It is perhaps not surprising that a theory as popular as stakeholder theory should be used in different ways, but when the disparity between different uses becomes too great, it is questionable whether all the 'stakeholder research' refers to the same underlying theory. This paper starts to clarify this definitional confusion by distinguishing between three different ways in which different lines of stakeholder research are connected with descriptive and instrumental stakeholder theory. First, a distinction is made between research connected with descriptive and with instrumental stakeholder theory as defined by Donaldson & Preston in the narrow or broad sense. Second, a distinction is made between research that interprets descriptive and instrumental stakeholder theories as either hypotheses or research areas. Third, a distinction is made between research that interprets Donaldson & Preston's central concept of 'stakeholder management' as either behaviour or rationale. Finally, the paper discusses the implications of these differences for empirical research into stakeholder theory.

This article reviews recent research on the microfinance sector that addresses these ethical issues. We show how this research is relevant to a number of theoretical issues, such as how to define poverty, how to understand exploitation, and how to balance financial and social goals in commercial organizations. We conclude by identifying a critical agenda for future research.

A counter-argument is that beneficiaries' best interests can be interpreted more broadly to also encompass such concerns. We seek to contribute to resolving this controversy by measuring preferences for social responsible investment (SRI) among beneficiaries of pension funds. The data from a survey questionnaire answered by 1119 future beneficiaries of the Swedish pension system show that beneficiaries on average prefer their pension funds to go beyond financial concerns and engage in SRI. Analysing the determinants of the preferences, we find support for a model including both financial motives (beliefs about financial risk and returns) and values-based motives (self-transcendent value priorities). Our results give unique insights into the psychological drivers of beneficiaries' preferences that are highly pertinent to present attempts at rethinking the aims of pension investments.

While these currencies have existed for a long time, both society and academia have shown a renewed interest in their potential to decentralize the governance of monetary affairs and to bring people and organizations together in more ethical or sustainable ways. This article is a review of the ethical and philosophical implications of these alternative monetary projects. We first discuss various classifications of the currencies before analyzing the ethical challenges linked to the way they tackle social and environmental issues. We also examine the incentive-based and coercive mechanisms used by the currencies from an ethical perspective and debate the promises and perils of monetary decentralization and democracy. We conclude by identifying an agenda for future research.

We build on some recent themes in political economy research to give a broader and more balanced perspective than the existing literature, highlighting both the promises and perils of CBDC. We argue that, on the one hand, the present state of the private financial sector is problematic and regulators should seek to tackle the issues of financial power, financial instability and lack of adequate monetary policy options. On the other hand, implementing CBDC comes with risks of its own, such as that of creating a “Frankenstein scenario” where too much power is given to unelected technocrats. Our tentative conclusion is therefore that CBDC should be seen as a second-best option, while the primary focus of policy makers should be on the possibility of financial re-regulation.

This is sometimes defended with an argument from peer comparison; roughly that “our” CEO has to be paid in accordance with what other CEOs at comparable companies get. At first glance this seems like a poor excuse for morally outrageous pay schemes and, consequently, the argument has been ignored in the previous philosophical literature. In contrast, however, this article provides a partial defence of the argument from peer comparison. Moreover, it is demonstrated how a serious consideration of this argument sheds further light on both incentive- and desert-based theories of just pay. © 2020, The Author(s).

Nordic Journal of Applied Ethics. ; 5:1, s. 51-78 Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract As one of the more progressive facets of the socially responsible investment (SRI) movement, shareholder activism is generally recommended or justified on the grounds that it can create social change. But how effective are different kinds of activist campaigns likely to be in this regard? This article outlines the full range of different ways in which shareholder activism could make a difference by carefully going through, first, all the more specific lines of action typically included under the shareholder activism umbrella and, second, all of the different ways in which it has been suggested that these could influence the activities of commercial companies. It is argued that – although much more empirical research is needed in the area – there are at least theoretical reasons for thinking that it will be difficult to influence companies through the standard actions of filing or voting on shareholder resolutions. However, some alternative strategies open to activists may allow them to increase their efficacy. It is specifically argued that even individual investors could be able to push for corporate change through devising a radically self-sacrificial campaign that manages to get the attention of powerful forces outside the corporate sphere.

Whereas conventional or mainstream investment focuses solely upon financial risk and return, ethical investment thus also includes various nonfinancial goals or constraints in typical investment decisions. This type of investment has grown to be a well-established feature of many stock markets in the past two decades or so. A recurring point of debate, however, is to what extent this phenomenon indeed constitutes a more ethical alternative to conventional types of financial behavior.

