  • Base of tongue squamous cell carcinomas, outcome depending on treatment strategy and p16 status. A population-based study from the Swedish Head and Neck Cancer Register
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Acta Oncologica. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0284-186X .- 1651-226X. ; 61:4, s. 433-440
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The base of tongue squamous cell carcinoma (BOTSCC) is mainly an HPV-related tumor. Radiotherapy (EBRT) ± concomitant chemotherapy (CT) is the backbone of the curatively intended treatment, with brachytherapy (BT) boost as an option. With four different treatment strategies in Sweden, a retrospective study based on the population-based Swedish Head and Neck Cancer Register (SweHNCR) was initiated.Material and methods: Data on tumors, treatment and outcomes in patients with BOTSCC treated between 2008 and 2014 were validated through medical records and updated as needed. Data on p16 status were updated or completed with immunohistochemical analysis of archived tumor material. Tumors were reclassified according to the UICC 8th edition. Results: Treatment was EBRT, EBRT + CT, EBRT + BT or EBRT + CT + BT in 151, 145, 82 and 167 patients respectively (n = 545). A p16 analysis was available in 414 cases; 338 were p16+ and 76 p16−. 5-year overall survival (OS) was 68% (95% CI: 64–72%), with76% and 37% for p16+ patients and p16− patients, respectively. An increase in OS was found with the addition of CT to EBRT for patients with p16+ tumors, stages II–III, but for patients with tumor stage I, p16+ (UICC 8) none of the treatment strategies was superior to EBRT alone. Conclusion: In the present retrospective population-based study of BOTSCC brachytherapy was found to be of no beneficial value in curatively intended treatment. An increase in survival was found for EBRT + CT compared to EBRT alone in patients with advanced cases, stages II and III (UICC 8), but none of the regimes was significantly superior to EBRT as a single treatment modality for stage I (UICC 8), provided there was p16 positivity in the tumor. In the small group of patients with p16− tumors, a poorer prognosis was found, but the small sample size did not allow any comparisons between different treatment strategies.

  • Adaptive capacity in the multi-level management system of migratory waterbirds : a case study of participatory goose management in Sweden
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Environmental Planning and Management. - : Routledge. - 0964-0568 .- 1360-0559. ; 67:3, s. 522-541
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Adaptive management (AM) is one approach to manage migratory waterbirds, but obstacles to the implementation of AM require adaptive capacities in the management system (rules, institutions, action situations). This study aims to examine the adaptive capacity of participatory goose management in Sweden. Considering the biophysical and institutional context, we analyzed how tangible, individual, and governance assets were associated with technical and social learning. Interviews with informants in the national council for geese, swans, and cranes, and local management groups (LMGs) were conducted, and documentation reviewed. Results revealed evidence of a local preparedness in areas with an LMG. Nevertheless, the study highlighted a need to formalize the evolving system, to consider a more systematic implementation of AM (including regulations allowing for adaptive responses), and to ensure stakeholder acceptance for management tools and visions. The study illustrates the need for a broad set of assets to ensure learning in participatory management.

  • Are birdwatchers willing to participate in local goose management? : A case study from Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Wildlife Research. - : Springer. - 1612-4642 .- 1439-0574. ; 69:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Stakeholder involvement in wildlife management is important and requires knowledge about factors motivating such participation. With several goose populations increasing in Europe and goose management incorporating multiple objectives, involvement of stakeholder groups with diverse interests is needed. In this study, we examined how evaluations of geese (attitude and acceptance capacity), but also experiences of birdwatching and birdwatcher identity, were associated with willingness to participate in local goose management. A survey among members of Sweden's largest birdwatching organization was conducted (n = 5010). The majority of respondents, 64%, displayed a divided evaluation of geese, most frequently in terms of an overall positive attitude towards geese but a low acceptance for current goose population levels (i.e. acceptance capacity). Birdwatchers' willingness to participate in goose management was generally low. Whereas they were more willing to take part in goose counts (i.e. monitoring) than to participate in local goose management groups, they were least willing to contribute to mitigating crop damage through scaring geese. Results further revealed that birdwatchers with a divided evaluation of geese and an entirely positive evaluation displayed the highest willingness to participate in goose management. However, a stronger distinct birdwatcher identity as a result of more birdwatching experiences was even more strongly associated with higher willingness to take part in goose management. The results highlight a need to intensify efforts to engage stakeholder groups with an interest in conservation issues in the participatory goose management system in Europe.

