  • Investigation of magnetic droplet solitons using x-ray holography with extended references
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A dissipative magnetic soliton, or magnetic droplet, is a structure that has been predicted to exist within a thin magnetic layer when non-linearity is balanced by dispersion, and a driving force counteracts the inherent damping of the spin precession. Such a soliton can be formed beneath a nano-contact (NC) that delivers a large spin-polarized current density into a magnetic layer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Although the existence of droplets has been confirmed from electrical measurements and by micromagnetic simulations, only a few attempts have been made to directly observe the magnetic landscape that sustains these structures, and then only for a restricted set of experimental parameter values. In this work we use and x-ray holography technique HERALDO, to image the magnetic structure of the [ Co/ Ni] x4 multilayer within a NC orthogonal pseudo spin-valve, for different range of magnetic fields and injected electric currents. The magnetic configuration imaged at -33 mA and 0.3 T for devices with 90 nm NC diameter reveals a structure that is within the range of current where the droplet soliton exist based on our electrical measurements and have it is consistent with the expected size of the droplet (similar to 100 nm diameter) and its spatial position within the sample. We also report the magnetisation configurations observed at lower DC currents in the presence of fields (0-50 mT), where it is expected to observe regimes of the unstable droplet formation.

  • Time-resolved imaging of magnetization dynamics in double nanocontact spin torque vortex oscillator devices
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 100:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Double nanocontact (NC) spin transfer vortex oscillator devices, in which NCs of 100-nm diameter have center-to-center separation ranging from 200 to 1100 nm, have been studied by means of electrical measurements and time-resolved scanning Kerr microscopy (TRSKM). The NCs were positioned close to the edge of the top electrical contact so that the magnetization dynamics of the adjacent region could be probed optically. The electrical measurements showed different ranges of frequency operation for devices with different NC separations. For 900-nm NC separation, TRSKM showed magnetic contrast consistent with the formation of a magnetic vortex at each NC, while for 200-nm NC separation a lack of magnetic contrast near the NC region suggests that the magnetization dynamics occur closer to the NC and underneath the top contact. TRSKM also reveals the presence of additional localized dynamical features far from the NCs, which are not seen by electrical measurements; has not been reported previously for double NCs with different separations; and provides insight into how the dynamic state of the phase-locked oscillators is established and stabilized.

  • Integration of GMR-based spin torque oscillators and CMOS circuitry
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Solid-State Electronics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0038-1101 .- 1879-2405. ; 111, s. 91-99
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper demonstrates the integration of giant magnetoresistance (GMR) spin torque oscillators (STO) with dedicated high frequency CMOS circuits. The wire-bonding-based integration approach is employed in this work, since it allows easy implementation, measurement and replacement. A GMR STO is wire-bonded to the dedicated CMOS integrated circuit (IC) mounted on a PCB, forming a (GMR STO + CMOS IC) pair. The GMR STO has a lateral size of 70 nm and more than an octave of tunability in the microwave frequency range. The proposed CMOS IC provides the necessary bias-tee for the GMR STO, as well as electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection and wideband amplification targeting high frequency GMR STO-based applications. It is implemented in a 65 nm CMOS process, offers a measured gain of 12 dB, while consuming only 14.3 mW and taking a total silicon area of 0.329 mm(2). The measurement results show that the (GMR STO + CMOS IC) pair has a wide tunability range from 8 GHz to 16.5 GHz and improves the output power of the GMR STO by about 10 dB. This GMR STO-CMOS integration eliminates wave reflections during the signal transmission and therefore exhibits good potential for developing high frequency GMR STO-based applications, which combine the features of CMOS and STO technologies. • Effect of canted magnetic field on magnetic droplet nucleation boundaries
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The influence on magnetic droplet nucleation boundaries by canted magnetic elds are investigated and reported. The nucleation boundary condition, In = αAH + BH + C, is determined at different canted angles (0°< θH<20°) using magnetoresistance (MR) and microwave measurements in nanocontact spintorque oscillators (NC-STOs). As θH increased, the nucleation boundary shifts gradually towards higher In and H. The coefficient B of the nucleation boundary equation also nearly doubled as θH increases. On theother hand, the coefficient αA remained constant for all values of θH. These observations can be explained by considering the drift instability of magnetic droplets and the different tilt behaviour of the Co fixed layer induced by different θH.

