  • Menopausal hormone therapy and colorectal cancer: a linkage between nationwide registries in Norway

    • With the present study, we aimed to investigate the association between menopausal hormone therapy (HT) and risk of colorectal cancer (CRC).SettingCohort study based on the linkage of Norwegian population-based registries.ParticipantsWe selected 466822 Norwegian women, aged 55–79, alive and residing in Norway as of 1 January 2004, and we followed them from 2004 to 2008. Each woman contributed person-years at risk as non-user, current user and/or past HT user.Outcome measuresThe outcome of interest was adenocarcinoma of the colorectal tract, overall, by anatomic site and stage at diagnosis. Incidence rate ratios (RRs) with 95% CIs were estimated by Poisson regression and were used to evaluate the association between HT and CRC incidence.ResultsDuring the median follow-up of 4.8 years, 138 655 (30%) women received HT and 3799 (0.8%) incident CRCs occurred. Current, but not past, use of HT was associated with a lower risk of CRC (RR 0.88; 95% CI 0.80 to 0.98). RRs for localised, regionally advanced and metastatic CRC were 1.13 (95% CI 0.91 to 1.41), 0.81 (95% CI 0.70 to 0.94) and 0.79 (95% CI 0.62 to 1.00), respectively. RRs for current use of oestrogen therapy (ET) were 0.91 (95% CI 0.80 to 1.04) while RR for current use of combined oestrogen–progestin therapy (EPT) was 0.85 (95% CI 0.70 to 1.03), as compared with no use of HT. The same figures for ET and EPT in oral formulations were 0.83 (95% CI 0.68 to 1.03) and 0.86 (95% CI 0.71 to 1.05), respectively.ConclusionsIn our nationwide cohort study, HT use lowered the risk of CRC, specifically the most advanced CRC.

    • Iron(III) photoreduction and the responses of phytoplankton under ultraviolet (UV) and photosynthetically available radiation (PAR) were investigated with the presence of hydroxycarboxylic acid (glucaric acid (GA), a model compound for organic acids excreted by phytoplankton). The incubation experiments were carried out on board using seawater samples collected in the location of the winter ice edge (WIE) and the spring ice edge (SIE) of the Southern Ocean. In this paper, we focus on the results of experiment in WIE. Throughout the experiments, dissolved Fe(II), major nutrients and in vivo fluorescence were monitored regularly. In addition, Chl-a, POC/PON, cell densities of phytoplankton and bacteria, bacterial production, organic peroxide, hydrogen peroxide and total CO2 were measured. The results from the WIE show that iron enrichment had a substantial effect on phytoplankton growth rate. Fe(III) addition in the presence of GA (FeGA) gave higher Fe(II) concentration and higher growth rate of phytoplankton than those in controls. Our results suggest that hydroxycarboxylic acid had a significant chemical and biological impact. The presence of GA influenced iron photochemistry and iron availability to phytoplankton. Phytoplankton growth responses to iron enrichments in incubations under UV and PAR were completely dissimilar. It seems that FeGA addition prominently changes the harmful effect of UV on the phytoplankton population. This study provides preliminary information on how the photoreduction of iron(III) and the phytoplankton growth are affected by iron enrichment in the presence of hydroxycarboxylic acid. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd.     • Four marine dinoflagellates, Amphidinium carterae Hulburt, Ceratium tripos (O.F. Müll.) Nitzsch, Prorocentrum minimum (Pav.) J. Schiller, and Scrippsiella trochoidea (Stein) Loeblich III were grown as dilution cultures at 18°C, S = 29%. and 30 μE·m−2·s−1 at L:D = 14:10 h. In nutrient-saturated cultures, the growth rates (doubl·day−1) ranged from 0.38 for Scrippsiella to 0.80 for Prorocentrum, and carbon content (pg·cell−1) from 83 for Amphidinium to 6900 for Ceratium. The atomic N/C ratio was 0.13–0.15, but for Ceratium it was 0.088, because of its thick, cellulose theca. The atomic N/P ratio ranged from 12–13 for Ceratium and Scrippsiella to 15–17 for Prorocentrum and Amphidinium. Under P-deficient conditions (growth rate 39–70% of the maximum), cellular P decreased considerably, but so did N, so that the N/P ratio was only slightly affected. There was a concomitant increase in carbon content per cell of 1.2- to 1.7-fold. Alkaline phosphatase activity was virtually nil in nutrient-saturated cells, but was readily demonstrable in all species when P-deficient.