  • Individuals and Multilevel Management : A Study of the Perceived Adaptive Capacity of the Goose Management System among Farmers in Sweden
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Society and Natural Resources. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0894-1920 .- 1521-0723. ; 35:1, s. 1-19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Agricultural damage by geese is a growing problem in Europe and farmers play a key role in the emerging multilevel adaptive management system. This study explored how characteristics associated with the farmer and the farm, along with experience of damage, cognitive appraisals, emotions, and management beliefs were associated with the perceived adaptive capacity of the goose management system among farmers in the south of Sweden (n = 1,067). Survey results revealed that owning a larger farm, a farm closer to water or formally protected areas, along with cultivating cereal and root crops, were associated with geese evoking stronger negative emotions. Further, more previous experience of damage was related to stronger negative emotions and lower levels of perceived adaptive capacity. However, even more important determinants of perceived adaptive capacity were cognitive appraisals, emotions, and management beliefs. Bridging the ties between individual farmers and the system is important for improved multilevel management.

  • The importance of structural, situational, and psychological factors for involving hunters in the adaptive flyway management of geese
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 2045-2322. ; 13:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Adaptive flyway management of superabundant geese is emerging as a strategy to reduce damage to agricultural crops and other ecosystem disservices, while also ensuring sustainable use and conservation objectives. Given the calls for intensified hunting as part of flyway management in Europe, we need to increase the understanding of structural, situational, and psychological factors important for goose hunting among hunters. Our survey data, retrieved in southern Sweden, showed a higher potential to intensify hunting among goose hunters than other hunters. In response to hypothetical policy instruments (including regulations, collaborative, and others), hunters declared a minor increase in their intention to hunt geese, with the greatest expected increase among goose hunters should the hunting season be extended. Situational factors (e.g., access to hunting grounds) were associated with goose hunting (frequency, bag size, and intention to increase hunting). In addition, controlled motivation (derived from external pressures or to avoid guilt) and more importantly autonomous motivation (due to hunting being enjoyable or valuable) were along with goose hunter identity positively associated with goose hunting. Hunters’ involvement in flyway management may be encouraged by using policy instruments to remove situational barriers and facilitate their autonomous motivation.

  • Ultralarge Virtual Screening Identifies SARS-CoV-2 Main Protease Inhibitors with Broad-Spectrum Activity against Coronaviruses
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 144:7, s. 2905-2920
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Drugs targeting SARS-CoV-2 could have saved millions of lives during the COVID-19 pandemic, and it is now crucial to develop inhibitors of coronavirus replication in preparation for future outbreaks. We explored two virtual screening strategies to find inhibitors of the SARS-CoV-2 main protease in ultralarge chemical libraries. First, structure-based docking was used to screen a diverse library of 235 million virtual compounds against the active site. One hundred top-ranked compounds were tested in binding and enzymatic assays. Second, a fragment discovered by crystallographic screening was optimized guided by docking of millions of elaborated molecules and experimental testing of 93 compounds. Three inhibitors were identified in the first library screen, and five of the selected fragment elaborations showed inhibitory effects. Crystal structures of target-inhibitor complexes confirmed docking predictions and guided hit-to-lead optimization, resulting in a noncovalent main protease inhibitor with nanomolar affinity, a promising in vitro pharmacokinetic profile, and broad-spectrum antiviral effect in infected cells.