  • Magnetic droplet nucleation boundary in orthogonal spin-torque nano-oscillators
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Static and dynamic magnetic solitons play a critical role in applied nanomagnetism. Magnetic droplets, a type of non-topological dissipative soliton, can be nucleated and sustained in nanocontact spin-torque oscillators with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy free layers. Here, we perform a detailed experimental determination of the full droplet nucleation boundary in the current–field plane for a wide range of nanocontact sizes and demonstrate its excellent agreement with an analytical expression originating from a stability analysis. Our results reconcile recent contradicting reports of the field dependence of the droplet nucleation. Furthermore, our analytical model both highlights the relation between the fixed layer material and the droplet nucleation current magnitude, and provides an accurate method to experimentally determine the spin transfer torque asymmetry of each device.

  • Magnetic droplet solitons in orthogonal spin valves

  • Ingår i: Fizika Nizkih Temperatur. - : American Institute of Physics (AIP). - 0132-6414 .- 1816-0328. ; 41:10, s. 833-837
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We review the recent experimental advancements in the realization and understanding of magnetic droplet solitons generated by spin transfer torque in orthogonal nanocontact based spin torque nanooscillators (STNOs) fabricated on extended spin valves and spin valve nanowires. The magnetic droplets are detected and studied using the STNO microwave signal and its resistance, the latter both quasistatically and time-resolved. The droplet nucleation current is found to have a minimum at intermediate magnetic field strengths and the nature of the nucleation changes gradually from a single sharp step well above this field, mode-hopping around the minimum, and continuous at low fields. The mode-hopping and continuous transitions are ascribed to droplet drift instability and re-nucleation at different time scales, which is corroborated by time-resolved measurements. We argue that the use of tilted anisotropy fixed layers could reduce the nucleation current further, move the nucleation current minimum to lower fields, and potentially remove the need for an applied magnetic field altogether. Finally, evidence of an edge mode droplet in a nanowire is presented.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present recent experimental and numerical advancements in the understanding of spin transfer torque generated magnetic droplet solitons. The experimental work focuses on nano-contact spin torque oscillators (NC-STOs) based on orthogonal (pseudo) spin valves where the Co fixed layer has an easy-plane anisotropy, and the [Co/Ni] free layer has a strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The NC-STO resistance and microwave signal generation are measured simultaneously as a function of drive current and applied perpendicular magnetic field. Both exhibit dramatic transitions at a certain current dependent critical field value, where the microwave frequency drops 10 GHz, modulation sidebands appear, and the resistance exhibits a jump, while the magnetoresistance changes sign. We interpret these observations as the nucleation of a magnetic droplet soliton with a large fraction of its magnetization processing with an angle greater than 90 degrees, i.e., around a direction opposite that of the applied field. This interpretation is corroborated by numerical simulations. When the field is further increased, we find that the droplet eventually collapses under the pressure from the Zeeman energy. • We present a comprehensive review of the most recent advances in nanocontact spin torque oscillators (NC-STOs). NC-STOs are highly tunable, with both applied magnetic field and dc, broadband microwave signal generators. As opposed to the nanopillar geometry, where the lateral cross section of the entire device has been confined to a typically <100 nm diameter, in NC-STOs, it is only the current injection site that has been laterally confined on top of an extended magnetic film stack. Three distinct material combinations will be discussed: 1) a Co/Cu/NiFe pseudospin valve (PSV) where both the Co and NiFe have a dominant in-plane anisotropy; 2) a Co/Cu/[Co/Ni](4) orthogonal PSV where the Co/Ni multilayer has a strong perpendicular anisotropy; and 3) a single NiFe layer with asymmetric non-magnetic Cu leads. We explore the rich and diverse magnetodynamic modes that can be generated in these three distinct sample geometries.

  • Spin-Wave-Mode Coexistence on the Nanoscale : A Consequence of the Oersted-Field-Induced Asymmetric Energy Landscape
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 110:25, s. 257202-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It has been argued that if multiple spin wave modes are competing for the same centrally located energy source, as in a nanocontact spin torque oscillator, that only one mode should survive in the steady state. Here, the experimental conditions necessary for mode coexistence are explored. Mode coexistence is facilitated by the local field asymmetries induced by the spatially inhomogeneous Oersted field, which leads to a physical separation of the modes, and is further promoted by spin wave localization at reduced applied field angles. Finally, both simulation and experiment reveal a low frequency signal consistent with the intermodulation of two coexistent modes.

