- From November 1652 until June 1654, an ensemble of Italian singers and musicians resided at the court of Queen Christina of Sweden, first in Stockholm and thereafter in Uppsala. They performed both secular music at her chambers and sacred music in the church, and also staged theatrical plays at the royal castle. This article presents new information about the recruitment process and the incentives behind it, and a reconstruction of the repertoire of the ensemble and the performance contexts for that repertoire. The ensemble was not an opera troupe, as has repeteadly been asserted in the literature. Instead they were arguably primarily recruited to perform sacred music in a Catholic tradition. The headquarters of the Jesuit Society in Rome was even directly involved in the recruitment of the singers. Thus, the recruitment process went hand in hand with Christina’s plans to abdicate, convert to Catholicism and move to Rome, and must be interpreted as part of that process.

- This dissertation is concerned with musical transfer in seventeenth-century northern Europe, and in particular the repertory and the musical practice of the musicians of the Swedish royal court during the period of the tenure of Gustav Düben as court chapel master (1663–1690). The starting point of and the precondition for the study is provided by the extensive musical collection, the Düben Collection, held by Uppsala University library: the remnants of the music library of the Düben family of whom four were Swedish court chapel masters. The collection has not previously been considered systematically in its entirety and the present study has answered many questions in areas such as establishing the function of the music as the repertory of the court musicians, the connection with the German Church in Stockholm and the identification of many of the anonymous sources and of concordances outside the collection. The extant music has been identified as belonging to specific areas of repertory, for example music for weddings, funerals and secular courtly divertissements. The study considers the different aspects of response to cultural transfer, above all the processes of the adaption of the music to the local context, and two forms of adaptation are specifically considered, the alteration of the texts and the modification of the scoring. Finally, the extant music composed by Gustav Düben has been narrowed down and is discussed with a special focus on borrowing and the practice of imitatio.

- The chapter deals with the dissemination routes and transfer of mid-16th-century Lutheran music prints in northern Europe, focussing on Johann Reusch’s Zehen deudscher Psalm Davids sampt einem schönen Gebet aus dem Propheten Hieremia in vier Stimmen gebracht, published in Wittenberg in 1551. The collection has a significant role in early modern Lutheran music culture as the first single-author collection of German psalm motets (polyphonic settings of biblical psalm texts in German) and it served as a model for subsequent collections in the same genre. Reusch had important networks in Reformation circles, shown not at least by his connections with the printer Georg Rhau and Philipp Melanchthon, who wrote the preface to Reusch’s collection. Only three part books have survived from Reusch’s edition: a cantus part book in Uppsala University Library, and a tenor and a bassus part book in the Music and Theatre Library in Stockholm. While the two Stockholm part books originate in the German congregation and its Latin school in Stockholm, the Uppsala part book stems from a more unexpected context: one of the libraries in Mainz that were taken and shipped to Sweden by the Swedish army in 1632. Although the scope of the Mainz music collection in Uppsala has not yet been fully established, a preliminary number of volumes exceed 80 and include more than 200 printed titles. The Mainz collection contains also other editions of protestant music, some printed in Wittenberg. In addition to the surviving part books, now lost copies are also taken into account, in order to understand the circulation and the use of the marked Lutheran genre of German psalm motets.