  • Understanding and overcoming obstacles in adaptive management
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Trends in Ecology and Evolution. - : Elsevier Ltd.. - 0169-5347 .- 1872-8383. ; 38:1, s. 55-71
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Adaptive management (AM) is widely promoted to improve management of natural resources, yet its implementation is challenging. We show that obstacles to the implementation of AM are related not only to the AM process per se but also to external factors such as ecosystem properties and governance systems. To overcome obstacles, there is a need to build capacities within the AM process by ensuring adequate resources, management tools, collaboration, and learning. Additionally, building capacities in the legal and institutional frames can enable the necessary flexibility in the governance system. Furthermore, in systems experiencing profound changes in wildlife populations, building such capacities may be even more critical as more flexibility will be needed to cope with increased uncertainty and changed environmental conditions.

  • Identification of a C2-symmetric diol based human immunodeficiency virus protease inhibitor targeting Zika virus NS2B-NS3 protease
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Biomolecular Structure and Dynamics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0739-1102 .- 1538-0254. ; 38:18, s. 5526-5536
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Zika virus (ZIKV) is an emerging mosquito-borne flavivirus and infection by ZIKV Asian lineage is known to cause fetal brain anomalies and Guillain-Barrés syndrome. The WHO declared ZIKV a global public health emergency in 2016. However, currently neither vaccines nor antiviral prophylaxis/treatments are available. In this study, we report the identification of a C2-symmetric diol-based Human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV) protease inhibitor active against ZIKV NS2B-NS3 protease. The compound, referred to as 9b, was identified by in silico screening of a library of 6265 protease inhibitors. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation studies revealed that compound 9b formed a stable complex with ZIKV protease. Interaction analysis of compound 9b's binding pose from the cluster analysis of MD simulations trajectories predicted that 9b mostly interacted with ZIKV NS3. Although designed as an aspartyl protease inhibitor, compound 9b was found to inhibit ZIKV serine protease in vitro with IC50 = 143.25 ± 5.45 µM, in line with the in silico results. Additionally, linear interaction energy method (LIE) was used to estimate binding affinities of compounds 9b and 86 (a known panflavivirus peptide hybrid with IC50 = 1.64 ± 0.015 µM against ZIKV protease). The LIE method correctly predicted the binding affinity of compound 86 to be lower than that of 9b, proving to be superior to the molecular docking methods in scoring and ranking compounds. Since most of the reported ZIKV protease inhibitors are positively charged peptide-hybrids, with our without electrophilic warheads, compound 9b represents a less polar and more drug-like non-peptide hit compound useful for further optimization.Communicated by Ramaswamy Sarma.

  • Targeting the NS2B-NS3 protease of tick-borne encephalitis virus with pan-flaviviral protease inhibitors
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Antiviral Research. - : Elsevier. - 0166-3542 .- 1872-9096. ; 190
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a severe neurological disorder caused by tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), a member of the Flavivirus genus. Currently, two vaccines are available in Europe against TBEV. However, TBE cases have been rising in Sweden for the past twenty years, and thousands of cases are reported in Europe, emphasizing the need for antiviral treatments against this virus. The NS2B-NS3 protease is essential for flaviviral life cycle and has been studied as a target for the design of inhibitors against several well-known flaviviruses, but not TBEV. In the present study, Compound 86, a known tripeptidic inhibitor of dengue (DENV), West Nile (WNV) and Zika (ZIKV) proteases, was predicted to be active against TBEV protease using a combination of in silico techniques. Further, Compound 86 was found to inhibit recombinant TBEV protease with an IC50 = 0.92 mu M in the in vitro enzymatic assay. Additionally, two more peptidic analogues were synthetized and they displayed inhibitory activities against both TBEV and ZIKV proteases. In particular, Compound 104 inhibited ZIKV protease with an IC50 = 0.25 mu M. These compounds represent the first reported inhibitors of TBEV protease to date and provides valuable information for the further development of TBEV as well as pan-flavivirus protease inhibitors.

