  • Gaming and Social Media Addiction in University Students: Sex Differences, Suitability of Symptoms, and Association With Psychosocial Difficulties
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Psychiatry. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1664-0640. ; 12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Previous research has shown that addictions to digital media can have negative impact on psychosocial health. Although Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) has received most scholarly recognition, the potential negative consequences of Social Media Disorder (SMD) have also been found. However, few studies have assessed the symptoms of these two digital media addictions in the same way, making comparisons difficult. The present study aims to fill this gap by investigating differences and similarities regarding how common the symptoms are, sex differences, the suitability of the symptoms, and their association with psychosocial difficulties. Method: A total of 688 university students (63.2% women, Mean age = 25.98) completed a questionnaire measuring symptoms of IGD and SMD, as well as psychosocial difficulties (i.e., psychosomatic symptoms, low self-concept, and social problems). Results: Results showed that 1.2% of the men and 0.9% of the women met the symptom criteria for IGD (non-significant difference), whereas 3.2% men and 2.8% women met the symptom criteria for SMD (non-significant difference). Dimensional analyses indicated that men had higher IGD scores compared to women, whereas the opposite was found for SMD. Symptoms of heavy involvement in digital media (i.e., Preoccupation, Tolerance, Withdrawal, Unsuccessful attempts to control, and Escape) had high sensitivity, but low positive predictive value (PPV). However, symptoms associated with negative consequences of digital media use (i.e., Loss of interest, Continued excessive use, Deception, and Jeopardizing career/relationships) had low sensitivity, but high PPV. These symptom patterns were similar for IGD and SMD. Meeting the criteria for IGD or SMD as well as being at risk of these disorders were significantly associated with psychosocial difficulties. Symptoms of SMD generally had stronger associations with psychosomatic symptoms compared to symptoms of IGD. Conclusions: We conclude that heavy involvement in digital media seems common among individuals with IGD or SMD, but also among those not meeting the symptom criteria, whereas negative consequences are less common but highly predictive of digital media addictions once present. Further attention to SMD is warranted, as it seems more common than IGD and also seems to be equally or more strongly associated with psychosocial difficulties.

  • Reliability and validity of a novel Kinect-based software program for measuring posture, balance and side-bending
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1471-2474. ; 19:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Clinical examinations are subjective and often show a low validity and reliability. Objective and highly reliable quantitative assessments are available in laboratory settings using 3D motion analysis, but these systems are too expensive to use for simple clinical examinations. Qinematic™ is an interactive movement analyses system based on the Kinect camera and is an easy-to-use clinical measurement system for assessing posture, balance and side-bending. The aim of the study was to test the test-retest the reliability and construct validity of Qinematic™ in a healthy population, and to calculate the minimal clinical differences for the variables of interest. A further aim was to identify the discriminative validity of Qinematic™ in people with low-back pain (LBP).METHODS: We performed a test-retest reliability study (n = 37) with around 1 week between the occasions, a construct validity study (n = 30) in which Qinematic™ was tested against a 3D motion capture system, and a discriminative validity study, in which a group of people with LBP (n = 20) was compared to healthy controls (n = 17). We tested a large range of psychometric properties of 18 variables in three sections: posture (head and pelvic position, weight distribution), balance (sway area and velocity in single- and double-leg stance), and side-bending.RESULTS: The majority of the variables in the posture and balance sections, showed poor/fair reliability (ICC < 0.4) and poor/fair validity (Spearman <0.4), with significant differences between occasions, between Qinematic™ and the 3D-motion capture system. In the clinical study, Qinematic™ did not differ between people with LPB and healthy for these variables. For one variable, side-bending to the left, there was excellent reliability (ICC =0.898), excellent validity (r = 0.943), and Qinematic™ could differentiate between LPB and healthy individuals (p = 0.012).CONCLUSION: This paper shows that a novel software program (Qinematic™) based on the Kinect camera for measuring balance, posture and side-bending has poor psychometric properties, indicating that the variables on balance and posture should not be used for monitoring individual changes over time or in research. Future research on the dynamic tasks of Qinematic™ is warranted.

