  • Characterization of attosecond pulse trains
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Ultrafast Optics V. - New York, NY : Springer New York. - 1556-1534 .- 0342-4111. - 9780387491172 ; 132, s. 45-56
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ultrashort light pulses, as short as 100 as, can be produced from high harmonic generation (HHG) in an atomic gas medium. This major achievement of the last 6 years in high field physics has now been demonstrated in different conditions of medium-field interaction [1].

  • Reconstruction of attosecond pulse trains using an adiabatic phase expansion
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 95:24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We propose a new method to reconstruct the electric field of attosecond pulse trains. The phase of the high-order harmonic emission electric field is Taylor expanded around the maximum of the laser pulse envelope in the time domain and around the central harmonic in the frequency domain. Experimental measurements allow us to determine the coefficients of this expansion and to characterize the radiation with attosecond accuracy over a femtosecond time scale. The method gives access to pulse-to-pulse variations along the train, including the timing, the chirp, and the attosecond carrier envelope phase.

  • XUV interferometry using high-order harmonics: Application to plasma diagnostics
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Laser and Particle Beams. - 0263-0346. ; 19:1, s. 35-40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we present and compare the two different XUV interferometric techniques using high-order harmonics that have been developed so far. The first scheme is based on the interference between two spatially separated phase-locked harmonic sources while the second uses two temporally separated harmonic sources. These techniques have been applied to plasma diagnostics in feasibility experiments where electron densities up to a few 1020 e[minus sign/cm3 have been measured with a temporal resolution of 200 fs. We present the main characteristics of each technique and discuss their respective potentials and limitations.

  • Extreme ultraviolet fourier-transform spectroscopy with high order harmonics
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 95:22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate a new scheme for extreme ultraviolet (xuv) Fourier-transform spectroscopy based on the generation of two phase-locked high-harmonic beams. It allows us to measure for the first time interferograms at wavelengths as short as 90 nm, and open the perspective of performing high-resolution Fourier-transform absorption spectroscopy in the xuv. Our measurements also demonstrate that a precise control of the relative phase of harmonic pulses can be obtained with an accuracy on an attosecond time scale, of importance for future xuv pump-xuv probe attosecond spectroscopy.

  • High-order Harmonics - A Coherent Source In the Xuv Range
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nonlinear Optical Physics & Materials. - 0218-1991. ; 4:3, s. 647-665
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We review the main results concerning high-order generation processes from the point of view of a potential user of this new source of XUV radiation. The perspectives for optimizing the source, both in efficiency and in spectral range, its characteristics and in particular, its coherence properties, are discussed. Finally, we describe two experiments, which demonstrate the usefulness of the harmonics as a short-pulse, coherent source in the XUV domain.

  • Generation of attosecond pulses in molecular nitrogen
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal D. Atomic, Molecular, Optical and Plasma Physics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6060. ; 40:2, s. 305-311
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have generated attosecond pulse trains in an ensemble of randomly aligned nitrogen molecules. Measurements of the high-order harmonic relative phases and amplitudes allow us to reconstruct the temporal profile of the attosecond pulses. We show that in the considered spectral range, the latter is very similar to the pulse train generated in argon under the same conditions. We discuss the possible influence of the molecular structure in the generation process, and how it can induce subtle differences on the relative phases.

  • Generation of attosecond pulses in macroscopic media
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A (Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics). - 1050-2947. ; 56:6, s. 4960-4969
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We describe theoretically the generation of ultrashort (subfemtosecond) pulses using high-order harmonics of a laser pulse with a time-dependent degree of ellipticity. The single-atom response is calculated by using a low-frequency strong-field approximation. Propagation effects are taken into account using a method going beyond the slowly varying envelope approximation. Propagation modifies significantly the results obtained in the single-atom response and, in certain conditions, makes the generation of one attosecond pulse possible. We discuss prospects for the observation of these ultrashort pulses. [S1050-2947(97)09411-0].

  • Theory of high-order harmonic generation by an elliptically polarized laser field
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A (Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics). - 1050-2947. ; 53:3, s. 1725-1745
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We generalize a recently formulated theory of high-order harmonic generation by low-frequency laser fields [Anne L'Huillier et al., Phys. Rev. A 48, R3433 (1993)] to the case of an elliptically polarized light. Our theoretical description includes both the single-atom response and propagation. Phase matching significantly modifies the results obtained in the single-atom response. The results of our calculations, including propagation for both the intensity and polarization properties of harmonics as a function of laser ellipticity, compare very well with recent experimental observations.