  • Macrocyclic Peptidomimetics as Inhibitors of Insulin-Regulated Aminopeptidase (IRAP)
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: RSC Medicinal chemistry. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2632-8682. ; 11:2, s. 234-244
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Macrocyclic analogues of the linear hexapeptide, angiotensin IV (AngIV) have proved to be potent inhibitors of insulin-regulated aminopeptidase (IRAP, oxytocinase, EC 3.4.11.3). Along with higher affinity, macrocycles may also offer better metabolic stability, membrane permeability and selectivity, however predicting the outcome of particular cycle modifications is challenging. Here we describe the development of a series of macrocyclic IRAP inhibitors with either disulphide, olefin metathesis or lactam bridges and variations of ring size and other functionality. The binding mode of these compounds is proposed based on molecular dynamics analysis. Estimation of binding affinities (∆G) and relative binding free energies (∆∆G) with the linear interaction energy (LIE) method and free energy perturbation (FEP) method showed good general agreement with the observed inhibitory potency. Experimental and calculated data highlight the cumulative importance of an intact N-terminal peptide, the specific nature of the macrocycle, the phenolic oxygen and the C-terminal functionality.

  • Remaking the socio-spatial fix: Actors, time and crisis in two iron ore towns
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Environment and planning A. - : Sage Publications. - 0308-518X .- 1472-3409.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ‘spatial fix’ has been central to economic geography for nearly 50 years, examining capitalist development through both stability and change. Harvey’s original conceptions of the fix prioritised capital’s capacity to fix space to accumulate and forestall crisis. We continue this by considering the ‘socio-spatial fix’, allowing closer investigation of who makes the landscapes of capitalism, and how actor choices and actor inter- and intra-relationships forestall crises of accumulation. We show how crisis, time and actors are central to making and re-making socio-spatial fixes and in turn to understanding both the socio-spatial dialectic and the spatial fix. Empirically, we compare two remote but globally networked mining towns, Kiruna, Sweden and Newman, Australia. Mining towns are rewarding case-studies because capital’s relative immobility and the dominance of a single industry make strikingly clear how both production and social reproduction are remade. We enrich general theorisations in three ways, by explaining: first, how crisis-threatening events require renegotiation of socio-spatial arrangements; second, how time and timing are critical in remaking fixes; third, how actor agency and heterogeneity are central because the actors who make fixes change over time and are in complex relationships with each other.

  • Why Fighter Pilots are Leaving the Swedish Armed Forces – and how to Retain them
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Military Studies. - : Scandinavian Military Studies. - 2596-3856. ; 5:1, s. 364-378
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The number of fighter pilots in Sweden retiring from service, many prematurely, currently exceeds the number of those being trained to replace them. This article examines the factors and circumstances related to the work motivation of pilots and what the Swedish Armed Forces (SAF) can do to retain them. It examines the perspectives of fighter pilots serving today and those who have chosen to leave the SAF since 2013, providing descriptions of different ideal professional types and what might provoke them to leave the profession, or motivate them to stay longer. Four ideal types of pilots are identified. These ideal types are (a) the extrinsically motivated; (b) the high-performing; (c) the family-oriented; and (d) the specialist. This article supports the idea that there is no single inducement for fighter pilots to leave the SAF. Our recommendations for retaining pilots differ depending on type and experience level. While increased salaries and better retirement agreements are essential, local career opportunities, less time away from family, more administrative support to squadrons, long-term career planning, rewarding challenges, and opportunities to study are also important. Some uniquely positive aspects, such as serving a higher purpose, flying experiences, and squadron community, motivate fighter pilots to remain.

  • Synthesis of Sulfonimidamide-Based Amino Acid Building Blocks with Orthogonal Protecting Groups
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Organic Chemistry. - : WILEY-V C H VERLAG GMBH. - 1434-193X .- 1099-0690. ; :5, s. 1045-1057
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Herein, we report the synthesis of novel sulfonimidamides (SIAs) based on amino acid building blocks using a one-pot method from tert-butyldiphenylsilyl-protected (TBDPS) sulfonamides, as well as exploration of orthogonal deprotection strategies. Among the several protecting groups investigated, TBDPS showed higher conversion, allowed UV detection and simple diastereomeric separation; in particular in combination with amino acid tert-butyl esters. Moreover, we applied the present method to synthesize cyclic five-membered acyl sulfonimidamides in two steps. The described synthesis of SIA-based amino acid building blocks in combination with the orthogonal protection groups provide access to unnatural amino acid building blocks useful for further incorporation into larger molecules, such as peptide-based transition-state analogues and peptidomimetics. The chirality of the SIA group, as well as its additional point of diversity provided by the extra NH group, creates opportunities for the development of unique compound libraries that explore new chemical space, which is of considerable importance for the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industry.

