this paper is to describe and identify the packaging-related information used in the grocery retail industry. The paper also describes and analyses how the information is used in the supply chain, with focus on the packaging evaluation process. Case and field studies involving six companies from the Swedish grocery industry were conducted to identify the parameters used and shared among them. The paper discusses what kind of information is required to properly evaluate a packaging concept, what parameters are missing and how the information should be used in the supply chain. Finally, the paper suggests a procedure for packaging logistics performance with required parameters. Copyright (C) 2002 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

  • Packaging Logistics Evaluation in the Swedish Retail Supply Chain
  • 2002
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The concept of packaging logistics focuses on the integration of the systems of logistics and packaging with the potential of increased supply chain efficiency and effectiveness, through the improvement of both packaging and logistics related activities. Retail companies, with large product volumes, low margins and fierce competition, are constantly seeking efficiency improvements in their supply chains. The retail supply chain uses an immense amount of packaging and is directly affected by packaging logistics activities. There is, therefore, a potential for efficiency improvements in the retail supply chain through the integration and development of new systems of packaging and logistics. The objective of this thesis was to develop a conceptual model that facilitates the analysis of packaging logistics performance in the retail supply chain, a model that can help decision makers in their choice of different packaging concepts with consideration of the retail supply chain. The thesis was conducted as a research project in collaboration with six Swedish companies representing a packaging company (Tetra Pak), two food manufacturers (CloettaFazer and Procordia Food), a transport company (Schenker-BTL) and two of Sweden’s largest retail chains (ICA and KF). Tools such as process mapping and video recording were used to map packaging related activities along the observed supply chain and to collect related data. The thesis provides a definition of Packaging Logistics, and elaborates on perspectives to improvement when adopting the concept of packaging logistics. The concept of Packaging logistics needs to build up knowledge and theories that can cast light on its influence on the performance of logistics and packaging systems. The thesis suggests some ideas, procedures and conceptual models that can facilitate further development of the concept.

  • The Concept of Packaging Logistics
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: [Host publication title missing].
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Packaging has a significant impact on the efficiency and effectiveness of retail supply chains, where improvements can be achieved through the adaptation and development of the concept of packaging logistics. In order to enable these improvements, models are needed that facilitate evaluations along the supply chain and show the activities involved in the packaging logistics process. The knowledge and awareness of the importance and potential of the packaging logistics activities along the supply chain is low. Case studies involving companies from the Swedish and the Dutch retail industry were conducted to identify packaging logistics parameters along the retail supply chain. The concept of packaging logistics is explained, and the paper discusses how a systematic evaluation model from a packaging logistics perspective should look like. Finally, a conceptual analysis model for packaging logistics is presented.