  • Attosecond electron wave packet dynamics in strong laser fields
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 95:1, s. 1-013001
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We use a train of sub-200 attosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulses with energies just above the ionization threshold in argon to create a train of temporally localized electron wave packets. We study the energy transfer from a strong infrared (IR) laser field to the ionized electrons as a function of the delay between the XUV and IR fields. When the wave packets are born at the zero crossings of the IR field, a significant amount of energy (similar to 20 eV) is transferred from the field to the electrons. This results in dramatically enhanced above-threshold ionization in conditions where the IR field alone does not induce any significant ionization. Because both the energy and duration of the wave packets can be varied independently of the IR laser, they are valuable tools for studying and controlling strong-field processes.

  • High-order Harmonic-generation Cutoff
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A (Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics). - 1050-2947. ; 48:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have experimentally determined the harmonic-generation cutoff as a function of the laser intensity in neon using an intense, short-pulse Ti:sapphire laser. The experimental cutoff is lower than that obtained in single-atom calculations. Using a simple quantum-mechanical approach to harmonic generation valid at high intensity, we show that the difference is due to the effect of propagation.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Modern Optics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0950-0340 .- 1362-3044. ; 52:2-3, s. 379-394
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the phase of the atomic polarization in the process of high-order harmonic generation. Its dependence on the laser intensity and the harmonic order induce a frequency variation in time (chirp) respectively of the harmonic pulses and attosecond pulses. We review the recent experimental results on the temporal characterization of the harmonic emission and show that measurements performed using very different techniques (like XFROG and RABITT), probing the phase in different parameter spaces, can be connected through the mixed phase derivatives, demonstrating the common underlying physics

  • High-order Harmonic-generation In Rare-gases With An Intense Short-pulse Laser
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A (Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics). - 1050-2947. ; 48:6, s. 4709-4720
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present experimental studies of high-order harmonic generation in the rare gases performed with a short-pulse titanium sapphire laser operating at 794 nm in the 10(14)-10(15) W/cm2 range. The harmonic yields generated in neon and in argon are studied for all orders as a function of the laser intensity. They vary first rather steeply, in the cutoff region, then much more slowly in the plateau region, and, finally, they saturate when the medium gets ionized. The dependence of the high-order harmonic cutoff with the laser intensity in neon and argon is found to be lower than that predicted in single-atom theories. We observe high-order harmonics in argon and xenon (up to the 65th and 45th, respectively) at 10(15) W/cm2, which we attribute to harmonic generation from ions. We also show how the harmonic and fundamental spectra get blueshifted when the medium becomes ionized.

  • Attosecond photoionization dynamics in the vicinity of the Cooper minima in argon
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Research. - 2643-1564. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using a spectrally resolved electron interferometry technique, we measure photoionization time delays between the 3s and 3p subshells of argon over a large 34-eV energy range covering the Cooper minima in both subshells. The observed strong variations of the 3s−3p delay difference, including a sign change, are well reproduced by theoretical calculations using the two-photon two-color random-phase approximation with exchange. Strong shake-up channels lead to photoelectrons spectrally overlapping with those emitted from the 3s subshell. These channels need to be included in our analysis to reproduce the experimental data. Our measurements provide a benchmark for multielectronic theoretical models aiming at an accurate description of interchannel correlation.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal D. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6060 .- 1434-6079. ; 76:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract: Quantum coherence plays a fundamental role in the study and control of ultrafast dynamics in matter. In the case of photoionization, entanglement of the photoelectron with the ion is a well-known source of decoherence when only one of the particles is measured. Here, we investigate decoherence due to entanglement of the radial and angular degrees of freedom of the photoelectron. We study two-photon ionization via the 2s2p autoionizing state in He using high spectral resolution photoelectron interferometry. Combining experiment and theory, we show that the strong dipole coupling of the 2s2p and 2p2 states results in the entanglement of the angular and radial degrees of freedom. This translates, in angle-integrated measurements, into a dynamic loss of coherence during autoionization. Graphic Abstract: [Figure not available: see fulltext.]. © 2022, The Author(s).

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics B-Atomic Molecular and Optical Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-4075 .- 1361-6455. ; 51:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Autoionization, which results from the interference between direct photoionization and photoexcitation to a discrete state decaying to the continuum by configuration interaction, is a well known example of the important role of electron correlation in light-matter interaction. Information on this process can be obtained by studying the spectral, or equivalently, temporal complex amplitude of the ionized electron wave packet. Using an energy-resolved interferometric technique, we measure the spectral amplitude and phase of autoionized wave packets emitted via the sp2+ and sp3(+) resonances in helium. These measurements allow us to reconstruct the corresponding temporal profiles by Fourier transform. In addition, applying various time-frequency representations, we observe the build-up of the wave packets in the continuum, monitor the instantaneous frequencies emitted at any time and disentangle the dynamics of the direct and resonant ionization channels.