  • Neoliberal trajectories in mining : Comparing Malmfälten and the Pilbara
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: European journal of industrial relations. - : Sage Publications. - 0959-6801 .- 1461-7129. ; 26:3, s. 297-312
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We compare the iron ore sectors and mining regions of Malmfälten in Sweden and the Pilbara in Australia. Both are physically isolated and the product is economically vital, but we find differences in industrial relations which accord with what would be expected in coordinated and liberal market economies. A closer examination, attentive to history and geography and in which changes in institutional form and function are highlighted, reveals, however, that these differences are more apparent than real, and that there is a common neoliberal trajectory. This analysis also suggests that changes in these sites at times drive transformations in national industrial relations.

  • Finding the Right Level: Corporate Responsibility Communication in Swedish Retail
  • 2009
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Corporate responsibility (CR) communication has risen dramatically in recent years, most likely following increased demands for transparency. One tendency noted in the literature is that CR communication becomes more professionalised in the sense that it is taken care of by experts to satisfy the demands of particular stakeholders. In this paper, the CR communication of Sweden’s 206 largest retail firms is studied. We examine the ‘filtration effect’ present in business today. By comparing CR communication in parent companies and their subsidiaries, we show that the there is less communication on the subsidiary level compared to the parent level. We see this as a form of hierarchisation of communication that implies paying attention to certain stakeholder groups with clearly defined demands and expectations on companies. Surprisingly enough, CR communication does not seem to be very much adapted to customers.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Business Ethics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0167-4544 .- 1573-0697. ; 100:1, s. 31-43
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Corporate responsibility (CR) communication has risen dramatically in recent years, following increased demands for transparency. One tendency noted in the literature is that CR communication is organised and structured. Corporations tend to professionalise CR communication in the sense that they provide information that corresponds to demands for transparency that are voiced by certain stakeholders. This also means that experts within the firm tend to communicate with professional stakeholders outside the firm. In this paper, a particular aspect of the organisation of CR communication is examined, a phenomenon that we refer to as the ‘filtration effect’. By comparing CR communication in parent companies and their subsidiaries, we show empirically that there is considerably less CR communication at the subsidiary level compared to the parent level. We see filtration as a sign of conscious organising of CR communication that implies particular attention to certain stakeholder groups with clearly defined demands and expectations on companies. The strong filtration effect noted in the study suggests that CR communication does not seem to be very much adapted to customers, which may be problematic both from a communicative and ethical perspective. The study covers Sweden’s 206 largest retail firms.

  • The internal significance of codes of conduct in retail companies
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Business Ethics. A European Review. - : Wiley. - 0962-8770 .- 1467-8608. ; 21:3, s. 263-275
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper focuses on the significance of codes of conducts (CoCs) in the internal work context of two retail companies. A stepwise approach is used. First, the paper identifies in what way employees use and refer to CoCs internally. Second, the function and relevance of CoCs inside the two companies are identified. Third, the paper explains why CoCs tend to function in the identified ways. In both cases, the CoCs are clearly decoupled in the sense that they do not concern the immediate work context of the employees. Counter-intuitively, this facilitates the process of establishing the CoCs. Even though the CoCs are not directly relevant for the employees, they are accepted and embraced both with regard to contents, focus and function. Above all, the CoCs seem to confirm and even strengthen employee identity. On the basis of these observations, it is suggested that CoCs should not only be valued in light of their direct organisational consequences or lack of such consequences. The issue is not just whether CoCs are decoupled or not. Rather, it is argued that researchers should consider more closely a two-level analysis which takes into account not only the concrete application of CoCs but also their function and meaning. An implication of this is that what might appear as a decoupled code cannot be dismissed as irrelevant to the ‘core’ of the organisation.

