  • The role of strategy use in working memory training outcomes

    • Cognitive mechanisms underlying the limited transfer effects of working memory (WM) training remain poorly understood. We tested in detail the Strategy Mediation hypothesis, according to which WM training generates task-specific strategies that facilitate performance on the trained task and its untrained variants. This large-scale pre-registered randomized controlled trial (n = 258) used a 4-week adaptive WM training with a single digit n-back task. Strategy use was probed with open-ended strategy reports. We employed a Strategy training group (n = 73) receiving external strategy instruction, a Traditional training group (n = 118) practicing without strategy instruction, and Passive controls (n = 67). Both training groups showed emerging transfer to untrained n-back task variants already at intermediate test after 3 training sessions, extending to all untrained n-back task variants at posttest after 12 training sessions. The Strategy training group outperformed the Traditional training group only at the beginning of training, indicating short-lived strategy manipulation effects. Importantly, in the Traditional training group, strategy evolvement modulated the gains in the trained and untrained n -back tasks, supporting the Strategy Mediation hypothesis. Our results concur with the view of WM training as cognitive skill learning.

    • A dynamic multi-link MIMO channel indoor measurement campaign at 5.3 GHz is presented in this paper. The system setup is described and capacity with interference (with and without power control) results based on the dynamic multilink MIMO measurements are shown, and we experience a strong correlation between the relative capacity and SIR. Furthermore, an interference suppression metric is introduced and pathloss exponents and delay spreads are also presented, when moving from a typical office corridor to a large entrance hall at the premises of Lund University, Sweden.

    • Abstract in UndeterminedIn this paper, we present and evaluate the performance of a dynamic dual-link wideband multiple-input-multiple-output ( MIMO) channel sounder. The channel sounder can simultaneously measure two wideband dual-polarized links, each with a MIMO matrix size of 30 x 30 and 30 x 32. Multi-link MIMO systems, including multiuser and cooperative MIMO, are essential parts of future high-throughput wireless local area networks and fourth-generation cellular systems. To fully understand such systems, the dynamic characteristics of multilink MIMO channels have to be measured. In this paper, we present a channel sounder that enables such measurements, including double-directional parameter estimation possibility for both links. The presented dual-link MIMO channel sounder does not suffer from the deficiencies of previous "virtual multiuser" measurement systems. Furthermore, system analysis and sample results from a measurement campaign with this channel sounder at 5.3 GHz in an indoor office environment are presented.

    • The options available for processing quantitative data from isotope coded affinity tag (ICAT) experiments have mostly been confined to software specific to the instrument of acquisition. However, recent developments with data format conversion have subsequently increased such processing opportunities. In the present study, data sets from ICAT experiments, analysed with liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), using an Applied Biosystems QSTAR Pulsar quadrupole-TOF mass spectrometer, were processed in triplicate using separate mass spectrometry software packages. The programs Pro ICAT, Spectrum Mill and SEQUEST with XPRESS were employed. Attention was paid towards the extent of common identification and agreement of quantitative results, with additional interest in the flexibility and productivity of these programs. The comparisons were made with data from the analysis of a specifically prepared test mixture, nine proteins at a range of relative concentration ratios from 0.1 to 10 (light to heavy labelled forms), as a known control, and data selected from an ICAT study involving the measurement of cytokine induced protein expression in human lymphoblasts, as an applied example. Dissimilarities were detected in peptide identification that reflected how the associated scoring parameters favoured information from the MS/MS data sets. Accordingly, there were differences in the numbers of peptides and protein identifications, although from these it was apparent that both confirmatory and complementary information was present. In the quantitative results from the three programs, no statistically significant differences were observed.

  • Propagation Characteristics of Dense Multipath Components

    • The dense multipath components (DMC) represent the part of the radio channel that cannot be characterized by a superposition of distinct plane waves, i.e., the specular components (SC). In this letter, the propagation characteristics of the DMC are analyzed in indoor environments from two perspectives. First, the proportion of DMC in the total power is studied as a function of the distance between the transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX). Second, the characteristics of the DMC and SC are compared in angular and delay domains. The measurement results show that the amount of DMC in the total power increases as the TX-RX distance increases in both line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) scenarios. In addition, it is shown that the power of the DMC is concentrated around the same angles and delays as the SC.

    • Correlation between different links is an essential characteristic for many of the forthcoming radio communication systems that utilize the multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) technology. This paper investigates the physical phenomena that cause the inter-link correlation by introducing a measure to quantify how large amount of energy propagates via similar propagation mechanisms in different links. The conditions for the so-called significance of common scatterers are derived and two dynamic dual-link indoor MIMO channel measurements are used to provide experimental results. The present work forms the indispensable basis for the channel modeling of multiuser MIMO communications.

  • The Pursuit of Effective Working Memory Training : a Pre-registered Randomised Controlled Trial with a Novel Varied Training Protocol

    • Working memory (WM) training, typically entailing repetitive practice with one or two tasks, has mostly yielded only limited task-specific transfer effects. We developed and tested a new WM training approach where the task paradigm, stimulus type, and predictability of the stimulus sequence were constantly altered during the 4-week training period. We expected that this varied training protocol would generate more extensive transfer by facilitating the use of more general strategies that could be applied to a range of WM tasks. Pre-post transfer effects following varied training (VT group, n = 60) were compared against traditional training (TT group, training a single adaptive WM task, n = 63), and active controls (AC, n = 65). As expected, TT evidenced strong task-specific near transfer as compared to AC. In turn, VT exhibited task-specific near transfer only on one of the measures, and only as compared to the TT group. Critically, no evidence for task-general near transfer or far transfer effects was observed. In sum, the present form of VT failed to demonstrate broader transfer. Nevertheless, as VT has met with success in other cognitive domains, future studies should probe if and how it would be possible to design WM training protocols that promote structural learning where common features of specific tasks would be identified and utilised when selecting strategies for novel memory tasks.