  • Contrasting effects of geomorphic complexity on diversity of three aquatic organism groups after stream restoration
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Ecological theory states that greater habitat heterogeneity should support higher biodiversity. Many stream restoration projects aim to increase geomorphic complexity, assuming that this increases habitat heterogeneity and, thus, biodiversity. However, little evidence has been published that supports this theory, especially with respect to stream restoration and aquatic organisms.Previous assessments of stream habitat restoration have suffered from four major limitations: (1) incomplete quantification of habitat complexity metrics, (2) assessment of the responses of only one organism group, most often macroinvertebrates, (3) mismatch between scale of restoration and scale of disturbance, and (4) limited number of restoration measures applied. We used 12 metrics of geomorphic complexity spanning five dimensions of complexity (sediment grain size distribution, longitudinal profile, cross section, planform, and instream wood) to evaluate if the diversity, abundance and community composition of three aquatic organism groups (benthic macroinvertebrates, diatoms and macrophytes) relate positively to complexity along near-natural, restored and channelised stream reaches in rural northern Sweden where disturbance to the streams has been primarily reach-scale channelisation to facilitate timber floating. We found that the variation in biodiversity and abundance within each of the three organism groups could be described by multiple regression models that included only geomorphic complexity metrics, but the variation within an organism group could rarely be described by only one metric of complexity in isolation. Rather, three metrics were needed on average to describe the variation in biodiversity and abundance, and rarely did all metrics relate positively to diversity. Sediment grain size distribution metrics were most often significant as explanatory variables, but were inconsistent in the direction of influence. The other four dimensions of complexity were less consistently significant but were nearly all positively related to our diversity metrics. Most of the variation in these metrics was driven by advanced restoration techniques and to a lesser extent older best practice techniques. Three complexity metrics were most often included in multiple regression models as well as described community composition in ordinations:  a metric quantifying heterogeneity of small sediment sizes, a metric that represents the variation in stream depth along the longitudinal profile, and instream wood metrics. Therefore, specifically these metrics could be targets for future restoration. The organism groups were not concordant in their patterns of diversity, abundance, or community composition; thus, none can be used as a surrogate in monitoring biodiversity of these sites.Synthesis and applications. Geomorphic complexity should be measured in multiple dimensions, and ideally in all five dimensions, to understand the full breadth of restoration impacts to which organisms could be responding. More than one organism group should be used in monitoring to ensure biodiversity goals are met. Finally, even though the scale of the restorations matched the scale of the disturbance at the reach scale, the older best practice methods of restoration rarely restored the large-scale features necessary to bring the sites up to their potential levels of complexity as these elements (large boulders, bedrock, log jams) had been destroyed or removed from the system. Although the advanced restoration sites were the youngest, advanced restoration techniques that added big boulders, coarse gravel and instream wood increased complexity to a level that elicited a biological response. Finally, the complexity level needed to elicit a biological response could be difficult to understand for a given system, so we suggest doing restoration work in an experimental way in collaboration with geomorphologists to determine what level of complexity is needed.