  • Understanding internal processes for sustainability in retail : Corporate disclosure or concealment?
  • 2010
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The retail industry has to conform to norms concerning social and environmental responsibility. For that reason, retail companies engage in processes for increased sustainability. Research indicates that there is a strong presence of communication on sustainability, codes of conduct, sustainability reports, etc. Even though such instruments are numerous, it proves little when it comes to the actual processes for sustainability inside retail firms. The purpose of the paper is to reach a deepened understanding of processes for sustainability in retail firms. The paper is empirical, which means that we focus on how retail firms actually understand and describe their processes for sustainability. Qualitative content analysis is used. Setting out from information on sustainability given in sustainability reports, we apply a framework where we divide the contents of sustainability processes into visions, activities, structures and outputs. Our findings establish that even leading retail firms that devote substantial resources to communication on sustainability issues have difficulties in articulating coherent processes for sustainability. Even though there are exceptions, a fragmented picture of sustainability processes can be found when retail companies talk about their achievements in terms of sustainability. This may imply weak descriptions focusing mainly on visions or objectives for sustainable business without coherent reasoning that ends up in concrete activities or output measures. This can be interpreted as either signs of conscious or unconscious concealment of actual processes or as the lack of genuine processes of this kind. The implications of both alternatives are discussed.

  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper takes its point of departure in an article by Stevens [Stevens, B.: 1994, Journal of Business Ethics 54, 163–171], in which she identified a lack of knowledge regarding how corporate codes of ethics are communicated and affect behavior in organizations. Taking heed of this suggested gap, we review studies on corporate codes of ethics with an empirical content, published since 1994. The conclusion of the review is that we still lack knowledge on how codes work, how they are communicated and how they are transformed inside organizations. Stevens’ plea could even be extended, arguing that the knowledge gap might be of even more significance than in the mid-1990s. Some directions for how this situation can be approached in future studies are outlined in the paper.

  • Codes, ethics and cross-cultural differences : stories from the implementation of a corporate code of ethics in a MNC subsidiary
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business Ethics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0167-4544 .- 1573-0697. ; 82:2, s. 281-291
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we focus on the cross- cultural aspects of the implementation of an American company’s code of ethics into its Swedish subsidiary. We identify the cross-cultural stories that the receivers in the subsidiary use when trying to explain the parent’s code and conceptualize these stories as part of an emerging narrative of national belonging and differences. The receivers resisted the code by amplifying the importance of national identity. Rather than stimulating a discussion on ethics that might have strengthened the ties between the parent and the subsidiary, the outcome of the code implementation had the opposite effect. The article concludes by stressing the process of implementing codes across cultures rather than code content.

  • On the dark side of codes! : Domination not enlightenment
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 27:1, s. 24-33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we show how a middle manager interprets the action of two employees as problematic and how he solves it by using the company's code of ethics as the basis for firing them. Our telling of the story unmasks a darker side of codes and we conceptualize it in terms of power and domination. The paper contributes to the literature on corporate codes of ethics (CCEs) and corporate ethics programs by showing that such codes need not necessarily play an enabling role in organizations. Rather than being instruments of enlightenment and self-regulation, they may be used as instruments to further domination.

  • Corporate codes of ethics and the bending of moral space
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Organization. - London : Sage Publications. - 1350-5084 .- 1461-7323. ; 16:4, s. 529-545
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • What happens when corporate codes of ethics (CCEs) `go to work', and how do they influence moral practice? Even though previous research has posed these or similar questions, the role and the effect of the CCE are still dubious. In this article, it is argued that this is predominantly because previous research is fixed in a position in which CCEs are passive artefacts with no capability of bending space, and in which agency and morality are limited to the human sphere only. An approach to the study and understanding of CCEs in which the travel of the CCE is made the focus of the research is therefore developed. The code comes alive in a heterogeneous materiality, travelling as a result of a wide range of translations, and granted an epistemological capability of influencing humans' world-views and moral practices. The approach is illustrated with a case study on CCE-implementation and it is concluded that through generating more accounts like this, researchers and practitioners are not only in a better position to understand how CCEs `go to work', but also in a better position to shoulder moral responsibility.