    • In a nano-contact Co/Cu/NiFe spin torque oscillator, mode-jumping between up to three frequencies within 22.5-24.0 GHz is electrically observed in the time domain. The measurements reveal toggling between two states with differing oscillation amplitude, of which the low-amplitude state is further divided into two rapidly alternating modes. Analysis of the mode dwell time statistics and the total time spent in each mode is carried out, and it is found that in both aspects the balance between the modes is greatly altered with the DC drive current.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nanocontact spin-torque oscillators (NC-STOs) act as intrinsically nanoscale and highly current and magnetic field tunable, ultrawide band microwave signal generators. However, their low output power and high phase noise remain critical obstacles toward actual applications. Mutual synchronization of multiple NCs is one possibility to overcome these shortcomings. This letter presents a detailed study of the mutual synchronization in a NC-STO with two NCs. In particular, the effect of repeated measurements on the synchronization behavior is explored. Repeated measurements at high drive currents are shown to significantly degrade the performance of the devices with the most striking consequence being that the devices can no longer be synchronized. Ferromagnetic resonance measurements reveal a decrease in the saturation magnetization and an increase in the damping coefficient in annealed NiFe films, consistent with Cu diffusion into the NiFe from the adjacent Cu layers. This increase in damping will act to sever the spin wave-mediated communication channel between the NCs necessary for synchronization. These results highlight an important consideration when studying the synchronization behavior of multi-NC devices where Joule heating is expected to scale unfavorably with the number of NCs.

    • Time-resolved scanning Kerr microscopy has been used to directly image the magnetization dynamics of nanocontact (NC) spin-torque vortex oscillators (STVOs) when phase locked to an injected microwave (rf) current. The Kerr images reveal free-layer magnetization dynamics that extend outside the NC footprint, where they cannot be detected electrically, but which are crucial to phase-lock STVOs that share common magnetic layers. For a single NC, dynamics were observed not only when the STVO frequency was fully locked to that of the rf current, but also for a partially locked state characterized by periodic changes in the core trajectory at the rf frequency. For a pair of NCs, we explore the correlation between the spatial character of injection-locked dynamics and the free-running spectra. Insight gained from these images may improve understanding of the conditions required for mutual phase locking of multiple STVOs, and hence enhanced microwave power emission.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nano-contact spin-torque vortex oscillators (STVOs) are anticipated to find application as nanoscale sources of microwave emission in future technological applications. Presently the output power and phase stability of individual STVOs are not competitive with existing oscillator technologies. Synchronisation of multiple nano-contact STVOs via magnetisation dynamics has been proposed to enhance the microwave emission. The control of device-to-device variations, such as mode splitting of the microwave emission, is essential if multiple STVOs are to be successfully synchronised. In this work a combination of electrical measurements and time-resolved scanning Kerr microscopy (TRSKM) was used to demonstrate how mode splitting in the microwave emission of STVOs was related to the magnetisation dynamics that are generated. The free-running STVO response to a DC current only was used to identify devices and bias magnetic field configurations for which single and multiple modes of microwave emission were observed. Stroboscopic Kerr images were acquired by injecting a small amplitude RF current to phase lock the free-running STVO response. The images showed that the magnetisation dynamics of a multimode device with moderate splitting could be controlled by the injected RF current so that they exhibit similar spatial character to that of a single mode. Significant splitting was found to result from a complicated equilibrium magnetic state that was observed in Kerr images as irregular spatial characteristics of the magnetisation dynamics. Such dynamics were observed far from the nano-contact and so their presence cannot be detected in electrical measurements. This work demonstrates that TRSKM is a powerful tool for the direct observation of the magnetisation dynamics generated by STVOs that exhibit complicated microwave emission. Characterisation of such dynamics outside the nano-contact perimeter permits a deeper insight into the requirements for optimal phase-locking of multiple STVOs that share common magnetic layers.