Not only this but, according to Singer, these findings point to a central flaw in the method (or epistemological theory) of /reflective equilibrium/ used by many contemporary moral philosophers. In this paper, we try to defend reflective equilibrium from Singer’s attack and, in part, we do this by discussing Singer’s own favoured moral methodology as outlined in his /Practical Ethics/. Although basing ethics solely on (certain kinds of) intuitions certainly is problematic, we argue, basing it solely on ‘reason’ gives rise to similar problems. The best solution would arguably be one which could strike a balance between the two—but, we suggest, this is precisely what reflective equilibrium is all about.

Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract Ett intressant fenomen på dagens börser, och i de val av pensionsfonder som många av oss står inför, är förekomsten av s.k. etiska placeringsalternativ – främst olika typer av fonder med uttalad etisk eller miljöinriktad profil. Under det senaste decenniet har intresset för att placera sina pengar i sådana fonder ökat dramatiskt bland allmänheten. Det finns också en utbredd uppfattning, både hos allmänheten samt hos de banker och fondbolag som erbjuder dessa alternativ, att sådana fonder kan anses moraliskt överlägsna ”traditionella” placeringar, eller fonder med strikt finansiella profiler. Försvinnande lite moralfilosofisk debatt har ägnats åt detta fenomen, speciellt i Sverige. Många intressanta moralfilosofiska spörsmål väcks dock i samband med s.k. etiska placeringsstrategier. Jag presenterar först en allmän översikt över området, och vilka olika positioner och argument som är vanliga i den internationella diskussionen. Därefter presenterar och analyserar jag en speciell typ av argument som jag finner särdeles intressant ur ett moralfilosofiskt prespektiv. Detta är olika idéer om det moraliskt problematiska i att tjäna pengar på andras lidande, eller andras moraliskt felaktiga beteende. Hur sådana idéer kan användas för att försvara en viss placeringsstrategi diskuteras, och den moralfilosofiska grunden för idéerna problematiseras.

What generally characterizes the tradition is an interest in matters of ethics and justice concerning the pricing of goods and services on commercial markets. Medieval philosophers were often critical of commerce in general – and commerce with money in particular (see Usury) – viewing it as an (at best) unfortunate practical necessity dominated by (at least strong tendencies towards) the sins of greed and deceit. The just price tradition can be seen as a part of this moral critique of commerce and profiteering in general (see Profit Motive). At the same time, however, perhaps it can also be seen as staking out a way for commercial agents to ethically redeem themselves.

Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract Under senare tid har det blivit allt vanligare att olika typer av moraliska krav ställs på oss som konsumenter. Jag tänker här t.ex. på diskussioner om veganism/vegetarianism, krav på bojkotter av franska viner och Coca Cola, m.m., samt förstås det ökade utbudet av miljömärkta och rättvisemärkta varor, etiska fonder, etc. Vad är den etiska grunden för de typer av konsumentaktivism som förordas i dessa sammanhang? Jag kan se åtminstone två möjligheter: Antingen skall aktivismen tolkas enbart som en sorts indirekt strategi, vars lämplighet kan diskuteras utifrån konsekvensialistiska hänsyn. Eller så finns det något principiellt fel med att t.ex. köpa vissa produkter eller stödja vissa företag, oavsett vad konsekvenserna av detta beteende är. Den senare idén här tycker jag är mycket intressant. Utifrån beaktande av ett antal exempel tror jag att de flesta konsumentaktivister faktiskt också själva skulle stödja denna idé snarare än den konsekvensialistiska. Men hur skall den pliktetiska principen i detta sammanhang förstås närmare, och är någon sådan princip överhuvudtaget möjlig? I detta föredrag spekulerar jag kring några av de vanligaste förslagen i denna debatt, men inbjuder också åhörarna till en vidare diskussion kring ämnet i stort.

In recent years, however, microfinance institutions have been the target of much criticism due to their comparatively high interest rates (which may be as high as 70–100% per annum). This paper discusses whether it can be morally justified to charge very high rates of interest when lending money to the poor. Arguments are drawn from contemporary as well as historical debates on usury, exploitation, egalitarianism and consequentialism. It is conceded that it would be preferable if interest rates could be reduced, but it is argued that typical microlenders today do nothing wrong in setting their rates at the current levels. Instead the responsibility rests on governments, commercial banks and overseas investors to facilitate an environment where rates could be reduced.

This research utilizes normative concepts and has obvious normative implications and relevance. However, there has been little to no dialogue between this research and philosophers working on normative ethics. The present article seeks to remedy this situation by highlighting fertile points of dialogue between descriptive and normative ethicists. The proposition is that empirical researchers can become more precise and stringent in their descriptions of moral attitudes and traditions with a greater understanding of normative ethics; and, at the same time, philosophers have much to gain from a closer examination of the realities of moral thinking and social action. The concurrent examination of both strands of research may be especially rewarding.