  • Dirty work as seriality
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Tamara Journal. - 1532-5555 .- 1545-6420. ; 14:3, s. 99-111
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The literature on dirty work has traditionally zoomed in on workplace studies of occupational groups stigmatized by some parts of society. In this paper the bias is challenged and extended with the aid of Iris Marion Young’s appropriation of Jean-Paul Sartre’s concept of seriality and an empirical study of workers with non-stigmatized occupations in stigmatized work contexts (arms and pornography). The study shows that the workers have to be constantly ready to deal with work-related dirt in their identity work and to do this without any means of support, development of a language or resistance to the transfer of dirt.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Rural Studies. - : Elsevier. - 0743-0167 .- 1873-1392. ; 78, s. 78-86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article presents a case analysis of the work regime at a uranium mine, located on indigenous land in northern Saskatchewan, Canada. All the miners are flown in and out (FIFO), and with nearly half the workforce coming from different indigenous communities. We ask how the miners participate in and experience life as FIFO workers, and enrol the community concept in the analysis. Defining community as not merely a group of people or a place but also, in the wake of Tönnies’ classic work, as a matter of attitude, the case analysis reveals a community at work but fragmentation of indigenous communities off work.

  • One Code to Rule Them All : Management Control and Individual Responsibility in Contexts
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Business and Professional Ethics Journal. - : Philosophy Documentation Center. - 0277-2027 .- 2153-7828. ; 34:2, s. 259-290
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is about how multiple contexts influence employees’ and managers’ enactments of a standardized corporate code of ethics. An earlier local Swedish case study of how a code is enacted is extended to include enactments during business trips to Ottawa (Canada), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and New Delhi (India). The paper shows that although the code is possible to enact as remote and insignificant (‘not relevant to me’) in the local study, when travelling to different contexts it is enacted as intrusive (affecting core operations) and fluid (highlighting seeming contradictions). The paper highlights the consequences of these enactments in terms of management control and individual responsibility) and suggests ways for better understanding how a code is expected to perform, meant to work and keep on working.

  • Organizing rocks : Actor-network theory and space
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Organization. - : Sage Publications. - 1350-5084 .- 1461-7323. ; 27:5, s. 701-716
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In an ethnography of the organizing of an underground mine, this article critically engages with actor–network theory’s theorizing of space, particularly the risk of drifting into spatial pluralism. Inspired by Annemarie Mol’s The Body Multiple, a space multiple approach is enrolled in which seemingly disparate enactments of the mining operations are understood in terms of coexistence and difference, inclusion and exclusion. Such an account attempts to cast aside a kind of neatness that jeopardizes the empirical openness that makes actor–network theory so fruitful to work with in organization studies dealing with spatial complexity.

  • Laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy is more cost-effective than open resection: results from a Swedish randomized controlled trial
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: HPB. - : ELSEVIER SCI LTD. - 1365-182X .- 1477-2574. ; 25:8, s. 972-979
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundLaparoscopic distal pancreatectomy is being implemented worldwide. The aim of this study was to perform a cost-effectiveness analysis from a health care perspective.MethodsThis cost-effectiveness analysis was based on the randomized controlled trial LAPOP, where 60 patients were randomized to open or laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy. For the follow-up of two years, resource use from a health care perspective was recorded, and health-related quality of life was assessed using the EQ-5D-5L. The per-patient mean cost and quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) were compared using nonparametric bootstrapping.ResultsFifty-six patients were included in the analysis. The mean health care costs were lower, €3863 (95% CI: -€8020 to €385), for the laparoscopic group. Postoperative quality of life improved with laparoscopic resection and resulted in a gain in QALYs of 0.08 (95% CI: −0.09 to 0.25). The laparoscopic group had lower costs and improved QALYs in 79% of bootstrap samples. With a cost-per-QALY threshold of €50 000, 95.4% of the bootstrap samples were in favour of laparoscopic resection.ConclusionLaparoscopic distal pancreatectomy is associated with numerically lower health care costs and improvements in QALYs compared with the open approach. The results support the ongoing transition from open to laparoscopic distal pancreatectomies.