    • Nano-contact (NC) spin-torque vortex oscillators (STVOs) that share constituent ferromagnetic layers are anticipated to overcome the technological bottlenecks of low microwave power and phase instability exhibited by individual STVOs.1 Mutual synchronisation of multiple NC-STVOs can be achieved by dynamic coupling within the common magnetic layers.1,2 Alternatively, injection of a small microwave (RF) current can lock the phase of multiple STVOs.3 Direct observation of the coupled magnetization dynamics is challenging and has so far been inferred from micromagnetic simulations.4 In this work a combination of RF electrical characterization and time-resolved scanning Kerr microscopy (TRSKM) has been used to image the magnetization dynamics excited in the continuous film NiFe free layer of a pair of NC-STVOs.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nanocontact spin-torque oscillators are devices in which the generation of propagating spin waves can be sustained by spin transfer torque. In the present paper, we perform combined electrical and optical measurements in a single experimental setup to systematically investigate the excitation of spin waves by a nanocontact spin-torque oscillator and their propagation in a Ni80Fe20 extended layer. By using microfocused Brillouin light scattering we observe an anisotropic emission of spin waves, due to the broken symmetry imposed by the inhomogeneous Oersted field generated by the injected current. In particular, spin waves propagate on the side of the nanocontact where the Oersted field and the in-plane component of the applied magnetic field are antiparallel, while propagation is inhibited on the opposite side. Moreover, propagating spin waves are efficiently excited only in a limited frequency range corresponding to wavevectors inversely proportional to the size of the nanocontact. This frequency range obeys the dispersion relation for exchange-dominated spin waves in the far field, as confirmed by micromagnetic simulations of similar devices. The present results have direct consequences for spin wave based applications, such as synchronization, computation, and magnonics.

    • We study the auto-oscillating magnetodynamics in orthogonal spin-torque nano-oscillators (STNOs) as a function of the out-of-plane (OOP) magnetic-field angle. In perpendicular fields and at OOP field angles down to approximately 50°, we observe the nucleation of a droplet. However, for field angles below 50°, experiments indicate that the droplet gives way to propagating spin waves, in agreement with our micromagnetic simulations. Theoretical calculations show that the physical mechanism behind these observations is the sign changing of spin-wave nonlinearity (SWN) by angle. In addition, we show that the presence of a strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy free layer in the system reverses the angular dependence of the SWN and dynamics in STNOs with respect to the known behavior determined for the in-plane magnetic anisotropy free layer. Our results are of fundamental interest in understanding the rich dynamics of nanoscale solitons and spin-wave dynamics in STNOs.

The orthogonal NC-STOs exhibit a dramatic transition from the conventional ferromagnetic resonance-like spin wave mode to a magnetic droplet soliton mode. In particular, the field and current dependence of the droplet soliton near threshold are discussed. Near threshold the droplet soliton undergoes complex dynamics that include mode hopping, as evident in the experimental frequency domain and magnetoresistance response. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

    • The effect of ferromagnetic layer thickness on the temperature-dependent stray-field-induced coupling mechanism is investigated in perpendicular pseudo-spin-valves based on [Ni/Co](5)/ Cu/Co-[Ni/Co](n) (n = 2, 3, 4, and 5). Experimental observations show that as n increases from 2 to 4, the difference in coercivity and anisotropy between the two ([Ni/Co](5) or bottom-layer, and [Ni/Co](n) or top-layer) layers increases and the room temperature coupling strength decreases. The coupling then increases for n = 5, as the coercivity difference shrinks and anisotropy decreases. At reduced temperature, the layers start to decouple at a temperature, which increases with n from 2 to 4 and decreases for n = 5 via a stray-field domain-replication mechanism. Our results are useful to control the coupling in pseudo-spin-valves for practical applications in magnetoresistive devices.

    • Dissipative solitons have been reported in a wide range of nonlinear systems, but the observation of their magnetic analog has been experimentally challenging. Using spin transfer torque underneath a nanocontact on a magnetic thin film with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), we have observed the generation of dissipative magnetic droplet solitons and report on their rich dynamical properties. Micromagnetic simulations identify a wide range of automodulation frequencies, including droplet oscillatory motion, droplet "spinning," and droplet "breather" states. The droplet can be controlled by using both current and magnetic fields and is expected to have applications in spintronics, magnonics, and PMA-based domain-wall devices.

The sputter deposited material stack was based on a ferromagnetic (FM) NiFe sensing layer surrounded by two layers of anti-FM IrMn. This material stack enables implementation of a thick NiFe layer without loss of sensitivity. We present an improvement in detectivity in the PHEB by changing the shape and the materials of the corners between the sensors in a meander shape. A significant reduction of noise also comes from the thick NiFe layer, due to the reduced resistance of the sensor.