  • Contrasting Responses among Aquatic Organism Groups to Changes in Geomorphic Complexity Along a Gradient of Stream Habitat Restoration : Implications for Restoration Planning and Assessment
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Water. - : MDPI. - 2073-4441. ; 10:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many stream restoration projects aim to increase geomorphic complexity, assuming that this increases habitat heterogeneity and, thus, biodiversity. However, empirical data supporting these linkages remain scant. Previous assessments of stream restoration suffer from incomplete quantification of habitat complexity, or a narrow focus on only one organism group and/or one restoration measure, limiting learning. Based on a comprehensive quantification of geomorphic complexity in 20 stream reaches in northern Sweden, ranging from streams channelized for timber floating to restored and reference reaches, we investigated responses of macroinvertebrates, diatoms, and macrophytes to multiple geomorphic metrics. Sediment size heterogeneity, which was generally improved in restored sites, favored macroinvertebrate and diatom diversity and macroinvertebrate abundance. In contrast, macrophyte diversity responded to increased variation along the longitudinal stream profile (e.g., step-pools), which was not consistently improved by the restoration. Our analyses highlight the value of learning across multiple restoration projects, both in identifying which aspects of restoration have succeeded, and pinpointing other measures that might be targeted during adaptive management or future restoration. Given our results, a combination of restoration measures targeting not only sediment size heterogeneity, but also features such as step-pools and instream wood, is most likely to benefit benthic biota in streams.

  • Values of Nature in Every-day Life: Words versus Action in Ecological Behaviour
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: SUSTAINABILITY. The Challenge. People, power and the environment.. - 1551641216 ; , s. 34-41
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of the chapter is to present aspects of generation and gender in relation to ecological behaviour in Sweden. Past studies have compared age groups, sexes or some other classified groups in relation to attitudes and behaviour. The studies present an empirical overview. To get a deeper understanding of attitudes and behaviour we are in need of theoretical renewal with references to both classical and modern sociological theory. A way to go is to focus on value orientation instead of attitudes and to focus on the behavioural dimension of individualism-collectivism instead of specified definitions of ecological behaviour. Values stress perspectives of ethics and morals on environmental problems. The effects of a problem can to some extent by a person be judged as favorable or unfavorable either to individuals or society. It seems as if culture bound experiences during the socialisation processes are important in understanding differences between sexes and generations in aspects of value orientation and ecological behaviour. The discussion ends in a typology of actors, namely the egoistic exploiter, the egoistic conservationist, the collectivistic conservationist, the collectivistic exploiter.

  • Analysis of the quality of optical fibre and fines measurement for prediction of dewatering characteristics for mechanical pulps
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The quality of the optical fibre and fines measurement has been investigated. Fibres and fines of different quality were mixed in defined proportions and the mixtures were characterized by means of optical fibre measurements and dewatering behaviour. The results show that the same measured fines amounts show different dewatering behaviour, depending on the quality of the fines used. The difference in fines quality was, however, not reflected in the optical measurement. We conclude that this is caused by too low resolution in the optical measurement, so there is a large need for higher resolution of the measurement equipments in order to make it possible to measure the shape of the fines.

  • Measurement and prediction of dewatering characteristics for mechanical pulps using optical fibre analyzers
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 2009 International Mechanical Pulping Conference, IMPC 2009. ; , s. 309-316
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this work was to obtain an on-line measurement for dewatering behaviour in the wire section based on fibre and fines characteristics. Four laboratory dewatering equipments were compared and the fibre characteristics were measured by means of optical fibre analyzers. The results show that rough correlations do appear to exist between the dewatering equipments; however they rank the pulps differently depending on the raw wood material used and whether the refining conditions are mild or harsh. The prediction models based on fibre characteristics showed a high degree of statistical accuracy. The descriptions, however, proved not to be sufficiently good with regards to the dewatering behaviour for them to be used in relation to on-line applications. This might have been because consideration was not given to some important variables which do, in fact, have a significant impact on the drainability. These variables could include physical fibre properties or others that are not measured, or properties that, at present, are unable to be measured at a sufficient resolution.

