  • An Industrial Survey on Software Process Practices, Preferences and Methods
  • 2009
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This report presents the questionnaire questions and responses of a web-based survey conducted during early spring 2009. It was intended to survey current processes, practices, and methods in the software industry. The report contains no analysis of the data, but is intended to be a reference for other publications, both by ourselves, but by making the data publicly available, also by others.

  • Redefining the role of testers in organisational transition to agile methodologies
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Conference on Software, Services & Semantic Technologies (S3T). - Sofia, Bulgaria.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many challenges confront companies when they change their current software development process to an agile development methodology. Those challenges could be rather difficult but one that requires considerable attention is the integration of testing with development. This is because in heavyweight processes, as in the traditional waterfall approach, testing is a phase often conducted by testers as part of a quality assurance team towards the end of the development cycle whereas in the agile methodology testing is part of a continuous development activity with no specific “tester” role defined. In this paper we consider several options for testers when an organisation transit to agile methodology, and propose a new project mentor role for them. This role aims to utilize the knowledge that testers already have in both the business domain and the development technology together with their expertise in quality practices. This role will enhance the stature of testers as well as enable the company to effectively deploy the testers in the new environment. Motivations and benefits for this role are presented in this paper together with our plan for evaluation of this proposal.

  • Being Agile when Developing Software Components and Component-Based Systems – Experiences from Industry
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: EuroSPI. - Madrid, Spain.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Building software from components has some potential benefits in terms of reusing proven solutions and reducing time-to-market. However, component-based paradigm is sometimes in conflict with certain agile principles and practices, such as being responsive to change. This paper presents the results of a web-based survey investigating how industry today tries to manage these challenges. Based on the same data we also describe the preferences of industry professionals for improving development processes in their projects by introducing certain practices. A quantitative analysis using paired-samples t-tests has shown significant differences between current practices and process preferences for both component developers and component users, and the conclusion is that practitioners in general want less rigidity than in their respective currently performed practices.

  • Will They Report It? Ethical Attitude of Graduate Software Engineers in Reporting Bad News
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: 25th IEEE Conference on Software Engineering Eduaction and Training. - 9781467315920 ; , s. 42-51
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hiding critical information has resulted in disastrous failures of some major software projects. This paper investigates, using a subset of Keil’s test, how graduates (70% of them with work experience) from different cultural backgrounds who are enrolled in a postgraduate course on global software development would handle negative information that is critical in a project. The subjects were mainly from Europe and Asia. The results showed that the subjects are highly likely to report critical information to their immediate supervisors (t(36)=-11, p<0.0005), but are undecided on whether they would take the matter further up the organisational hierarchy if the supervisor ignored their report. There was no significant difference between participants of different regions, or between those with and without work experience. The consequences of negative information not reaching the level where remedial actions can be taken could be serious in software projects. The results of this experiment point to the need to incorporate in software engineering curriculum the teaching of the ethical responsibility of effective communication of bad news.