  • Fabrication and Characterization of Nanocontact Spin-Torque Oscillators
  • 2013
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The manufacturing of nanocontact-based spin-torque oscillators (NC-STOs)has opened the door for spintronic devices to play a part as active microwaveelements. The NC-STO has the capability of converting a direct current intoa microwave signal, and vice versa, by utilizing the spin transfer torque (STT)in ferromagnetic multilayer systems. However, the high-frequency operation ofNC-STOs typically requires high magnetic fields and the microwave power theygenerate is rather limited. As a result, NC-STOs are not yet commercially used, and they require improvements in both material systems and device geometriesbefore they can find actual use in microwave applications. In order to improve and advance this technology, NC-STOs are requiredwith both different nanocontact (NC) sizes and geometries, and using differ- ent stacks of magnetic materials. This dissertation presents experimental in- vestigations into the manufacturing of such devices using different fabrication techniques and a number of different magnetic material stacks. Currently, the fabrication of NC-STOs is limited to advanced laboratories, because NC fabri- cation requires high-resolution lithography tools. In the present work, we have developed an alternative method of fabrication, which does not require such tools and has the capability of fabricating NC-STOs having one to hundreds of NCs in a variety of sizes, possibly  down to 20 nm. Devices fabricated with this method have shown mutual synchronization of three parallel-connected NCs, and pairwise synchronization in devices with four and five NCs.Furthermore, the present work demonstrates low-field operation (down to0.02 Tesla) of NC-STOs at a record high frequency of 12 GHz. This wasachieved by implementing multilayers with a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy(PMA) material in the free layer of the NC-STO. In addition, the fabricateddevices revealed an unexpected dynamic regime under large external appliedfield (above 0.4 Tesla). The new dynamic regime was found to be due to anentirely novel nanomagnetic dynamic object â a so-called magnetic droplet soliton, predicted theoretically in 1977 but not experimentally observed until now.Detailed experiments and micromagnetic simulations show that the droplet hasvery rich dynamics. Finally,  spin-torque-induced  transverse spin wave instabilities have beenstudied.  A NC-STO with  a material stack consisting of a single ferromag- netic metal sandwiched between two non-ferromagnetic metals was fabricated. Prior to this work, evidence of spin wave instabilities was reported as resis- tance switching in nanopillar- and mechanical point contact based STOs. In the present  work, the fabricated NC-STOs showed actual microwave  signals up to 3 GHz under zero applied field with strong current hysteresis. All  the fabricated NC-STOs open up new means of studying STT in different environ- ments, in order to resolve their current drawbacks for industrial applications.

    • We demonstrate spin transfer torque (STT) driven microwave signal generation, from about 250 MHz to above 3 GHz, in single perm alloy layers underneath a nano-contact with diameter of 100 nm. The threshold current for signal generation is found to be strongly hysteretic, the microwave signal shows a number of harmonics, zero-field operation is straightforward, and the microwave frequency increases quasi-linearly with drive current. All observations are consistent with STT driven motion of a vortex-antivortex pair nucleated by the Oersted field underneath the nano-contact. While the generated power is about 10 dB smaller than the best GMR based nano-contact spin torque oscillators, the linewidth of 6-100 MHz is of the same order.

  • Mutually synchronized bottom-up multi-nanocontact spin-torque oscillators

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spin-torque oscillators offer a unique combination of nanosize, ultrafast modulation rates and ultrawide band signal generation from 100 MHz to close to 100 GHz. However, their low output power and large phase noise still limit their applicability to fundamental studies of spin-transfer torque and magnetodynamic phenomena. A possible solution to both problems is the spin-wave-mediated mutual synchronization of multiple spin-torque oscillators through a shared excited ferromagnetic layer. To date, synchronization of high-frequency spin-torque oscillators has only been achieved for two nanocontacts. As fabrication using expensive top-down lithography processes is not readily available to many groups, attempts to synchronize a large number of nanocontacts have been all but abandoned. Here we present an alternative, simple and cost-effective bottom-up method to realize large ensembles of synchronized nanocontact spin-torque oscillators. We demonstrate mutual synchronization of three high-frequency nanocontact spin-torque oscillators and pairwise synchronization in devices with four and five nanocontacts.

  • Nanostructured MnGa films on Si/SiO(2) with 20.5 kOe room temperature coercivity
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 110:9, s. 093902-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nanostructured Mn(67)Ga(33) films exhibiting high room temperature coercivity (H(C) = 20.5 kOe) have been prepared by sputtering onto thermally oxidized Si substrates. Both the morphology and the coercivity of the films can be tuned by varying the growth parameters. The low deposition rate film, sputtered at a reduced power and working pressure, demonstrates a discontinuous island-like growth and the highest H(C). The large H(C) is linked to the presence of the high anisotropy DO(22) Mn(3)Ga phase and the single domain character of the exchange isolated, dipolar interacting, single crystal islands.