  • Influence of radiotherapy for the first tumor on aggressiveness of contralateral breast cancer
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Cancer. - : Wiley. - 0020-7136 .- 1097-0215. ; 132:10, s. 2388-2394
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We aimed to investigate if characteristics of contralateral breast cancer (CBC) are influenced by adjuvant radiotherapy for the first breast cancer. Using information from population-based registers and medical records, we analyzed two cohorts comprising all women with CBC diagnosed >3 months after their first cancer (809 patients in Stockholm 19762005 and 750 patients in South Sweden 19772005). We used Poisson regression to calculate risk of distant metastasis after CBC, comparing patients treated and not treated with radiotherapy for the first cancer. Logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratio (OR) of more aggressive tumor characteristics in the second cancer, compared to the first. For patients with CBC in Stockholm with <5 years between the cancers radiotherapy for the first cancer conferred a nearly doubled risk of distant metastasis [incidence rate ratio (IRR) = 1.91; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.272.88], compared to those not treated with radiotherapy. This was replicated in the South Swedish cohort [IRR = 2.12 (95% CI: 1.403.23)]. In Stockholm, we found an increased odds that, following radiotherapy, a second cancer was of more advanced TNM-stage [OR 2.16 (95% CI 1.134.11)] and higher histological grade [OR = 2.00 (95% CI 1.083.72)] compared to the first, for patients with CBC with <5 years between the cancers. No effect on any of the investigated outcomes was seen for patients diagnosed with CBC >5 years from the first cancer. In conclusion, patients diagnosed with CBC within 5 years had worse prognosis and more aggressive tumor characteristics of the second cancer, if they had received radiotherapy for their first cancer, compared to no radiotherapy.

  • Surface analysis of pure and complex mucin coatings
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Colloid and Interface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0021-9797 .- 1095-7103. ; 333:1, s. 180-187
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the past, we introduced the idea of using mucin coatings to improve biomaterials performance. Here, we evaluate non-radioactive methods for the analysis of pure and human host protein-containing (complex) mucin coatings on a real-type substrate (Thermanox). A common protein quantification assay (mBCA) was combined with mass-calibrated, enzyme-amplified assays based on lectin (ELLA) and antibody (ELISA)   recognition, to determine the total and specific amounts of surface-associated proteins. Model studies showed the mBCA assay to be of limited use at low mass loads, and steric effects to influence the ELLA at high surface layer densities. Non-specific responses due to   substrate interaction were low for the ELLA and ELISAs. Cross-reactions were observed during ELLA analysis of analytes sharing high degree of O-glycosylation. Combined mBCA-ELLA-ELISA analysis suggested that mucin desorption was low upon protein addition and that low concentrations of ELISA-determined Protein for the complex coatings Could be explained in terms of low accessibility of proteins to the bulk environment. Specifically, a methodology is presented for the determination of the fraction of surface-exposed, presumed bioactive proteins in a complex mucin coating. Finally, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and infrared reflectance spectroscopy combined with multivariate data analysis were proven useful in the evaluation of mucin-based coatings.

  • Longitudinal associations between digital media use and ADHD symptoms in children and adolescents: a systematic literature review
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: European Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1018-8827 .- 1435-165X.
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous reviews have often shown a link between digital media ADHD symptom levels. However, longitudinal studies are needed to find stronger evidence of a causal effect as well as to determine the direction of effects. The aim of the present review (PROSPERO CRD42021262695) was therefore to provide a systematic review of studies meeting the following inclusion criteria: (1) include longitudinal data investigating associations between digital media (i.e., gaming and social media) and later ADHD symptoms or vice versa, (2) be published within the past 10years (i.e., 2011 until June 2021), (3) be published in a peer-reviewed journal in English, and (4) include children or adolescents (age 0–17years). After a systematic search in the Web of Science and PsycInfo databases, we included 28 studies, all with adequate or high quality. Results showed support for reciprocal associations between digital media and ADHD symptoms, with associations being more consistent for problematic use of digital media than for screen time. Thus, children with ADHD symptoms appear more vulnerable to developing high or problematic use of digital media (i.e., selection effects), and digital media also have effects on later ADHD symptom levels, either because of specific characteristics of digital media or because of indirect effects on, for example, sleep and social relations (i.e., media effects). However, it should be emphasized that further studies investigating potential moderators and mediators are needed if we are to better understand the complex associations between digital media and ADHD symptom levels.