  • Extreme ultraviolet interferometry measurements with high-order harmonics
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Optics Letters. - 0146-9592. ; 25:2, s. 135-137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate that high-order harmonics generated by short, intense laser pulses in gases provide an interesting radiation source for extreme ultraviolet interferometry, since they are tunable, coherent, of short pulse duration, and simple to manipulate. Harmonics from the 9th to the 15th are used to measure the thickness of an aluminum layer. The 11th harmonic is used to determine the spatial distribution of the electron density of a plasma produced by a 300-ps laser. Electronic densities higher than 2-10(20) electrons/cm(3) are measured. • One of the most ubiquitous techniques within attosecond science is the so-called reconstruction of attosecond beating by interference of two-photon transitions (RABBIT). Originally proposed for the characterization of attosecond pulses, it has been successfully applied to the accurate determination of time delays in photoemission. Here, we examine in detail, using numerical simulations, the effect of the spatial and temporal properties of the light fields and of the experimental procedure on the accuracy of the method. This allows us to identify the necessary conditions to achieve the best temporal precision in RABBIT measurements. This article is part of the theme issue 'Measurement of ultrafast electronic and structural dynamics with X-rays'.

  • Phase of the Atomic Polarization In High-order Harmonic-generation
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A (Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics). - 1050-2947. ; 52:6, s. 4747-4754
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A recently formulated theory of high-order harmonic generation by low-frequency laser fields [Anne L'Huillier et al., Phys. Rev. A 48, R3433 (1993)] allows us to study the phase of the induced atomic dipole moment. We show that this phase exhibits a piecewise-linear dependence on the laser intensity. This dependence can be interpreted in quasiclassical terms, and is related to the action acquired by the electron during its motion in the laser held. The value of the phase, however, is also affected by the quantum effects of tunneling, diffusion, and interference. The phase of the dipole moment considerably influences the conversion efficiency, as well as the coherence properties, of the harmonics generated in macroscopic media.

  • Amplitude and phase control of attosecond light pulses
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 94:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the generation, compression, and delivery on target of ultrashort extreme-ultraviolet light pulses using external amplitude and phase control. Broadband harmonic radiation is first generated by focusing an infrared laser with a carefully chosen intensity into a gas cell containing argon atoms. The emitted light then goes through a hard aperture and a thin aluminum filter that selects a 30-eV bandwidth around a 30-eV photon energy and synchronizes all of the components, thereby enabling the formation of a train of almost Fourier-transform-limited single-cycle 170 attosecond pulses. Our experiment demonstrates a practical method for synthesizing and controlling attosecond waveforms.

  • Ingår i: Laser and Particle Beams. - 0263-0346. ; 18:3, s. 495-502
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present two interferometry schemes in the extreme ultraviolet, based on either the wave-front division of a unique harmonic beam (1st scheme) or two spatially separated, phase-locked harmonic sources (2nd scheme). In the first scheme using a Fresnel bimirror interferometer, we measure the degree of spatial coherence of the 13 th harmonic generated in xenon, as a function of different parameters. A high degree of coherence, larger than 0.5, is found for the best conditions in almost the full section of the beam. Then, we demonstrate that the second scheme can be used for interferometry measurements with an ultrahigh time resolution. The 11th harmonic is used to study the spatial variation of the electron density of a laser-produced plasma. Electronic densities higher than 2.10 20 cm -3 are measured.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-4075. ; 29:20, s. 4771-4786
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a systematic study of the angular distributions of high-order harmonics generated with a femtosecond Cr:LiSrAlF6 laser. We investigate the influence of different parameters, namely laser intensity, nonlinear order, nature of the gas and position of the laser focus relative to the generating medium. We show that when the laser is focused before the atomic medium, harmonics with regular spatial profiles can be generated with reasonable conversion efficiency. Their divergence does not depend directly on the nonlinear order, the intensity or even the nature of the generating gas, but rather on the region of the spectrum the considered harmonic belongs to, which is determined by the combination of the three preceding elements. When the focus is drawn closer to the medium, the distributions get increasingly distorted, becoming annular with a significant divergence for a focus right into-or after-the jet. We perform numerical simulations of the angular distributions. The simulated profiles reproduce remarkably well the experimental trends and are thus used to interpret them.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics B-Atomic Molecular and Optical Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-4075 .- 1361-6455. ; 53:18

    • We apply a spectrally-resolved electron interferometry technique to the measurement of the spectral phase in the vicinity of the 3s(1)3p(6)4p Fano resonance of argon. We show that it allows disentangling the phases of the two nearly-overlapping electron wavepackets corresponding to different spin-orbit final states. Using simple assumptions, it is possible to process the experimental data and numerically isolate each component in a self-consistent manner. This in turn allows reconstructing the autoionization dynamics of the dominant channel.
