  • Senior orienteering athletes as a model of healthy aging : a mixed-method approach
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: BMC Geriatrics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1471-2318. ; 15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The proportion of individuals reaching an old age is increasing and will, in the near future consume a majority of health care resources. It is therefore essential to facilitate the maintenance of optimal functionality among older adults. By characterizing older individuals experiencing wellbeing, factors important to promote and maintain health through life can be identified. Orienteering is an endurance-running sport involving cross-country navigation, demanding both cognitive and physical skills of its practitioners. In this study we aim to explore a Swedish population of senior orienteering athletes as a potential model of healthy aging. Methods: We undertook a mixed-method approach using quantitative (i.e. questionnaires) and qualitative (i.e. focus group discussions) methodologies to explore a population of senior orienteering athletes (n = 136, median age = 69 (67-71) years). Quantitative data was collected to evaluate health status, assessing physical activity (Frandin-Grimby activity scale (FGAS)), functional wellbeing (EQ-5D-5 L), gut health (Gastrointestinal symptoms rating scale (GSRS)), anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale (HADS)) and overall health (Health index (HI)). The data was further compared to reference values obtained from a free-living Swedish population of older adults. Focus group discussions (FGD) were performed as a complement to the quantitative data to facilitate the individuals' own views on health and physical activity. Results: The orienteering athletes enrolled in the study reported a significantly better health compared to the free-living older adults (p < 0.0015) on all questionnaires except HADS. The high health status displayed in this population was further confirmed by the FGD findings, in which all participants declared their engagement in orienteering as a prerequisite for health. Conclusions: In conclusion our results show that senior orienteering may represent an ideal model in studies of healthy aging. Furthermore, our results show that even though the senior orienteering athletes are well aware of the long-term benefits of physical activity and have practiced the sport from a young age, they particularly point out that their engagement in orienteering is driven by short-term values such as enjoyment and passion. This may be important to consider when introducing public health interventions among the general older population.

  • A review of research on the relationship between learning and health for older adults
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Lifelong Education. - : Routledge. - 0260-1370 .- 1464-519X. ; 39:5-6, s. 528-544
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous studies have demonstrated that there is a positive relationship between learning activities and health in general and that learning has a positive impact on the psychological, mental and social aspects of health. Despite this, there are still unanswered questions about the relationship between and the concepts of health and learning. The aim of this review has been to map and synthesise research on the relationship between learning and health for older adults in organised or institutionalised education using a conceptual analysis model. The results demonstrate that intrinsic values like learning for its own sake and the joy of learning are emphasised. Moreover, individual factors of health are emphasised and several different concepts are used to explain health. In the final synthesis, four logics are identified concerning the relationship between learning and health: Learning as Quality of Life, Learning as Social Networks, Learning as a Means for Coping and Learning as a Means for Reducing Risk. In conclusion, there is a need for a more in-depth understanding of the ontological and epistemological grounds for learning and health in the field in order to strengthen the cumulative knowledge production about the relationship between older adults learning and health.

  • Experiences of intrinsic values in education for older adults : insights from a Swedish senior university
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: European Journal for Research on the Education and Learning of Adults. - : Linköping University Electronic Press. - 2000-7426. ; 13:1, s. 39-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aims to acquire more knowledge about the meaning of intrinsic values in organisedpost-work non-formal educational activities for older adults. Observations andfocus group interviews were conducted at a senior university in Sweden. John Dewey’sconcept of experience and theory of value are used to facilitate a deeper understandingof the intrinsic values that were identified. The results of the study demonstrate whatintrinsic values in education for older adults can be, as well as how they are experienced.Several intrinsic values were identified: (i) new insights and widened perspectives, (ii)the reflective process, (iii) enrichment, (iv) meaningfulness, (v) enjoyment, (vi)peacefulness, (vii) existential awareness, (viii) relational support and (ix) sense ofcommunity. The results further reveal how the values of education are experienced in theinteractions and relations between older individuals and the social environment in theongoing education and that the activities themselves are valued by the participants.

  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis focuses on older adults’ participation in non-formal education where learning does not lead to qualifications for a vocational career. In recent decades learning has been discussed in relation to older adults, where concepts like lifelong learning have been put forward as instruments for facing challenges such as demographic changes and ageing. Research demonstrates that intrinsic aspects of learning, such as the joy of learning, are important for older adults’ participation in education. However, research seldom considers intrinsic values of education as a point of departure. Against this background, the aim of the thesis is to develop a deeper understanding of older adults’ experiences of intrinsic values in organised educational activities and their significance for older adults’ health. The thesis consists of three articles. One article is a review focusing on how the research field has explained the relation between learning and health for older adults. The other two articles focus specifically on the educational practice. One of the articles explores older adults’ experiences of intrinsic values, while the other looks at the teachers’ didactical principles for organising education for older adults. To fulfil the purpose of the thesis and facilitate an in-depth understanding, a synthesis is created based on the three articles, didactic theory, John Dewey’s theory of values and his conceptualisation of experience and Aron Antonovsky’s salutogenic perspective on health. By synthesising the results from the articles and the theories new theoretical explanations emerge as to how older adults’ learning can contribute to their health. With support from the concepts intrinsic values, interaction, continuity, health resources and sense of coherence, the synthesis emphasises that older adults’ experiences of intrinsic values in education can be understood as health resources that contribute to their sense of coherence.

  • Teachers' reflections on their practices in older adult non-formal education
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research. - : Routledge. - 0031-3831 .- 1470-1170. ; 68:5, s. 996-1010
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aims to contribute knowledge about teachers’ reflections on their own practice in Folkbildning activities for older adults and is based on Nordic-German Didaktik theory and the three main Didaktik questions: why?, what? and how?. Semi-structured, qualitative interviews were conducted with teachers from different adult education associations. The study identified that the following purposes reflected by the teachers are connected with the why question: enjoyment, critical inquiry and resocialisation. Three principles of the what question are participants’ interests, standards and plurality. Four principles relating to the how question are students’ active participation, teachers’ distinct guidance, individualisation and a permissive environment. The results further indicate that teachers expressed two approaches about their own teaching practice. The first approach emphasises the elements of Bildung, which involves critical thinking and questioning certain notions about the world, while the second focuses on socialisation and basic knowledge that is needed in society.
